I had been out of the aquarium hobby for like 25 yrs, so when I got back in I went for a natural setup and purchased a Bag of Bugs to jump start it! Love what he's doing over there, and love his vids too!
Yes Tony is doing great things! Low prices and effective shipping. I'll be ordering again soon just to show some extra support. And welcome back to the hobby!
in my experience, scuds will eat hornwort faster than it grows. I have to put some in a tank with fish large enough to eat scuds to keep a supply of it growing, then add it to my scud tanks a bit at a time.
@@BucketPonds I love scuds ! best clean up crew there is. I'm curious, you said there's alligators where you live, I live in east Texas, there's plenty here, what state are you in?
Tony has some really cool stuff. I love the bag of bugs and the leafy bugs. And yes, hornwort goes into every tank. Best plant for fast growth. Great video!
A neat trick I learned from another youtuber who sells a special "never clog" airstone, is basically a very clever well built design of basically "felt" the air goes though. A DIY with felt with some way to keep it attached to an air-hose and force the air to go through it, makes a great airstone replacement for cheap and easy to replace. I got several sheets of felt on sale for around $0.10, but even it it cost you $1, you can make a lot of DIY airstones from 1 sheet. This is much cheaper than a $0.50-$2.00 airstone that clogs. Although you can beach/chlorine the airstone to unclog it, I like using felt now, because to clean it, I can just squeeze it under water a few times, just like how you clean a sponge. I do not recommend using a cellulose sponge as an airstone, because they break down fast. All packs of sponges I see at stores, say "do not use in aquarium". I've used "magic eraser" before, but due to the abrasiveness and the potential health risk (from stuff like very high temps), I recommend against it and I will never use them again.
Hey Fusion! That's a clever idea 💡 and yes felt is very inexpensive. Fits well with our general theme of do more and spend less. I don't show it on the channel much. It's a bit messy and extremely overstocked. But for the last few years I've been running a ten gallon guppy tank with just an air line. The sponge filter cracked (AliExpress stuff) and the air stone before that began to disintegrate. I said screw it and went with a bare end of the air tubing. Surprisingly it worked out great. Less resistance on the air pump and the guppies continue to thrive. They have been breeding in that tank like that for so long... I like to think they are adapting to the setup. Who knows? In a few years we may have a special endler/guppy strain that can do well in our weird jars and what not. Great comment! Going to dig up some felt
I'm a brand new subscriber I got the bag of bugs for my 7 gallon jungle Cube and I have a beta it's so cold to Sam Hunt everyday and I'm looking to get another bag of bugs and put it in a gallon jar just to have on its own. It's that everything hides in my tank with the fish and I want to give everything a chance to multiply 😊
My Bag of Bugs arrived two days ago and I installed it in a battery jar. I’m glad to see you using the filter since I’d put an airstone in mine and wasn’t sure if I was hurting things with the agitation from the bubbles. I was told that the leaves and detritus are the food and I didn’t need to add any? Interested to see where this tiny tank goes!
Hey that's great! Yes they'll forage and possibly eat some of the plants as well. The air pump was an after thought but has definitely helped. The agitation may disturb some species but I haven't noticed any issues. More oxygen should translate to more life/more activity. The extra food is mostly to encourage breeding behavior. May or may not be needed. tend to over feed the jars in order to encourage large numbers of our microfauna.
I hope you have good luck with your Bag O' Bugs. I bought one early on when they started selling them. The scud species that came with mine were omnivorous and ruined everything. They definitely ate all of my live plants quicker than they could grow.

I love Tony and his biz. He and his wife actually came to my fish room last year!

Hey woodsman! Thank you I'll keep that in mind. Pretty impressive if they can outpace the growth rate!

Scuds mow thru my hornwort too

Fabulous setup! I treasure my jar aquarium with critters from Phillips, and wear the pendant often! ❤😊
Hornwort is my favorite. I've been growing some wild collected and some store bought, and yeah it grows incredibly fast

Can you try to do one with tubifex worms . Great jar .
Hey Rahul sure thing! Check out the Aquatic Worm Paradise: ruclips.net/video/e0KwHNWg8us/видео.htmlsi=kx6XJY-vfcVAb6JF

im astonished, this is my first exposure to this channel but are these actually freshwater pico tanks that are not horridly stocked?
What kind of lighting do you use for these small aquaria?
Hey Seth good question! For lighting I'm using Great Value 2ft full spectrum LED grow lights. About $20 from Walmart.
@BucketPonds what the benefits of the seedpods?
? Tannins? Like Alder cones for Shrimp 🤷🏼♀️✌️
