Woolf's techniques that you describe are referred to as time and space montage: stopping time and moving in space or stopping space and moving in time. When Mrs. Dalloway is out that first morning, everyone is looking at the plane flying overhead, which is what allows Woolf to shift to different characters having the same observational experience. While Katherine Mansfield was the first to use them, Woolf perfected these techniques, I think, more than any other writer of the period.

I totally loved your descriptions of Boulder. I lived on Mapleton Ave for three very special years. We spent so much time in those beautiful mountains although I was always afraid of the wildlife on hikes. I worked at The Dairy Center for the Arts. At the time, The Naropa Center offered some classes in our facility and so I met their staff and learned a lot about their organization and history. Anne Waldman is incredible. Is the Beat Bookstore still on East Pearl St? Sounds like you had a great time out there. Presently, I'm reading "The Slip" by Prudence Peiffer about Coenties Slip at the southern tip of Manhattan, where several important artists had lofts between 1956 and 1967 (E Kelly, J Rosenquist, J Youngerman, A Martin, R Indiana, etc.) I'm totally digging it but I really love the setting, subject matter and NF genre. marjorieapple.substack.com

Loved hearing your thoughts on To The Lighthouse. I can never decide which is my favorite Woolf, it or Mrs D.

I love Dorothy! I want to collect everything from them, so I'll definitely be picking up their new books this fall. And I'll be starting my first Renee Gladman soon too! Can't wait! I have only ever hiked one 14er - I think it was Quandary Peak? What an experience!!! Coming down was way scarier than going up!

Oh yay! Which Gladman are you starting with? Is it in your recent book haul? Going down the peak…so hard because of the tiredness, right?🤓🥰

I've really been wondering about The Hypocrite so I'm glad you talked about it. Oh, it's been years since I read Member of the Wedding; I need to reread that. Great round up!

Thanks! Ooh I wonder what your take will be with The Hypocrite. I don’t think I said on the video but it might be that all 3 characters are hypocrites!

I'm reading a book about how slave narratives influenced Victorian fiction, mentioned by Hannah here on RUclips, it's become a project as some of the works mentioned I haven't read. Some of the arguments the author makes are very compelling particularly comparing the description Jane Eyre's seascape painting with the Turner painting of the Zong disaster.

Love all of your recommendations, many I didn't know of. I love The Awakening too. Passing by Nella Larsen is a great short one, and A Spy in the House of Love by Anais Nin is another I read this year and loved.

All of your health plans sound so exciting, particularly the yoga instructor journey!! I’ve done most forms of exercise, and really want to incorporate more yoga now that I’m 40 and have mainly done high intensity stuff. My body is a little worn out 😂I’ve been intending to try Yoga With Adrienne on RUclips, one of these days. Thanks for the update! Here in West Virginia my days are spent carting my high schooler to and fro, and my 8th grader to volleyball 😊Have a great rest of the week!

Haven't read any of these yet, although Bluets and The Awakening are definitely on my radar! My favourite short book is probably Christopher Isherwood's A Single Man, which I just read for the first time earlier this year. Wow. I don't think I've ever read another book that's so full of life and thrumming with energy. I saw a stage adaptation a few years back, which captured some of the poignancy, but the book is something else.
