I noticed you were resting your rod on the rail , when cranking a fish in. I heard that is a big no- no. Can't remember why but I've heard that a couple times. Nice video.

I would say for pure drag power, valiant is stronger, but ocea jigger feels smoother. on the cranking power, both are good, ocea jigger feels more ergonomic.

Great video man. I really dig your format. I also feel the same way when trying to learn a new technique and falling back to the old reliables. Ive heard people say when you're committed to learning a new style like surface iron or swim baits or spj, bring only that rod and give yourself no other option. tough to do

It is tough to do, especially when it's not working as well as you thought. I guess it's okay to fall back to your comfort way of fishing from time to time, since catching fish is still entertaining, even with a bait. But I've kept doing SPJ after the first couple "hybrid" trips. The more you practice, the better you get, but sometimes bait just works better than jig, and there are certainly times when jig outperformed the bait.

Thanks for the feedback, John! Currently it's a bit difficult for me to capture both the rod tip movement and the reel with just one gopro mounted on my head. But it's something I'll be thinking about!

Very cool video Jim! It's so interesting that you guys on the west coast enjoy heavier and longer rods while over here on the east coast, our rods are much slimmer and shorter. My longest slow jig rod is 6'10 and the vertical jigging rods are from 5'4 - 5'8. Good luck and tight lines!

Now that I've tried the longer rod, I think a 6'6 or 6'8 will work just fine on a party boat here in California.

@@JimFanFishing I caught a yellowfin trying out slow pitch using a 100gm colt sniper on a tsunami trophy rod Heavy paired with an Avet MXJ ruclips.net/video/ko1aGjujiXw/видео.html
I’ve caught Johnny Bass, Vermillion rockfish, spotties, and halibut on the same setup but using a Major Craft Jigpara slow pitch 120gm. Haven’t gone out to use my Accurate 500n and 600nn. Hopefully soon. Tight lines!!

I use a 10-foot fluorocarbon leader between spectra and the jig.

Both are great. I like the ocea jigger for its smoothness. Valiant has more drag, but it's not needed for rockfishing.

Keep up the great content! I’m about to go out on Tuesday and try slow pitch jigging. I wanted to ask, what size hooks are you using on your jigs?

Thanks! I use size 3 hooks. one on top and one on bottom. California only allows 2 hooks max for bottom fishing. Good luck with your trip!
