Planetary Gearbox-Fu

Get more out of your Split-Ring Compound Planetary Gear System with this one weird trick! I see the same mistake (well, oversight, maybe?) repeated of unnecessarily constraining designs or making compromises because the full set of gear combinations available are just not considered or doing weird stuff with gear radius like that had something to do with the gear ratio. This seems to stem from ...

Bro You are dead💀
YOU OPENED THE BOX, AND I CAME
I'm on my third cube. The first one didn't print well, since I was using a highly adhesive plate and it kinda stuck to it and the second went great... except I smudged too much ink around, thought I could just sand the surface a bit to make it shiny again, and found out that no... it didn't make it shiny. It worked, however. I also found the 180mm spring to be too long. So, I was curious if you feel supports are necessary for this. Bambu Studio wants to, but I look at it there's so little to support that I have to wonder.
@@PlagueDoctorInc It was designed to not require supports. The internal structures should be a fairly easy overhang angle to print and the embossed detail is too small for it to matter. I do prefer the debossed version for a paint-and-sand-back technique which leaves a pretty big area of the rotating dial unsupported, for which I use a 100% support interface to support it with a solid disk that can break away. Fiddling with the minimum support area/touching build plate settings help to limit support to just that part.
@@TroyMackay Understood. Cube three is underway then...
I'm Having a painful time trying to find a spring that fits it. where did you get yours?
Doesn't have to be exact, anywhere from 100mm to 200mm should be fine, ebay/itm/222981900101 was the one I got. Smaller diameter or even bigger if you drill out the hole a bit. Even smaller is fine if you fill in the hole, just enough for a small 'pop' when it's in the right position. You can even do without a spring, but then you've got to apply tension yourself to know when you're there. I've considered using a pair of opposing magnets for a similar effect. You could even wind your own spring from piano wire...
Hey Troy, I'm printing out your 2022 version of this project. Just wondering what the advantage of a split spinner and your alt core?
To summon masochism demons simply solve this infinitely easier version of a Rubik's cube
How do you have the two pieces joined on the core? Superglue?
The outer shell holds them in place, they don't need to be glued. Though personally I print the core and spinner in place as it is pretty easy to free up and makes it easier to assemble.
We have such sights to show you.
THE BOX, YOU OPENED İT AND I CAME
"He closed the box. . . . what do we do when he closes the box?" "We were never came"
The Box you opened it we came now you must come with us taste our pleasures ..... come now no tears they are a waste of good suffering I can help you find Frank Cotton he escaped you.........
I wonder why the Box doesn't open itself like the movies
You want Cebobites?! Cause this is how you get Cenobites!!!
Where to find such compression springs? I'm having a lot of difficulty doing so.

@TroyMackay is the thickness an issue? What did you go with? I've already printed this out, thus the questions.
@@PlagueDoctorInc I'd probably go for the thinnest option. It doesn't need to be strong, but it does need to compress to less than half its length. I actually used 0.5*5*150mm and it's not bad but a bit longer would have been better in hindsight. It doesn't have the strength to fully open the weight of the box, just kind of half way. Spring strength is probably ok at 0.5mm just needs a bit more length.
... do it.
Welp, now you gotta go to BDSM torture hell forever. That's the rules.
Onde compra?
The box you…..oh you closed it never mind I guess someone escaped us -pinhead
I printed the embossed version (as I wanted to print in gold so the high areas are shiny gold which wouldn't wear down over time, then spray paint all the depressed/internal areas dark brown) and I can NOT get enough grip on the dial to actually turn it from the outside (it spins VERY smooth if I grab the internal shaft). Have any solution to that? It seems like your non-embossed version gives you more grip so you can actually spin that dial properly?
Probably about the same. It'll probably wear in over time, but pressing both dials simultaneously might help unbind it.
Can i make this with out the spring. Im about to print the files over night but cant find the right spring anywhere. Will it work without one?
Sure, it will work - you'll just have to apply tension yourself to know when you're in the right spot to solve it. Otherwise a shorter spring from a ballpoint pen could work with a bit of an extension, or fill the hole in partially.
@@TroyMackay had to remove the extra middle bit as was a nightmare trying to reopen, also only had black pla and some silver acrylic so looks ok just not screen accurate yet. but ill get some bronze paint and dry brush it to make it better. Wanted one of these since Hellraiser 1. We have such sights to show you
I thought these puzzles were ment to be challenging to solve?
No. The puzzle is simply meant to be a means to an end. A ritual.
I CAME
You solved the box, they came. Now you must come with them and taste their pleasures.
man no matter what i do i cant get it so seperate , even used a rotory tool to try to split the crack , but seems like its fused .
Depending on the layer height, the slicer may not have left a gap - check in preview. Turning down temperature a bit can also reduce layer adhesion.
I CAME!!!
I will never get this thing open.. even with the exploded view ive had 0 luck
