      Choose to fight with Elise and save her or chase after Germain and Elise dies making all the future interactions be her as a ghost like she was in the dlc
      2. Add cutscenes of Bellic talking working with Arno - clone wars style training. So their relationship seems deeper. Get actor who played Arno to add some dialogue to have with himself to show more growth or how he wrestles with his past.

    An AC games combat should be simple but with a certain complexity to it. You should use different buttons to use different strikes and different weapons like heavy should add weight . It should be slightly fast like AC 3 and there should be ‘intrinsic movement’ where you can hit one person and move freely tho hit another.

    • @btchiaintkidding7837
      @btchiaintkidding7837 Год назад

      so basically AC1's combat.
      simplified looking combat with tons of depth and perfect balance of lethal pseudo-realism where button mashing never works. AC1 has the best "flow state" to its combat in all AC games but it was considered "janky combat" ffs by the fanbase so that aint ever gonna happen.
      also faster = ez fun , but weighty and steady combat can be better if done right.

    • @jirkazalabak1514
      @jirkazalabak1514 3 года назад +2

      As Walshie says, it had the best combat "in concept", but the execution fell flat on it´s face. Basically, it´s a system built around timing and precision, in a game with horrendous input lag and inconsistent mechanics. If the Unity system was as consistent as the AC1-Rev system was, it would easily be the best.

    • @btchiaintkidding7837
      @btchiaintkidding7837 Год назад

      i am really glad to see AC1 so high in this least. i played AC1 recently and absolutely shocked at how good the combat was and how much depth it had despite its simplified looking combat. enemies are deadly and can quickly k^ll you if u are not paying attention but every death is fair
      AC fanbase really really doesnt appreciate the combat system of AC1 enough. it hits the perfect balance of pseudo realism and visceral. u had to deal with every different type of enemy in a different tactic
      AC unity is really satisfying, but the goofy wobbly impact animations, janky af kill animations and people surviving half a dozen lethal stabs kinda feels video gameish and eventually gonna get to you, but might get tedious a lil cuz arno barely lands decisive blows on enemies despite making clear openings.

    The only problem I found with unity's combat is that even after the patches (for me) using a one handed sword was the way to go because if I used any other weapon the animations would glitch out and i couldn't tell what was happening. Plus if you learn the just swapping between enemies and just hitting them once to interrupt their animations you can cheese your way through the whole game like that.

    • @jirkazalabak1514
      @jirkazalabak1514 3 года назад

      To be honest, that is a fairly realistic way to go about it. If you are fighting 3 or more people, the last thing you want to do is to just tunnel vision against one of them, and give free shots to your other enemies.

    Origins and valhalla my favorites they have the most fun for me i like that a bunch of guards actually mean something plus its not boring i havent played every ac but rogue black flag unity and 2(games i played)
    I found the combat to be boring like i dont remember any moments where i was like fuck yeah lets go
    Unity was extremely slow for me felt clunky and so boring
    4 so just .....idk what but not fun
    Same with rogue
    2 for me was forgetable then again my disc fucked up half way thru so i couldnt finish back then so idk ill buy ezio collection n try one day but i cant remember much fun
    The reason i like the new combat system especially vahalla the most is that when i do get into combat its not shut my brain off mash square or mash break guard/ parry
    Origins actively made me take in alot location amount of enemies spacing and weapon type of me and opponents i remember fighting phylakes and it was damage spongey yes which is bad but i do remember being on edge and dying cause of my fuck ups this why i say tho valhalla is the best or will be for me (havent played only saw)
    Its not damage spongey but makes me think like origins
    But aye this my opinion ur entitled to yours and me to mine

    My ranking of the combat:
    1. ACB/Rev - Kill streaks are fun and surprisingly cathartic. (Though it made me feel more like Discount Batman rather than an Assassin)
    2. AC 1 - Nailed the dichotomy of stealth and combat perfectly and makes you feel most like an assassin.
    3. AC Valhalla - It's easily the best of the RPG trilogy and I quite liked the no. of options you have wrt weapons and the stamina kept your dodges in control. Stuns are also very satisfying to pull off.
    4. AC 2 - While it does improve on AC 1 quite a lot, I found the AI too damn stagnant to do anything, you can taunt sure but you lack the pressure from AC 1.
    5. AC Origins - A shift in paradigm for the series. It didn't make me feel like an assassin but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it. Also it felt fucking grounded out of the RPG games but Valhalla was just way more fun to use.
    6. AC Unity - It was a good system in concept but Jesus the gunmen and the input lag ruins it for me. Input lag works for parkour because it is exploitable but in combat, you get fucked harder than Kiryu with the Obatarian.
    7. AC 3 - While I do appreciate the challenge, the lack of healthbars and the combat being tied to animations was a bit silly though they looked nice and it got something outta me.
    8. AC 4/Rogue - Shit combat, counter spammy, mashy as hell, looks like shit, moving on.
    9. AC Odyssey - Spongy mess but at least it is a bit fluid
    10. AC Syndicate - It is just a few sound effects short of a loony toons cartoon.

    Best possible combat I feel Frankensteins many of these combat elements, adding a few.
    -Adrenaline to limit how often and how many times you can use your best abilities, earned by feats of skill (headshots/parries/dodges) more than just spamming attacks
    -Taunting for if you prefer counters over spamming
    -Side steps and backsteps (Ezio trilogy) over huge dodges and rolls, this isn't Dark Souls
    - Different weapons serve different purposes- don't let my sword be as useful against heavy armor as a spear, arrow, or axe
    -Weapon sets- Origin and Odyssey let us switch between types of weapons so we didnt have to menu to change style
    - Armor that let you mix and match without penalty for not using a whole set (and let us change the cosmetics)
    -Armor that resists damage types. Let heavy armor slow you down and harder to climb (if at all) but light attacks from light weapons barely affect you. But a dane axe, spear, bow/crossbow, make you concerned. Let MY light attacks with light weapons ping off a heavily armored enemy and i have to change my gear or how i attack them.
    - All weapons are the same level and don't need upgrades, the weapons don't get better, YOU get better
    - Enemies of low "level" have very basic attacks, higher "level" get access to more complex attacks you have to better time, predict, and escape. Let threat be dictated by how hard it is to beat them, not damage sponging.
    -Bows need to be lethal. Headshot kills without helmets. Special shots from adrenaline is ok.
    -Can we get some real horse combat? You telling me Ezio, Kassandra, and Bayek can swing a sword from a horse but Eivor can't?
    -Counters only kill weak unarmored enemies. Armor, higher 'level', and enemy types can reduce or negate that damage, but you can't instakill those stronger enemies with a different 1-3 button combo.
    -Kill chains have to start on weak enemies, chain 4 an armored enemy, chain 5 a 'captain' type enemy. Reward choosing your targets during kill streaks.

    Ac1 and ac2 are the only two combats I really enjoyed in all of Ac.
    Unity had potential but as it is right now it dosen't feel better than ac1 and ac2 for me, it only looks better and that's it, it feels sluggish, unresponsive, and janky, also the variety of weapons' stats are bad, since the swords are the superior one out of all of em. Stun bombs are also annoying since it's radius is too big and you can't roll away but instead you have to run away so you can avoid it.
    Oh and also how can I forget, the enemy can shoot at you if you have crowds all over you, it's so annoying for me trying to escape, like at least make the guards unable shoot civilians because it's against there duty, while the thugs can shoot civilians but the bullet would stop it from going through civilians to make it not hit you.

      My personal pick from worst to best:
      Assassin's Creed 2: This stealth system is a joke due to its awful detection system and the useless poison blade and throwing knives not working. It literally is almost impossible to stealth without Mercanaries, Thieves and Courtesans.
      Assassin's Creed 3: Has the same issues as AC2 but is slighty better due to the Assassin guild system and trap mines.
      Assassin's Creed Origins & Odyssey: WHY DID THEY REMOVE THE INSTA KILLS!!??
      Assassin's Creed Valhalla: definitely a big upgrade from Origins and Odyssey due to it bringing back insta kill hidden blade kills. But guards detect you way too easily.
      Assassin's Creed Black Flag & Rogue: these two games probably has the easiest stealth system in any AC game. Being in high profile doesn't matter anymore because you can run and guards can't hear you and also thanks to the blowpipe/Rifle you can distract and put guards to sleep which makes stealthing much easier. The problem is that it's a bit too easy for my liking.
      Assassin's Creed Brotherhood & Revelations: Much, much MUCH better than AC2, the detection system has been highly improved and the poison blade has been replaced with the poison darts which is much more useful. And throwing knives finally works because Ezio can charge throw with knives taking more guards at once without alerting any guards.
      Assassin's Creed Unity & Syndicate: This stealth system would actually be the best if it actually functioned every time. However due to it not working all the time guards will see you through walls giving the player some really awful gamer rage, which is enough for me not to put it at the top.
      Assassin's Creed: This by far is my favorite one because it has the best social stealth system in the franchise. Mastering AC1's stealth system is so satisfying and it's fun to try to blend in with the crowd because that's what made Assassin's Creed's stealth system unique. It wasn't about hiding it was about blending in with the crowd.

    I really don't understand your ranking of AC1-Revelations. It's really only driven by intrinsic motivation and totally lacks any external one on account of broken balancing. In an ideally balanced game the overall effectiveness (taking into acount cost and situal variation) is exactly average, there are no outliers. Realistically that state can't be reached but approximated. The problem with those games is that the counter is so extremely powerful that it makes everything else abysmal. There's no reason beyond personal agenda to do anything but standing in the middle and counter killing the entire group one by one. That one matter really ruins an otherwise decent system, although the combo kill introduces similar issues.

  • @liambenn1214
    @liambenn1214 3 года назад +2

    this video is 99% nostalgia for the games 1% actual critique of the combat systems. Odyssey, origins and Valhalla all had better combat systems than their predecessors. The oldest ac games (ac1, 2, B and revelations) all had terrible, clunky combat that wasn't rewarding in the slightest. It felt more like you were just waiting for the enemy to attack you to counter and half of the time the counters didn't even start. Ac rouge and 4 had very easy combat that wasn't rewarding in the slightest, but at least it wasn't as clunky as the original 4 games. AC3 had pretty good combat, still suffered from being unrewarding but it was smooth and had a lot more emphasis on actual skill. AC syndicate had comical combat that killed just felt out of place (as did the entire game), Unity was a more refined version of the combat system from syndicate and it felt nice to fight enemies in that game. AC odyssey, origins and Valhalla are obviously the most different but also the most fun, they're smooth, there's a lot of variety in how you can fight enemies. The main downside is that the enemies in odyssey are just incredibly tankey and take ages to kill, although I think this is because they wanted you to use abilities more and wanted you to build up a lot of adrenaline. Valhalla just had bland abilities that weren't too noteworthy, although the variety in weapon choice and effects was nice. origins was the perfect AC combat for me, you could have 2 different bows active at once that you could swap between and the same with weapons. The only real downside was that it wasn't possible to remove the shield and replace it with a weapon of some sort.
    If you read this far, I started off mad that he put the 3 most recent ones at the bottom, then realised I had written a lot and deleting it would be stupid, so I finished writing it. Thanks for reading through my rant though if you did

      I absolutely agree with you. Previous games were too dumb when it comes to combat system. I've played the whole franchise except Revelations and Origins (tried Origins for a few hours but then I thought that deserts are not for me.). Odyssey is the best for me. If you make a proper build, you can assassinate by one strike. And since the enemies detect you more easily, it makes odyssey way more "assassin" than the previous games. (As I said I played Origins for a few hours so I cannot say the difference). I had hoped that Valhalla would go like that but because of shitty nostalgists they changed back to an easier combat. But probably that might not be the only reason. I enjoyed Valhalla though, at least I had a great journey in medieval England as a Viking.
      Brotherhood was the first ac I played (I had read the novel of AC2 before that but because of some problems with AC2, I had to try Brotherhood first.). I miss it sometimes thanks to Jesper Kyd (ruclips.net/video/HKsNepQ2DwE/видео.html) (ruclips.net/video/bbxtiTtvOW0/видео.html) and my interest for the Renaissance Italy (and for the Borgia family), but then I remember how the combat system sucks (as well as controlling. I say Ezio to go right but then he jumps to the exact opposite side, sigh...) and some missions are just shitty designed (ones like "tail that guy", or optional objects like "don't take damage", "don't let them detect you", "only walk on rooftops" etc.) Some people might say "but it was just perfect for its time." no it was not. I can understand the control problem when parkouring, but the other things are just some shitty mistakes. There were games with much better gameplays than Ac's those times.

    How I would rank the combat of the AC games I played from best to worst:
    1. *Valhalla* - I personally love all the abilities, weapon variety, archetype variety, and the stun attacks. The combat is not too slow but is still challenging and very satisfying
    2. *Odyssey* - Yeah I know a lot will disagree, but personally I have a couple loadouts, 1 being a warrior loadout, so I can kill enemies pretty quickly. I love all the abilities, weapons, and the challenge.
    3. *Origins* - It's pretty similar to Odyssey, but with less abilities, so in my opinion it's slightly worse. Still, I do love the weight of Bayek's fighting, and it is still challenging and overall really good.
    4. *Unity* - Definitely the best of the classic AC combat mechanics. It's challenging, you have many moves, and it looks amazing and realistic. Still, overall I am more a fan of the RPG combat mechanics of the newer games.
    5. *Black Flag* - It looks really cool, and you have many moves, but it's way too easy. You can just press square constantly to kill an entire army. But you can make the combat cool and interesting with _intrinsic motivation_
    6. *Syndicate* - Definitely my least favorite. The weapon options were so boring, it lacked move variety, and it doesn't even look cool.
    I have also played AC II and AC III, but I didn't play them much, and it was a while ago, so I don't know how I'd rank them exactly, but probably close to Black Flag.

    Of course you favour pressing a button on and on and praise it like there's no tomorrow instead of taking 2 minutes to understand (or search in the dictionary) what a build is. Sticking points in the warrior tree does not mean that you've upgraded your character. What you should've done was focus on the armour sets (you know, like in the other AC games) and make sure that Crit Chance and Crit Damage values are as high as they can be. That's literally it but your biased hatred for Odyssey prevented you from enjoying it. Odyssey was an amazing game, even better than Origins, and your incapability to understand it is the only fault you could ever find.

      It’s not fun having to make a build just to be able to kill someone and having to hit them 30 plus times before they die they should listen to there core supports and the people who loved the game from the beginning but it’s so fucking annoying playing against a sponge and it also takes away from the stealth because your blades don’t do shit

    • @adrianhale7231
      @adrianhale7231 3 года назад

      @@calebroberts9935 that's just it: if you make a build, a good one, you only have to hit them once or twice on hard mode. It seems that damage sponges are only present in the games owned by people who lack any interest to understand them. The previous games were way worse (damage combo...multiplier?!?! Odyssey doesn't need a multiplier when a good build kills every common enemy in 1-2 hits) but of course you 'og supporters and true fans' are too blind to see the faults of your precious ones... The beauty of Odyssey is you can play literally any way you want as long as you spend 2 minutes on building a great armor. If you like your blades and want them to slice through enemies like butter just use a complete assassin armor with high crit chance and crit damage (T7 has some great builds for this!) and I asure you won't have any problem. It's not THAT hard to understand....

    AC1’s counter grabs 🔥

  • @arvidduekilde1647
    @arvidduekilde1647 3 года назад +1

    The best thing about ac1 is that most hits happens on the enemies defence their swords. You feel like you weaken their defence to allow for a hit on their body and the enemy can only take one or a few of those hits. This ads so much to the feeling of realism and consequence without sacrificing swiftness or difficulty and I do not understand why they didn't keep this.
    My ideal system would be based on the ac1 system but with more weapon variety and enemy variety. Enemy AI would also be more aggressive and idealy able to combine their efforts so bigger groups would be an exponentially bigger threat, and in this way encourage stealth.
    Instead of being levelbased the difficulty should be based on the players skill. Combos, dodges, parrys and counters should require precise timing and the better you are at timing the bigger window you're allowed to deal the most damage afterwards.
    Also the more difficult the enemy the more precise timing would be required making "boss" enemies actually more challenging and not just more time consuming.
    And if you mess up the timing of say a dodge you're punished with the next attack being more difficult to deal with so that the enemy just like you is able to combo through you defense and allow for a hit.
    This would also allow for realistic gear stats. Heavier armor gives you more protection so you can take more damage but your defense is weakened because the armor slows you making the timing of dodges, counters and so harder

    Origins is my personal favorite. With the lack of abilities and the weightiness of each hit (both in damage number and visual effect) make it very immersive, you feel like there's a real danger of getting hit. But you don't feel hopeless because Bayek has a lot of defensive options like the shield and dodging and no stamina. You have to pay attention to the enemies animations and positions to come out on top, just like how things go through your brain in irl fights.
    Hitbox system can be great for AC game, Ubisoft just has to balance out the speed, animations, and challenges of combat encounters. Valhalla made a lot of good changes, and I hope that they'd stick with the principles used in designing it.

    This guy seems to dislike every single aspect of the newer games. From parkour system (agreed) to protagonist (somewhat agree) to combat system (don't really agree), all the older games are ranked higher.
    Personally, I feel that the combat system in each game is very reflective of the context of the game. Just because it's an Assassin's Creed game does not mean that we are playing an assassin. Bayek and Alexios/Kassandra weren't assassins, and I think the combat system reflects that really well (no insta counter kill and more drawn out fights).
    The three games I'd say had the most issues with the combat system are (in no particular order):
    1. Syndicate. Lack of weapon type and insta counter kills. Given the context and background, these should have been in.
    2. Odyssey. Enemy level and HP scaling. Should have been more like Origins. The "superpowers" aren't an issue given that the player character is as close to a human/Isu hybrid as we'll ever get.
    3. Black Flag. The tools in the game were outright broken. Given that it's set in the pirate era, the Unity or Origins combat system might have worked better.
    Just my two cents. Peace.

    Completely disagree on the Brotherhood combat's placement. I mean, like you said, isn't a combat system that's so easy you it's easier than doing stealth too fundamentally flawed to be at the top spot? There's literally no reason to do stealth in Brotherhood unless you're forced to, because combat is faster/easier. Having a smaller healthbar also wouldn't help because 1) You can't die anyway and 2) It's so rare for enemies to even get any combos on you at all. I also don't think its immersive to be a one-man army who can mow down 50 people on his own. Ezio is supposed to be a great fighter, but he's not a fucking superhero. Unity and AC1 do a far better job at making you feel like a skilled fighter while still being realistic and challenging. Brotherhood's combat is just a shallow power fantasy,

    unpopular opinion: new latest ac games have the best combat system.
    Between brotherhood and rogue the system wasnt a combat system. It was more like a takedown system. Just counter and chain assassination 90% of the time. 1 Enemy, 10 Enemys or 100… doesnt matter its like no difference. 1 and 2 were little bit better but also you could just counter and even if the enemy is at full health you can kill them almost instantly by timing your attacks.
    The latest games have challenging combat. 1 Enemy is easy but 100 impossible. You have to activly stay in a fight and think what you next move is.
    The new combat just looks like crap. Unity had a good mix. Hard combat with active fighting but also cool animations. Hands down ac3 system with valhalla look is also worse that valhalla combat with ac3 animations

If games don’t boundaries of what people are comfortable playing then they’ll get stale and feel like the same story is being told over and over again people need to feel something whether it’s sadness,disgust,distress,happiness,
    Squeamish,shocked,anger,confusion and assassins creed has always been a power fantasy for casual gamers and that’s ok but the narrative needs to compensate.

    i'd place origins and valhalla over rogue and black flag. i am a souls player 1st and foremost and i respect that i have to play around enemy archetypes and adapt my playstyle. fighting the man at arms in valhalla is far more engaging than both black flag and rogue put together. with other enemies in valhalla they dont recover after a good parry but the MAA does. even the banneret adapts to what i do and i can respect the effort made to make the combat engaging. the early ac games had shit combat in comparison because of one shot counters and disarming the heavies made them trivial instead of a challenge. brotherhood and revelations are also trivial because of combos and unity is amazing but a bit too slow for my tastes.
    the only bad thing about valhalla is that animation cancelling is too op. if i mistime a parry or commit an extra r1 i can quickly dodge out of my mistake instead of being punished like i would in origins

    Valhalla has a good system but there is a big lack of implementation. The whole movement is more like a dark souls thing. Dark souls has a good combat system but it is based ob fighting huge monsters. You cant use that combat for an ac game. The system works but it looks rediciolous. Witcher 3, ghost of tsushima and even ac unity give you the same combat options but look a lot better because there is a better implementation. Its like a mortal combat system in gta. Good system but doesnt fit the game

    I feel like if ubisoft hadn't rushed out unity it could have a so much better it really could have been an amazing experience I still really enjoy the game but I feel like if ubisoft had let the programmers have another 6-8 months to fix the bugs and I think the story could have been better but honesty i think the game was great after it was patched

    My favourite one is definitely AC Origins. I just think it is way more diversed than any other. And it really takes skill to survive larger groups of people or to beat a boss. (btw, if you think its not so hard, turn up the difficulty)

    In my humble opinion I still think Unity has the best combat and Syndicate undoubtedly has the worst one and when I played it I felt like the enemies were punching bags due to the way our character fights with them lol

    Unity has a really good combat, if was more polished and with some features of AC3, like use enemies as a shield against bullets, it would be so better than the rpg stuff.

    I think the earlier ac combat is better bc if you really think about it an assassin should be fast and alot better at fighting and using weapons then other people and I think the old fighting system really showed the fast kills and smooth movements that an assassin should have ion know tho that's just what I think

    Every time I hear youtubers talk about Odyssey I'm always baffled because evidently I did not play the same game as them...

    Its hilarious how the spear is supposed to be a powerful, reality bending Isu tech but cant assassinate an enemy just 1 level above you, first try

    I got odyssey recently (have only played the AC2 games and odyssey) and I personally have not found the enemies too spongy but I can see it at times but cheers good video

    My list would be the same but I would have odyssey as the worst cause of syndicate hand to hand combat which I found kind of satisfying

    Great video. I agree on most of your picks but I was finally able to find someone who could put my thoughts about Unity's combat into words, it was because of the input lag that makes it lower on the scale for me.

    The combat is only fun in Syndicate when an enemy charges at you and you pull your fucking gun out and shoot them dead.

    The RPG assassins creed games work well as RPG games but don’t work well as true assassins creed games

    The only way this list could be more wrong is if you had put Black Flag as number 1.
