Beeswax Rendering Part 2: From Solar Extractor to Final Product

- Starting off where part 1 ended, I take the block of wax rendered by the solar extractor, render it down a little further and then do one last melt, filter the wax and pour it into molds.
One thing I forgot to mention during filming is that you should be careful when filtering to use a material that will not discolor the wax. Usually, in addition to using old t-shirts (cotton) it is safer to use a good quality paper towel, or a large coffee filter. This assures that the wax will not take on any color changes. Once wax is discolored, I am unaware of any way to remove it. Instead, you may have to artificially color it, back to its natural color...and I don't like that idea, personally. Hope you like the video!
I don't even have bees and I've watched probably a hundred videos on beekeeping this weekend. I should go to bed.
I feel your pain, got books too, LOL, I feel the draw, if you do, GOOD LUCK, I think it would bee awesome to have a few hives
yes billy but did u brush your teeth?
Dloweification dude same and this is some new obsession I found in the last 2 days. I bet next week it'll be something completely different. RUclips is awesome.
Dloweification i doing the same thing
same here, the thing is that even after checking what you can do with bee wax, I still have no idea what I would do with them and even less why I'm watching that when I watched like 2 different channel with videos about processing wax.
I have watched a lot of videos on rendering wax on youtube and this is one of the best.
I liked this! Bee keepers work so hard I have a new respect for them!
End product is beautiful. Didn't think you could do that with solar. Amazing.
The little blocks look like bars of gold... so pretty!
Really good to see how you do this. I have only 4 hives but I still get some wax that I should render. I’ll be following your method when I do. Thanks for the video.
Fantastic.
Homemade stackable Bars of beautiful homemade bee's wax.
My highest compliment, subscribed!
VisionStills what's beeswax used for?
Oh my, the possible and traditional uses are nearly endless.
Making candles, coating and sealing cheese for aging, hand creams, balms, salves, moisturizers, shoe and furniture polish, mustache wax, surfboard wax, a "resist" when making colored Easter eggs, lubricant for some musical instruments, modeling wax for lost wax casting... and it is used in many cosmetics.
That's just a few uses I could think of, I'm sure there are plenty more.
Fantastic! This was great, thank you so much!!! Merry Christmas and God bless.
Good tip on heating the filter. Thanks for the video.
+Calvin King Thanks for taking the time to comment. I'm glad you liked it.
+Honey Bee Honey what is the use of that beeswax block?
+yundaime07 For me it measures out 1 pound of wax, is in pure form and is an attractive way to sell it. However, I also use it to make candles. For other people they purchase it because they need a lot to make candles, lip balms, creams, lotions, etc.
I wish I had seen this video last week before processing my first beeswax batch, would have saved me a lot of headache. Great vid! I use cheesecloth and agree it isn't fine enough to catch the smaller propolis but what I do is triple layer the cheesecloth and make sure the pattern crisscrosses. I also filter twice but I don't have a solar wax melter.
I used to do the exact same thing and it does have its advantages, mainly that cheesecloth won't discolor the wax at all. Thanks for watching!
A lot easier to do than what I have been doing....now I have lost my stove i set up a solar melt today.....and the wax melts easily, pouring it in to something else is where it stopped.... but now I have seen your video shall set it up the same, also using a gas stove I thought was a bit no, but obviously not.....a pot of water and a coffee pot or two....thank you for sharing... cheers
Beautiful wax!!!!
Great video. No problem with sound because I watched it with headphones.
My volume is on full! I can only barely hear....but thanks for the great video!
@@robinstrand3555 I disagree the sound levels went from very soft to normal then back to very soft with the change in camera angles. Content creators should be aware of sound levels if they record with the mic on the camera as it will change as they move closer and away from the camera, it happens all the time. A wireless mic would take of this problem.
Good video now I just have to buy a few oz blocks. Thank You Loader.
Thanks for a clean environment, to process your beeswax. Some videos on RUclips, are beyond gross!
Thanks!
thank you for making this video
Your Welcome, thanks for watching!
OK, much better, great vid.thx
Where did you get the pot you put the wax in, in the double boiler? Coffee pot?
Pour the water in your yard, not down your drain. That's the fastest way to screw your drains. Wax particulate can stick around long enough to build up a huge ass plug somewhere in your bends down under your house. You never EVER want to pour material that's touched wax down your drains, it's a recipe for disaster.
Where did you get the silicon molds from
thats bountiful
Do you have any issues with your molds turning brown? I have the ounce mould and i havent used it yet and its turning brown.
the can of the double bottom heater should not sit right over the pan with no water in between, the bottom gets the full power of the flame. btw, awesome and beautiful end product.
Thanks
Add a metal trivet under the pot, that will give you the real double boiler effect
I absolutely found this fascinating! Next time if you could speak up or turn up the volume of whatever you used to tape this, it wouldn't be such a strain to hear!! Thank you!! Going to look to see if you have other videos!!!
+Cheryl Pavlik Hi Cheryl, I have indeed made changes to my sound, by purchasing a different mic. There is definitely a problem with some viewers, though i'm not sure why. When I watch the videos through RUclips, the sound is good in this video. You might try checking sound settings for your web browser, or if you watched a few videos from different channels in the same session and had no problem hearing sound until you watched my video, let me know.
Thanks for the enthusiasm!
Thank you!! I will check. I do not watch lots of utube videos, maybe one a month!! I make soap and lotion bars and was glad I found your video. Nicely informative! God Bless!!
+Cheryl Pavlik I'm glad you liked it and thanks for the feedback!
Do you make your own mods? It so, what is the name of the mold rubber you are using and where did you purchase it. I make molds but have not seen this particular product.
Can you email me. I have questions about mold making I need to make these molds! heather2587@gmail.com
Really neat video, just one question, what are the molds made of? They seemed pretty flexible when you pulled out the wax, my guess would be some kind of rubber?
Silicon. Thanks for asking.
A coarse brush works great at cleaning propolis on the bottom (or so I've heard)
Nice molds you have there where did you get them.
+TheCraftyskill Hi. I ordered them from Mann Lake Ltd. online. Thanks.
Thank you
great video! sound is great! I use sheer curtains instead of cheese cloth. what is the average price of 1 oz bars? have you ever colored your wax?(candles)
The average price varies widely depending on where you live. Hobby Lobby sells pure beeswax and can be used as a good metric in your area, though I always price mine higher because I have more inputs and I know it is natural and exactly where it comes from! I have colored the wax in the past...works great! I prefer the natural color myself though.
thanks again.
I bought a block of beeswax and its a bit more brown than yellow why is that and should it have a strong odor?
Beeswax should smell of honey and the colouring could be from how it's been filtered OR even as you get different colour honey from different flowers... different flowers - different beeswax colour.
if you watch Coyote Peterson eat wild killer bee honey [he's on youtube], it's very different in colour to "domestic" honey more brownish than golden yellow.
www.honeycandles.com/blogs/beeswax-blog/why-does-the-color-of-beeswax-vary-so-much
Would like to mention at this time, anyone who feels what
i've written needs correcting, please go ahead. I'm no Apiarist
I watched and figured it out as you went along...well mostly...couldn't hear most of what you said...but it looked interesting
so this is just the caps? can you melt down the comb too and the entire thing aside from the honey like this?
You can. However, I have two solar extractors and keep cappings separate from all other types of wax (burr comb, scrapings, queen excluder cleanings, etc.).
Where did you get your 1 ounce molds - I can find it anywhere. Could lead me to the right supplier. Thanks
I can't remember exactly, but it would be either Kelley Bees (kelleybees.com), Mann Lake Ltd, or Brushy Mountain Bee Farm. I think Betterbee might have them also.
I thought it can be transparent 😍 that would be insane
Hi! Where do you buy the molds? I can't find them online!
+Karen Yu Hi Karen, I purchased these from Mann Lake Ltd, www.mannlakeltd.com. Also you can do a search for Betterbee...they have an interesting array of molds as well. Thanks for watching!
Do you ever cool wax in the fridge? Does that affect the wax?
Eli McCutchen if it sets too quickly the surface will crack, and if it's really quick you might even have propolis and grot still mixed with the wax instead of settling out.
Where did you buy your molds from?
Do you use mold release or anything in your mold?
Not in silicon molds.
Do you have any wax worms for sale or bee pollen
Whats the going price for wax these days. Thanks have a good one
As I've only roughed out my wax so far. Why could not the various secondary stages all be done in a solar melter.
They could be done in a solar extractor providing that the design of the extractor allows full sun to hit the drain pain at all times. Since the drain pain sits below the melting pan, most designs only allow partial sun to hit it, and since it is lower the temperature is naturally going to be lower as well. In my extractor where the drain pan only gets partial sun, the wax tends to solidify on top of the filter, which just creates a mess.
Honey Bee Honey very busy over here thinking how to do the whole process solar - in my central Victorian summer a daily maximum above 35° is pretty routine, and our solar intensity is equivalent to the Sahara, so I reckon the North American restrictions on solar probably won't be an issue for me.
A food grade fine chinois (an extremely fine mesh sieve) would work as well for initial filtering.
They stack like gold bars lol
My question is what them moulds are made off?
They are silicon molds that I purchased from one of the larger beekeeping supply catalogs.
interesting subject matter, but jeeze man, please work on the volume levels. i turn one scene up loud enough to hear what your saying, then the scene changes and the volume level is loud enough to scare the dog out of the room. just sayin'
I've since fixed that problem, but I have to go back and level the sound on this and a couple of videos. Still learning.
great news. subject matter most important. best luck.
thanks for the chuckles, and I agree, my volume is on 100, some good some bad, but it's still a wonderful bit of information, Thanks Honey Bee Honey.. More to come, maybe
why does solar extractor wx always look better? brighter orange yellow
What do you do with this wax?
Wiz Loo google it
Why don't you put the pan(with hot wax) in cold water so that it solidify with in 5 minutes rather than having to wait it for hours ?
Music is fine sounding but audio has me straining to hear it? Would like to here more of your project. Have a good one.
Can somebody tell me where can I'get those tiny glass jars?
know it's a year late but, look up mini jam jars, that should help. they hold roughly 1oz
Interesting
Nice sir, if possible pls raise audio in editing machine and upload again.
Thanks
Great job how much is the beeswax$
ugh, lost comment, :'-(, even on the TV, volume goes UP and down bunches, but honestly, no need to remake, new is better, :-D, thanks for all the informative vids, HUGS
What are those molds made out of, and how were they made?
They are silicon molds and I get them from beekeeping supply outlets such as Kelley Bees, Dadant, Brushy Mountain Bee Farm, Mann Lake Ltd, etc.
Honey Bee Honey Thank you! I was about to ask, but thought I should check the comments first. Too bad the people complaining about the volume didn't. By the way, I could hear you. Thanks again, and keep making these fantastic videos!
I heard coffee filters work too!!!
Do you sell the wax?
dat wax crazy
Do you use the propolis?
No, I should but haven't to date.
I will buy your propolis if you'd like to sell it.
it looks like cheese yum
feel like honey right now
This video as well as the part 1 video should be pulled and remade or have the audio fixed in both part 1 and 2.
900 decibel intro, .1 decibel speaker
Why the wax is it worth money
paul1x1 bout $20/lb
I can't hear it.figure out how to increase the volume
At max volume it is like you are whispering. I am using my home theater stereo even.
In the past subscribers have commented that stereo systems weren't working. Have you tried watching the video on a phone or with the computers speakers. Obviously there is a problem and I am trying to re-work the video sound. Thanks for letting me know and if any of the above change anything that would be helpful as well.
Honey Bee Honey It really shouldn't make much difference. Stereos can usually do more amplification. I will try watching this later on and see if it gets better. Thanks.
Honey Bee, can you re-do these videos again and maybe wear a mic? I watched the vid and couldn't hear what you were saying.
Most of what you said I could not hear as volume was too low or you are too far away from mic
was really hard to hear video on part 2 can barely hear it
Hi! De qué tejido está hecho el colador?
Creo que es algodon
Ok gracias!
I'm sure it has been mentioned before but you need a mic...
Got my volume up 100% and can't hear your voice
You need to either talk louder or turn up the volume on your mic please can bearly hear you.
he sounds like markiplier
somethings wrong cant hear
Wow what a disappointment I really wanted to see the video's but I can not hear this one either! I stopped the other one half way threw because I couldn't hear and can not hear this one either
You need to keep your voice up or get a lapel Mike in order to hear you better. Show more of your processing procedure and less of you. Action is louder than words!
To bad there's no volume
You can't hear hardly anything you're saying in these videos.
+William Labes Sorry about that. Another subscriber had problems while listening with earphones, when he removed them and turned up the internal volume on his computer he could hear. Hope this helps.
+Honey Bee Honey I was using the computer speakers.
I honestly don't know...when I download the video I don't have any problem hearing it. If I hear anything I'll let you know though.
Sorry but couldn't hear you volume is to quiet not good
Logan kno
The audio is horrible.
Pi can't hear you and I'm not deaf
Couldn't hear most of what you said!!!
Sorry about that. Some people have said that going through speakers, rather than headphones helps. The sound is fine on my side, but I will redo the video this year.
Honey Bee Honey I still watched the video and I've subscribed 👍😆👍 What I managed to hear was very informative and still enjoyable👍😉👌
Thank you very much!
kinda looks like cheese
Dnt wanna grill that on some bread tho
Audio is weak
Get a mic if you’re going to give info to subscribers
I dont own bees, wont keep bees, dont like bee stings, but do like bee honey -- I just want to see you bite that big brick :(
Video is way to quite!!
Ageijfجيكئي جيكي
why not poor it through a strainer
I did, it was in the video.
Can't hear a word you're saying. Thumbs down on the video for not checking audio.
Thanks for taking the time to let me know why you gave it a thumbs down.
Changed it to thumbs up for taking the time to respond
Thanks. Sorry about the sound, but if you're a beekeeper I've fixed the audio since that time.
you talk too much ....
