"As someone who's not a fan of Rock & Roll" You don't get it, Dad, and you never will! Rock and Roll is here to stay, your era of Big Band is over!
No!! Rock & Roll is DEAD, eat your meatloaf & go to your room!!!
Damn, you do such a great job of deep diving into single issues, Carl. The mark of someone with passion for their hobby!
Thanks Rubén! Perfect combination of nostalgia & new!
Go Joe and Go Carl!
Thanks Lance!!
This Joe team is way behind on Energon weapons tech compared to Transformers and Cobra.
For sure…in the dark, understaffed, under equipped…having their eyes opened and them getting their act together is going to be quite satisfying to watch!
As much as I think Bellaire's colors really elevate this title, the artwork looks so good in black and white! I'm also really digging this iteration of Duke and Baroness. I mean, Baroness has always been an interesting character, but Duke specifically is really shining with this new take in a way that he hadn't before, at least for me. I missed the Risk = Snake Eyes theory...I agree with you. I think Risk is a totally new character separate from Snakes, but I like your thought process here about Risk potentially bringing him in... Great work as always! I'm really digging these deep dive reviews.
Appreciate it man! I agree the colors definitely add the mood to each page, but the emotion & action is all here! Tom’s more open style of art sure does leave a lot of room for a colorist to have some fun! This book, when it comes down to it, so far has been ALL about the relationships. You can say it about almost any two characters that interact with each other that it’s an interesting interaction. Love the approach they are taking here!
another fun video buddy, thanks
Thanks bud!! See you next week!!
Personally, barring a personal tragedy in the life of someone on the creative staff, there is never a GOOD reason for the artist to already need to be filled in for on only the 4th issue of any book, much less a book with as much promotion as Absolute Batman has been given and as much hype as it has received. That being said, I think this is pretty nice cover. The interior art is an interesting choice, as is the choice to draw the storytelling and backgrounds very pro level, yet he chose to draw all the figures like many 13 to 15 year old kids would draw them in the flashback scenes Bruce is recounting/narrating, which I'm assuming is related to the story. It's intriguing and I look forward to more closely looking at it when it get around to reading it. I've read Batman: Dark Patterns and I have to say I really love The Wound Man's character design and the premise behind it is pretty cool, too. Also, credit where it is due: While Sherman's quasi, Kaluta-esque art style on Absolute Wonder Woman was nothing special, the art so far in this series is several notches above that. The panel design and arrangements are incredibly unique and inventive. In some of the splashy cityscapes, I felt like I was the cameraman, up high floating next to the skyscrapers. The perspectives he used were so well done and realistic, it felt like I was in the scene. It's a really fun murder mystery with an intriguing new villain in The Wound Man, with really outstanding art. I definitely recommend this title to any Batman fan. The combination of story and art absolutely blows away that of Absolute Wonder Woman. Given how much the original pages of that series cost, by all rights these pages should sell for multiples of those, if the quality of story and art were the only thing that mattered. Alas, things aren't always that simple, are they? With all the industry push and hype being placed on the Absolute titles and this one barely getting any attention I've seen, it remains to be seen how much the art from this title will be priced at in comparison to AWW. The opportunity to promote the art from the much better of the two titles is right there for the taking, but we'll see if Felix decides to favour the more heavily hyped but weaker title as the one with the pricier art, or if he'll recognize Sherman's work in Dark Patterns is far superior (as is the story) and price these pages accordingly. I look forward to seeing what happens! Thanks for another great video review, Carl!
I love Gabriel Hernandez Walta's art. Sentient (written by Jeff Lemire, published by TKO) and The Vision (written by Tom King, published by Marvel) were excellent stories he did, and his issue #5 of Haha he did with W. Maxwell Prince was my favorite issue that came out that year. Cool that he's getting a chance to do Batman, bummer it's a fill-in issue this early in the run
@@bunkmastab Thank you!! Vision is what I know his name from! I’ve not read that one (but know I should) but have seen pages of the art & really dug it. I agree, it was a tough issue to chat about because I really do like the art style, but having it place in this opening arc is just a let down. Granted it’s (mostly) all flashback but we’ve seen flashbacks in each of the first three issues too, so it’s not like it is a clear division & stands alone as “the flashback issue.” I’d love to see more of his own take on Batman & I’d likely very much enjoy it!
I really enjoyed the Combiner war taking a backseat almost, as it really brings scale into the picture. It shows how small Optimus and the others are in this battle. Also, ugh that TMIFU variant cover is fantastic! Wish I was collecting the singles, but I'll have to wait for the TPB and hopefully one day a Hardcover!!!
It’s so funny because I thought they were going to throw us a curve and do something uncharacteristic by giving us an entire issue of almost singularly focused action on the combiner fight with tidbits of other threads being advanced and nope! I agree I very much approve of the work they delivered instead. The thing that most surprised me was how much time was dedicated to Elita & Cliffjumper. Very intriguing storyline developing there! Pretty masterful all around with this issue!
Let Them Fight...
Absolutely! “CHOO CHOO” is the new sound to signal the start of a new round of fighting!
Sarah Stern has been doing an amazing job with these colors, these images really pop off the page thanks to her contributions!
They really do. It’s almost like taking Spicer’s pallet and adding a layer of rich warmth to really make these images stand out. She really suits Jorge well!!
Dammit! Even with the way my memory works, there's no way that I'm going to forget this cliffhanger! Ah, serves me right I guess. Anyway, the Corona art is as strong as ever and there are some really nice images in this issue. Love your enthusiasm for the book, as always! Oh, and listening to videos on 2x speed is a thing? It actually blows. I'd rather watch on regular speed, even IF watching this video took twice as long as it'll take me to read the issue!
Sorry Rubén, yeah…that was a quite the memorable last page!! As for the 2x speed thing, milage may vary, it works for some videos I watch and sometimes it’s too fast. All depends on the natural speaking pace of each video. I just press record and start talking & then when I’m done, I’m often surprised how long it was. It’s probably better if I were to keep it shorter but hey, it is what it is right? This series really has been so fun to study more in depth than almost anything I’ve read in recent memory. Last time I was reading a series & I would feel compelled to read each new issue multiple times was the Snyder/Capullo Batman run. It’s just not something I’d have expected from Transformers!
@@CarlsCollection Oh, I would suggest to NOT worry about the length. I'll never forget how, for the longest time, I would apologize every single week on every episode I did, for letting the stream go as long as it did. Until I eventually realized I wasn't losing any live viewers. In fact, just the opposite. Regardless of how long the episodes went, aside from the people on the east coast who have to get up really early on Mondays, they all stuck around. That's when I learned to stop caring about the algorithm and all the supposedly negative aspects that would happen to my videos if I did long form content. Just keep doing what you're doing. As long as you have something to say, keep recording! The people who enjoy the content will make the time regardless of the length. 👍
Ultimately, I truly don’t care. As long as I don’t feel like I am just rambling, (and I have edited out some of those sections before) the length is the length! Algorithms be damned! I just find this series so easy to talk about!
@@CarlsCollection That's the right attitude to have, proven out by the already 407 views this video has as of this writing!
Peak issue and peak review 🔥
Thanks man!! What an issue! CHOO CHOO!!!
I picked up Geiger on sale over the holidays, so I'm slowly getting into the Ghost Machine stuff...gonna get to Redcoat someday, I swear! Every time I see it pop up it's like, "oh yeah, I really need to get that book." Definitely think VR is a more satisfying read in tpb form, but that being said, I'm still really enjoying it month to month. It's really starting to cook now! Great work as always, man!
@@Moonbase3 I’ve yet to dive into Geiger and it’s funny because I almost grabbed that trade on the cheap too phew the holidays but had already picked up a few too many “me presents” so I passed…for now. Let me know what you think of it once you give it a read! The past few months of VR have indeed been pretty “brisk” (at least when compared to previous issues. I still don’t fully understand what is going on or where it’s heading but that is very much part of its appeal!
I firmly believe that I might be one of the only people who is still on the fence with VR. I love the concepts and the designs, but the story itself has really yet to capture me. It still feels like a comic mainly just used to introduce new TF characters to the universe. I hope the series improves, but at the moment I'm not super excited for each issue. Lot's of great ideas in the series, but the story hasn't reached it's heights yet in my opinion
It’s a great companion, but by design it’s not reached its heights yet. Unlike Transformers where each of the individual storylines move at a pretty fast pace, the storylines here get a little movement each issue making it for one heck of a slow burn. There are times where things progress at a faster pace but this one is a for sure marathon not a sprint. That’s honestly why I recommend reading it as the collected editions come out. It’s certainly not required reading now, but long term I do feel like this whole space opera will be essential.
Delta's such a hater smh
With Dynamite having so many variants on each issue, Manix fans that have a pull list should ask for the Manix covers. When that happens, store owners are likely to order more than one and put it on the stands to introduce others to Manix. Best Absolute Superman issue by far. But if only the elite are escaping Krypton, who's going to cook and clean? Who's going to defend them? No Absolute Wonder Woman 3?
It’ll be ships filled with Mr & Mrs Howell’s & no Skippers or Gilligans.
Oh and I think I’m going to read Absolute WW in trade or on the DC app.
Another bang up job, Carl. I still haven't tried Absolute Superman and I gotta say, the more you and others online continue to say how much more interesting the Krypton setting of the story is the most interesting one, the more turned off from wanting to read it I become! 😂 But having said that, I did like some of the art you showed, so we'll see! Nice video to start off the new year!
The Krypton story is worth reading. We're more than halfway through this first arc and it turns out to be the meat of the story.
@@marcuswai That's what scares me though. I love the Superman mythology, EXCEPT for the Krypton stuff. So when an alternate universe Superman begins and the readers are all saying that the Krypton stuff is the most interesting, I can't help but cringe. I WILL give it a try at some point though.
I’ve yet to really read a Krypton based story that intrigues me until this came along, so I’m with you there Rubén. That said, if they continue down this path and the Krypton elements survive the destruction of the planet somehow…that alone will likely keep me hooked. That might then make the Superman parts of the story even more interesting. We’ll see, time will certainly tell. I’ll also happily tell you to not waste your time if it comes to that! You’ll see it on my face!
@@CarlsCollection Hah! I certainly appreciate your willingness to look out for me and not have me waste my time needlessly, Carl! I WILL give it a chance, mainly because you and Marcus keep saying you actually enjoy all the Krypton stuff! I just don't know if I'll try it soon or just wait for the arc to be completed first so I can read it all in one sitting.
Awesome recap as always, loved that Mannix-ized Thundercats Variant! My Autumn Kingdom 4 is waiting at my shop for me but I can't wait to check that out!
I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts once you do!! It’s been a very fun discovery (thanks to you)!
Solid picks on both unpublished and published (as well as the honorable mentions), congrats on a great 2024 year of OA collecting Carl! I think the Frankenstein commission is my personal favorite but lots of great images there. Also like the section about what you sold and why, that might do well as a standalone video (whether you just cut it out of this and re-upload or you do an expanded video version of it), we don't see as much content around what we let go of as much as what we are getting out there. thanks for the vids! - Kavi
That’s a great idea Kavi! Maybe I’ll just do a separate video dedicated to that topic. I agree, not enough people talk about the maneuvering that happens when our goals and tastes change! Appreciate the kind words my friend!
Great show, Carl. Nice open too. Pleased you are reading Absolute Superman so I don’t have to. For decades, the buzz from the relaunch and reinvent thesis has proven to be short-lived, failing to capture and sustain new readers, while alienating the dwindling number of lifers. Hoping Absolute is an exception for my beloved DC, but I remain skeptical.
Thanks Tom. I’m for the most part, rebooted out but there was an appeal this time because of it being so different. I’d much rather see a completely new take on the character than something that resembles a soft reboot. I’ve seen enough of those to know I’m not interested.
nice one!
Thanks Lance!! Hope you’re having a great weekend!
This might be my favorite Jurgens commission of Superman that I've ever seen. This could've been a cover if absolute era wasn't going on
I agree, it very much should’ve been! It was a standout amongst the unused cover layouts that Dan submitted to DC for approval. I’m thrilled I was able to have Dan & Brett properly bring this one to life!
I wanted to find someone who could explain why pre triangle comics were in this at the beginning and you summed it up really well. I appreciate you!
Glad you enjoyed that explanation! Thank you so much for watching!
Nice job Carl. I really liked the Dan Jurgens interview and your appreciation of Romona and finding that original concept of yours.
Thanks Lee! It was such a treat to be able to sit down and chat with Dan! It was also certainly bittersweet having that piece from Ramona found in her studio, but ultimately it was a very fitting “last commission” to get from her!
Great video as always!
Thanks Nick! Been having so much fun engaging with my fellow collectors through these videos! All about the people we meet along the way!
Congrats on producing this wonderful video, Carl, it was a great idea and a lot of fun to watch. All the best for good health and continued growth of your channel in 2025!
Thanks Rubén! Always appreciate the kind words, spirited discussions and constant support! Let’s do more of that next year!
@@CarlsCollection Of course, Carl, my pleasure. Looking forward to more in 2025 for sure!
Great pickups this year! Happy hunting in 2025!
Much appreciated Rick! Thanks for all the support!
Congrats on a great year in art!
Thanks man! Appreciate you being part of it!
Well Done, Dan Jurgens is the man.
I definitely feel quite fortunate to have been able to get that recorded!
@@CarlsCollection Be proud of your efforts, it is hard not to turn into a fanboy. Met Dan twice all I did was praised him. He had pile of pages he was selling I picked up a Day of doom page that had BILL SIENKIEWICZ inks, for cheap under $50.00 cheap. I enjoy your channel keep up the great work
Great year in review! A lot of multi platform properties with toys, movies, comics, etc. for what you collect.
Thanks Marcus! Feels pretty great to have settled into a bit of a groove while also leaving the door open for new discoveries!
Great pick ups. It is like picking your favorite child, it's hard.
Exactly! Love them all for various reasons!
Great video, Carl. And a job well done on the interview! -Tom
Thanks Tom! Kudos on the bringing the mics & the videographer skills!
one of your best videos! Love seeing all the art!! Love your John Amor artworks
Thanks Lance! Looking forward to adding to my John Amor collection at OAX! Picking another one up from Jiggy!
So much Energon!
It fueled my 2024 & I crave MORE!!!
Duke really is an 80's action hero...probably the best way to describe him! And I also had to pick up that Jason Howard Bumblebee variant cover...it's so brutal (maybe even more brutal than the actual moment itself in issue 1) and I love it so much!
It just feels like a winning combination, 80’s action hero, retro animation vibe in the clean line stylings of Tom Reilly. Just makes for a darn fun action book!
Agree on Absolute Batman - I picked up #1 - a lot of solid backgrounds and not much detail. Don't get it. Publishers should put credibility and fan experience over the need to generate cash. For high-profile series or limited series, they should wait to publish (maybe even announce) until a certain number of issues are complete (similar to what Netflix and HBO does with series seasons). These are usually very expensive or groundbreaking series; why risk fan disappointment? Regardless of whether it is artist delays (Camelot 3000, Kingdom Come) or the writer's delays (Astonishing X-Men, Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk),
This is a pretty big swing too with the launch of the Absolute titles. With most things DC, Batman is the flagship title. Getting this right should be top goal. We’ll see if this was a planned one off fill in or if this becomes a trend. Time will tell.
Dude, my mind is blown over the fact that Absolute Batman was in the planning stages for TWO FULL YEARS before the first issue came out, the book is launching from scratch, not already an ongoing series, DC is known for planning their schedule much further out in advance than Marvel does (do a LOT more time for the artists to get ahead of schedule), yet Dragotta ALREADY fell behind after only 3 issues and is being replaced on issue #4 by a fill-in artist??!?! I already wasn't super enthused about continuing it after the first issue, and as someone who has always been into comics for the art more than the story, this news is only lessening my desire to keep reading the title. And I haven't even touched on the whole absurdity (not the first word that came to mind, but I'm trying to be nice) of using a giant mining truck as the Batmobile! SO much I can say about that! Ugh....
Now to be fair I’m not sure how much of that time was devoted to Batman himself or just the crafting of the whole Absolute universe and mapping that out because Snyder is pretty much the architect of that. Still though, it’s a bit disappointing. Also, in some interviews I’ve watched since recording the video it may be that this issue 4 isn’t part of the initial 5 part “The Zoo” story or just an interlude issue. So it’s possible that in trade they will collect issues 1-6 and have this issue 4 placed at the end after the 1-5 “The Zoo” story. So basically, I don’t want to over react with annoyance until I fully see how this plays out. I do hope they are thinking about how it will be presented in collected format (as most things are written for that format these days anyway). We shall see. I’m still enjoying the story overall and am willing to see where it goes, just a few potentially troubling signs that I hope I am just misreading.
@@CarlsCollection I'm well aware that the two years may have primarily been spent thinking and formulating all his ideas for the universe itself, so your point is fair enough in that regard. But even if we completely disregard those two years, my point still stands because every time a new title is launched, you get more lead time than you do when you just hop onto an existing title. As someone who loves, appreciates and understands the importance of CONSISTENCY in comic book publishing, there is no good excuse for launching a new title and already needing a fill-in issue after only 3 issues. If the story gets really good, this will ultimately be forgiven and forgotten. But right now I see it, for me personally at least, as many nails in the coffin.
That 10th printing for TF is so foul 🤣🤣
It is, and it was one i immediately added to my pull list when it was revealed awhile back. Not shying away from his fate! Respect!
"It needs to be Batman without being Batman!" - Carl Rocketfellers is a surprisingly charming book that is wholesome and fun, but I love how ominous they are making the creepy hunter lady from the future. Hopefully they stick the payoff there.
I was honestly excited to read how they were going to deal with a slow paced car chase! I’ve been robbed of that! Very much agree about Rocketfellers. So charming but some elements of real threat looming & a weird floating eyeball. A fun book for sure!
I love the idea that Scott Snyder was watching Paw Patrol with his children, saw Rubble with his construction vehicles and thought "yep, that's a Batmobile all right!"
In my head, that is EXACTLY how it happened.
Incredible variants! Nice eye candy.
There are so many variants that do nothing for me, but yeah, these all got me!
Tom Reilly exemplifies the approach to sequential art Alex Toth preached. Simplify, tell the story.
He really does! It might not be for everyone, but I love it!
Reilly's art hasn't really moved me, mainly because it's too simplistic and cartoony for my taste, but credit where its due, he has really stepped up his game with the art in this 1st G.I. Joe issue! Some really nice moments throughout the story and even some higher level techniques used as well as some dynamic and interesting camera angles that I hadn't previously noticed in other art of his that you've previously shown. Great idea for a video, Carl, well done!
For me, it all comes down to his storytelling. Maybe one of the best examples to show from my own collection would be the page I have from Duke #1 & how he intelligently condensed multiple pages of DWJ action from the Duke/Starscream encounter from TF #2 & put it all on one page. He has a knack for placing the camera in the right place. I do quite understand the critique though. I also agree that with Duke & now GI Joe…it does feel leveled up.
@@CarlsCollection As I said, it's simply a question of stylistic preference, not a negative critique on the art quality itself. But yes, your Duke #1 page is fab indeed! 👍
Poor word choice on my part, i honestly didn’t take anything you said as negative. I just took it as an opportunity to talk some more about what I really dig about his art! Wasn’t trying to convince you to love it or have the connection to the art that I do. I just love these sorts of conversations!
@@CarlsCollection Don't worry, pal, I DIDN'T take it that way at all. I was just wanting to make it clear that I wasn't denigrating the art, but rather pointing out that his art style isn't the kind that typically grabs me. All good, man!
fun video buddy, tom has great work, i need to get a few of his thing pages,
Thanks man!! Pretty sure they’re still listed on Modern Mythology at the holiday discounted prices. Some really nice gems there too. (I look often because it’s just what we do, right?)
When you read this issue, did you get the sense that it benefitted from the four mini series that laid the groundwork?
I do think it benefited greatly. Each of the mini series established and defined relationships of these versions of the characters. You could start with GI Joe and understand what is going on for the most part, but it will be a much more rewarding read for anyone who has read each of the 4 individual mini series titles.
another great vid my friend
Thanks brother!!
