Following the destruction of the main worship hall at Zuizenji temple by a fire in the middle of the 18th century, woodcarvers with official patronage were dispatched from Kyoto to assist the highly skilled carpenters of Inami with the reconstruction work. It is believed that the techniques the woodcarvers shared with the local carpenters marked the beginnings of woodcarving in the area.
At first, the Inami carpenters performed both carpentry and woodcarving work, creating pieces mainly for temples. However, by the Meiji era (1868-1912), specialist woodcarvers had emerged and were producing items of a more general nature, including transoms for homes.

Im a Maori wood carver from Aotearoa New Zealand and it is always humbling to see other cultures styles and approach to our discipline and to see where we ourselves sit on the international scale among the rest of the world. Beautiful to watch
Since when was wood carving a discipline from New Zealand/Maorian? From what I've read many ancient cultures have been wood carving, so there's really no definite way to say who's or which country it belongs to.
Tjolle Banan that’s not what they were saying.
@@TjolleBanan he means ours as in a unity of carvers on the same scale.Sorry i know its been 2 years.
Each little video by this poster is a small gem, crafted as finely and carefully as the artisans‘ own work. The videos are inspirational and strangely relaxing. Thank you so much.
Greenbunnie K-drama rocks agreed. Watching those videos inspired me to study Japanese traditional fine art.
Wow such beauty such skill
Absolutely incredible beautiful wonderful work. I could watch artisans like this grand master work for hours
I can't understand the need to dislike this. Thank you for sharing what you do.
Thank you!
Amazing skills and talent, are there any young apprentices learning these skills or will it become another lost art?
i have never seen such beautiful work, praise to people who do this .
Wish the video was longer. I love watching wood carving.
Thank you very much! However, there are no plans to create a feature film. I'm sorry.
@@aoyamasquare XD would have been nice lol
With so much ugliness in our world nowadays it is good to find some peace and beauty. Well done, beautiful. Darlington, South Carolina USA
His wife: had a good day at work dear? What did you get up to?
Him: oh just knocked out another masterpiece before lunch.
So intricately beautiful. There is a lot of artistry and dedication that goes into all the amazing carvings and products. Trully amazing artworks.
Thank you!
Exquisite art, the environment he works in is inspiring, and what he is wearing is all beautiful.
What remarkably beautiful work. It's humbling just to see a clip of it. I hope that more people become interested in keeping old traditional works like these alive through apprenticing but I think that many people feel it's inaccessible to learn about them (we have the same problem here, with other traditional arts).
Wonderful work, I wish I had half your talent. I am currently working on a Ran for my Japanese room above the tokonoma.
I am using mahogany but wish I had kiri. Getting good Japanese chisels is very hard. My last trip to Japan I went to the Japanese Wood Craftsman Museum in Kobe. You should display your work there. The tools and workmanship there is stunning. They have a skeleton of a tea house. I could spend days just observing. Wish your videos were longer. Thanks For Sharing!
So easy ... to mess up. Amazing craftsmanship.
What is the wood most commonly used for such carving?
always happy to see someone who knows how to use chisels
Are you a craftsman who also uses chisels?
Or his/her hands. 😉
good one
I suspect that man could teach even the most seasoned wood worker from virtually any other culture a few things with a single one of his chisels never mind all of them
Such a beautiful video, such beautiful carving. Thank you for this art in motion.
Thank you!

Quelle magie! Merci d'exister. )
How much time does it take to master this skill ?
I love this work. art. I`m Working, ceramic, embossed leather, and relief, metal work, but with all due respect, the entire atmosphere of this artist is to admire his talent.
2:42 It's a testament to the sharpness of the tools that each stroke he makes is a 'finishing' cut, that can stand on its own without any final sanding, etc. Obviously combined with years of skill and the perfect wood.
Real artists see the final shape inside wood. He is a master.

We are so glad you are interested in our unique culture.
2:14 this reminds me so much of the Sofia Coppola film with Bill Murray in the photo studio, where the photographer says many things in Japanese, but the interpreter just translates three words. -"is that ALL he said"? Same here, lots of spoken words, too few letters on the subtitle.
That if naturally beautiful wood loverly craftsmanship how long did it take you to finish it and how old are your carving chisels 😀🇬🇧
I cannot understand people who dislike such videos.... Why?
Envy....?
That looks totally easy and it could be done in 4 minutes and 4 seconds, this something I can totally do! I'm quitting my job and going to start wood carving as of right now!
