As someone who lives in Alaska, oil pan heaters are very common. Its called winterization. Very necessary when the weather can get to -50°. Wait till you see our parking lots that have outlets at every space. A lot of tourists think alaskan vehicles are electric when they see em all plugged in 😂

Ah, memories. Once when I was destitute and homeless, someone gave me a free Volvo if I could get it to start. Which was not the biggest problem, it was just the transmission interlock, I bypassed it and it started right up. The biggest problem was that it had been rear ended which destroyed all the lights. It also killed the headlights somehow, no idea why. I affixed trailer lights to the bumper, went to wire them in, and discovered that someone had snipped that entire part of the wiring harness off. No idea why. Anyway, I'm homeless, got $20 to my name, very limited tools, no multimeter. So, I wire them all to toggle switches that I mounted in a piece of cardboard and taped to the dash. Got fancy and had a three-way toggle with a blinker relay for turn signals. I had to screw a giant button to the brake pedal to get those lights working. Did this all in an Autozone parking lot, I might add. Lived in that thing for like 6 months and put 10,000 miles on it.

6:55. I've actually seen that on cars in the northern states where it gets much colder. The plug hands out of the front grill. Owner takes an extension cord, plugs it into the plug from the grill. Heating pad warms up the oil pan and oil, while your eating breakfast, getting ready for work, or whatever. Makes the cold start a lot less harsh on the engine, and you don't have to wait as long for the vehicle to warm up and the oil to start flowing properly, as it helps the process. Still would need to let it heat up to operating temp so the metal parts can expand properly. But overall if setup properly I don't see any harm. As long as it doesn't touch moving parts. Short out anything else it may touch. It seems useful if that's a problem you deal with.

In my aviation mechanic days, I was the primary focal for doing wiring/electrical jobs.
    1. Nobody else had the patience/or enough understanding to go through a wiring diagram that sometimes stretched through 13 pages of 11x17in paper.
    2. Nobody wanted to touch it, being afraid to short something out or get zapped.
it was quite satisfying in the end, when you're updating an older small airplane with more modern avionics, and you end up with a ton of dead wires that you cleared out, left over from several previous avionics changes.

On the modern jets, the electrical system packs a wallop, but my bread and butter at that time was in General Aviation (Cessna 172s, Beech Duchess, as high as Cessna 414), so i worked with 12 to 24 volt systems. Though it would still tickle a bit if you touched the wrong wire by accident.

But I will say that they become more rare on with newer car . With old diesel truck in some place that you couldn’t plug the truck you had to lights up a toilet paper roll full gas under the oil pan if you whanted to start it in a cold morning 😂

A rodent ate into the wiring of my BMW years ago - that was a $700 fix. If rodents can do that sort of damage to a 12V system, imagine what sort of damage they would do to an EV with their high voltage systems. Probably would have more visible fried rats around the car, I suppose, but even partially chewed but still functioning high voltage cables will be a major safety problem. I wouldn't want to be in a car with a 700V system with shorts in it.

So, the magnum with a hellcat. That guy was in progress when you pulled up a clip. He could have had a very detailed home-drawn schematic he was using for that spaghetti mess he had. He mentioned he was preparing to loom it after he got everything routed. (not how I would do it, but if it worked for him, I can't fault it) Also, he mentioned that he "tacked in" a steering shaft, this is very common to do just to get something to your dino appointment. It isn't permanent, but He needed it to hold together just for one dino session and then, once returned home, he'd final weld it. I love seeing the usual butchery, but, in that case, I'd say hold judgement until you see the finished product. It may be MUCH nicer than you think since you were seeing it mid-process.

One thing I learned from working as a mechanic, Wurth has a great lubricant called HHS 5000, and what one of the senior mechanics said, mice absolutely detest it for some reason. So if you have a rodent problem, just spray it here and there to make them stay away

12:15 Get a cat. It works. I have no rodents in my place but you get the occasional cockroach. The other night I saw one land on the wall and it kept flying around. The cat was on it. He saw, he came, he conquered. Basically he waited until it got low enough then swatted it. It then tried to run away. He then swatted it again. After a few hits, he picked it up and held it for a while then dropped it . Rinse and repeat a few times and the roach ended up dead laying on its back (still intact). He's learned not to eat them. It took him less than a minute to kill that thing.
12:51 That's scary. I like extra gadgets but with mine, there is an aux deep cycle in the back with a voltage sensitive relay. This has a fused direct connection to the primary battery. I then run over 10 extra circuits (each fused via an addition distribution board). In my setup, I tend to be drawing at least 3 Amps continuously (dash cams / GPS tracker, USB chargers, etc ) up to about 25 Amps (LED spotlights, better cabin light, etc ) all of the auxiliary battery so my primary cranking battery doesn't go flat.

About the cars... yeah, electronics are very tricky, we got a car at home, doesn't start and we've looked and looked for the problem, spark plugs, fuses, battery, distributor, ECU, car still didn't run, only cranks.

Back in the 1990s, I self-installed a Crutchfield car alarm out of yearning to protect and safeguard my '91 Geo Prizm with a sweet (based on my revenue stream at the time) Alpine CD / tape adapter deck.
I got more than a few notes from my neighbors because I had unwisely decided not to install the ground wire on some static piece of the car's chassis, but rather took this stranded wire and stuck it under my driver's side seat.
    Just why ignore electrical, brothas.
