    Heya! Thanks for playing this and showing us a preview of the RQ Starter Set!
    I haven't played RQ for very long so I definitely sympathize with Troy's struggles with the system and setting... it's not easy! And one could argue the crunch feels dated compared to all the lightweight "modern" systems out there. Here are a few tips I picked up that I hope will be helpful:
    1) I quickly gave up writing out all the NPC stats like Troy does with the trolls. I just start with a blank page and write the injuries as they come in. So at the end of a combat I might only have the HP scores of the NPCs plus a few scribbles like "L Arm: 2" and "Abdomen: 0" and whatever was actually injured.
    2) Don't be afraid to wing it! If I feel like it, I narrate what the NPCs do in a way that's believable from what's happening on the players' side, and just don't track all the numbers. There are too many numbers.
    3) Get the players in the groove of rolling damage with the D20 hit location dice all together. The D20 never appears in damage rolls so there's no ambiguity. Speeds up combat a bit.
    4) When the players give their intent at the beginning of the round, I put their character on the appropriate SR right away (physical track when face-to-face, or using the Turn Order of whatever VTT I'm using online). So if a player says "I'll cast some spirit magic spell" I put their character right away at their DEX SR. If they say "I'll attack Bob" I put them down at their weapon SR right away. This avoid the tedious "ok SR 1? no? SR 2? no? SR 3? who's got SR 3?"... instead you just go to when things happen immediately.
    5) This might be more of a "table taste" thing, but for POW vs POW rolls, I tell the players to roll a D100 and tell me what their POW is. I look up the result on the Resistance Table and just tell them "oooh that was close", or "you easily overpower Bob", or "oof nope, you hit a brick wall" or similar. So that they get a vague idea of what they're up against without knowing the POW score of the NPC.
    6) It's nice that Troy was very liberal with letting players augment their rolls with Passions, Runes, and other skills. That's the spirit! RQ is a game where epic ancient heroes are motivated by their love and honour and loyalty and whatever.
    7) Last, about the adventure (SPOILERS): I obviously haven't read it yet but it sounds like it "requires" the PCs to make a mess fighting the trolls, so that the city rex can come in and arrest them. This is unfortunate especially when you've got great players like here who were actively trying to calm things down. Some of Troy's choices make more sense in light of that, and it would be unfortunate if the adventure doesn't account for a Chalana Arroy healer to pacify the situation. I'm not sure what the rest of the adventure will be about but a nasty evil GMing trick is the "damned if you do, damned if you don't" plot twist. Did the PCs mess up the market? They get punished and have to go do Mission Blah! Did the PCs do a great job of calming the trolls and saving the market? They get "rewarded" as the city rex tells them she trusts them to complete Mission Blah! :) Of course, in the second case, you can throw in some rewards to sweeten the deal (favours, land, cows, fancy items, money, whatever)
    That's it, I hope this is helpful to someone!

    Full credit to Troy for actually engaging with RuneQuest's Strike Rank system during an actual play one-shot. I've seen the game's own designers explicitly avoid it during their own RUclips demo games. As a veteran RQ player, I thought that Troy did a great job with the fiddly corners of the Strike Rank system. As I saw it written elsewhere, "It seems to me that if you took all the most immersion breaking failures of an initiative system and married them up with all the most cumbersome elements of an impulse system, what you end up with is Strike Ranks. If you look at all the ground-breaking elements of RuneQuest that were copied and influenced RPG game designs since its debut 40 years ago, the one thing you don't see is the SR system. There's a reason for that."

      @@TheGlassCannon Having accumulated scars with the Strike Rank system, you're well-positioned to compare it to the modern version found in Mythras.
      For context, the version of RuneQuest you played essentially rolled the game back to its Second Edition, which is the version of the game released around 1980. Mythras is technically Sixth Edition RuneQuest and it contains years of refinements to the combat system that make it much more fun. Moving from the version of RuneQuest you played to Mythras would be like going from AD&D to D&D 5e. A lot of Mythras will be very familiar to someone who played RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha, but made a little smoother.
      So few TTRPGs have a lineage that extends back more than forty years. Playing it will provide some great perspective on how RPGs evolve over decades. You'd get the maximum effect if you invited the same players back to play Mythras.

    What an exciting way to introduce a new game to players. I kinda wish that we got to watch the group make their characters, as that's my favorite part of the New Game, Who Dis catalogue. But the prebuilt characters are fun and interesting. It'll be interesting to see where the next chapter goes as the ending to this episode is such a fun setup going forward.

    Very cool to see this. Awesome. In D&D you might get 5 melee rounds done in the time you do 1 in RQ, but that one RQ melee round is probably way more dangerous than the five D&D rounds. Oh and Demoralise should have been a resistance roll, you always get a resist on hostile spells. And Makarios’s “herb” in Glorantha is probably called “Hazia”.

    I have to say, this was a lot of fun to listen to. I'm usually not a big fan of listening to gameplay, but Troy and all of the players made it very engaging. Well done! I'll have to check out some of your other stuff as well. And yeah, the game is very much still a throwback to its origins 40 years ago, and remains a highly-crunchy system (especially compared to a lot of the newer games anymore). Luckily, most all of the game uses just a few core mechanics (d100, levels of success,. Resistance rolls, etc.), so once you get those down, things go much smoother. And also yeah, Strike Rank has always been the first thing a lot of gamers homebrew; it's a great 'authentic' way of doing things, but it is somewhat cumbersome.

    Great Winter
    It is morning. Suddenly, the wind stops. Everyone in Sanar freezes with surprise, indecision , fear, and then horror. No wind
    blows, and the few clouds in the sky stand absolutely still and do not move or change shape. No magic works if it comes from Orlanlh, Ernalda, or their subcults. None: no feats or affinities work, no wyter speaks, no umbroli wind blows. Kolal's shamans still can use the spirits they have already bound, but when they Try to contact others, they find nothing, not even spirit·air, a very absence of presence.
    (Later, people discover that Valind's magic also does not work.) Today, and over the next few days, everyone notices that it is harder for them to do anything without being winded. This affects all the worshippers of the Orlanth and Emalda pantheon. Most people in and around Sartar, Heartland, Esrolia, and Wenelia are affected. (Even those foreign lands where Orlanth receives sacrifice, such as Prax , Ralios, Fronela, and Umathela).are touched, bUt those lands are outside the scope of this book.)
    However, this does not affect everyone equally: worshippers of foreign deities are completely unaffected. "Broyan is dead," people say. It seems true. Those with weak religious experience begin to quit their ancestral worship and embrace any new religion that offers protection. The first to benefit is the Lunar cult of the Seven Mothers.
    No contact with Orlanth or Ernalda or their subcults suceeds. Divination receives no answers except death , doom, and absence of the deities.

    There is much that I love about Chaosium's more classic version of their "Basic Role Playing" framework, but the Resistance Table is not on the list. No. May I recommend to GMs and players switching that fossil out for Call of Cthulhu, 7th ed.-style contested die-rolls instead? The only thing you'll miss is having to shift your focus from the immediate action to look at a chart and then - hey, wait a minute, you better double-check you got the right coordinate of the correct column and row on the chart. Ok? Ok... - yeah, you'll definitely 'miss' that.

      Full disclosure: I am still GMing with RQ3E, heavily retro-engineered with elements from other/later systems in the BRP family and thoroughly tested original solutions very specific to my homebrew setting (that isn't Glorantha but does retain Rune Magic, but associated with different gods with different mixtures of affinities, not Gloranthan pantheon clones - I wouldn't insult Greg with that).

      @benjaminlabarge4899 3 года назад +12

      Dated? It works well within certain systems and requires a fair bit less math and background knowledge to understand than other systems. Like think of all the stuff you need to know to translate how a 17 strength (in 5e for example) means you have a 55% chance of hitting the AC 15 orc? Dont even think about the probability in dice pool systems. D100 gives lots of room for incremental improvement/granularity and at a glance knowledge.

    • @lychg8
      @lychg8 3 года назад +12

      I've never understood why people think "older thing = bad". Just because something has been used for a while doesn't mean that it needs to be replaced. In fact, if it's been used for a long time... it probably means it's a good thing.
      Water is dated. You should just drink gatorade, it's a lot better.
      Eating food is dated, you should just inject nutrients straight into your system.
      Walking is dated, just use a segway to get to your fridge.
      As Benjamin LaBarge said, it's a lot easier to do the math in d100 Roll-under systems. "My strength is 17, so I have a +3 bonus (FLOOR((17-10)/2)). The enemy's AC is probably 15. I have +2 from proficiency because I'm below level 5. So I have to roll a 10 or higher to hit. Each point is 5%, so 10*5 = 50%. But meeting is beating, so add 5% more for a 55% chance to hit" vs "My score of 55 means I have a 55% chance of success".

    • @ElwoodShort
      @ElwoodShort 3 года назад +3

      Compared to what? The d20 system? Or are you talking about something else? The thing is with the d100 system it just works, it’s really easy to use , and really easy to gauge difficulty as a gm. Which in dnd 5e for example is a maths nightmare. I will say though, I think the savage worlds dice system [for example] is really cool, but maybe not suitable for everything.

      It’s a new edition of a game with a very long history and a devoted fan base. If they’d thrown out the core mechanic of the system it wouldn’t be Runequest, and besides the system works very well. You’re proposing a solution to something that isn’t a problem. However, if the d100 system doesn’t grab you, but you like Glorantha then try Heroquest Glorantha (now called Questworlds). It’s a narrative system that’s very different from Runequest. It’s also a brilliant game.
