This video has a lot of live video, but if you want succinct Phish, start with the Rift album. The first track is a prime example of polyrhythm. It is very hard to play and there are tempo changes. Another great example of Fishman's expertise is the track Limb by Limb. He has many expert rhythms which are hard to reproduce.

Saying the greatest 2 minutes of the grateful dead is like saying, the prettiest model on the runway or the hottest part of the sun, or the best part of the trip or the stupidest comment on X (Twitter). Its hard to quantify.

Well reading the warning took me out of the vibe. Might be fine for people who already feel the music. But for new people. The warning can just take you out of it. Because it puts you in a more critiquing state of mind, rather than listening.

Ithaca ‘77. Widely considered the best of the dead. My brother had this on tape and for literally a decade or two it never came out of the tape deck in his car. Unless that car has been crushed and destroyed for all I know it could still be right where he left it. RIP, Ithaca ‘77 tape.

Jerry will always be my favorite. Since I know a bit about his history, it's not surprising he can be so lauded for his playing, because I suspect he was so dedicated to his instrument, and renowned for practicing incessantly. Let that be a lesson for you kids!

Great video. Many have been the times when I've wondered how a human being with no extra appendages* can produce some of the stuff he does live. His brain is capable of holding two separate time signatures simultaneously. It's almost impossible and an extraordinarily rare talent. Anyone who's ever tried to maintain precision time - even 4/4 across 20 bars - knows how difficult it can be. The guys in Phish are in such command of their instruments - and I know this is going to piss someone off, but know it comes from a place of the highest esteem - but I believe they're on a level with Miles and Coltrane at their best. Masters of the highest order. Pure expression from their hearts to our ears. *I was at Halloween '94 - hardcore fans will know what I mean ;-)
