In collaboration with David from Galipp's Gadgets we're showing you how to repair an outdoor faucet that was damaged from freezing.
Remember when freezing weather approaches, it's time to disconnect those hoses and place outdoor covers and freeze caps on all outdoor faucets. If you leave your garden hose attached (even in Texas) you're asking for trouble.
If you live in an area that requires anti-siphon or vacuum breaker connectors (aka backflow preventers) on your outdoor faucets, it's also a good idea to remove them in the fall when winterizing your home. If it can't be removed then it's a good idea to make sure it's allowed all the water to drain from the line.

Just what I needed! Tough to find video of exterior faucet replacement for someone without access to pipes inside the home. Thanks!
You’re welcome Dave. Glad to help!
One thing I like about this video is you DIDNT preloosen or pre anything before videoing. That’s what they do on all the fixit tv programs giving the impression “it’s sooooo easy”.when it’s more challenging or I would think there is something wrong with the valves when not. I then know what to expect. I wish more were like yours. Thank you So much
Thank you very much! We always try to show actual repairs being made. Appreciate the feedback.
Bev Kay I
I have watched numerous videos for my leaky faucet issue. Some of them were a complete waste of time and others did not match the set-up that I have. This one was the closest and definitely makes the job not so daunting......I just hope I don't make a small leak a huge leak ;) Thank you for making this video.
Good luck. We hope you have success. Thank you very much for commenting.
Best video I have seen regarding water leakage between the siding and the faucet, itself. Got it, understand it, and now going out there to replace it. :) Thank you for your help. Rustyone
+Rustyone Thank you so much! Glad we could help.
Thank you. This video helped me very much. I got this done in

Finally a full complete video for my type of outside faucet setup Thanks
Glad to help. Just be careful. I was changing one the other day on a remodel and it twisted the copper pipe in half instead of unscrewing. Luckily I can get to both sides of the wall. Thanks again for your comment.
diy collaborative good point. I had to fix one of mine and I twisted the pipe in half too. I didn’t chip enough mortar out or something so it was grabbing the pipe still. Cleared more out and thankfully was able to unscrew it. NO access to the other side of the wall lol.
David, Thank you so much for making this video! This is a tremendous help.
+Linda Osborne Thank you Linda!
Exactly what I needed THANK YOU!
+ronneika matthews You are very welcome. Happy to help.
The plumbers that installed my anti-freeze outside spicket soldered it to the pipe inside rather than attach the fitting to screw it into. Number one reason to do "ALL" your home repairs
We totally understand and recently had one like that ourselves. It twisted the pipe off inside the wall. It was on an older home.
We appreciate you watching and providing feedback on this common issue.
@@diycollaborative I am facing this problem. I twisted the copper pipe inside the wall. I had to cut the tube to remove the faucet. Now, I am thinking of going for threaded silcock and connect the tube to the inside tube using corrugated flexible hose like the one used for bathroom sink. Do you see any concerns in this connection? both tubes are only 1/2 inch size.
Thank you !! Perfect. 10 minute fix. Used washer kit off amazon.

Very Good!!!
Thanks!
Thanks for your video! I'm facing the same situation, with the pipe behind the sillcock valve completely exposed. What do you recommend I use to (safely) grip the pipe back there while I'm forcibly removing the old sillcock valve so that I don't completely rip the pipe out or twist it?
You need to make sure the pipe is threaded before attempting to remove it in this manner. Many older homes have these connections soldered in place so if you attempt to turn them, it may twist the pipe off.
If it is threaded you might be able to hold it with vise grips or a pipe wrench if you can get to it.
If you’re not sure, it might be best to reach out to a professional.
Great video help..Thanks!
Thank you! Appreciate the feedback.
I've seen a lot of houses built where these petcocks are screwed into PEX fittings and would never unscrew.
I would like to see a video on that do you have any? thank you

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!
You bet.
People be careful with the shutoff valve at the meter. If you break it you're liable to pay for the repair. Water company told me so.
Yes
Are all outdoor faucets installed that way where you can just unscrew them like that? Our house was built in 1978 and I have two leaky spigots. And they’re in brick so I was contemplating having to cut out the cement mortar and remove the brick around it to replace them?
No they are not and we should have mentioned that in the video. Many older homes do not have this type connection but rather may be soldered in place. If so and you attempt to unscrew them like this you will twist the pipe off.
Please use caution and call the experts if not sure or if you can’t see the connection area.
Great thank you! Judging from the age of my house I’m betting its soldered.
I’ve got a similar issue on my home. The home was built with Pex plumbing and the house bib is leaking behind the siding. I crawled under the house and was able to locate the supply Pex line running to the outside, but cannot see the connection. Is this a case where I can simply unscrew the entire hose bib from the outside? I’m unable to see exactly how the bib is connected because it is blocked by the siding and home framing.
So we stress to use extreme caution here. If you’re not sure, it may be best to involve a professional plumber. Many of the screw on joints we’ve seen were soldered after being screwed in. So if you simply try to unscrew it, it may twist off. Thanks for watching and asking.
Again, better to be careful...
is there a way to know if mine in screw-in vs. kenny lucas (question below) who has an elbow. mine is 1980's fox & jacobs slab foundation. I just don't want to twist if it's not screwed in. thx
Open up the wall behind if you have finished basement, this case you may need to call a plumber
thx sir,
You may also be able to peek in around the pipe itself where it comes out of the wall. If you can you might be able to see the fitting where it screws in at the connection at the rear of the pipe section. My home was built in the 70’s and had this type. Again, a plumber may be your best bet.
My outside faucet froze last year when we were out of town. This is a frost free faucet. I replaced the stem and washer which stopped the leak. This year the same situation, but this time I see lots of solid ice formed downward from the faucet, indicating more similar freeze and leak like last year. by the way this is a frost free faucet. How to fix it this time. Thanks a bunch
Wicked cold in Texas. 🤠
Did you have to re-cement the opening around the faucet?
I’ve actually done that or heavy exterior caulk the same color as the mortar.
Did the leak behind the wall only happen when the homeowner turned on the faucet, or when the homeowner turned on the water main? Mine seems to only happen when the faucet is turned on and pressure, such as a restricted hose, is applied and apears s couple feet back behind the siding...
That is correct. The stem seats near the back of the pipe and may be several inches inside from the outer wall. These are designed to be somewhat freeze proof but what often happens is a hose is left connected during freezing weather, preventing water from draining completely out. When this happens the water freezes and expands which bursts or splits the pipe inside the wall. It doesn’t leak when the water is off, but does when turned on. Hope this helps.
Brian Balloon if it froze and split the line it could leak with the valve off if your stem washer is not seating completely.
That is also correct. Many variables.
@@diycollaborative Mine leaks when I turn the handle on or off. Do I approach this the same way? Or is it a sign that something more is going on?
How did he determine the correct spigot length to purchase? Was this a standard size?
Measured the one taken out. Be very careful with these. I’ve seen many that were soldered at the connection even though it’s threaded. When you attempt to unscrew it, they just break off. If not sure, best to call a professional.

How can you go and use a wrench to unscrew the faucet from the outside without checking inside to see how it is attached, and if it is simply screwed in, somehow, using another person or otherwise, applying pressure to the inside part as you are twisting from the outside?
Most are like this. I have had them twist off though, requiring much more extensive repairs. If not sure, you always call a plumber. Sorry if not helpful, but simply my perspective.
@@diycollaborative Well even this honest answer is helpful. My paranoia will compel me to open the wall inside first and ensure the inside plumbing is secure and threaded first.
Mine keeps unwinding and won’t come loose. I can’t see what kind of a joint they have in there. Any suggestions?
Doesn’t sound good. May require a plumber. I recently had one twist off in the wall that was installed incorrectly.
i went to change mine and the spigot just spins around and wont loosen at all any ideas? oh it only leaks when the hose is hook up
Not sure. They have a long stem on the valve that seats on a seal that may be several inches inside the wall. If cracked between the seat and outside wall, it could only leak at the crack when hose is connected and water is on. Most of the time they crack or split due to water in that area and hose not disconnected in freezing temperatures. Sometimes simply disconnecting the hose will prevent freezing but still a good idea to cover faucets during freezing conditions. As for it turning, there could be issues where it threads together. If you can’t see the back of it or get to it, you may have to a plumber. I recently had one twist off inside the wall and had to completely replace the line inside the wall. I apologize for not being more help but they’re all different. Thank you for watching.
What about the damage to the wood frame between Sheetrock and brick?
Depending on location of the leak and visual inspection, drywall, studs, etc., may need replacing. Had one where inside wall was garage and had no finish on walls. Leak was detected early and required very little attention. Had others on interior walls that had to come down, be replaced and area treated with 50/50 bleach/water and thoroughly dried with heavy duty fans. Be careful if mold is detected.
I have used pipe compound and have found it will fail with water. that is best used for gas. Tape is best, wrapped around 6 times for water applications . Many times used, best to use wrapped tape and DO NOT USE galvanized pipe, it will also fail, rust over. Use brass or copper! You will replace again 10 years later and potentially have a leak that will bring termites in, cause mold issues. Use brass or copper, galvanized pipe will rust and leak! The old galvanized pipe is good, better...the new galvanized is pipe is made low quality, will strip the galvanized portion off where you screw the pipe in, it corrodes, bare metal exposed, then rusts away, slowly!
Thank you very much.
I need to replace mine but I would hate if I take it out go to my home improvement store and they don't have the one I need.I have one in the front of my house that busted a good while ago and the one in the back sprays ware when the hose is on.
Yep there’s always that chance of them being out of the length you need. I have installed one that was too long and then replaced it later when I was able to get the right one. If you know correct length, you can get them from Amazon.
I have never done that before I did not know it just screwed out,I would be afraid to break it off if it was on to tight.
There’s always that chance. Could be time to call a professional. They might give a break for changing out more than one.
Hey I just saw a few videos where the guy just took the handle off took the packing nut and washer out and put the knob back on and screwed the busted pipe out. That way looked a little easier.
You could try that.
Now I just need to get to work. I hope I have the muscle!
Just be careful. Not all are installed like this. If not sure, best to call a professional.
Nice video! We have similar ones on our channel
Thank you.
So does it only leak when the water is turned on?
It depends on where the leak is. If cracked between the exterior wall and inside the wall where the seal is, then yes. It will only leak when the faucet is turned on. You might try connecting a hose with a nozzle attached that shuts off and with it, turn the way on and see if you have a leak. If the break is behind the seat, it will leak all the time even with the faucet off. Just be careful trying to remove these as I’ve seen them soldiered at the joint even with threads. When you try to unscrew it, it will twist off in the wall. If you’re not sure, better to call a professional.

Can you just turn the water off near the hose water pipes, instead of entire house?
Debbie, some homes may have multiple shut off locations. If you know where they, that would be perfect. Otherwise, just use the main. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Gig'em!
mine was soldiered in thanks for
Yes, many are.
It gets so much more complicated because I don't have a straight pipe on the inside of the house. There's an immediate elbow as the pipe runs down the wall.
Yes - not all are like this.

And when you’ve fixed yours, don’t leave your hose connected to the new faucet! That’s how I accidentally broke my frost free faucet. Leave the hose off so the water can drain out!
That is 100% right and what happens to most people. Leave the hose on the faucet with nozzle on hose. Turn the water off and hose remains full of water. Freezing weather hits, water expands and busted faucet is the result. Thank you!

He used the adjustable wrench incorrectly. It should be turned the opposite direction for turning. There is actually a book and technical school that shows you how to use tools the proper way. Can you believe that!? I’m just messing with you. But he did use the adjustable rods incorrectly. According to the book from the technical school.
You are absolutely right and we talked about when making this video. My dad taught me the correct way to use my tools growing up and I pointed that out to my son who was in this video.

Lucky you have enough room for that wrench. Otherwise you'd have needed a special curb key tool.
Agree
I would be afraid to twist the faucet like that without knowing whether it was welded on, or screwed in. If it was welded and you twist it, it’s going to split inside the wall.
Yes, that is correct and we’ve had that happen several times. If not sure, best to call a professional.

no good for those in newer homes with pex...
Ian I got lucky. My home has pex but the brass angle fitting was secured very well inside of the wall. Unscrewed from it no problem. The brick veneer and mortar was a much bigger issue for mine.
Agree Ian. By the time you purchase Pex tools it may be more or same expense for a plumber. We have found Pex tools for rent btw.
