The one thing I loved about the very first Assassin's Creed game was the challenge to sneakily assassinate just the evil bad guy from above in each chapter and then escape with minimal carnage. The original bad guys in AC1 were legitimately evil.

I feel like that was the classic games' worst aspect, story wise.
It's supposed to be a gray conflict, each side with their ideologies and flaws, but the Templars from AC1 up to Ezio's Trilogy are legit like cartoon villains. Thankfully in some future games they gave the Templars more nuance and understanding rather than just being cliché le evil bad guys

  • @TranquilAssassin

The AC Unity stealth kills were honestly peak. They were well animated and FELT precise. Like Arno knew exactly the weak spots to target, as an assassin should. Definitely wish they brought back that variety of both running kills and stealth kills and different animations for each. Also you gotta be able to manually engage and retract the blade. That's just a staple of any assassins creed game imo. Combat in the older games was simple but it worked for what it was at the time. I think they nailed it in Unity if only they offered more variety in enemies and smoothed out the gameplay and animations for combat. Overall Ubisoft should have stuck with the Unity systems and built off of them to make them smoother.

Unity was great in that the first few hours Arno was a mess, i couldn't control his parkour and his combat was atrocious, but over time he got better and better and by the end of the game his parkour & combat skills were second to none. i felt the same way with Mirage, though the animations were more clunky than in Unity, but at first Basim was getting bodied by 1 or 2 guards, by the end, and by utliziing all his skills in combat, he was wiping the floor with entire squads.

Unity flopped because it had a disastrous launch technically and because the story was incredibly boring. AC3 felt epic because they interwove it with American Revolution and Conor was integral to that struggle. For some baffling reason with Unity they set it against the backdrop of the French Revolution and then....... ignored it completely to tell a pound store version of Romeo and Juliet.
BUT in terms of the parkour and the assassinations it was probably best in class.

The 1st one was tedious and repetitive but I thought it was cool and interesting how they tied in historical events and figures into the game, especially so in the AC2 games. The novelty wore off FAST for me. Their adherence to history or geography is practically a joke. They've even given up the pretense in recent releases. On top of that there is the lame scifi plot which means you are *never* playing an assassin. Instead you're playing some dork called Desmond or whatever from the future playing the assassin. It's a completely needless and jarring disconnect from the game proper. They should reboot this series and dump all the scifi shit entirely. Just have some mysteries around the place, like you might find in RDR2 and leave it at that.

There doesn't need to be an adherence to actual history because this is still a Sci-Fi story, it's not our world and it never was. Even AC1 had Sci-Fi elements and if you disagree with it being that way then it means you were never a fan of the series and should be looking for a History Simulator of some sort because that's not Assassin's Creed.

It's wild to think they haven't innovated on environmental gameplay. The crowd options in AC2 made you feel so stealthy and they just forgot how to try on the stealth options. Last time they tried was Unity with more interiors to navigate and the disguise option. Even AC1 had the prayer hands. Imagine if they'd thrown all those stealth options into this game, with some environmental discretion options to interact with the world which causes a distraction or obfuscates or gives you access to something else.

The characters can be a bit extra, and I think Jake hit the nail right on the head when he said the assassinations didn't feel right. That's exactly my biggest problem in the game. Assassinations never felt locked to an animation. Like in the older games if you walked up to a guard you could nonchalantly stab him in the neck and keep walking away and it felt seemless. I know they could fix this and make it better if we let them know these problems with the games. They listened to what we wanted from a new assassins creed, we should see how much they'll listen to actual fans of the franchise. If you are having problems with Basims momentum while running. One great tip to solve this is to go into your control settings and tinker with them. By default the sprint on controller is binded to the left analogue stick and is set to toggle to sprint but you can change this very easily. It has the option to hold to sprint instead of toggle this way you always know that when you are holding the button down you are sprinting. For me as well I binded sprint to the right trigger which made the whole experience of running through the city feel far more satisfying. There are lots of settings you can change to make things feel more like the older games. Plus one bonus fact which I have appreciated is the amount of animations both combat finishers and assassination animations that are taken directly from AC unity since most people forget that these games are made using the Anvil Engine. Overall loved this game I agree it is a middle ground between the different genres of games in the series

9:40 I think it's mainly because most of the time Basim goes for the stomach or chest while assassinating someone and after that he throws them to the ground as everyone looks while Ezio mostly went for the neck with a quick stab and by the time the target slowly fell to the ground, Ezio could go into hiding in the crowd again. It's obvious what's more satisfying here and who's the best Assassini of all time.

Except the combat system is absolute shit. It doesn't give you enough time to recognise whether you have to parry or dodge. By the time you've seen the colour indicator, you've already been hit, and the parry mechanic in general is unforgiving. I get that we want a challenge, but it's flawed. Completely sapped the fun out of the game for me. When on a mission to liberate Ali or whatever his name is, I was doing great until one guard saw me. Just a regular guard kicked my arse for the reasons I stated above. I had to turn it off. Unity had the best combat by far. It was challenging when surrounded, but one guard isn't going to beat you, and so he shouldn't. The parrying also felt good. Playing this after finishing Spider-Man 2 really showed how bad Ubisoft are. I want a refund!

I believe for an Assassin’s Creed game to be great, we need to really be put in the protagonists shoes in the setting they’re in & the atmosphere has to be realistic. For me, the previous games that have amazed me were in simple connections that the games do because of how well put together the entire world was. Example: AC2 as Ezio you would get random mini games to hug or handshake someone mid cutscene creating more immersion with the player & character, AC3 when you would do a viewpoint music would start playing as you moved up to the final moment when you synch, Or Ac4 as you get off the boat to a new island the camera kinda moves off center to show you the island & all the objectives you can complete on it! As a old fan, those are minor experiences I recall gave me much enjoyment to the assassin’s creed franchise instead of a mindless open world, or repetitive side quests that seem like homework rather than adventure 😅.

Those long, drawn-out notes feel suspenseful, which is fitting when you hear it in the early stages of the game as the war is building up. Those notes also have a courageous sound, and even a sort of depressing sound, all of which are fitting for both the American Revolution and for Connor's story. I get chills every time it plays.

I like Unity best when it comes to those quick hidden blade kills, you can toss a smoke bomb and just go to work on four guys then disappears, though I never thought it was realistic to just one-tap someone like that. Here it looks like Basim is putting a lot of force behind his strikes which gives more killing power. It also seems he takes a moment to consider how and where to strike which might speak to his inexperience being an assassin. Plus this is AC1-era hidden blade which I think has to be engaged before you use them. Overall that gives a little bit of a lag which breaks the momentum. I've been looking forward to this one, might gives it a whirl and see.

Initially started this series with AC2 and absolutely fell in love. Somewhere in between Brotherhood and Revelations I played AC1 and thats when I trully became enveloped into this series as a whole. Very much like yourself, I feel the same way on your key notes. Getting to play Origins with Bayek was fun and nice to see the key roots of where the Assassins come from, but I feel like that game (for all its glory) pushed us in the wrong direction with this series. I feel a turn in the tide with Mirage. I’m going in with very little expectations but from what i’ve seen, I’m actually already enjoying it. People say Basim is slow but really I think he works somewhat better than Altair and Ezio. What made their movements look more appealing and fluid is when we learned to break the movement by using side and back ejects properly. I remember the first time seeing what AC2 parkour was actually capable of and it was so cool because it made it look like there was a learning curve to movement and really distinguish how you play. Basim has flashier moves but not having those side and back ejects are what limit him. Overall, I love this series but ever since Unity its been all over the place with what was good and bad and honestly I just hope this “return to roots” is what gets us back to the games we love

Just picked up Mirage with the end-of-year sale and actually really enjoying it. Being from the same generation of gaming as Jake and Falcon (allegedly for the bird) I have very similar tastes so I must have seen this review at least three times. I absolutely love the aesthetics and design of ancient Islamic architecture and find this recreation of Baghdad beautiful. The colours, ceramic tiles patterns, overall warmth, gardens, and markets (and I love how the Assassins bureaus are the same as in the very first AC). The smaller contained scope feels really nice, but wish the characters had more time to get us more involved and attached to them. I so wish it could control like Unity (especially having replayed it just before Mirage) and give Basim fluid assassinations like Arno depending on your momentum. Glad there is a double assassination mechanic that is not the teleporting thing, didn't use it once apart from the tutorial moment. Give me back a bow instead.
Here's hoping they could find the sweet spot in scope and size somewhere between Mirage and Origins with the tight parkour of Unity and combat of Origins (or closer to Ghost of Tsushima) would be doing it for me.
Also wish they would just drop the Isu bit but that's a personal thing, it just doesn't work for me.

Having enemies that could drop a smoke bomb and do their best to run away and you can track them down before they leave but if they do, they return stronger etc but actually have names etc would make the concept of murdering pointless enemies a little more focused and interesting. Meh, still getting it. I don’t trust skillup review at all. The things some folks are complaining about are what makes AC AC.. the original AC games were “repetitive” and simple. Like AC II was rinse and repeat throughout the game. Everyone wanted to go back to that style of game and leave the RPG style and now they’re still complaining.
I’ve had every AC and I’m sure I’ll find it fun and sell well. The history aspect has always been my and many others fave part of AC. Copping Ubisoft+ for this and the crew. Very excited
Just compare the replies here to r/assassinscreed it’s clear this is what hardcore fans want and who ubi are appealing to here. It’s not going to create new fans who already disliked the series, but for those of us who have been playing this series for 16 years it’s a great entry.

I liked Mirage overall, mostly for the story and how it ties into Valhalla and it gives you more backstory on Basim. The game has it's problems for sure, and it's a bit simple and basic compared to the last couple of games. Except for a few very short "side quests", theres not a lot to do besides collecting the usual things and doing a few side missions from a job board. The story is a lot more "down to earth" than previous titles but imo if you are into the AC lore and universe it's nice knowing more about Basims backstory.
    Spoilers below
When you see how Valhalla ends, i'm pretty sure Basim will be the new main character you play as in the modern world, so it's nice to know what hes been through and done

Unity might be my favorite. I didn't like Origins but thought Odyssey was decent. While I'm glad they went back to smaller maps. The chosen location of this one is meh. Idk I think the desert makes a terrible stealth environment. It feels like they just wanted to reuse assets from origins and Odyssey.

This sounds like I'd love it. I loved Origins and Odyssey precisely for the reasons traditional AC fans hate them. I hated Valhalla. But I do agree with the point that "new style" of AC was really big and burdensome and changing gear all the time gets annoying once you figure out the in game economics. I really don't like the original AC style but a hybrid might actually be a happy medium between the two. I will buy it on sale.

I used to love Ubisoft as a company back in the late 2000’s/early 2010’s because of AC and Far Cry 3. They haven’t been quite the same since and I haven’t played an Ubisoft game since Odyssey. However I wish the fans would actually pay attention I’m tired of seeing people say odyssey Valhalla and Origins was not ac games when they were. The series has always been about the assassins templars and the Isu. Origins was meant to show the start of the assassins, Odyssey was meant to show the start of the Templars while Valhalla was meant to give us more on Isu. It all tied in the story so well for me and that’s what the series has always been for me is the story.

Thanks Jake, as another long time fan, I totally get what you mean with the overall feel of just sprinting around, the parkour weight and level design, using the hidden blade in low profile, etc. Like yeah while Mirage is bringing back these classic elements, it's still made in the newer games' engine, which is what's giving it that 'off' feel you're describing. Even looking at this small clip of the parkour at 10:08, you can just see the way Basim is snapping to the next object, and without playing I can already tell it just looks wonky lol

I'm fan of both the old and new and I just wanted to say that the next AC game if they decide to please those that only enjoy the old then it's the it might get use a different engine and framework since Mirage was meant to be a Valhalla DLC, it might feel right then.
To be honest I've stopped caring, there's too much conflict between fans of the old and the new.

I haven't had this much fun with an AC game since Unity. The biggest problem with it is how short it is and how there's no post game content. Which in a way is a good thing. Unlike Odyssey and Valhalla, after I beat Mirage, I wanted more.

  • @JayFight

So I played AC Mirage and just to let everyone know I am not a speed player, I tend to take forever to play a game and in most cases I never finish the main story with over 200 hrs played.
I played AC Mirage and in 5 days with about 40 hrs played I completed everything, all collectibles, side missions, trophies, ubisoft connect challenges and rewards, and the main story.
I don't really see replayablity for it either.
It was a fun game with a decent story but it was short, I feel it would have been better with 2 more areas of equal size and content to the base game because as I am a slow game player most people will probably beat it in 20 to 30 hrs.

I’ve enjoyed all of the AC games. You knew that once they killed off Desmond that things would have to change. A large part of the enjoyment of those older ones was the connection between the modern character with the historical one. I enjoy the RPG ones and I’m enjoying Mirage. Yes, Basim feels a little slow but he’s not a warrior like the last characters. And Altair wasn’t exactly fast either. Ezio and Connor were only a little better. I honestly think expectations were to recreate what we all felt with the first game when it launched and you just can’t recreate that. Mirage is a solid edition by a smaller studio under Ubisoft. Their recreation of Baghdad and nods to the OG AC is a nice trip down memory lane

But I personally never met anyone who said it was part of what made it great, all my friends said they should remove the animus ans just follow the assassin in the time they lived!
