Meet “Merkel One”: The New German Air Force Airbus A350

- The Executive Transport Wing of the German Government (Flugbereitschaft) will soon have one of three Airbus A350s. These aircraft would be considered the German equivalents to Air Force One. According to FlugRevue, the first Airbus A350 has already been painted. Last week, the aircraft rolled out of the paint shop at the Airbus facility in Hamburg-Finkenwerder - only to fly back to Toulouse shortly after.

Whoa the colors of the flag work so well with the white. She's beautiful!
They’re still missing their Air Force markings including the Iron Cross as well as their names. Traditionally the two largest planes have always been named „Konrad Adenauer“ and „Theodor Heuss“ after the first Federal Chancellor and Federal President. Wonder after whom the third one is going to be named. First Parliamentary President Erich Köhler could be an option.
Wernher von Kerman my guess is that 10+03 (the first A359) will stay nameless and only the two other A359s (maybe 10+01 and 02) will be named following the scheme after the A343s are retired!
The A350 was named "Kurt Schumacher" leader of the Social Democratic Party one of the founding fathers of the Post War German Democracy.

It’s not an expensive to operate problem.
The A380 can’t land everywhere due to its wing span. Weight might be a problem too.
@ Using foreign-built aircraft isn't a good idea, you expose a higher risk of foreign reliance and surveillance etc, and the pressure from general public, especially those from the factory towns.
And - they are part of the Airbus program.

Finally this plane gets some big recognition
The A350 is an awesome plane. Wish they had made a new livery for it though, this one looks straight out of the 80s.
It looks understated, clean and all-business. I like it. I think it suits the Germans.
BreakLux agreed... too understated
The 80's were Awesome!
United looked great! You could tell the liveries apart.
I like the design... it's 'timeless'👍
Well, the Air Force One it's maybe the only head of state transport with that kind of livery
At other air forces the VIP transport usually has a full grey livery (actually the first A310 from the Luftwaffe used to be full grey) and countries like France, Germany, Mexico, Russia, Korea, Japan, Poland... Normally has a full white livery with some stripes with the colours of their national flags

Rare Moment...amazing video...
This will have significantly lower operating costs when compared to USAF's VC-25 (Air Force One) based on the 747-8.
stanimal8 yes
Yes but does Trump care about the costs of anything?
Well, that Air Force One probably have more to offer like famous nuclear button and command control etc, so it's hard to compare?
Also doesn’t consider that it would be pretty stupid if the United States President would fly an aircraft built by airbus when Boeing is a US company. Plus the large size of the 747 acts a power projection.
Immanuel J what about the Dreamliner or the 777 ?

When Italy wet-leased an A340 as presidential aircraft the whole country was mad at the prime minister. We’re clowns,I know
In France, some months ago people were mad at the prime minister when he travelled on an A340 to New Caledonia (French territory in the Pacific). The aircraft was wet-leased just for this trip and people just screamed because it was « so expensive ». So don’t worry we are clowns as well...
Dont worry, there are people in Germany that say the same about the A350.

Lol I’m jealous they get an a350 while we get an old 747-200. A 300 would be cool, but it’s time for the 8s or something like a 787 to make a statement!!!!
Air Force one is being replaced with the 747-8
The 787 it's to small also one of the requirements for air force one is that It has to have 4 engines. The president travels around with secret service two limos, press, emergency personal etc and you think that's all going to fit in a 787..also the 747 is iconic, 97 percent of the human population cant tell aircrafts apart but 97 percent know what a 747 is

Why not for engines?
Mmh will there ever be a super jumbo fuel tanker just imagine the airbus A380 refueling a bomber well I know it will be too heavy but its just a fan concept maybe for the near future .
Rafiah Aspagi theres actually a 747 refueler used by the iranian air force
Or better yet, a380 flying hospitals.
Or a380 zero gravity planes
Wouldn't be feasable. Too much empty space they would carry around. A tanker jet purely uses the kerosine it stores in its tanks. Flying an A380 would mean you carry an entire upper deck without much use in a war zone.
Theirs no future for the 380 Airbus biggest mistake, 300 sold and already heading to the scrap yard.
Man, the Geico Gecko sure does get around! Now he's narrating aviation videos.
"Just 15 minutes could save you 15% or more!"
The first vip A350.
The livery is quite underwhelming. And I’m surprised the German government operate Canadian Bombardiers & not French Dassault Falcons.
@Mateusz Wojnarowicz It's not a "nickname"! The product is now only available as Airbus A220.
The stripe at the front diminished the the beauty of the aircraft.
Their engines are made in Germany, probably the reason (in Dahlewitz)
Falcons are already widely used by French Air Force. Germans probably choosed what was rapidly available for their business jets.
Mateusz Wojnarowicz
Airbus is not French. It’s a European joint venture and the manufacturing facilities are spread out around Europe, several of them in Germany.
Nice video maybe you should make a video about north Korea's one star airline and their old Russian/Ukraine planes.
Don't take it seriously, but as a German I have to say, that the way you pronounce "Flugbereitschaft" is weird.
As a Canadian the way he pronounces Bombadier is very weird.
Flugberaatschaft 😂😂😂😂😂😂
hahaa I'm sure as a native speaker it would sound far off. It probably could have been worse though :P
TBH I was positively surprised about the pronounciation.
I don't await from English speaking people, that they can speech Flugbereitschaft correctly.
I think, he speeched very well.
Fluugbereeitschaaft - ich kann nicht mehr 😂
The livery look so 1980s
i wonder if those cancelations were not actually intended so they could hide new aircraft for longer time
Fluuberäischaaaaaft 👍👍👍 Mega
small correction, Flugbereitschaft actually translates to "Flight Readiness" there's no VIP or High Ranking anything in the Name.
Not to be a stickler, but the meaning of Bereitschaft in this context is better described with an airwing (for transport of people as in Flugreise) which is at-the-ready rather than flight readiness which more describes a status, not a branch within the Luftwaffe which it is : )
Literal translations are of little help in these situations and I think he did a good job in the first place by simply naming the equivalent in the UK/US.
A few years ago i saw the Global 5000 on the canarian islands, Angela Merkel was there on holiday :D
I hope that one of the A350s is named „Angela Merkel“. All bigger government aircrafts are named after former chancellors.
They will propably get the same names from the old two A 340s, the name of the third plane is yet to be discussed
Or after presidents - and no recent ones.
Does it come with IFF?
anything about it's protection systems is secret
Of course it has IFF, missile defense etc.
Would look really great if those German flag stripes were bigger!
Who else waiting for Ramy's RC a350
What happened to the symbol “iron cross”.
It will be together with the reg where currently that white space in the flag is! It’s also featured on the wings
Why does this have french registration?
It's still Airbus responsibility for the plane until it's sent to Germany, then it's signed off to the German government before the flight.
She looks nice
Wait, so it’s merkel eins?
no ... the first one will surely be called Konrad Adenauer .... the second and third name is still not public
@@MW-dz1hg probably Friedrich Ebert
It is big and representative. The future flagship of Airbus. Definitely a better decision, than A330.
India went for 2 B777 ER operated by Indian AirForce for replacement of B747 which was operated by Air India.
Maybe if some customer canceled their order for a Airbus A380 maybe when the A380 was still in production maybe someone could of made a super A380 bomber maybe if the bombs were light enough for the takeoff weight for the A380.
Rafiah Aspagi too expensive, existing upgraded tech is more cost effective.Like the american B52 and russian TU-95
The A380 is still being produced, there are 9 planes in the queue (8 for Emirates, which they still want). A delivery was just delayed upon request from a customer.
The A380 as a bomber, would be the worst bomber in history.
The weight of the bombs wouldn't be a problem. Opening the hull for bomb release is. Plus a bomber dropping unguided ammo is outdated.
Bombs light enough ? Really
Should have switched to another Quadjet such as B747-8 or A380. Trijets/Quadjets are more redundant.
Engines are just part of the story. In fact their existing Flugbereitschaft, an A340-300 has been a laugh joke by being so unreliable, that Merkel had to take a commercial Iberia flight instead.
@@steinwaldmadchen but you have to ponder why other heads of state like Trump, Putin, Xi, Moon, Abe, Hamad al Thani, Salman and many other countries still prefer to stick with their Quadjets.
It could be the technician's fault too. The Luftwaffe couldn't service their own fighter jets, but other civilian airlines didn't have any issue using the A340. Makes you wonder could it be the some sort of national problem?
@@AbcdEfgh-sq2tf No, Abe just switched to 77W a year or two ago. And equally many countries rely on twinjets like A310 and A330 etc.
747 was the only option for a large VIP aircraft, and 748 is still larger than the largest twinjet available, so
And if technician is an issue, I don't think having more engines helps. Yes quads might have more redundancy, but don't forget the fact that ETOPS twinjets have higher reliability requirement than quads, so end up the uptime difference may not be as large as you think.
Plus, if foreign built aircraft are excluded, A350 and A330 are the only viable choices. Another 2nd hand A340 doesn't sound like a good idea, and A380 is simply too inflexible.
They are less economical and this redundancy problem is not really a talking matter anymore, it's been quite a long time since the aviation has moved to the double engine configuration, if it was that unreliable than they wouldn't be flying.
@@steinwaldmadchen @notproplayer 3
I dont know about you guys but I would be rather have 75% full power rather than 55-60% full power when in an emergency situation (being chased by hostile forces?). One have to remember that these heads of states are clearly a higher profile target to potential or exsisting enemy forces than your typical average civilian.

So far so good, but does the "Flugbereitschaft" have qualified technicians and qualified pilots? It seems the ongoing problems with the A-340 planes was not outdated technology of the aircraft but the casual pilots and casual technicians of the "Flugbereitschaft".
I assume that the maintenance of these aircraft will be executed by Lufthansa Technik.
Of course, the Flugbereitschaft has fully trained pilots who are authorized to fly this aircraft.
I think aging is more of the reason. Their A340 was a second hand from Lufthansa.

I think it fit well, it is very discreet and simple amd also continues the previous design.
On the political scene the "German goverment" is know to be very conservative and reserved in terms of public display, so the livery fits that very well.
There are other nations that flex with behavior and are more vocal in their desicions (ther is an orange monkey well know for that) to wich a more posh design (maybe baby blue; blue and gold :D) fits better.
FlugbeREIDschAAFT :D
Yeah well, it can't land on BER though.
I am quite sure this was a very efficient spend of German taxpayer money because I can see zero Euros were spent on exterior livery design.
Always makes me wonder what people would believe to be a better design. The white is absolutely perfect and the flag being taken around the plane in a narrow band really looks good enough. I'm no fan of "all flag" liveries some people keep demanding and if the Americans follow through with that their new AF1 is going to be the laughing stock at any international event, just like their President.
Not even that long ago the planes of the German government did look almost exactly like Lufthansa planes with the only real difference being the Luftwaffe-Markings.
And dont worry. They will spent a lot of money for saefetyfeatures at the in and outside of the A 350
I meant to say double safety. Why not Four engines?
There are 2 planes that Airbus produces that have 4 engines. The A340 cannot be acquired new and the A380 is too large. For political reasons, a German chancellor cannot fly American. And the fact that engines today are very safe helps too.
Engines are very reliable nowadays, two really are enough to maintain safe operations.
Theoretical acquiring a foreign made aircraft isn’t a problem, but of course Airbus is the first choice!
I really like the aircraft but they could've come up with a better/new design...
