Fun fact: When Mitsuha starts writing her name on Taki's hands, she isn't actually writing the character for her name, she is also trying to write "I love you" just like Taki did.
That's right! If you watch Mitsuha write her name while in Taki's body at the beginning of the movie you can see that she writes "Mitsuha" in hiragana characters: みつは which starts with a curve stroke at 26 : 50 into the movie. And when we see what Taki wrote at the end of the movie on her hand, he writes "I love you" as: すきだ which starts with a straight line stroke. Note that if you are looking for this in the movie, remember that when Taki wrote "I love you", the fingers of Mitsuha's hand were pointing at him, so from his perspective, her wrist was "up" and the fingers were "down". And since hiragana characters are written top to bottom, you have to tilt your head to the right to see these characters right-side up in the movie.
I always thought the 'Curse' prevent them from writing their name. So basically it tricked them to thinking that they did, but it actually translated to their true feelings to each other in real world. And thus love traverse curse/time/death/apocalypse/name etc theme. It just make more sense tbh.
@@FP19487 That's pretty close. Everything else got erased not because of a curse but because that's just how time works. But the "I love you." stayed. So love was able to transcend time.
Note that Makoto Shinkai is notorious for his location scouting. If you see two characters meet in a back alley somewhere (in Tokyo or some other real city), you can be damned sure that that exact back alley, down to the number of power lines overhead and the selection of items in the vending machine, really exists, and really is on the path from whatever A to whatever B the two characters are going.
we've just been to japan with the intent of seeing some locations they used for films, if they are close to where we are. we were able to see suga shrine and the cafe salon the de rond in the national art center in roppongi and have pictures. the details makoto shinkai captured and used on the film is amazing tho, you might as well have been there.
I went to Tokyo last Spring and made sure to stop by the staircase where the final scene takes place. There were a bunch of people trying to take photos reenacting the final shot of the movie.
It really adds a sense of reality, of wonder, which is funny since it's such a mundane thing. I watched Suzume recently, which is sort of his take on a road movie, and the feeling of just *being there* in all of the locations was so powerful

Your Name is one of my all-time favorite films. Part of the reason why it works so well is because how well it manages to use the medium of animation to elevate its story. So much so that I genuinely can't see this narrative if it was in any other medium. I genuinely can't see this story work without the breathtaking animation and the outstanding soundtrack. It's an absolute testament to the power of cinema. This is why whenever someone brings up the A Silent Voice VS Your Name debate, my go to answer is that while ASV has stronger plot, Your Name is a much better film.
Both have great plots, with very simple characters to facilitate those plots. However, because Silent Voice is more character driven than plot, it ends up losing what the plot focused Your Name has. Both still excellent movies.

You really need to have seen one of the director's previous films, 5cm/s, to appreciate the ending of this fully. Them just walking past each other without recognition was put there to make the audience go "NOT AGAIN SHINKAI!" so them finally recognizing each other would hit that much harder. And it did, I cried right on cue.
Shinkai is a master in emotions. Weathering with you and Suzume this year wear on par with Your Name. They remind me a lot to A Silent Voice which is sublime too.
This film had me SOBBING by the end of it. Rarely has a film moved me on such a foundationally emotional level. I was deeply moved by the ending because of how emotionally invested I was in every aspect of the film's execution. In my opinion, it's an absolute cinematic masterpiece! I'm so glad that you loved this movie and are talking about it on your channel. I've been sharing it with everyone I know too!
Back in 2016, Your Name changed my life forever. It reminded me that I was alive, encouraged me to take chances, and made me appreciate the bonds I had. Because of Makoto Shinkai I started to embrace living life to my fullest. But on a more surface level, it also taught me to shoot my shot. When you encounter someone that pulls on soul, take the shot. It could be the red string/thread of fate linking you together across space and time.
@@elcee8 I'm so glad that you felt that way! Makoto Shinkai's new movie recently started streaming on Netflix, too, if you haven't seen that one already.
Your Name is a masterpiece. There’s not much I can say about it that both you and other commenters more articulate than me aren’t also saying. The whole movie looks so good and I especially love the music in it and the feelings the movie makes me feel. The first time I saw it I caught the news report on the tv in the beginning talking about a comet and tucked that away as something that’d be important later on. Didn’t see the second half reveal coming though. 😂 I love how near the end of the movie you can see Mitsuha’s friends in the background planning their wedding. That was cute. If you want another Romantic Drama with a sci-fi element I recommend the movie ‘About Time’ (live action movie, not an anime). Its one of my favourite movies. I watched it last night for the first time in about 5 years and the ending still makes me bawl. 😂 ‘Wolf Children’ is one of my favourite anime movie’s and as a mother, one you’ll definitely love Merphy.
Just an FYI, someone in the reddit thread on this movie said that what Mitsuha started to write was not here own name but I Love You as well. Which is really sweet. Also if you paid attention, the iPhone models of each character should have hinted different timelines among other things!
I love this movie so much! Whenever someone asks me for recommendations, this is usually the first or second one I say. Makoto Shinkai is a master of his craft! This is the first in what people have dubbed his natural disaster trilogy, romances set around a natural disaster with magical realism. I highly recommend the other two _Weathering With You_ and _Suzume,_ although this is certainly the best of the three. I loved the time-travel twist of this movie. The scene at twilight on top of the crater ridge never fails to make me cry. Taki and Mitsuha are wonderful characters who feel real and outside the mold of what a lot of romantic, high school-aged kids are like. God, I love this movie so much!
I think one of the things that makes Your Name hit so hard for pretty much everyone who watches it, it's that it manages to perfectly capture the feeling of what a "soulmate" connection must feel like. I'm not sure I actually believe in soulmates, but if there really is such a thing then this movie conveys exactly what that indescribable feeling must be
Your reaction regarding the big twist was perfect. Since this is the very point of the movie: how important and precious are the things and people we take for granted, that we enjoy but we often find annoying. And how we only realize that once they are gone. Right then we lost Mitsuha just like Taki did. And just like him we never realized how much we cared about her Perfect movie
It's so funny that you mention that they could just have passed by each other without talking at the end because that's essentially exactly how a previous movie from Makoto Shinkai ended... so the ending scene with them almost meeting and then getting blueballed that they might walk away from each other AGAIN, IN ANOTHER MOVIE, was deeply triggering to many Shinkai fans, lmao. I'm just glad he decided to give us a happy ending for once since many other movies I've seen from him before Your Name are way more realistic, bleak or rather melancholic and overall bittersweet in tone.
I procrastinated on watching this for over 5 years. Something about the reviews I had watched built up enough anticipation for it that it never felt like the right time to watch it. I finally watched it about 2 months before Yumi and the Nightmare Painter came out. It really changed my experience of that book, since it felt like Hoid was telling the story to someone who has watched this movie.
Something else I love about Shinkai films is that they all take place in the same world to the point that you will casually see characters and references to his other stories in each film and it’s not like a nod at the audience type cameo they actually just exist together and the animation is always top tier
Such a great movie that even draws in non anime watchers. Get chills every time I watch it and enjoy seeing people’s reactions the first time. Merphy sums it up so well.
This is easily one of my all time favorite anime films. I went to see this with a friend totally blind as to what it was about and was such an amazing experience. This has made me more emotional than any other media I can recall. If I may recommend another favorite anime film it would be Summer Wars.
Merphy: explains perfectly how the lighting emphasises/reinforces the characters' emotional states. Also Merphy: I'm sure someone who actually knows about movies can explain this.
There's indeed a manga adaptation that came after the movie, however more notably there is a novel side story that's definitely worth reading! It shows some events and backstory from the perspective of the side characters and it honestly does a great job at fleshing them out a bit more. It's called Your Name: Earthbound I believe
Such a wonderful movie. I actually heard about it first because I follow the band, RADWIMPS, who did the score. I feel like they absolutely knocked it out of the park for this one. When the song, Sparkle, starts to play during the climax of the film it sends chills down my spine. Also while you spoke I noticed a parallel between this and Yuma I hadn’t noticed before - the choice to end on the positive, hopeful note.
This is in fact a book! Written by shinkai the director,no idea if it was published in English but have to imagine it was made as a proof of concept because it predates the movie (I think, been a while) Now try to watch the silent voice movie it's exceptional and a kinda companion piece to this one because they were released close to each other
Hi! There is a video analysing the soundtrack that made this movie more of a masterpiece for me. Its made by Jaime Altozano and its called "La mejor banda sonora de anime". He is from spain but the video has english captions. Im sure you noticed some weird patterns while watching the movie, he manages to clarify what it was.
One criticism I've heard of this movie is that their relationship is rushed, that them getting together didn't make sense because they barely know each other - and, I don't get it. Like, have you SEEN the movie?! Your Name is a masterpiece. I cried when she opened her hands. 'Sparkle' playing in the background was perfect.
I actually think the only criticism should be the time travel twist. I realized as I was watching this video , that part doesn't really make sense. They both should have seen the year in school at the very least or in the phone or something
I wouldn’t say them getting together doesn’t make sense but their relationship definitively felt rushed. They bearlly talk to eachother in a friendly manner through the hole movie and the bulk of their interactions is glossed over in a music videos in the middle of the movie. There is a relatinship built there but as a viewer I couldn’t invest myself because I didn’t see it developing.
if you want to try an anime series, I highly recommend A Place Further Than The Universe - my favorite anime of all time. It's a relatively short series about 4 girls who go on a trip to Antarctica together and get to know each other along the way. The 4 core characters are all extremely well developed, and the best part of the show is the bond they have with each other.
Makoto Shinkai's "Your Name" is an anime original anime, but it does have a manga adaptation. also fun fact, apparently according to Shinkai, this version of Your Name is an incomplete version of the story compared to what he had in mind. aslo, the long distance relationship part of the story comes from his own life experiences, as he and his wife were in quite the long distance relationship before getting married. also also, if you can, you should try and somehow find a way to watch it in a cinema, or in a cimilar setup, like a home cinema, since the movie's full strength comes out in s cinema
Your Name is a gorgeous film. One of my favorite things about it is how it really takes its time; the slow pacing gives the audience time to really get a feel for the two main settings and how the characters' daily routines fit into them; showing people doing mundane things. Another film that does something similar and also has a really beautiful story is Wolf Children. I highly recommend it if you enjoyed this one.
In Makoto Shinkai movies the immersion is godly. His movies are just perfect from an immersive perspective. If you want to watch how beautiful it is...Search 72 seasons of Makoto Shinkai just exploring his world.(But it depends on if you want to watch it or not...there are no story spoilers but visually of course there are nature and background scenes from other movies) Your Name is like a gateway to anime movies for many people, so this has left a long-lasting impact on almost every anime fan. This was so much fun watching your love for it in the new year. Happy New Year Mephy from India❤❤
I have seen this movie few years ago, and it is amongst my favourite, and I watch lots and lots of them. I hope you give Studio Ghibli movies a chance even if they are not related to mangas.
I still listen to the OST of this film from time to time even though I watched it years ago, also I watch the orchestra concert in youtube it was so good!. The visuals in this film has a certain awe to it that it feels like you're looking at a painting.

I haven't seen this movie since watching it in theatre when it came out. It was so beautiful and I couldn't even handle watching it again cos it affected me so much. This is truly a masterpiece. And we haven't even go about the soundtrack, especially the one that started at the end of the twilight scene and run all through the meteor shower, until it finally hits. Such powerful soundtrack. On that note, the destruction scene caused by the meteor...one of the best disaster scene ever.

And just like him we never realized how much we cared about her
Perfect movie
It's so funny that you mention that they could just have passed by each other without talking at the end because that's essentially exactly how a previous movie from Makoto Shinkai ended... so the ending scene with them almost meeting and then getting blueballed that they might walk away from each other AGAIN, IN ANOTHER MOVIE, was deeply triggering to many Shinkai fans, lmao. I'm just glad he decided to give us a happy ending for once since many other movies I've seen from him before Your Name are way more realistic, bleak or rather melancholic and overall bittersweet in tone.
I think this was the first movie that ever jerked a tear out of this stone like heart of mine.
Also, I had been drinking a little, so there's that...
That is the nicest thing anyone has said about my name. Thank you merph!
The moment Sparkle played in the movie up to the ending was the most enthralling experience ever.
It was beautiful, emotional and lovely story. I thoroughly enjoyed the music as well.
I'm crying over the story just via your summary 😭 the gut punches of the writing on the hand, the ending of asking the name is so moving
Fun fact about this (and other Makoto Shinkai movies), EVERY frame is hand drawn. Absolutely insane.
Merphy: explains perfectly how the lighting emphasises/reinforces the characters' emotional states.
Also Merphy: I'm sure someone who actually knows about movies can explain this.
Thank you for tuning in, my friend!

Suzume and Weathering with you are two things that should be on your list. Both masterpieces
Garden of Words is a favourite of mine, quite short and it shares the same universe as Your Name.😊

Thank you for tuning in, my friend!

This is in fact a book! Written by shinkai the director,no idea if it was published in English but have to imagine it was made as a proof of concept because it predates the movie (I think, been a while)
Now try to watch the silent voice movie it's exceptional and a kinda companion piece to this one because they were released close to each other
Taki and mitsuha have a cameo in weathering with you!
You should watch that next! 😊
if you want to try an anime series, I highly recommend A Place Further Than The Universe - my favorite anime of all time. It's a relatively short series about 4 girls who go on a trip to Antarctica together and get to know each other along the way. The 4 core characters are all extremely well developed, and the best part of the show is the bond they have with each other.
This is also my fave anime of all time. Really loved this and it's just visually stunning as well as brilliant story wise.
I highly recommend listening to the Kimi no Na wa soundtrack while reading One Piece, it fits incredibly well.
If you want to watch how beautiful it is...Search 72 seasons of Makoto Shinkai just exploring his world.(But it depends on if you want to watch it or not...there are no story spoilers but visually of course there are nature and background scenes from other movies)
Your Name is like a gateway to anime movies for many people, so this has left a long-lasting impact on almost every anime fan.
I know Merphy's gonna love "Tomorrow Me, Yesterday You" dont you think so guys?
Especially when she said, "when their paths are pre-destined to meet but they are also already severed"
Watched this because of your comment. Thank you. I just bawled my eyes out.
@@thiswasem omg really? Im glad my random comment made you check out that movie, im already crying just thinking about that again, especially the second part and ending 😭😭😭
@@universanity9295 now this movie will play in my head and probably mess me up for a month or so 😭. Also reminded me of the fanfic I read. It's called "Flowers from 1970" perhaps you know this? I didn't also expect it to have good writing considering it's a Wattpad fanfic. Just one google search and it will pop up. Hopefully you'll/ have read it as well. Glad we bonded by the trauma of such stories. So thank you for making me cry 😭
Never heard of it. I will have to add it to my watch list.
@@CFord256 check it out! Its an awesome movie with a very unique premise/plot!
That's one of the reasons why Yumi and the nightmare painter was my favourite book from last year. It reminded me so much of this movie and just anime vibes in general. Absolutely loved it.
Are you planning to watch or have you already watched 'Weathering with You', by the same director?
I think you'll enjoy it
Saw this for the first time myself a few days ago. A day later, it was still sinking in, and I'm still finding dimensions (plot, relationships, the soft magic system, etc.) to it I had originally missed that I think will make it rewatchable.
Your reaction and emotions to this movie is exactly how I feel, it’s one of the movies I will continue to rewatch for a long time, it doesn’t lose its magic
I remember watching this, being absolutely stunned, going to class, coming back and watching it again because it blew me away that much.
The day I first watched this movie is the day I watched it for the second and third times also.
I cried all three, It's one of my favourite movies of all times.
Wow i can only imagine how magnificent experience that would have been. Like watching it for once was impressionable enough on my heart n’ soul but three times on the same day sounds something else🥹; i love that for you!
@@surenderbeniwal8578 haha. After I watched it I had to show it to friends, which ended up being the next two watches.
@@Phillbie aww that’s great🙂🙂
One of the best movies period. Watched it several times. The plot twist was heart wrenching.
This movie is one of my all time favs and definitely my favorite animated movie - it’s so magical in how it captures that feeling of meeting someone for the first time yet it feels as if you have known each other already. And yes the animation and music were also superb
I felt like it lacked depth, but for what it was, it was amazing.
So happy you loved it !! I watched it 10 times already and each time I love it even more ❤
I haven't seen this movie since watching it in theatre when it came out. It was so beautiful and I couldn't even handle watching it again cos it affected me so much. But around two months ago, a reaction popped up on my feed that gave me an itch to watch it again. And man 7 years later felt like my first time. And since then every reaction video makes me cry and I've been finding all my friends who haven't seen it yet and requiring them to watch it HAHA
I'm so glad you loved it so much! It's honestly so hard not to, it's visually stunning and the heart of the story cuts way too deep.
Haven't seen it since it came out but I literally teared up just listening to this video. What a masterpiece.
I went from not really enjoying your name, to having watched it maybe 4 times now. I absolutely ADORED Suzume (same director)
Same, Your name i liked the animation but the story I had to watch a few times to fully get it. It used to be my favorite then suzume stole that spot after one watch at the theater
@@theartistwriter4812 exactly the same for me!
Suzume i saw on a whim, I hadnt heard of it before or its main characters thing, and that was such a genuine surprise
The music is phenomenal. The scenery is beautiful. It’s a movie I want everyone to experience
2:19 I‘m pretty sure they made a manga with at least 2 volumes after the fact, but yeah, the movie is just peak
I caught my roommates watching this years ago, and I stuck around to watch the rest of it, but never got to see the begining. I loved the movie and I could never find it again, since I never got the name. Thank God you made this video.
Your Name's the name!
I was lucky to catch this at the theater. Beautiful movie.
Your Name is my favorite movie, its crazy how everytime i rewatch it, always found something new, also music, animations, all perfect.

Gushing review. Glowing recommendation for a sci-fi/fantasy romance.
This is my favorite movie of all time, I have so many things I want to say and point out about it for you, but I’m restraining myself because I’m mostly so happy you GET IT
I am so happy that you've watched and loved Your Name Merph, I've been watching anime for a long time and this is what I call "The Best Anime"(Just Anime). The Satisfaction I felt when I first saw this in the CINEMA is incomparable. Even watching it the second and third time online the emotion still hits.
Nostalgia
One of my very favorite movies!! So glad you loved it!!
Seeing you reviewed this actually made me watch last night so banger recommendation lol
I love to see your emotions and excitement when you’re invested in something!

You've made me want to go back and watch this movie again ❤ I cried the whole way home after seeing it in theaters years ago
Watched it in a fully packed theater. A wonderful experience.
Time to watch Weathering with you
I honestly envy you for being able to put into words how amazing and beautiful this movie is, I could never do that. Every time I start talking about it or even think about it I end up crying and It's been 7 years since it was released and I've seen it countless times but still I am not able to go through it in one go. One or the other scenes always end up getting me and I have to walk it off before I can continue. Ngl this was probably the first and only 'Kimi ni na wa' review video on YT I've seen which put into words everything I always feel while watching it and I am happy that I stumbled onto it.
Thanks for making this video and inherently my day through it
OMG you just reminded me why I loved this movie so much I have to watch it again!
I definitely recommend more Makoto Shinkai movies, theyre all just so incredibly thoughtful and emotional and beautiful. 5cm per second and girl who lept through time were pretty much the your name of my generation definitely worth watching the ending of 5cm with that incredible song hits so hard for me.
Thanks for reminding me how great this movie is. Ill have to rewatch it soon
I can't believe I'm crying with Merphy describing her experience. I watched Your Name several years ago, and it is still beautiful.
Thank you for tuning in, my friend!

Try "Weathering with you". Same author and i personally preffer it. There's also a surprise that i think you'll really love. 💅
Started watching it as a slice of life movie, was blown away by the end!
YES. Your name is amazing!!
I love this movie, glad you do to! I rewatch it every so often (I don't usually go back and rewatch anything) because it is visually stunning and the music is amazing and even just listening to you talk about the story has me choked up a bit
Watching your emotional Rollercoaster to the movie almost brought me to tears remembering how this movie made me cry the first time I wanted it.
Your name is my top three favorite movies of all time. My other two are Sprited Away from Studio Ghibli, and A Knight's Tale. The creator of Your Name has other great movies too. You'll like Studio Ghibli movies if you haven't watch any yet. Your Name is just soooooo gooood. I love the sound track, the beauty of the scenes and animation, the magical story, and the heart pulling emotions as we get to understand and live with the characters.
I can’t believe I’ve finally found someone who loves A knight’s tale as much as I do
I’m not a romance person by any means, but this movie with its characterization, amazing props and effects, and incredible soundtrack can absolutely make me sob happy tears
Makoto Shinkai (writer/director) has been a favorite of mine since high school. I definitely recommend you look into his older works, especially if you enjoyed the artwork as all of his stuff has a similar style. I notice it most in the colors of the sky, the reflections and the way light shines.
My new goal for this year is to learn how to speak so passionately and so fast without stuttering 😅 srsly the way you talk on your videos is impressive.
This movie broke me. It still does whenever i hear the ost again.
Get Makoto Shinkai'd. Would love to see you watch and talk about his other films. Experiencing Your Name for the first time was such a special feeling.
I refuse to believe Merphy doesn't enjoy watching things when she's THIS GOOD at analyzing visual scene structure and direction.
I saw that movie when it came out in theaters for unlimited time, and immediately bought it on Blu-ray it's one of my favorites too
I have loved this move since I first saw it. Listening to you get so excited about it just gave me goose bumps as I remembered how much I love it. The scene on the mountain top always hits me right in the feels. And then the last scene, just instant water works. 😭😭😭😭😭😭
"What's, your name?"
I kept hearing that Yumi and the Nightmare Painter was heavily inspired by this movie when it came out, and I couldn't get through Yumi without people spontaneously chopping onions all around me, so I thought I might give this a shot... Then I saw the first minute or so of your review and how much you loved it and I had to stop the video until I had seen it myself.
I finally got around to watching it just last week, and wouldn't you know it, those darn onion choppers showed up again! The nerve of some people. x)
Anyway, this movie was brilliant. Thank you for the recommendation!
your name is one of my favorite movies!! i usually don't listen to songs in languages i don't understand because i need to understand the lyrics to really love them, but the soundtrack for this movie made me understand why people do it. i'm so happy you enjoyed it!!!!
When I watched the movie, it made me cry harder than I had for the past few years. It hit so dang hard and left me with wanting so much more. What a freaking masterpiece
Thank you for tuning in, my friend!

What a coincidence! I just watched this movie 2 days ago because it was available for free on a French TV channel website. I agree that the animation is absolutely beautiful! I kept taking screenshots. Thank you for your review, I always love watching you be so passionate and enthusiastic about what you read/watch
I stopped halfway through the video to rewatch your name because it has been so long and i had forgotten how amazing this movie was. Words cant describe the emotional rollercoaster I went through and im glad i got to relive those emotions because of your thoughts on the movie. Thanks.
