Mix in some Marvels per the instructions on the jug for the next 6 months of gas fill ups. If it isn't worn out rings, your rings will become compliant again, reseal and your smoke will go away (and your tractor will be happy).

Years ago I was having an issue with my 8n where it would start but would stall out after a minute or so. A friend of mine who does small engine repair told me before starting it to take a hammer and give the carburetor a couple of whacks. There is a cork ball float in the carb that gets stuck and the taps on the carb free it up. It works for me! I keep a stubby hammer in the tool box.🙂

Brakes are cheap and easy to fix on an 8N. Change the seals too. Brakes are used in primary steering with any tractor. You really need some front wheel weights. You may have to buy a parts tractor to get them. You could also fill the front tires with water. An old gym weight set can be used to mount on the front bumper, they could even be bolted to the front rims. I have rear wheel weights on the rear wheels of my 8N and they weigh 400# each. A Sherman 3 speed transmission makes a very safe tractor, especially in reverse gear. They are quite expensive on ebay but are well worth the $1000 or so. The 2 speed Sherman does not have compound low, so stay away from that one. I also welded a dozen weld-on hooks in various places on the boom so that a purchase can be made very easily on odd items using chains.

A lot of people have converted the 6 volt system over to 12 volt. I recommend keeping 6 volt system as long as possible. If you have generator problems, take it to a competent auto electric repair shop and have it repaired. I have a ‘51 project 8N that was converted to 12 with home made alternator bracket that caused the lower alternator bracket to pinch the lower radiator hose nearly shut and it had a belt that was way to small. I replaced with new alternator and universal brackets, had to find a belt that would fit(42X5/8), and a volt meter instead of an ammeter. All this cost about $200 and was a pain to get the belt aligned(Chinese made stuff is never right). I have a 1949 8N that has been our family since 1966, I completely rebuilt the engine last year an have kept the electrical 6 volts and it runs like a top. I you have your fuel and ignition system maintained right and the starter is good, even though 6 volt turns over slow, the engine should fire right up. I see you also have the dreaded leaky axle seal problem which is common on most pre 1950 8Ns. That’s probably why your brakes don’t work. They have been converted from dry brakes to wet oil soaked brakes. That’s the next restoration phase on my ‘49. Make sure the left hood to dogleg join is kept clean, this is a common rust out area. I think the radiator overflow tube is on the left side and over the years excess coolant causes this area to rust from spray.

You're 100% correct. Both my 2N and 8N are both 6 volt. I wouldn't have bought them if they weren't... too many electrical wired nightmares when converting to 12 volt. They're junk. Keep it simple and original exactly how it was supposed to be.

I have such an excavator. The disadvantage is that the wheels and the support feet are attached at a 45 degree angle. It can be difficult to load onto a trailer. If the wheels were not inserted at an angle but at a 90 degree angle, the width could be varied better. The cylinder under the excavator is also a nuisance, it should be on top. But the excavator is very solidly built and works well. In 2 hours I unpacked and assembled this excavator.

What would you use the thumb for? With the lack of reach, mobility and boom height I don't see much use for it on mine (different brand, but same machine). I have gotten a ton of work out of mine as well. Once you got it, you will really miss it if is gone. Only replacement would be a tracked one with 360deg swing. But that is a different price level completely. With the basic controls and rough hydraulics you really learn how to operate an excavator :-) Taking slices of the ground and not filling the bucket, being light on the controls and developing an eye for slope and grading. I got the big bucket for grading work as well. It is handy if grading but really too heavy for the machine.
