Following the destruction of the main worship hall at Zuizenji temple by a fire in the middle of the 18th century, woodcarvers with official patronage were dispatched from Kyoto to assist the highly skilled carpenters of Inami with the reconstruction work. It is believed that the techniques the woodcarvers shared with the local carpenters marked the beginnings of woodcarving in the area.
At first, the Inami carpenters performed both carpentry and woodcarving work, creating pieces mainly for temples. However, by the Meiji era (1868-1912), specialist woodcarvers had emerged and were producing items of a more general nature, including transoms for homes.

Im a Maori wood carver from Aotearoa New Zealand and it is always humbling to see other cultures styles and approach to our discipline and to see where we ourselves sit on the international scale among the rest of the world. Beautiful to watch

Since when was wood carving a discipline from New Zealand/Maorian? From what I've read many ancient cultures have been wood carving, so there's really no definite way to say who's or which country it belongs to.

What remarkably beautiful work. It's humbling just to see a clip of it. I hope that more people become interested in keeping old traditional works like these alive through apprenticing but I think that many people feel it's inaccessible to learn about them (we have the same problem here, with other traditional arts).

Wonderful work, I wish I had half your talent. I am currently working on a Ran for my Japanese room above the tokonoma.
I am using mahogany but wish I had kiri. Getting good Japanese chisels is very hard. My last trip to Japan I went to the Japanese Wood Craftsman Museum in Kobe. You should display your work there. The tools and workmanship there is stunning. They have a skeleton of a tea house. I could spend days just observing. Wish your videos were longer. Thanks For Sharing!

2:42 It's a testament to the sharpness of the tools that each stroke he makes is a 'finishing' cut, that can stand on its own without any final sanding, etc. Obviously combined with years of skill and the perfect wood.
