Parting Blade Holder QCTP for the Lathe

  • I build this Parting Blade Holder for a 26mm SPB26-2 Parting Blade. My Quick Change System only allows for 12mm tooling, so i had to come up with a different approach to mount the 26mm tall partingblade underneath the center line.

    Nice video! The new tool holder looks great. When you do the relief cuts to allow for tool clamping pressure, what stops the tool from being pulled out of vertical as the screws tighten?

      Do you mean the distrotion of the toolholder itself? I really didn't consider this at all... 🤔
      But you're right, as i tighten the screws, the top part slightly pivots outward. So in theory the blade is now not dead on vertical/square.
      I just checked it with a square(couldntl' fit a 0.05mm feeler gauge), the distortion is quite small, since the fit of the blade was tight from the beginning, and didn't need much movement to clamp it.

      @@ChristophLehner ok, that's interesting to note. I assumed you had seen a similar tool clamping design available commercially, so wasn't sure it was distorting at all, or if it was it had negligible effect on the tool. Thanks for the reply

    Nice project and video! I chucked when the slitting saw jammed on the bristles. I wouldn't have seen that coming. I haven't worked with slitting saws so can't give much feedback there. I have been doing a fair bit of cold bluing recently and picked up on a few things. If you can get the kind that comes in concentrate form you can submerse your whole part and get a more consistent finish. You can even dilute the premixed like you have with distilled water to get a larger volume. Just takes the reaction a little longer. I clean the my parts with acetone and blow off with compressed air. Another thing that helps is to do one application, wipe off the whole part, then do another application. Hope this helps! Before too long, I'll be making some tool holders myself! Thanks for sharing

      I guess submerging the whole part & thoroughly cleaning, is the key to an even coating.

    You did very well, these parting off blades are useful.
    I made a similar tool holder but split the block horizontally mid way up from the front to most of the way to the back with a band saw, much quicker
    And then just installed a m8 screw vertically to clamp the blade at the front (insert end)
    Not having a small dovetail cutter I found that once the 3mm Slot for the blade was machined I could tip the block sideways in the vice to the required angle and run along the edge of the shallow slot with a 4mm end mill both sides to make a dovetail. The end mill needs to go a bit deeper than the bottom of the shallow slot. With a 3x100 blade 100mm bar can be parted off.
    I run my tool upside down and the lath in reverse to avoid chatter/grabbing

      Thanks for the comment! Your design sounds a lot simpler/easier to make... I orientated on the holders comercially available. The bandsaw would probably have been a lot faster way to cut the slot.
      Until now, i didn't expierence any chatter/grabbing while parting. Is there anything to consider when running the tool upside down & the lathe in reverse?
