The best thing about Witch Hat Atelier is the art style. The fantasy genre in anime is dominated by the same generic JRPG town designs and architecture, whereas WHA has an actual unique art style giving it its own identity.

On that note I do like greatest magic master retirement plant light novel for that. While at first glance plot might seem generic it isn't, anyways it's era is relative thou they use magic and world budling is really deep with that one. To the point that there are whole paragraphs dedicated for describing molecular level difference in how does two powerful freezing spells work, and that just about effect of spel. Magic system goes way deeper. Like there is talk that you know there was research and it turns out magic isn't stored anywhere within body and after some research it turns out that mages do unconsciously create separate dimensions in which they store mana and the tere is whole sub polot after like 14 volumes that all of trening with mana control was partially because with enough trening they can use this control to forceful take in more mana than is their natural limit expanding this dimension, but without enough control they would be able to adjust how much mana they can take potentially killing them.

World just feels like a living breathing world. (Races, Different Languages, Cultures, traditions, World’s history, lore span thousands of year.) plus the small details like architecture and clothing.

    Atelier: Ah-tell-E-eh
    - Source: Am Frenchie
An atelier is basically a workshop. It's also translated as studio, but it's meant for the kind of studio where work gets done (like an art studio). Oh hey, look at that, a manga about drawing...
And that's probably the distinction. Atelier are usually artisanal, a place where someone can go to seek skilled craftsmen who (presumably) are at the top of their game. They're basically non-existent in North America because we don't do bespoke stuff anymore, and everyone's focused on mass production (and then deciding that doing mass production locally is too expensive because people want to be paid fairly so we outsource to China or poor nations). It's mostly a European and Asian thing now, and even there the idea of a business doing bespoke stuff in one offs or small runs is hard to maintain. Atelier are also often places people would go for apprenticeships in that craft, with the master assigning work to apprentices so they could learn that craft (another reason they're all but non-existent in North America, for some reason an apprenticeship is perceived as inferior to a school degree, despite teaching practical skills).
Anyway, I am looking forward to this anime. The manga was quite the thing to look at, but seeing it come to life will (hopefully) be a very interesting thing.

I'm so glad that, in anime, epic fantasy stories actually FEEL like epic fantasy stories. The World is colorful, rich and vibrant, the music are majestic, there's a plethora of intriguing characters, and don't get me started on the lore and worldbuilding.
Nowadays, in Western Media, there's this overgrowing habit that, if you make something fantasy, it has to be dark and edgy. And, sure, it makes sense in worlds like Game of Thrones and Dark Souls, but, every once and a while, it's good to have fantasy stories that actually make you think "I would love to visit this place"

Because if it is live action, I just know that they're going to remove a huge amount of strangeness and wonder from the setting, either for lack of budget or because anything high budget enough to actually portray what the world is like would inevitably be dumbed down to appeal to a wider audience.

The story of witch hat is so masterful, the number of themes it manages to touch on without it ever feeling like it's unfocused is amazing, they all intertwine beautifully (art, talent vs skill, education, the responsibility adults have towards children, fascism, isolationism, relationships, disabilities and ableism, classism, sexism, i'm probably forgetting a bunch)
I only started reading it two years ago and i have not stopped thinking about it ever since, it's like if fma and mob psycho 100 had a child who had alphonse mucha level art-style

they are really similar but the authors focus on different aspects of the magic
AonDor in Elantris and other cosmere books is like more like coding and figuring out how to make a complex spell that does exactly what you want in the most optimized way and also wont kill you when you use it, (though we see more of that with elantrians in other cosmere books than elantris) like making a teleport spell that wont bury you alive or drop you from the sky and for that you have to draw sigils to provide the exact distance and angle the spell will target relative to your location.
Magic Seals in witch hat atelier does have complex spells and coding like AonDor but its more about creativity and art, not the most optimized and powerful spell to use. like the spell that make comfy cloud-cushion things out of sand. we still do see some detailed and powerful magic tho.

Now I's like to see an anime adaptation of one of his books. Mistborn or Stormlight Archive. Of course Japanese only adapt other japanese media sadly... But we got the series Arcane, which was praised by everyone for its story, animation, world building, etc. and its art, although it's CGI, feels very close to anime / cartoon and is plain gorgeous. It was made by a French studio, okay with a lot of money to finance it, but still.
To me, it's proof enough that Western animation could resurrect from the disgusting dead and rotten state it is in right now. I'd say, we fire all these CalArts animation studios that suck ass, and we put the money on less known art schools that still practice traditional art (as in, traditional styles, not archaic tools of course, they still need to be productive to make money lol). And we humbly take inspiration from Japanese animation, because there is no mystery why Western animation is dead, while Japanese anime are flourishing. They simply know their stuff while we don't. And it's not because the western audience don't like animation, given how the western audience market is growing each year for japanese animation. It's proof there is not enough investment going into Western animation studios (meaning, less cartoons, and they are less ambitious), and the little there is goes mostly into 3D kids shows that are too childish for adults to enjoy too, 3D Pixar movies that are becoming soulless by the day, and crappy CalArts studios that do adult shows for "the modern audience" (Steven Universe...)

I'd say also that western animation is on a resurgence. Arcane is just one example, we also have Castlevania, Legends of Vox Machina, Survivors Reign, Dota: Dragon's Blood (A lot of people don't like it but I thought it was fun), let's also not forget the Spiderverse movies and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, both of which are fantastic despite being made for a younger audience. While I agree that shows like Bigmouth and Birchum need to be burned in a fire, I think we're seeing more and more signs that western animation is becoming less Toy Story and Family Guy and more Avatar: The Last Airbender and OG Teen Titans.

Shout out to one scene in a relatively recent chapter where a dude is using magic glasses to see through clothes, and when he's caught and pulls the "I'm improving peoples lives cause people love seeing hot women naked" card which anime STILL likes to do legitimately, the cops not just call him out on it with a BANGER line "The dream you facilitate, is a nightmare for your victims"
I absolutely love that scene is there cause I absolutely hate when people, especially anime and/or fans, try to justify sexualizing women because 'people like it' or 'they have sexy bodies so they should flaunt it' *cough*fireforce*cough*, and this chapter not only shoots that guy down majorly, but also includes a flashback about how harmful this mindset was to one of the cops in her younger years. I'm a dude so I cant relate to this situation from the woman's perspective, but I absolutely LOATHE when this angle of 'im a guy so I should always just be horny and do whatever I can to see naked women" is pushed as normal and not harmful for both sides

What I liked (ironically as a girl reading that scene) was when the creep tries to justify himself to the male cop, basically saying "as a man you should feel the same way I do, right?" The male cop retorts with "not all of us are as disgusting as you, it's not that its natural for you as a man you're just a piece of shit" [paraphrased]

The magic system kinda reminds me of Owl House. Luz drew symbols in circles as well to create spells, even combined Symbols to create new spells. However the show never went beyond that. It’s cool to see this concept as the main focus of the story. I’m definitely going to read/watch this. It seems really interesting.

Okay. Despite WHA being my favourite manga, I don't think that's right. All of the big 3 focus on different aspects of fantasy worlds. I can't say that WHA's worldbuilding is anywhere close to Meshy.

I think that Witch Hat Atelier and Dungeon Meshi are (somewhat) stronger in their fantasy elements when compared to Frieren, but I personally think that Frieren is the better story overall (ie, the former two are Best-Fantasy material, but Frieren is AOTY material imo). Unfortunately though, we live in a world where Demon Slayer or something like it will probably win both of these categories and a bunch of other categories as well. So, I just hope that these animes can win something and not end up like Vinland Saga S2 (which didn't win anything iirc).
    As for why I think Frieren is the better story;
Frieren is basically like some of the best irl fairy tales where it/they manage to convey deep and important lessons/topics without being condescending and/or in your face. It does so with subtlety and with great efficiency and care (ie, in just half-an-episode/one-manga-chapter, it covers very interesting points that you can ignore or think a little about or even delve deep into).

You should read "Magus of The Library" too. It's one of the best fantasy manga ever, with worldbuilding rivaling that of "Lord of The Rings" and "Dungeon Meshi". Its art is absolutely gorgeous, and its subject matter, books and libraries, is tackled fantastically.
