Today's 33 km walk from Aljucen to Aldea del Cano was particularly cold. A line of cold air passed through the region, keeping temperatures around 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Today's walk was very remote. The 45 km route from Monesterio to Zafra only goes through one village. The scenery was amazing, with an unexpected encounter with highly toxic caterpillars.

      The weather was very nice. The only chilly day was the first day when I walked in the rain; however, the rest of the trip was pretty warm (upper 70s F). At night, I just used a sleep sack and my quilt. (www.rei.com/product/147651/therm-a-rest-vesper-down-quilt-32) Most nights I didn't really need the quilt. A you will see from some of the videos, some days were hot. However, when I went to Finnesterre it was rainy and cool, but still nice. So excited for your trip. Enjoy and be sure to post pictures!

    Was it difficult to find your way out of Porto to the coastal route? I’m doing this in May and that’s my only concern is that I read it’s confusing on day 1! Did you find it OK to find the route from cathedral?

    • @TammyKraft

      I did not have difficulty finding my way on the coastal route. It is well marked and once I reached the river from the cathedral, I just followed it to the coast. I use the "Buen Camino" app for all my hikes because it does have a GPS tracker, so you know where you are and the the trail is at all times. easy to find my way when I got of course. Enjoy your trip. You will have such a wonderful time. Be sure to post lots of pictures on the Camino Portuguese Facebook page.

    How developed is the infrastructure on the La plata compared to Frances and what is the difficulty ratio?

    • @TammyKraft
      @TammyKraft 7 месяцев назад

      As you will see from my other videos, the Via is less populated than the Frances. However, we did not have trouble ever finding accommodations. Our biggest issue was the inconsistent distances between towns making it necessary on some days to to either have short day or long days. We followed the Camino app and always had water, food and shelter. It is a beautiful route with lovely people and not very difficult. I'd avoid walking in the hot months as there is very little shade. I only had two weeks for the hike and will return next year! Enjoy!

      To encourage you to do it, I’ve done the Camino Frances, Portuguese, via de la plata , and via Francigena and have never had an issue. Most places are very conscientious about bed bugs. But there is also a spray for your sleep sack called Permethrin that works excellent. I used it when I walked the Appalachian trail to keep ticks and bug away. Worked great.

      Expensive hotels can have bedbugs just as often as cheaper accomodations. I have walked 5 Caminos and have yet to see a single bedbug. Book at albergues that have bedbug proof mattresses, spray you sleeping bag and pack with Permythrin and check other mattresses and frames.
