Well, played my first game today, solo so I could get a handle on the rules. Forgot all about Roland's character card actions, didn't use asset cards properly, kept generating ghoul encounters, and got eaten when the agenda completely advanced past stage 3. Still, it was a learning experience. Everybody always botches the hell out of their first go at a new tabletop game. This is an amazingly clear tutorial of a game which can seem quite daunting. I've watched this video before I started playing, and just now after not having played for a while, I highly recommend watching this video for anyone wanting to get into Arkham Horror. Nothing is perfect, 1 rule I was still missing, which I think was outside of the scope of this video, which is that you can assist another detective in combat for the cost of 1 resource token. There's some more rules to it though. This video still is a 5 Star video for me, a shame that I can only leave a thumbs up, it doesn't justify the quality and effort put into this video!

Not quite. The Prey keyword is called out, but it's ignored. The ghoul preys on LOWEST remaining health -- that would have sent it to Wendy if it was being placed according to its Prey type. But it correctly stays with Roland.

There’s a mistake at 09:20, it says that each investigator must spend 2 (two) clues in order to advance the first Act, this is wrong, since the rules reference manual, specifies that: "Any or all investigators may contribute any number of clues towards the total number of clues required to advance the act"
It is misleading, but not wrong. In that scenario specifically both investigators had only 2 tokens each, therefore it was required they spend an equal amount to advance.
Glad I finish this video dude, It helped me a lot cause man I was so lost when playing the game -_- , also they didnt explain the weapong item euipment etc. But i got a more understanding of the game now.
Weirdly, I think this tutorial has a couple errors. It says that to advance the agenda deck, each player must discard the requisite number of clues. The rules clearly say that the investigators, as a group, need to discard that number of clues (implying that investigators can split this 3/1 or 4/0, as opposed to each needing to discard exactly 2). Also, in the mythos phase, players draw from the encounter deck "in player order" which the rules state start with the lead investigator. The tutorial said that was Wendy, but Roland went first. It's funny how FFG makes some of these games so complicated, even they can't get it right. :D
They also incorrectly implied that the enemy spawns engaged with Roland because he meets its prey criteria, when really it engages him because he drew it.
Oh yeah. Good catch. The whole enemy thing is weird. If you draw an enemy, it comes into play engaged with you. However, if it has the Spawn keyword, then it comes into play unengaged in that location, and then engages with whoever it engages with (possibly following Prey instructions if any). If the investigator who drew the card and another investigator is at that location, and the enemy doesn't have Prey, you can choose who it engages with. I think I have that right, anyway. That's a little odd. :)
The rules reference, under "Act" says: "Any or all investigators may contribute any number of clues towards the total number of clues required to advance the act." The total can be a flat value or a number times the number of investigators, but any investigator can contribute any amount. Looks like Quizoid is correct and the video at 9:16 is wrong.
Amazing game, but I always find fantasy flight games difficult to master the rules of. Some really odd mechanics that seem unnecessary. Like the rule about attack of opportunity, that’s just another thing to remember. Why not simplify combat so it’s just activated when players attack or enemies attack. I’m with Bradley here on the rules thing. Every new rule gave me a heart attack.
I love this game but damn I hate the rulebook. I want a full playthrough not a tutorial playthrough and a reference guide. But this video is super helpful.
@@staticklingon2182 Actually rules are pretty clear except people tend to misread them :) Attacks of oppurtunity only happen when player tries to investigate or play assets/events etc... that don't have fast, fight, evade word on them. Attacks of oppurtunity are never triggered if you perform fight or evade unless the enemy has retaliate keyword however retaliate only occurs if you fail fight skill test if you win or fail evade test it doesn't apply. Skids or Agnes are great to play if you want to learn the rules quickly because they are more specialized characters. Skids mains evade and fast mechanics while Agnes mains spells and her ability of return damage per horror. Also if you play as Skids and you have switchblade and you draw crypt chill during mythos phase and fail. You can pay one resource to play switchblade and put it into discrad pile because of the fast keyword and the fact it doesn't specify when you can play it. So instead of wasting resources on physical training, discarding powerful assets or taking 2 damage you just pay one resource and discard weak switchblade card.
@@greatdude7279 I know I'm really late on this, but that example isn't entirely accurate (still if anyone sees this, I just want to make sure that the information provided is accurate). While fast events and free triggered abilities (effects that start with a lightning bolt) can be used whenever you have a player window (unless they say otherwise), fast assets can only be played during your turn. Secondly, when it comes to cards like Crypt Chill, you cannot use a fast event or free triggered ability in response to failing them, as you don't have a player window at that time (Lucky is special, since the card itself says you can play it after you fail, thus creating an exception), the only player windows during skill tests is directly before or after you commit skill cards (and both are before the chaos token is revealed). That being said, you do have player windows before drawing the chaos token in any skill test, and you should take advantage of those, as normally the only player window in the mythos phase is at the end of the phase.
@@Illdos Oh ok... so it seems we were playing the game kinda wrong. So this is kinda similar to Yorrick's graveyard ability with the baseball bat when you cannot re-equip right after you kill a monster and break it .
The ghouls are kind of on the ghoul side. Their agenda doesn't involve humanity's destruction, and they know that the coming of the Great Old Ones will spell their end as much as it will spell ours, so they're tentative allies. Unfortunately, they're also "people" with free will and comprehensible motivations, so they can fall into Outer God worship just like humans can.
- Thanks for the tip! Is there a good way to set up the scenarios for this game without spoiling all the suspense/surprise of story details such as the locations & creatures you'll encounter?
If you go to 7:00 you will see she pays the 1 resource to play the card. “Fast” means that you don’t need to pay action points, but you still have to pay the resources for that card.
13:56 Fantasy Flight Games From all the videos and rulebook regarding Prey, it would seem that this Ghoul should attach to Roland as he’s the one that drew him, regardless of if he didn’t have the lowest health. It’s my understanding that Prey only comes into effect if the Ghoul is not Engaged when it Readies and there are multiple Investigators at its location. Can anyone else confirm? Edit: Disregard this comment. About a million others already pointed it out.
Me, for 95% of the video: something's wrong. somethings not right. something's off. Me, in the last 5%: THE NARRATOR SHOULD BE TELLING A PARABLE ABOUT STANLEY.
Why didn't FFG simply start the setup with the instruction to 1. split the encounter deck (all cards with tentacle backs) into two sets: one set with cards that do not have the Gathering icons, and one set that has one of the Gathering icons. 2. Put the bigger stack (the non-gathering cards) back in the box, these cards are ignored in the setup below. 3. Split the gathering cards game box as follows (step 10-15). Step 16 is then shuffle what remains and done!
At 17:42, does that mean that if Roland had decided to just fight without the revolver in the second action, the Ghoul would not have been able to get that attack of opportunity?
9:33 I was hoping you'd actually receive clues (more story information). Instead it's just a series of skill checks to gather tokens, to reach a minimum number to advance the act deck.
Is there any place we can listen to/download the music that is used in this video and that of the Elder Sign game? I would really like to play this in the background while playing.
I can't find the exact music they used in these videos but search for "creepy piano music" or "horror piano music", there's plenty out there that would fit this genre.
@@sooner811 A couple (that have been pointed out by others): The video implies that to advance the act, each investigator needs to spend the number of clues listed, when in the game you just need to spend them as a group to reach that total (so you could have Wendy spend 4 and Roland 0, or Wendy 3 and Roland 1 and still be fine). It also implies that the Ghoul is engaged with Roland because he matches its prey instruction. Prey is only relevant for breaking ties for enemies with the hunter keyword when you have investigators that are equidistant from each other, or for when deciding who to engage after they are already in play (this is different from when the card is drawn). When an enemy with Prey is drawn, it is always engaged with the investigator that drew it (unless it has the Spawn keyword).
coz he is engaged with the ghoul and he chooses to "plays" a card (.45 automatic), instead of fighting/evading/parley/resign. Just think of Roland trying to reach for his gun while the ghoul is beating the crap out of him.
3:45 is the encounter deck a) all ecnounter cards, except the ones with the symbols shown on step 9 or b) only the encounter cards with the symbol shown on step 9? Unfortunately, after that there are no cycles available to buy apart from the very latest release "The Dream-Easters Cycle" Could you please answer a couple questions: 1) Are you going to do more printing of the earlier cycles as I was wanting to buy "The Path To Carosa" cycle next? 2) I live in Australia, so if you are printing the earlier cycles, will they be available to buy in Australian board game stores? 3) Do the cycles have to be played in the correct order? E.g. I start with Dunwich Legacy Cycle but after that the only cycle available to buy in Australia is "The Dream-Eaters Cycle". Can that be played next? 4) Is there any way of purchasing the older cycles if I live in Australia? Can the cycles be bought from Fantasy Flight games or some website and posted to Australia? Omg, my favorite card game has a tutorial from my favorite voice actor who also happens to be the narrator of one of my favorite computer games... o_O The stars align :D
Is there a better way to see if a card is “exhausted”? Seems tipping it sideways is only clear if all cards are upright, but the play area is a mess in this example. Do people have other methods to make it more clear? a token?
Some clarification please. When Wendy had the cat and had to do the agility test, why didn't she add the cats agility to her own? Making it 6-4 instead of 5-4. Shouldn't she have only taken one damage or do she not include her ally on a revelation check?
She can’t do that because she already played the card. Only cards in your hand can be committed to a skill test. (That may be possible via special mechanics that I haven’t run into yet, but not in this situation.) Since the card has been played, she can access the abilities in the cards’ text, but the skill icons are no longer relevant.
Can you play 3 players campaign with one base set and one deluxe set? I heard mixed things about it. Some say that it's possible but isn't really worth it. Is that true? (We have a pretty casual group of friends, so we never intended to build best decks or anything like that, if that matters)
I've got a problem in the first scenario(the gathering). During the barrier phase, we need 6 clues to advance but there's only 4 clues with the revealing of the 2 rooms we can go. We are a bit confused, my roomate and I. Thanks in advance!
@@Animo-XXX I've only got Dunwich complete. I know lots of campaigns add new mechanics though, but Dunwich has opened up the player cards to quite an extent. I also have the base campaign. Enemies always spawn engaged with the player who draws them, unless it has aloof/specify spawn instructions. Prey is only a tie breaker when the enemy has to pick one of the investigators (both of them being equally close to the enemy) to move towards or engage. So the video actually explained it wrong, though it would still engage Roland but solely for he is the one who draws it.

@@greatdude7279 The first paragraph alone gave me a stroke

Oh ok... so it seems we were playing the game kinda wrong. So this is kinda similar to Yorrick's graveyard ability with the baseball bat when you cannot re-equip right after you kill a monster and break it .
So excited to get my copy of the revised core game!!
13:52 But ghouls are on the good guy side in Lovecraft (see "The Dream Quest of the Unknown Kadath").
I was not prepared for the jump scare noises. Appropriate, but jeez, I don't need coffee this morning!
incredibly useful. i went from being a bit scared to try the game to feeling very confident about it.
Awesome tutorial but it is NOT spoiler free so beware if you haven't played the first scenario yet!
- Thanks for the tip! Is there a good way to set up the scenarios for this game without spoiling all the suspense/surprise of story details such as the locations & creatures you'll encounter?
Which kind of defeats its purpose. I stopped watching after seeing a couple spoilers and went back to just reading the rules.
Thank you guys for an amazing game!

This is awesome!
What the hell never seen this much work for a board game video kudos to the creator👍👌💐
This is excelt i just got this game and trying to learn it and the cards seemed so overwelming but. This video really helped.
Same here. Just received it yesterday, can't wait to dig in!!! Already thinking about expansions as I learn characters and technique.
@@EnnuiwolfLG played the tutorial campaign and gotten a couple more only thing that limits thing is finding the time. The game is great
Why are bags not included in the box?
Stanley what have you done to my story?! There are tentacles in the cereal Stanley! Is this what you want? Are you happy now? It's ruined.
I love these intros by ffc
This was way more informative than I was expecting, good stuff
Great video I've just bought the game
At 7:17 he talks about the Lucky! Card, but doesn't she have to pay 1 resource to be able to play it? In the video it's not mentioned.
Damn i found this After The fiesta scenario and fumbling with The ruées for 1h. This is do Well Made and makes thing s so much more clear.
Is it weird if I listen to this video while trying to sleep?
kinda lol
Nah. I'm in the same boat. The game play is interesting and the voice is just so soothing...
Me, for 95% of the video: something's wrong. somethings not right. something's off.
Me, in the last 5%: THE NARRATOR SHOULD BE TELLING A PARABLE ABOUT STANLEY.
Why didn't FFG simply start the setup with the instruction to
1. split the encounter deck (all cards with tentacle backs) into two sets: one set with cards that do not have the Gathering icons, and one set that has one of the Gathering icons.
Yes.
Wow, this was really well made.
9:33 I was hoping you'd actually receive clues (more story information). Instead it's just a series of skill checks to gather tokens, to reach a minimum number to advance the act deck.
Advancing the act deck advances the story.
Really Good! Thank you for making This!
I really wish they would create amazing tutorials for all their products 😎
They used to but they take down the ones for games that get discontinued
Doesn’t it cost Wendy 2 resource tokens to play the event card Elusive at 14:49?
Is there any place we can listen to/download the music that is used in this video and that of the Elder Sign game? I would really like to play this in the background while playing.
I can't find the exact music they used in these videos but search for "creepy piano music" or "horror piano music", there's plenty out there that would fit this genre.
This sounds like music they have in Mansions of Madness app.
My copy of this is coming wendsday I can't wait lol
Great Tutorial (although there are some small mistakes) , very well design video. Thanks!
What mistakes did you spot?
Excellent tutorial. Thank you!!
Superb tutorial video
about damn time.
Still dont understand 18:00 Why does the enemy interupt? Roland didnt finish his 3. action?
coz he is engaged with the ghoul and he chooses to "plays" a card (.45 automatic), instead of fighting/evading/parley/resign.
Just think of Roland trying to reach for his gun while the ghoul is beating the crap out of him.
3:45 is the encounter deck
a) all ecnounter cards, except the ones with the symbols shown on step 9
or b) only the encounter cards with the symbol shown on step 9?
The text on step 16 indicates a), but it is unclear.
10:10 my SO went totally ape that there was 1 shroud in the hallway. Why??@!?
So what is the meaning of the 1 shroud on the hallway?
(i guess that every location has a shroud value, and the minimal shroud value is 1, but it is never written anywhere)
I imagine there are cards you can have in your deck that add clues to your current location, which is why the hallway would have a Shroud value.
Are Arkham Horror and Arkham Horror: The Card Game two totally different games?
Thanks for the info.
Hello. Yes they are. Arkham Horror is a board game, while the Arkham Horror The Card Game is an LCG model card game. Here are a few links to the pages so you can review.

Would be so nice to have this tutorial subtitled in spanish or other languages so I can send this video to new people who Im going to play with, that way, I wouldnt need to explain so many things in the first game we do. This game has a lot of things to explain and it would help so much to have it subtitled
i just want to learn to play this game to impress this guy i'm talking to lol... wish me luck!
best of luck! It's a great game, so hopefully you enjoy it as well!
Excellent game. The rules and play flow are not hard or difficult at all to understand.
I got to play this recently, next chance i get is in March
just got the game a few days ago so this was pretty good timing for me
I am a first time buyer and player of your awesome game Arkham Horror The Card Game and have just purchased the complete Dunwich Legacy Cycle (Deluxe box with the 6 Mythos packs). Unfortunately, after that there are no cycles available to buy apart from the very latest release "The Dream-Easters Cycle"
Could you please answer a couple questions:
1) Are you going to do more printing of the earlier cycles as I was wanting to buy "The Path To Carosa" cycle next?
2) I live in Australia, so if you are printing the earlier cycles, will they be available to buy in Australian board game stores?
3) Do the cycles have to be played in the correct order? E.g. I start with Dunwich Legacy Cycle but after that the only cycle available to buy in Australia is "The Dream-Eaters Cycle". Can that be played next?
4) Is there any way of purchasing the older cycles if I live in Australia? Can the cycles be bought from Fantasy Flight games or some website and posted to Australia?
Thank you so much for your help!
Omg, my favorite card game has a tutorial from my favorite voice actor who also happens to be the narrator of one of my favorite computer games... o_O
The stars align :D
where can we purchase that back drop ? So cool!
I am really curious, why there is no trailer or tutorial for twilight imperium
Legends say that game was so complicated that Creator couldn't figure out how to play it himself too.
Aren't RUclips videos limited to ten hours in length?
@@c.cooper2877 youtubers did how to play TI4 in 30-50 minutes, in comparison official FF tutorial of Game of Thrones is 25 minutes :)
Is there a better way to see if a card is “exhausted”? Seems tipping it sideways is only clear if all cards are upright, but the play area is a mess in this example. Do people have other methods to make it more clear? a token?
I use fantasy flight’s gaming tokens
@@mattceloria9535 I had to google them - those look fantastic. I’m getting a set in each color. Thanks for the tip.
Awesome job, you are the Tom Brady of Boardgames.
I feel so deflated after reading that comment.
Is that all I have to do to set the game up? LOL, what a freaking nightmare.
What took you so long?
probably not to show any spoilers
Uhmmm e super animations?
Wow, Wendy really just sacrificed her cat like that
Take the damage, you coward! You can kill my beat cop, but the cat must live!
Remember that the icons on the setup cards tell you to place a certain number of clues *per player* so you are probably not putting enough clues out.
Steel Beard Thanks I was mistaken the entire time! That's what I get for trying this game at midnight when I'm tired
11:30 you of course mean SEMI-automatic
it's been modded.
I need for solo playing... on how to start playing solo, from zero.
Who is the narrator for the video? I would love to know if he does other voice work like audio books.
Awesome video but I'm still lost. Mind you, it's still in the box but Jesus it's a lot to account for. I hope everything is somewhat organized preplay
I'm not lost anymore! Lmao
@@floodkevin4716Glad to hear :) What minimum number of expansions / mythos packs would you say the game opens up for maximum replayability?
@@Animo-XXX I've only got Dunwich complete. I know lots of campaigns add new mechanics though, but Dunwich has opened up the player cards to quite an extent. I also have the base campaign. I'm leaning towards more board gaming though I think. The deck building turns me off. I'm stuck on Arkham 3rd edition!
14:02 Why is Roland taking this ennemy if the card states "lowest remaining health" ? Wendy has less health than Roland right?
Enemies always spawn engaged with the player who draws them, unless it has aloof/specify spawn instructions. Prey is only a tie breaker when the enemy has to pick one of the investigators (both of them being equally close to the enemy) to move towards or engage.
So the video actually explained it wrong, though it would still engage Roland but solely for he is the one who draws it.
After watching the video, Stanley decided to purchase a copy of the game.
I get the idea of meeting the requirements in order to obtain enough clues, but I just wish such clues had more significance in the manner you're to proceed, instead of merely continuing the plot.. Like a puzzle of a storyline.
Other campaigns do a lot more with act flips than just "flavor text and move on"
