  • ‪@retroCombs‬ asked if I could check out his SaRuMan 64K upgrade module. I got my dusty & neglected yet to be restored C16 out of the pile and onto the bench to give it a test for him. Of course this also brought to light the sad shape of my own C16. This is a very non-elegant round of chip swapping madness. The state of my own C16 remains questionable but in the end I think we can feel fairly confident this SaRuMan is most like A-OK.
Anyone know why a Kernal rom that tests good in my Plus/4 still has a checksum error in my C16 (that has no other diag errors)?
    Thanks for watching!

If you have actually read this far down and would like a HackShack sticker, figure out a way to get in touch with me and I'll see what I can do to get one to you! :-D

This reminds me to get my TED machines out and check if they are still working. :) I have this SaRuMan upgrade in my C16 and it works a treat, and you don't even need functioning RAM on the main board (thank goodness).

I'd like to get a SaRuMan but doesn't seem to be in stock anywhere. Any idea what to look at next for a kernal that tests good in my plus/4 that tests bad in my c16? Something goofing up the checksum calc perhaps?

@@JamiesHackShack From what I'm reading on Lemon 64 the kernals in the 16 and +4 (and 116) are the same, and like you found there are different part numbers for the PAL and NTSC versions. Does the 16's kernal test bad in the +4? It's a pain in the rear to swap chips but that might help narrow things down...
I think (but I'm not sure) I got my 64K module right from the creator, before they were widely distributed. Hopefully one of the online distributors will get some back in stock!

@@LeftoverBeefcake yeah like I in the video the separate one I bought was a pal. It is not in play after I realized it. I have a kernal rom that started in the plus/4 that tests good in the plus/4 but fails in the 16. The original one that fails the test in the 16 also fails in the plus/4.

@@JamiesHackShack Hmm... wish I had gotten that Diag cart so I can see what it does on my machines here.. :(
The original chip that fails the diag in both machines is definitely suspicious, the chip might be marginal but is still able to function since it looks like it loaded stuff from your SD2IEC (and off the cartridge). But the ROM that works in the +4 but fails in the 16? Yeah I'm thinking the 16 must still have an issue in that case. But that's going by the forum post that is saying the kernal is the same in all the TED machines. It could be a problem with the socket, or worse, somewhere along the line there's a busted trace or corrosion on some other chip or socket. All I can say for certain is that the traces on the C16's board seem to be pretty fragile since I tried do a different 64K mod and ripped several trying to get the RAM out. :(

@@LeftoverBeefcake Yow on your traces! Bummer! These Ted machines can be fickle. Still dig em though!

Wasn't it easier to borrow Steven's C16 for a while, that would make testing the solution faster😎
