The Lilting Banshee on Penny Whistle - Wild Sparrow Sessions
This is a more advanced chording pattern as compared to our other video on the Lilting Banshee.
Notes:
- I’ve got the capo on fret 1 which isn’t necessary for playing the chords but makes the melody easier to play if I decide to take the lead
- See the our other video on the Lilting Banshee for an example of an easier chord pattern
- My lute dulcimer is shorter and plays in the key of G so if I were playing a longer lute dulcimer in D the chord names would need to be transposed to D. Example: the G chord would become a D chord, Am would become Em etc.
- I totally played a C chord instead of D in the ‘B’ part but hey, can’t change it now
Thanks to Lauren for her musical skills!

A Drop Of Nelson's Blood - Tutorial for 7-String Lyre (or 6-String)

a.k.a. Roll The Old Chariot Along This is one of my favorite shanties because the lyrics and melody are so repetitive it's easy to remember. It's great for beginners! - Tuning: I'm tuned to the same tuning you see in most of my lyre videos. The first 6 notes of a major scale are strings 2-7 and string one is the 6th note an octave lower. @@zacharylindahl okay gotcha. I’ve got a little time today so let’s see if I can explain this. This is a link to the melody that I found after a Google search: musescore.com/user/40010044/scores/11294197 Here’s a quick and dirty run down for how to write tabs for the notes… Every line and space that a note can occupy is a different note. You can directly relate the notes to the frets for the double string/melody string of a dulcimer. This song starts on the bottom line of the musical staff, that will be fret 2 for the tab*. The second note is on the second line from the bottom, that’s two notes higher, that’ll be fret 4 (the space between those lines would be fret 3). The third note of the song is on the space just above the previous note so the tab goes up one position so the third note is fret 5. The fourth note moves back down to the line below the previous/the same as the second note so that would be fret 4 again. To break it down, each successive space or line moving up or down directly relates to the tabs moving up or down frets to write out the tabs. To get you started the first 4 measures (notes between the vertical bars) should be as follows: 2454 | 2454 | 24444 | 32120 Let me know if you have questions or want to send something to check. You can play these tabs in the traditional style, strumming all the strings while changing the tabs on the double string/melody string. *tablature depends on the key of the music

    I've sometimes seen the type of instrument you describe as a lute dulcimer labeled as a "banjo dulcimer" (with a seemingly very similar form factor) Is this a common alternative appellation ?

    • @wildsparrowstrings
      @wildsparrowstrings 3 месяца назад

      Hum, perhaps, I personally haven't heard it called this before but it all depends on what someone decides to call their instruments. Although there is a variation of a lap style dulcimer with a banjo head where the bridge is that is called a "banjo dulcimer" or by some a "dulci-banjo". So the term might also be a little ambiguous if used for both instruments. However, if a lute variety dulcimer was made with a banjo body/hide like top I could see the name "banjo dulcimer" being very applicable. I feel like having an instrument's top being made of a material used on banjo or a banjo like stringing would more warrant the classification as a banjo hybrid.

    Would a Merlin dulcimer’s double strings be on top of the sheet music line or bottom?

    • @wildsparrowstrings
      @wildsparrowstrings 3 месяца назад

      Their dulcimers are oriented in the same configuration so the double string will represent the top line of tablature I write. However, in traditional mountain dulcimer tablature it will be the bottom line. Mountain/lap dulcimer tablature is written in reverse of guitar and lute dulcimer tablature. If you're unsure then I would ask which line, top or bottom, has more tablature notation in it? This is usually going to be your double/melody strings.

    Hi, first of all thank you for the wonderful tutorials! Although with this one I got a bit confused, because if I see and hear it correctly, you play something else than what is written in the video. I’m talking about 2 sequences, the: 3 3/1 4 5/1 5 5 4/2 3 2 “3/5” The “3/5” sounds and looks like you are playing the “3/1” is this correct or is it a typo? And the same with the sequence starting with: “7 7 7/1 and ending with 2/1” Should the 2/1 be 3/1? I was playing around with it, and it sounded weird so I took a closer look, and it looks like you are just playing the 3/1 and not 3/5 or 2/1 😅 Sooo hope my message doesn’t come off rude…English is not my first language.😊 Anyway! Thank you for sharing the tutorials, I’m having a lot of fun with them!

    • @wildsparrowstrings
      @wildsparrowstrings 4 месяца назад

      Yes, wonderful observation! You are correct, those are typos. It should be 3/1 for both of those. I haven't had time to go back and make edits to this video.
