    In collaboration with David from Galipp's Gadgets we're showing you how to repair an outdoor faucet that was damaged from freezing.
    Remember when freezing weather approaches, it's time to disconnect those hoses and place outdoor covers and freeze caps on all outdoor faucets. If you leave your garden hose attached (even in Texas) you're asking for trouble.
    If you live in an area that requires anti-siphon or vacuum breaker connectors (aka backflow preventers) on your outdoor faucets, it's also a good idea to remove them in the fall when winterizing your home. If it can't be removed then it's a good idea to make sure it's allowed all the water to drain from the line.

    One thing I like about this video is you DIDNT preloosen or pre anything before videoing. That’s what they do on all the fixit tv programs giving the impression “it’s sooooo easy”.when it’s more challenging or I would think there is something wrong with the valves when not. I then know what to expect. I wish more were like yours. Thank you So much

    I have watched numerous videos for my leaky faucet issue. Some of them were a complete waste of time and others did not match the set-up that I have. @@diycollaborative I am facing this problem. I twisted the copper pipe inside the wall. I had to cut the tube to remove the faucet. Now, I am thinking of going for threaded silcock and connect the tube to the inside tube using corrugated flexible hose like the one used for bathroom sink. Do you see any concerns in this connection? both tubes are only 1/2 inch size.

    Thanks for your video! I'm facing the same situation, with the pipe behind the sillcock valve completely exposed. What do you recommend I use to (safely) grip the pipe back there while I'm forcibly removing the old sillcock valve so that I don't completely rip the pipe out or twist it?

    • @diycollaborative
      @diycollaborative  3 года назад +3

      You need to make sure the pipe is threaded before attempting to remove it in this manner. Many older homes have these connections soldered in place so if you attempt to turn them, it may twist the pipe off.
      If it is threaded you might be able to hold it with vise grips or a pipe wrench if you can get to it.
      If you’re not sure, it might be best to reach out to a professional.

    Are all outdoor faucets installed that way where you can just unscrew them like that? Our house was built in 1978 and I have two leaky spigots. And they’re in brick so I was contemplating having to cut out the cement mortar and remove the brick around it to replace them?

    • @diycollaborative
      @diycollaborative  3 года назад +1

      No they are not and we should have mentioned that in the video. Many older homes do not have this type connection but rather may be soldered in place. If so and you attempt to unscrew them like this you will twist the pipe off.
      Please use caution and call the experts if not sure or if you can’t see the connection area.

    • @whiterock1865

    I’ve got a similar issue on my home. The home was built with Pex plumbing and the house bib is leaking behind the siding. I crawled under the house and was able to locate the supply Pex line running to the outside, but cannot see the connection. Is this a case where I can simply unscrew the entire hose bib from the outside? I’m unable to see exactly how the bib is connected because it is blocked by the siding and home framing.

    • @diycollaborative
      @diycollaborative  3 года назад

      So we stress to use extreme caution here. If you’re not sure, it may be best to involve a professional plumber. Many of the screw on joints we’ve seen were soldered after being screwed in. So if you simply try to unscrew it, it may twist off. Thanks for watching and asking.
      Again, better to be careful...

      You may also be able to peek in around the pipe itself where it comes out of the wall. If you can you might be able to see the fitting where it screws in at the connection at the rear of the pipe section. My home was built in the 70’s and had this type. Again, a plumber may be your best bet.

    Did the leak behind the wall only happen when the homeowner turned on the faucet, or when the homeowner turned on the water main? Mine seems to only happen when the faucet is turned on and pressure, such as a restricted hose, is applied and apears s couple feet back behind the siding...

    • @diycollaborative
      @diycollaborative  5 лет назад

      That is correct. The stem seats near the back of the pipe and may be several inches inside from the outer wall. These are designed to be somewhat freeze proof but what often happens is a hose is left connected during freezing weather, preventing water from draining completely out. When this happens the water freezes and expands which bursts or splits the pipe inside the wall. It doesn’t leak when the water is off, but does when turned on. Hope this helps.

    • @Newlinjim
      @Newlinjim 5 лет назад

      Brian Balloon if it froze and split the line it could leak with the valve off if your stem washer is not seating completely.

    How can you go and use a wrench to unscrew the faucet from the outside without checking inside to see how it is attached, and if it is simply screwed in, somehow, using another person or otherwise, applying pressure to the inside part as you are twisting from the outside?

    • @diycollaborative
      @diycollaborative  5 лет назад

      Not sure. They have a long stem on the valve that seats on a seal that may be several inches inside the wall. If cracked between the seat and outside wall, it could only leak at the crack when hose is connected and water is on. Most of the time they crack or split due to water in that area and hose not disconnected in freezing temperatures. Sometimes simply disconnecting the hose will prevent freezing but still a good idea to cover faucets during freezing conditions. As for it turning, there could be issues where it threads together. If you can’t see the back of it or get to it, you may have to a plumber. I recently had one twist off inside the wall and had to completely replace the line inside the wall. I apologize for not being more help but they’re all different. Thank you for watching.

    • @diycollaborative
      @diycollaborative  4 года назад

      Depending on location of the leak and visual inspection, drywall, studs, etc., may need replacing. Had one where inside wall was garage and had no finish on walls. Leak was detected early and required very little attention. Had others on interior walls that had to come down, be replaced and area treated with 50/50 bleach/water and thoroughly dried with heavy duty fans. Be careful if mold is detected.

  • @manzam01
    @manzam01 4 года назад +2

    I have used pipe compound and have found it will fail with water. that is best used for gas. Tape is best, wrapped around 6 times for water applications . Many times used, best to use wrapped tape and DO NOT USE galvanized pipe, it will also fail, rust over. Use brass or copper! You will replace again 10 years later and potentially have a leak that will bring termites in, cause mold issues. Use brass or copper, galvanized pipe will rust and leak! The old galvanized pipe is good, better...the new galvanized is pipe is made low quality, will strip the galvanized portion off where you screw the pipe in, it corrodes, bare metal exposed, then rusts away, slowly!

    So does it only leak when the water is turned on?

    • @diycollaborative
      @diycollaborative  Год назад

      It depends on where the leak is. If cracked between the exterior wall and inside the wall where the seal is, then yes. It will only leak when the faucet is turned on. You might try connecting a hose with a nozzle attached that shuts off and with it, turn the way on and see if you have a leak. If the break is behind the seat, it will leak all the time even with the faucet off. Just be careful trying to remove these as I’ve seen them soldiered at the joint even with threads. When you try to unscrew it, it will twist off in the wall. If you’re not sure, better to call a professional.
