    IMPORTANT note here: my friends have 3D printers from prusa and we were printing huge amount of the same parts, so we decided to do some speed printing comparison, mainly between the prusa mini and the prusa MK3S. The MK3S is faster and brings more precision to the build even during high speeds, WHEN you let them run faster. the prusa mini cannot be sped up so much as the MK3S, and even in speeds that it does allow, the printing quality does not match the MK3S. Not fully sure, but i am confident that it has to do something with (at least in my mind) pretty stupid flimsy design of the mini, that does not support the printing head so well and allows for more movement, especially during high speed/accelerations of the mechanism. compared to that, the MK3 or MK4 basically don´t have any play at all, which allows them to print way faster. they probably restricted the speed, and for a good reason, not only the print quality takes a big hit, but also it might significantly increase wear of the mechanism, whereas the double supported MK3S and MK4S are not suffering from such problems.

    I have seen more and more bad printing, bad firmware and bad reviews, bad stringing, with no solutions apart from smaller nozels, lower temp, thought they would of sorted this by now, so grateful for your honesty with this machineI have now cancelled my order.

      I feel my machines have improved with newer firmware. And I would imagine newer printers leaving Prusa have made improvements as well. I am reasonably happy with my 5XL now that I have added the enclosure. But it's a huge price tag. I am tempted to sell my OG Single TH and purchase another to see if things have changed. The print size is great. And if you're a hobbyist, I think you'll be able to tune it enough. A lot of my subscribers really like theirs. I think it comes down to what type of things you are printing. And how much time you have to dial it in. Thanks!

    I replaced my Bambu Labs X1C with this exact same set up. Huge improvement. For many, many reasons I encourage everyone to NOT buy and X1C. Some people will have gotten lucky or not use it enough to wear it out but almost universally at around the eight to nine month mark it starts breaking expensive bits that need replacements you can only get from one source which is persistently out of stock of the most important parts and circuit boards. The fact that these expensive replacement parts are out of stock so often should tell you all you need to know about the long term reliability of Bambu's products. Sorry, the anger over being took by Bambu is hard to get over. Anyway, this set up. I have even less space than you do and have the enclosure as well. I also do not like leaving my filament out to the open air like that. I live in Western Massachusetts and our humidity swings wildly these days. I built a dry box that holds the five rolls on bearings like yours are sitting on inside the box. The box opens from the front and the opening has a weather strip all around so when it's closed and latched it keeps the outside air out. There's enough room for a tiny dehumidifier to sit in the box as well. I mean nothing is going to make changing five rolls of filament fun with this sort of set up but as I didn't have the three grand extra for an XL with all five printheads it will do nicely. Being on the shelf above leaves a nice graceful curve for the tube so the filament doesn't have any drastic bends. Edit: If you are not the sort to build things with wood and plastic there is a dry box made for this available on aliexpress for about sixty bucks. It's not made by Prusa but it is in there colors so at least it will visually match.

    I have the MMU3 on my MK4 and I find I am also not using it as much. I tend to use my MK4 for TPU and Clear PETG prints and my two BambuLab X1C for most of my multi-color prints. I have also built several Box Turtles which are open source AMS-like systems for printers running Klipper. The MK4 w/MMU3 is a great setup but the need for a buffer and placement of spools seems to take up more space.

    Excellent video! Sorry for the lengthy comment in advance. I was initially leaning toward the Prusa XL, thinking it would finally meet my needs, but after watching your video, I’m now unsure about whether it’s the right choice for my specific requirements. To give you some context, what I primarily need from a 3D printer isn’t necessarily speed, but precision. I often prototype intricate parts that must fit together with tight tolerances, so accuracy is key. I was initially drawn to the Prusa XL for its build volume, which I thought would be ideal, as my typical print heights range from 2” (50mm) to a maximum of 14” (356mm). While I mostly work with single-color prints, I’m also open to multi-color or multi-material options when needed, like the XL promises. However, the most critical aspect for me is achieving a smooth surface finish akin to SLA prints, but without the associated hassle of maintaining an SLA printer. I’ve heard that the Prusa XL’s slicer now includes the Arachne perimeter generator, which promises improved print quality, and that was something I found promising. Based on your extensive experience with various machines, I’d love to hear your thoughts on which printer would best meet these needs. Specifically, I’m looking for precision, ease of use, and the ability to deliver professional quality prototypes, without the maintenance demands of an SLA system. I trust your judgment and would greatly appreciate any suggestions or guidance on what to consider next in my search. Should I keep waiting or should I take the plunge? Thanks again for all the valuable content you create, it’s been a huge help!

      I think the Prusa XL has improved greatly since the first rounds that went out. Right now, with the improved firmware, I prefer my 5XL. I have less issues now and it's fairly consistent. If you are not needing the multicolor, I would suggest the Single TH XL with an enclosure to make sure you don't have any warping on large prints. I think the main reason I prefer my 5XL is because my Single TH XL was one of the very first ones. And because I have swapped the nozzle on the 5XL to .4, and I am still running the .6 nozzle on the Single XL. I don't have any experience with anything else that can print this size. And Prusa Support is very good. Hope this helps! Thanks!

    If you want plug and play, its maybe not for you, but with a bit of thinkering you can make it use up less space, and also eliminate the buffer 😊 Just buy an Ikea Lack table for 10€, print 4 leg extenders and put the spools and the buffer over the printer. You dont even has to enclose it if you dont need an enclosure, hovewer, you absolutely can. One more thing, you dont even need the buffer. You can use rewind rollers. Most of the shared models doesnt work, dont have good slipping clutch mechanism, or they are bulky. But currently I am designing a spool holder for the Ikea lack table, which has compact, good looking RELIABLY WORKING auto rewind rollers, with precisely adjustable clutch slipping force. So the buffer will be completely eliminated, and the filament will be placed on the rollers. So there will be as little fiddling with the filament swaps as possible. So far the rollers are done, I am now working on the design of the frame, with a second row of filament holders. So it will be possible to put 5 spools to actively rewind rollers, and 5+ space for 5 additional spools just to have them near by 😊 I will share the final design when done and put the link here if someone is interested.

    I had an MMU2S, and it wasn't great. I upgraded to the MMU3 for my MK3S+, and it wasn't great. I upgraded to the MK4S, and it is great. It just works. I am working to get rid of the buffer with rewinding spool holders, which will minimize the footprint :)

    You are finally opening your eyes, prusa's mmu is not as good as bambu's ams that waste of space and time loading filaments are so problematic when in Bambu's ams is so fast and the Bambu is a finished good inventory not a skeleton ams like prusa's, greetings and happy holidays.

  • @upperairs

    Filament swapping is needed in 3D printing, we are seeing a remarkable change in the products being offered. The problem is that many just barely work and have problems. I like the approach that Prusa took with the XL. Mine has swapped heads with no problems, but I have had too many jams in the nextruder. I swapped all of the nozzles with the Phaetus SiC Nextruder version and everything has been working. My Bambu X1C with the AMS is great when it works, and I try to design prints with color changes on layers, resulting in much fewer swaps and less wasted time and plastic. I just received a Co Print system that is interesting, one head, but separate extruders feeding into a funnel going to the nozzle. In a few years we will have much better solutions.

    • @tada3dprinting
      @tada3dprinting 2 дня назад

      Yes, I am wondering if Prusa will make the XL system but smaller. But maybe it's just too expensive with the toolheads. I am doing ok between my XL and X1Cs. If one doesn't work, the other will. But I would like to have just one consistent printer if possible. Thanks!

  • @MikeKobb
    @MikeKobb 14 дней назад

    I would be tempted but since I have the XL I can use that for any multi-color prints that I need to do. It's not a business for me so I don't need to be doing multiple multi-color prints at the same time like you do. I do think that there's a real opportunity here for somebody to design a solution that works better for the MMU3. It seems like that piece that mounts on the printer is solid, so a compact setup for the spools with rewinders instead of the buffer seems like it would really slim the whole configuration down. I have to think that Prusa is looking at doing this with the Core One. They showed it with an MMU3 mounted but you had to take the top of the printer off. That only makes sense to me if they're going to put a new spool holder on top.

    • @tada3dprinting
      @tada3dprinting 2 дня назад

      My XL does a lot of my large multicolor prints. Yes, I am assuming the Core will have a slightly modded MMU. Thanks so much!

  • @Marcos-tj8nk
    @Marcos-tj8nk 14 дней назад

    If Prusa doesn’t release a compact MMU in 2025 (similar to Bigtreetech's VVD), they’re finished. Those who have tried multicolor printing don’t want to go back, and the MMU3 was already obsolete before it hit the market. They need an integrated MMU with a buffer in a humidity-controlled box. After that, they need to launch something like a CORE ONE XL with the same multimaterial system and an actively heated chamber. And for heaven's sake, add a damn brush to clean the nozzle!!

    • @tada3dprinting

    My MMU3 on my MK4 has been rock solid, I love the low waste as well. I just wish they could come up with something better to deal with filament handling as it is really fiddly to load. On the flip side I have a friend who is into Bambu with AMS but has had to upgrade his AMS to the Python kit to deal with poor filament winding. He has problems even with the Bambu spools. Seems everyone needs to work on filament handling with multi-color single nozzle setups.

      My AMS lite has been very good because it's basically a combination of the spool winder on the ams and the multi-bowden setup of the mmu3. It's basically the only multi filament setup I'm comfortable recommending at this point.

    • @JonLinde
      @JonLinde 13 дней назад

      My MK4S/MMU3 has been rock solid as well. Even printing 94A TPU, PC-CF, ASA with no issues. I mostly use the MMU to combine PETG and TPU, while using PLA for removable support. The most dramatic tuning I have made, is to add a 1 min. delay after the bed have reached target temperature. This allows it to heat soak a little and have basically eliminated the odd 1st layer errors I would have from time to time. I never used the spool holders from Prusa. I have made some dry boxes from IKEA365 with desiccant and moisture monitors. I installed longer PTFE tubes to enable me to keep my spools under the table for the printer (so my wife can reach them too). The buffer system is a bit tedious, but it works flawlessly. Everything can be accessed from the front, so the entire setup can be pushed against the wall. (I don't consider myself as a Prusa fanboy (FLSun T1 Pro arrives in 3 days))

    I had the MMU2 a long time ago and gave up on it. It never worked reliably. And the space required was crazy. I saw the MMU3 and it appeared to be a much better system. But once again, the filament management was not going to work. Your honest experiences with the XL were greatly appreciated. I know you haver had difficulties with your 5-XL. Fortunately mine has been working flawlessly. I am right now designing an alternative feed for the side mounted spools to eliminate the Bowden tubes. Thanks again for your videos.

      May I ask what brought you to buy an XL from the same company that you had reliability issues with two other products before, lack of alternatives?

    • @dsjove
      @dsjove 14 дней назад

      @@Davids6994 One product, the MMU2. At that time, many years ago, there were a few multi-color alternatives; and they were all problematic. The Prusa printers I have owned have all been reliable low maintenance workhorses with low cost of ownership - over many years. The XL and MK4 were admittedly rushed to market. But after a couple months of a flurry of firmware updates, they are working better than my others.

      I am going to keep the 5XL because the filament waste is low and loading, space etc issues from the MMU3 have been improved. Just wish they would make a smaller version that wasn't so expensive. Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for the comprehensive video! I have the CORE One on order and I, too, was like “the Prusa website doesn’t really show you how the MMU3 actually works….” Can’t wait to see it in action! I’m thinking of putting black and white into a dry box, and then bring the slots 3-5 in as needed. I have 11 Bambu X1C units with 14 AMS units so “parking” filament isn’t a big deal. Maybe some day they’ll have an MMU enclosure? Thanks again!

    • @tada3dprinting
      @tada3dprinting 12 дней назад

      Yeah if you're used to your Bambu X1C with AMS, the MMU3 will seem a little odd. The AMS are super easy to load filament, and the MMU3 are quite fiddly. I think if you buy the MK4 enclosure, you can print add-ons to mount the filament on both sides kind of like the XL. Thanks!

    Haha, so true. FYI, my cameras arrived and I've set one of them up. It feels to me like Prusa was rushing to have these available for Black Friday. Some of the support articles and such are not posted, and they haven't posted their mount designs on Printables yet, either. I whipped up something quick for my XL that will work for now.

      I just unboxed mine today and was a little surprised with the size. I think it will just barely fit in the corner of the enclosure but I probably will have to print a mount as well. Let me know if you find one you like. Thanks!

    I like the idea of the Prusa-Connect integrated Buddy camera - however I am not sure I can justify it, as all my Prusa printers are set up with Wyze cameras already. Although I am in the same situation as you - I dislike having to switch apps to view the camera.

      @@tada3dprinting They are taking orders, i think ship this month or jan. Cost is 1499 but advanced features, even does auto belt tension. and 300 x 300 bed. The most advanced one i have seen so far. But XL will nuke it for multicolor because the AMS concept with one nozzle is still inefficient.

    You do know I regard your mechanical skills as very advance? I know that you know your stuff your smart I have truth in your skills because I saw your work! I am a Building Engineer of skyscrapers 30 floor and higher I had to know and understand everything you can find in most big buildings I had my hands or eyes everywhere did this for almost 40 years bearing all of that I could be lost on many things today however I do believe I am right about the subject of mechanical things how the machine is set up most parts used and how they work to do the job that we ask it to do I say this knowing I am limited on the 3D parts as prints you have beat here! In other words I could wrong so I am here asking you not tell you anything! IMO the Core One is not that great a set up yes Prusa makes great machine with great parts I am looking at the much larger picture what the Core One is next to other machine of it class and price! I fully support the right to repair what you bought and paid for I dislike Bambu lab for doing that and closed source softwear and Prusa is open to both and today I live in France, so I don't any import tax or tariffs to pay! I disagree with two big things Prusa is doing they falling behind on tech knowledge and the Core One is wasting good space on the Core One and I dislike that which may explain why the cost of the MK4S is over price because people are not buy the Mk4 like the Bambu Lab A1 it is the cost that also pushing me away from Prusa and I know every well the MK4 is a great machine! I still like your videos I am still subscribe to you yes I gave a thumb up just because your smart! I am not leaving! I gave you my opinion only because your a nice content creator the best of luck to you!
