Uniting a Non Viable Hive with a Queen Right Hive Chapter 2
This is Chapter Two of the video about "Uniting a Non-Viable Hive with a Queen Right Hive", initially meant to be a single chapter until the entire video would not upload to RUclips.
If you have not seen Chapter 1, here is a link to that video:
ruclips.net/video/J1piS5MFzNI/видео.html
Chapter 2 of the video deals with the finalization of uniting two hives using a double screen and in particular honey bee behavior regarding scenting or Nasanoving (using Nasanov Glands) and what to expect. Using a double screen is useful whenever uniting a two colonies where the queenright colony is significantly smaller than the other colony that is not queenright or has a drone layer. The screen allows the J...

Uniting a Non-Viable Hive with a Queen-Right Hive (foolproof method of finding a queen) Chapter 1.
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.3 года назад
This video is good for anyone that needs a foolproof way to find and separate the queen from the hive, especially if the queen has become or been replaced by a drone layer. It is also a good method to use when uniting any hives that will not accept a caged queen, i.e. any hive with a drone layer (which requires removal of the drone layer prior to queen installation) or any hive with laying work...
Results: Utilizing Swarming Hives Part II
Просмотров 10 тыс.6 лет назад
This is a follow up video for the video, "Utilizing Swarming Hives to Stabilize Hives In Trouble". In the previous video, I took two frames from a hive that was gearing up to swarm and inserted them into a queenless hive. Hive #6 is the queenless hive and in this video we go through the hive 16 days after those frames were inserted to see if it worked. Then we do the same to the host hive that ...
Utilizing Swarming Hives to Strengthen Hives in Trouble
Просмотров 13 тыс.7 лет назад
This video is all about taking resources abundant in one hive to aid in the survival of another hive, thereby helping both hives. The mother hive is beset with a break in the brood cycle enhancing their ability to deal with Varroa mites and stunting their brood production so that swarming is somewhat controlled. The other hive has at least a chance of rearing a new queen and surviving.
How to Strengthen a Weak Hive for Winter Part 4 Stimulating Brood Production
Просмотров 22 тыс.7 лет назад
This was filmed on the 9th of February. This hive is still looking good and has started to produce brood again after a winter break. Notice the change in the size of the cluster and see for yourself how they are doing! I am now starting to stimulate brood production in this hive using a different sugar syrup concentration.

This is a bit of a twist for my videos. Here I have a weak hive that is healthy, but just needs a boost. Rather than unite them with another hive I am going to baby them through the winter and hopefully get a thriving hive next season. Join me on this journey and see if we can save the hive!
Introducing Caged Queen and Splitting Hive (Most Effective Method)!
Просмотров 103 тыс.8 лет назад
This video has a primary and secondary point. The first is a method that can be used to get a purchased queen successfully accepted by a hive. Mainly this involved using very young bees that are more likely to accept a new queen and give them no options to re-queen themselves (meaning don't add any frames with eggs on them). The secondary message is to split a hive successfully. In my video, I ...

Hive Inspection Series Part 3: Evaluating the Queen
Просмотров 49 тыс.8 лет назад
This is a video intended to explain common, and uncommon, problems you may see with a queen in order to differentiate problems with queens. These are separate and distinct problems that may form when the root of the problem is the queen herself. In these cases, re-queening will solve the problem. I felt it important because many other problems that are not caused by a faulty queen may be observ...
Hive Management: Uniting Hives

This video is simply intended to explain various methods of uniting two honey bee hives, and show how to use the newspaper method. There are, of course, simpler and different methods to use but the newspaper method should always be considered. When the two colonies are dropped to single hive body colonies this method is definitely the simplest. Also, consider thumb tacks or tape to hold the new...

Minute 12:00 A 3 pipe system has been designed to use the byproduct of 1 head as the means to condition the next. Its not nearly as popular and a good bit more extensive. Minute 18:00 Cleaning... pour some 30% vinegar into the vondensate pan of the head as a means to clear scum out of the condensate line. Ideally you are drained using gravity rather than a pump but in either case, its a good prevention measure.

Keith, As usual, your videos are quite informative even for experienced beekeepers like me. It is obvious that you are a “beekeeper” and not a “person who just keeps bees.” Keep up the good work and maybe you could share your experiences with introducing queens of one variety into a queen-less colony of another variety. Example: I’ve introduced Saskatraz or Carniolan queens into colonies comprised of mostly Italians. In many instances the colony kills the queen while she’s still in the cage. Thanks for your excellent videos.

Very nice video about combining hives and “scenting.” Concerning the bees congregating on the back at the old entrance area. A method I use for great airflow is to staple 1”x2” strips of 1/8” thick plastic sign board material in each corner of the telescoping cover. Using old political signs is one way to put them to some good use. That way, you can close off the vent notch if needed and the hive still has great airflow on lol four sides. I staple these plastic strips on all of my covers and they do not fall off.

Just recheck your information there buddy. Slightly incorrect. But i like your photage 👍 The Nasonov pheromone is released by worker bees to orient returning forager bees back to the colony. When a bee stings, she releases an odor called an alarm pheromone to alert others to the danger. This alarm pheromone smells like bananas and attracts other bees to come to the defense of the hive.

In your opinion, what time of year in Colorado, zone 5b, is it too late to expect a queen to get mated. This year has been interesting as far as weather goes. I realize it's late in the year, is there still hope or would I be better off combining my hives?
