Calgary's aviation history is marked by early pioneering flights significant contributions during wartime and robust post-war growth. The city's aviation sector continues to thrive driven by its strategic economic importance and ongoing innovations in air travel and transportation. From the early days of airmail flights to the bustling operations of Calgary International Airport, Calgary remains a key player in Canada’s aviation landscape.
Calgary's aviation history traces back to the early 1910s. The first documented flight in Calgary occurred on July 12, 1914 when aviator Ernest C. Hoy flew a Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny" aircraft from Calgary to Edmonton, marking the first airmail delivery in Western Canada.
Post-war, McCall Field saw rapid expansion. By the 1950s, Calgary was becoming an important commercial aviation hub. Trans-Canada Air Lines (later Air Canada) began regular flights connecting Calgary with major cities across Canada and the United States.
