Jingo is my favorite Pratchett book for the sheer amount of things he touches on and points out the absurdity of. Also there is no way anyone could foresee the comedic trio of Nobby, Colon, and Vetinari. The Minaret scene is honestly one of the funniest things I've ever read.
I can promise you that ALL the Discworld books get better after Eric (which is where you abandoned the chronological reading according to THE SPREADSHEET). I know that you like City Watch books but what I found out, especially in the second part of the series, is that the world in Discworld is progressing. It's not static. And in the later books there're more and more small or not so small references to the events that happened in earlier books (and not necessarily in the same sub-series) and it's so gratifying when you catch one of them. Anyvay 😉 I look forward to your next Discworld vlog and I can't wait for you to read the next Witches novel(s).

Wood bees (carpenter bees) can drill holes into wooden areas around your home, such as inside roof eaves or wooden siding.
But the good news?
Wood bees are easily deterred by spraying almond oil or citrus oil around exposed wood. You shouldn’t spray them with harsh chemicals or insecticides because they’re vital pollinators.
Wood bees prefer unpainted, weathered wood, especially softer varieties such as cedar, redwood, pine, and cypress. Painted or pressure-treated wood is much less appealing to carpenter bees.
Only female wood bees can sting. Male wood bees cannot. Stingers are modified egg-laying organs, so only female bees have them.
With that in mind, female wood bees spend most of their time collecting food and tending to their baby bees. In other words, most people rarely encounter female wood bees because they’re busy nesting.
But male wood bees, on the other hand?
Those are the type of carpenter bees that most people see. The males typically hover outside the nest to patrol the area. Despite being unable to sting, the male wood bees will “put on a show” and buzz around potential intruders to scare them off.

Oh no, you dropped publication order reading right at the point where 1. the series shows its best (Witches Abroad, Small Gods, Reaper Man) and 2. lots of the longtime characters get introduced (Moving Pictures). That being said, the next two Watch books are among my favorites, so I'm sure you'll love them!

The quote about ordinary people is one I, sadly, often have reason ro remember. Pratchett always cuts straight to the heart of things.
The 1st 30 seconds of this video is everything I needed to lift my spirits today. Got some very sad news that was sure to put me in sleep-away-the-sadness mode. But I don’t want to sleep away my evening and it won’t make me feel better: so I’ll read. But before I do, on the way home I listen to the chatty segments podcast style for my drive home to get me in a bookish frame of mind and excited to read.

Oh, I forgot to say that a very important character(s) for Nigh Watch are introduced in Thief of Time (also a brilliant book). So after Fifth Elephant, I would recommend that as the next one.

I am so glad you love Discworld as well as you do. Seeing you read them for the first time reminds me why I had been so thoroughly marinated by Discworld all those years.

I stepped on a wood bee nest once in our overgrown 'garden' out back. Fastest I've ever run. They take out little squares of skin.
Wood/carpenter bees generally aren't gonna nest in/on the ground though, unless you stepped on a large enough chunk of wood that they had decided to drill into. More likely it was some species of ground dwelling wasp, and some of those suckers are gonna be real mean if someone busts into their nest so running was def the right call!
@@amberdawn5372 It was wood bees. They were green. This was up in Michigan. It was overgrown former garden. They bit instead of stung.
I have a fear of bees and wasps. It was self induced, but it hasn't changed anything. I did learn to confront it though
If you'd like to read a memoir about Ravensbrück and Kaninchen (rabbits), I can't recommend "And I Am Afraid of my Dreams" by Wanda Półtawska enough. It's horrific, but hopeful and the author is definiately one of the strongest women I've heard about. I've read this book a few years ago, but it still often comes back to my mind and inspires me

That sucks though. I think they're harmless, but that does not help me bee okay with them flying around.
I can't wait to get into Pratchett. He's been on my TBR for a bit, but it's a mountain to climb.

Jingo was the first Discworld i read and i was way too young to understand most of it but it was my gateway into grownup books so will always be special for me ~ glad you had such a good time with it!

The bees are tuning into your book review! There's a buzz around town about it.
One of my favourite scenes in all of Discworld happens at the end of Jingo. With Vimes and Carrot and Vetinari sitting in Vetinari's office and it's just one of those scenes where The Thing is not said but The Thing is understood and everyone knows that everyone else understands it and no one needs to say it because to say it would be to break it. A lot of my favourite scenes have Carrot Ironfoundersson in them, tbh. I love the way he says things and people take them one way but he means them another, or does he?
Pratchett's understanding of language and nuance and human nature was second to none. He could write a single page conversation that worked on three different levels, both in the book and outside of the book and have it leave you crying with laughter only to think about it more and feel profoundly moved, only to think about it more and laugh again at another level of pun that you hadn't noticed the first time around.

I actually love historical fiction and currently reading When Elephants Dance by Tess Uriza Holthe. It's WWII as well, but it's about what is going in the Philippines. I just finished Rebecca's Tale by Sally Beauman, a sequel to Rebecca.
I remember liking Lilac Girls a few years ago. My mom and sister are big historical fiction readers and they passed it along. I am over that phase in my reading and prefer to stay away from wartime stories.
I know you just said you'd prefer a non-fiction, and that it'll be hard to read, but I read Ken Liu's The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories earlier this year and there's a beautiful and disturbing story about Unit 731 and the importance of not forgetting these types of stories, and it absolutely tore me apart. The entire book is amazing, this story is The Man Who Ended History: A Documentary.

The Fifth Elephant is my favourite of the Watch series so far (I've yet to read Thud! and Snuff), and easily in my top 5 Discworld books, having read almost all of them now.
Fifth Elephant is top tier. Top 3 Watch books for me with Night Watch and Men at Arms. ♥
@reen6057 the Watch books are all great so far! Jingo is maybe my least favourite, but it also has some amazing moments, in particular with Carrot and with Vetinari + Colon + Nobby 👌

nice. i'm happy you liked jingo because, imo, it's not one of the better night watch books! imo, they're ALL better from here on out and almost every one of them by a considerable amount. there's so much good that it's REALLY hard to rate them relative to one another. althought THUD! still is my personal favorite.

City Watch was so good. I went back and started chronological after finishing them and didn't get very far. I need to try to get back in though.
I like to think the absolute best way to read discworld is however you choose. My Dad gave me two when I was a teen and I tried one, didn’t like it, tried the other and loved it. (It was The Truth if you want to know) from there I just grabbed one I thought sounded interesting. There are so many stories Pratchett wrote some are bound to not quite fit. But others definitely will!
If those are for sure wood/carpenter bees you can just ignore their posturing. The males are the ones that get territorial and like to dart at things but they don't have stingers. The ladies with the stingers are way more chill. They won't be doing any of those threat displays and aren't gonna sting unless seriously provoked, just don't trap or handle her and she won't care enough about you to sting either.

Jingo is one of my favorite Discworld books, even allowing for the fact that whichever one I read last feels like a favorite. Also, as a fellow not-much-of-a historical fiction reader, I've enjoyed Margaret George and Mary Renault. Books that bring more distant time periods to life. I couldn't be less interested in WW2 fiction, even though I'm sure I'm doing it a disservice.
Jingo is my second favourite City Watch book [first favourite goes to Feet of Clay]. I was thinking of checking out Mary Renault sometime. Where would you suggest to start?
@@kurathchibicrystalkitty5146 Feet of Clay is one of the first books I'd save from a burning building.😂 I've only read The Praise Singer and Fire from Heaven so far, about Simonides and Alexander the Great, respectively, and they both have their pros and cons. Fire from Heaven is probably a bit easier to get into, but the author does let Alexander be a Mary Sue at times. They're older books, and you can tell from the writing style and some of the scholarship they're based on.

I’m also reading Lilac Girls, I agree that at least so far (I’m still in part one) the switch of characters is super abrupt and I really don’t understand Caroline as a character and how she connects. I do kind of agree I wish it was non-fiction. I was wondering why you had chosen this one as an option on the poll for this month, laughing that your neighbor aggressively chased you down to give you the book!

How do you feel about non-fiction which is a long form interview/conversation? Book "Shielding the Flame", is a quite unique conversation between the survivor of the War (Marek Edelman) and a writer Hanna Krall. Not exactly about Ravensbruck, but might be interesting for you.

It's good to read books outside your comfort zone occassionally. War might be the ultimate absurdity that humans choose to engage in.

So glad you skipped ahead. Going through in publication order can be a slog as you encounter some of the ‘less good’ ones. But people in the comments section are generally recommending the better ones (I’m talking critically acclaimed as well as my personal preference!).
I’m very excited at you moving on to Fifth Elephant and, most especially, Nightwatch - possibly his very best. You’ll find the tone has changed a bit - a more mature writer now. Maybe more plot driven, but also deeper characters, and always needle sharp commentary).
But then you have to jump back to earlier stuff again. You can’t go without Small Gods!
Read at your own paces. Many people tear through them, but they don’t have to give considered reviews at the end which I can see might bog you down. I’d rather you read slower and enjoy them than find it a chore.
I can't imagine reading Night Watch before Thief of Time, though. Nearest thing to a two parter next to the first two books.
