Old Ultrabook, New Tricks. Gen4 Thinkpad X1 Carbon
I recently picked up a gen4 (2016) Lenovo X1 Carbon Ultrabook. While it is no spring chicken, I think it is still pretty darn awesome. Join me as I try to spruce this thing up a bit and get Manjaro Linux installed.

great video and good cleanup on the damaged board. I highly recommend adding a wire from the relay pin to the other side of the trace (there are 2 pins - either will work). Whirlpool designers didn't do a great job of making that pc board. That trace is carrying a lot of current and designers didn't make that trace large enough. add the wire so you don't have to fix it more than once.

Currently I'm watching this on a 14" Dell Latitude E6420 from 2011, that I got from the ShopGoodwill online store for less than $100. It's pretty beat up, and has an optical drive so it's not quite thin and light, but with Debian 12 (GNOME desktop / Wayland) on an SSD with an i7-2720QM, it absolutely flies - I am gobsmacked at the performance. RUclips videos are no problem on the 1440x900 screen. I just hope its 8 gigs of RAM stay usable for the foreseeable future, allegedly it can handle more even though the specs say 8 GB is the max.

This kit has won. It has broken me. SD card mount fell off while I was fighting with the video circut resistors, because it either wouldn't stick, or bridge. I have no idea why the solder does this, but if ANYTHING in here is connected properly I'd be shocked. I've managed to put pins on my arduinos, and re-solder a thing or two but this is just too damn much. Ohwell.

@@DFX2KX If you're willing to persist, I'm happy to send you a new PCB with the SDCard connector pre-soldered for the price of postage only. Unfortunately, I'm in Australia, so that would be ~$15USD. If you need any of the other parts (resistors, etc.) that might need replacing, I can throw those in too.

@@TroySchrapel Yeah I did get it to stick again, partially.... But ultimately lost the war when it came to the 2N4401 for the keyboard. My eyes and tiny parts, man. Thanks for the offer, but I'll pay regular rate when I can get to it. Not your fault my eyes aren't great. That risk was calculated, :P It is smaller than it looks... I ended up jumping on it as a project in between packing sessions. After I get settled from the move, I'll order a complete one from ya (those caps and that transistor are freaking tiny as well) and I'll use this board as *de* soldering practice. I suspect I wouldn't have had nearly as many issues if I had gotten whatever Gel flux is being used here. And one of those magnifier/helping-hands combos. That too.

These boxes are fun. I'll probably start getting them after I move, would be great practice to alleviate my horrible Solder skills.

They are fun for sure! Hey, the more you solder, the better you get. Just take your time and don't get frustrated if it's not going your way. Take a step back and revisit after break.

@@JamiesHackShack The trick being to get myself to actually *sit still* long enough to do it. I watch these videos on the treadmill, and every time I'm not cleaning, working, or working out, I feel like I'm being unproductive. Having a Temu soldering iron with questionable temperature control probabbly doesn't help me either, lol.

@JamiesHackShack being in Hawaii, neither store is an option. Hopefully, they will open up a Microcenter someday. I call it the paradise tax. Damn near, everything costs more here, and we can't buy batteries in bulk. I can't even order batteries for my projects through Amazon. I've been putting my own packs together with recycled cells. 😂😮‍💨 At least that part has been fun. I got a battery tab welder, too. I might just do a short on that, but we'll see.
