    Do you have drill stem inside the PVC pipe or does the pvc serve as the drill stem and drill case. Do you use the pvc that you are drilling with as your well casing when you are finished. What size pvc are you using. Are you willing to share information. I am in North East Texas, just above Dallas, on the Oklahoma border and am wanting to do my own water well. I worked in the oil fields, but worked as a gear box, pump jack and engine mechanic, so I know nothing of drilling. I am trying to gather as much information as I can before I attempt to get my feet wet. I machine my own parts and fabricate whatever I need since I retired 16 years ago.

      Hello Otis, this a DIY project just to see if it would work. I’m drilling with 4” casing. No drill pipe. The idea of this was to overcome weight issues of building a high dollar rig to handle and to drill till I found a good water sand. With the perforated pipe already on the pipe and sealed off from the inside with a pipe I could retrieve and test the water without pulling out of the hole. The only two things I will change next time is buy a drag bit off of eBay and I will buy a swivel. I just posted this to give people ideas on how they can buy stuff from big box stores to get a well drilling without spending $20k. I’m sure you will have lots of fun on this project.

      @@jasongrinnell1986 thank you for your reply. I watched all of your well drilling videos, very interesting. I saw one where you had a bunch of galvanized pipe sitting next to your casing, so I wasn't sure if you were using it as an inner and outer stem casing setup. Would it be ok if I checked back with you when I get started ??? This will be something that I will start in the spring. I will make the rig machine this fall and winter, except that I will be using a 90 degree worm drive gear box with a dedicated engine on a hinge for the mast to lay down. I noticed your guide for your auger motor is for a barn sliding door and your mast is made of perlins. What length pipe are you using and how long are the perlins. What are your thoughts about having this setup mounted to the back of an old pickup truck. Thanks again for taking the time to respond to my message

      Where I am located, we are right on top of the Ogalalla aquifer. My top soil is Black Clay and there is limestone at various depths. Im not sure without seeing a USGS map, but I think the aquifer sits around 600 ft deep where I am at, but I am in an area with many springs. Did you use dowsing rods to determine where you decided to drill. Where I am at is all farm land. Thanks again for taking the time to respond to my original message

    Hello Otis, I made a few other videos that explained how I was drilling the well and why I was drilling it the way o was. But in a nutshell shell I drilled the hole using 4” sch 40 pipe as my drill pipe with the screen on bottom. I show in a video how I was able to drill with the screen on the end and open it up to allow water to flow in at the completion of the well. The tricone bit was a sacrificial bit that I left on the bottom of the well. As far as inspection of the bit I would have never damaged it with my set up.

  • @OtisDavies-cv6ze
    @OtisDavies-cv6ze 4 месяца назад

    What kind of drill pipe are you using. Is it just galvanized irrigation pipe or is it regular drill stem. Why are you using a casing over the drill pipe/stem. Is your tricone sealed bearing or open bearing. How often do you remove the drill bit to clean and inspect it. My name is Otis and I am going considered doing what you are doing or have done, being that this video is older now. How much did you invest initially to do your drilling, before you made your portable rig ??? I am seeking information. I thank you in advance for all that you have provided already.

    Hi Jason,, Thanks for the well drilling setup of yours. Am in the process of doing this here where we live. Here you hit water about 15 feet down. Am starting to do mine by hand... Am going to do in steps,,, 1", 2" and 4"... Sounds like a pain,,,,but not in a big hurry to get it done,,, not sure if this makes it any easier in the long run. Like your water swivel setup.. Is the water swivel working OK,,for you,,,We had a new sump pump sitting in basement and am using this for water blaster,,,but is only 1/4 HP...Have a 1 HP ordered. This sump will completely quit pump once the drill rod get a clay plug into it,,,it will eventually work it out,,,but take a long time,,,Am hoping my heavier pump,,,will at least cut down on having to wait to clear the plugged drill rod/bit. You are set up,,,you could do a well or two,,on a weekend for some extra green stamps,,,huh?... Thanks again

    Thanks for your well drilling videos, I'm gathering items to start a similar rig as well. We should only have to go down 90'. I got a tricone bit for cheap but the cones are seized up I think, should you be able to roll them by hand a bit? Looks to have the grease port with snap ring and a 3/4 covering metal cap over the snap ring. Any idea how to get in there? Thinking of soaking it in penetrating oil then re-greasing it if possible. Was thinking of buying 1 1/4" galvanized pipe with a welded 1 1/2" to 1 1/4" reducer on the tricone bit, then reuse the 1 1/4" pipe for a submersible pump, think that pipe should drill/flow fine if we're only going to 90'?

    • @jasongrinnell1986
      @jasongrinnell1986 2 года назад

      Hey! Thanks for watching. Do not take those snap rings off. That bit it worth more to you locked up than taking those snap rings out. The reason I say this is because a tricone bit is made for weight to drill the hardest of formations. Without the weight it’s just sitting there spinning. I experienced that the lighter weight with the cones not turning drilled the fastest. I plan on using a friction bit on the next one cause I have the clutch in the motor to stall if I get too big of a bite and not break the PVC pipe. I hope this helps and good luck on your well. Remember, have fun.

    Jason, I watched all of your well drilling Videos. I have to admit, I had my doubts about your idea of using using 4" PVC as drill pipe. I have to eat some crow, your design and methods were quite brilliant. And I was quite impressed about how you worked through the problems. I want to build a drill rig using a simular design to the one you made. After watching your videos, I watched some that Rc Craford had also posted on RUclips. He also uses PVC pipe also from 2" to 20". He uses some different methods that I has never seen before. He floods the water down the outside of the pipe and installs a small air line down to the bottom on the inside of the casing. His drive pipe has a large hole in it at the top of the casing where all the rocks and cuttings come boiling out with the water and air. It is quite a mess during operation, but seems to work quite well. He helped many people in developing countries install wells using simular equipment to what you have designed, just a little twist on the methods. I know you were really shooting for a 320' well. Check out Rc Craford's channel, It might give you some ideas. I know that you inspired me to give it s try some day soon. Thanks for sharing your ideas.

      Thank you for watching. I will have to go check out his videos. I’m kind of curious as to how he was drilling his well. As to my next well I drill when the world turns to normal. I have found a drag bit that should drill lots faster and push the limits to the 4” PVC pipe. I’m confident that the PVC pipe will hold up. 320’ was my goal but anything from 230’ to 320’ would have worked just fine. I’ll just have to regroup and try again and shoot some better video.

    I'm guessing that as your drilling if you decide to stop you pull up one section of pipe so that as stuff settles it doesn't settle around the bit and lock it in. You may also stop the auger and just let the water flow at times to clear the hole out.

  • @christelting1359
    @christelting1359 3 года назад

    Maybe a small whiteboard and pen to illustrate... I think I finally got the idea though. Water has to flow through the whatever pipe your using down to the drill bit. The bit is larger than the pipe so you have room on the side and water with crud flows up the hole. You need sufficient flow or nothing will wash up. Your using a low torque "grinding bit" because your using plastic pipe. I'm assuming at this point your just gluing the plastic pipe as you go and then cutting it when you pull it back up. I'm unsure of the washup. Hard time imagining small rocks going up 300ft. Also wondering about how much water this uses. I'll see in the next few videos. Thanks for sharing.

      Lol! Yes the bit stays down there. It’s a drill till your done setup.

    what was the final depth? Here in South Carolina, at my place it was solid granite after 50 feet

      200’. I don’t have any granite here in Texas. I’m sure that would be pretty tough to drill through

      What were you drilling with? And how thick is the granite? Just curious.

      @@jasongrinnell1986 , Hi, It was a commercial well driller...hes here on you tube "wendell Lee well services"...the best here in upstate SC, they have a fine reputation on wells , drilling etc. Here in the Upstate of SC, once you get past 8-10 inches of topsoil ( if that much) its hard pan red clay..after 10 inches and you are digging a hole by hand youre using a mattock or pick....a shovel is only used to scoop it out. The driller, went through about 50 feet of that then another 25 feet or so into another strata and the next 300 foot or so was granite....400 feet total! Pretty little pile of small chips of blue rock and sand next to the hole! the casing was 6 inch diameter at 120 foot depth. I like the idea of drilling your own well and looks like youve done a remarkable job...but the granite around here would nix almost any diy equipment

    I am a bit confused from the previous video. Did you replace the bit with a home made one from flat plate? Also does the bit stay at the bottom of the casing pipe? The 3" pipe used inside the casing is just there to plug the slits in pipe and the 1" feeds the water to bit? It may be late for me so might be missing info here and there.

      Yes you are all correct.

      The homemade bit was just for experimenting. I do plan to put some sort of cutters on it and try again. The 3” allows you to test water sands for the quality of water and when you are at a good water sand there is no need to come out of the hole.

      So about how many hours did you take to drill the new well using the home made bit? I am curious to see the performance diffrence between bits. This may be as project I take on in winter when we dip to the 70s lol.

    I left my Auger under a tree for 1 year and when I wanted to use it the sun ate the gas tank up. I am watching every video you have on water well digging as my interest went to 500% now. I am currently testing soils to see what I can use to seal a pond floor and most have poor clay content. A water well would be needed to keep level up and would run on solar power as well.

      Yes. I like that idea of solar water well. There are kits on EBay that are cheap and will fix that auger right up.

    Where did you get the bushings that you mentioned at the end?

    • @jasongrinnell1986
      @jasongrinnell1986 3 года назад

      The bushing came from Lowe’s. It is connected with sewer and drain products. But as you know all these stores are limited to what they have right now. Thanks for watching.
