Seward Alaska Halibut Fishing | Slow Pitch Jigging Rockfish | August 2021
Просмотров 2 тыс.2 года назад
Here's a video for my deep sea fishing trip in Seward, Alaska on Aug 27th, 2021. It was my wife's first fishing trip in the last few years. We both had a great time. I brought some slow pitch jigs on the trip with me, and although I didn't catch any halibut with it, I did do well on the rockfish, even though I was using the boat's rod/reel setup, which was not ideal for SPJ :)

    Dear Jim, this is the reel I own. I have been told by multiple people that this reel is too weak for bluefin over 200lb. Obviously you didn’t have a problem. Did you feel it was more than adequate for this class fish and will you continue to use it for this application?

    I find it funny how the mate said he doesn’t like the jigs he’s uncomfortable with them yet he sees you reeling in fish after fish after fish. You were really slaying them. I don’t care what I have to change. If I see somebody being successful I’ll try it.

    The rod looks too thin, do you think it would be good for 20/30kg fish?

    • @smashrc123
      @smashrc123 3 месяца назад

      Thin rod is always my favourite. It has a lot more fun then using thick rod. Check out Japanese fishing, the theory for Asian is to use thinner lighter gear to catch fish as possible. i think this rod can handle PE3-4 , means the most which is about 60lbs. So my estimation for your answer is yes. Even if wrong, it wont be too far off.

    • @JimFanFishing
      @JimFanFishing 10 месяцев назад

      1000 might be a bit small for deep water rockfish. I suggest you spool it with 20lb braid, and pair it with something like shimano game type slow J medium action.

    Awesome job, ive been loving doing this deep water spj recently. A little fun fact, those aren't actually vermillion rockfish theyre called sunset rockfish. Verms only live up to around 450-500 feet of water max, everything deeper is called a sunset. Its confusing because they look the same, taste the same, have the same limits and regulations, but are actually different species of rockfish just based off of depth.

    I got a 25 pound lingcod in 800ft water. The fight was epic! I was using OJ2000XG and Gametype slow J 500g. JIg was Johnnyjigs 400g gold torpedo. Search "洛杉矶海钓船长" in little red book. They are doing SPJ near Catalina. Good luck !

    I used these with the Team Catfish weight slides to make a ruclips.net/user/postUgkxdmsDj7fQXe77DC0l7P7ua8B3PiESUubM Carolina rig and they were perfect for the ponds I fish. I have also used them to make 3 way rigs and these work perfectly. Haven't had any issues with them snagging in rocks or in weeds yet.

    Final update: this little reel is the little engine that could ruclips.net/user/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e . It performed flawlessly and was easy to adjust drag in the moment while I was battling a 35lb bat ray behemoth. Mind you, this reel is spooled with only 25 lb braid and 25 mono topshot. It's paired with the kastking telescopic heavy power rod and the two work well together. This has now earned my respect and confidence when traveling and fishing. If you have ever hooked into large rays and sharks, you know they pull extremely hard and can run forever! This thing clamped down on the fish and was easy to adjust during the fight. It has a nice decently fast retrieve as well. Twice the fish went on mad runs and I was able to gain back line quickly to avoid spooling.
