In the Eysturoyartunnilin, there is a radio station that you can tune into that plays music made from the construction sounds (I think it is the construction sounds) of the tunnel. so Drill & Blast music is even more accurate.
The Faroese government will build a tunnel to connect to 1200 people, but the British government keeps saying that it isn't worth bothering building a tunnel to the isle of Wight which has over 140000 people.
The Isle of Wight ferries are particularly terrible at the moment, so there's never been a better time to push for a tunnel, apart from the fact the the UK is skint and we can't afford new infrastructure. I'm all for a tunnel as long as the hovercraft keeps running.
Just get the people on the isle of Wight to not vote against a tunnel then. It also takes just 10 minutes by hovercraft which leaves every 30 minutes hardly comparable to the hour plus mentioned for ferry's in the video.
Okay, those tunnel construction costs make _WAY_ more sense knowing the cost for the ferry service. If a year of ferry operation costs as much as 500m of tunnel it starts to look feasible over the long run, particularly with the increased reliability of the tunnels. And when you think about it, by the time a tunnel pays for itself, you'd probably also have needed to buy a whole new ferry.
To be fair, depreciation of the ferry is probably included in the figure, so buying a new one is accounted for. But still, you're very right. If it saves that much money annually, it makes perfect sense
Some napkin math indicates that the tunnel would cost a bit over 14 dollars a day per person over 30 years... Which does sound pretty close to a ferry ticket now that you mention it!
Don't forget, however, that the tunnels also have upkeep costs; maintenance, electricity, pumps, etc. So you'd need to subtract the tunnel upkeep from the ferry upkeep before comparing how long it'd take for it to pay itself off in this manner.

Here's the thing. This highlights the difference between logistical investment for purpose, Vs for profit. Now over time those tunnels may require additional funds for repairs and renovations. However, they're indispensable and a positive asset to the country. Their value isn't purely monetary. They weren't built with money making specifically in mind. It's a fantastic infrastructure investment. Opening up the isles to function more as a combined territory. Speed and availability of transportation are the main contributes of a functional logistical system. If it had been the US they'd have built airfields on every island because it was cheaper. If it was the UK they'd have merely expanded the existing airport with additional runways because that'll fix the issue somehow. If it was China, they'd have built a better (yet unnecessary) port system to better connect the island chain. All these other approaches would have factored in financials directly as opposed to indirectly. Because they cannot see infrastructure as something that needn't turn a profit. They are incapable of looking at an economic project as a positive economic drain. Sometimes things that cost the government money, especially over time. Are a good thing. It stops money pooling and stagnating in public funds. Ongoing costs can actually be an economic net benefit. Those tunnels will require staff for maintenance. Roadies, sparks, engineers for the pump system, painters. What have you. Now, those individuals are civil servants. The upkeep and maintenance of those tunnels is important don't get me wrong. But it's also a positive feedback loop. They get paid by the government, and that money circulates within the local economy, which in turn builds a solid foundation for shops, stores, industry. All at the local level. Which in turn brings in outside capital. Not so much foreign investment, but more so tourist and holiday money. A strong, wide, baseline civil service is the greatest hedge against inflation any country can have. Faroe also does something very clever, which although it is directly a detriment to the rest of us. They took the quick and dirty solution to the foreign investment problem. You can't buy land on Faroe as a foreigner. You can't soak up any of their assets. This keeps exploitative investment out. In exchange for no massive economic booms. Now, that's not necessarily a bad thing. No booms, also gives them a severely diminished chance of a bust. Or big downturn period. Aslong as they don't become overly reliant on tourist money. They'll weather any global financial crisis. And a level of self sufficiency where they don't have to rely on exports or private companies to handle their transportation between the islands. Means they're basically unbeholden to the greater global economic situation at any one time. Ie, it all comes back to the tunnels lads.
Good points, however the Faroese economy is also extremely reliant on salmon farming and pelagic fisheries, which could both crash at any time, and have done so in the past, leading to economic crisis

Gotta admit that is one of the most insane things ive ever heard done. If you told me yesterday, "What if Europe tried putting a roundabout in a tunnel?" id stare at you until my eyes twitch, doubting the feasibility. But here we are.
@@Nazuiko It's not particularly hard or weird, it's obviously cheaper to build one tunnel that can connect three islands than three seperate tunnels between each. And when you have three roads that meet you need some sort of intersection and roundabouts are the most efficient form of intersection if you aren't limited by space.

In Norway we have a lot of ferries and also a lot of undersea tunnels. The ferries are often operated by the county and subsidised by the state. One of the ways tunnels get funded is that if the county replaces a ferry with a tunnel, the state will continue paying the ferry subsidy. Some tunnels are financed basically entirely through that together with the tolls (equivalent to the ferry ticket).
It makes sense to keep building tunnels once you've started and have the tools, people, processes and expertise. It seems we often do "one off" projects and reinvent the wheel each time.
The Drill and Blast music joke is the best joke to come out of HAI in a long time. Not to say the jokes aren't usually good, this is just the best one.

Very cool. Iceland has quite a few tunnels to connect parts of the island and avoid long detours around the mountains (and in and out of all the fjords). It's nice to see a country invest in infrastructure...
The tourism industry in the Faroe Islands is growing. People do indeed go on road trips. You can also buy some very nice wool sweaters as souvenirs. Or just wool yarn for your knitting hobby.

I disagree on the chinese bit. They would have built all the tunnels at once with too much capacity and no chance of breaking even.
@@ReginOlasen Thats true. And over reliance on any singular industry. Particularly ones with finite or seasonal resources prone to over-abuse. Is an issue.
The music in the video was a little too loud. This was very interesting! Thanks for making this!
DnB has new meaning in my brain now. Thank you.
I drove thru some of these tunnels last summer, I HIGHLY recommend the Faroe Islands, the most beautiful country in the world imo
*_Fun Fact_*

I want the drill and blast song as a stand alone video.
I'm gonna need a ten hour version of that drill and blast song for the next time I need to cram an entire semester of studying into a single all nighter.
I am now planning a road trip to the faroe islands and will be listening to only drill and blast the whole time
The Drill and Blast bit has to be one of the funniest jokes in this channel. Good job to whoever came up with that.
Drill and Blast sounds AWESOME
Whoever you hired to make drill and blast deserves a raise
the drill&blast is the greatest thing i have ever seen
1:34 Did he just say the Great State of New Jersey? 😂
Phil Murphy: “we’re from Jersey baby and you’re not”
Yeah that one surprised me, especially with all of the times he's dissed Newark Liberty Airport.
Typo in the script, for sure.
Let's just blame Ben
in case anyone is wondering, the names of the islands are very traditional. they are called "north island, sounth island, west island and care to make a guess on the last one?" propper old fashion scandinavian naming system.
@@TheRedBaronHP im not gonna watch the video again, but there for sure was a north island. west island was an assumpion based on patterns. could have been the name of the tunnel though, not the island
is that eagle cross-eyed? 2:27
No its american

Drill and blast needs more coverage. Also: Aimy needs to cover the next tunneling.
Planning session:
"Let's do that crossing with an underwater roundabout!"
"But why?"
"Because we can!"
"Good point."
Gotta admit that is one of the most insane things ive ever heard done.
If you told me yesterday, "What if Europe tried putting a roundabout in a tunnel?"
id stare at you until my eyes twitch, doubting the feasibility.
Someone had a ton of fun with that drill&blast animation ^^
Please finish Drill and Blast and release it!
Back in the 50s, my grandfather was a teacher in both Gásadalur and the neighbouring town of Bøur, alternating every other week. As this was way before the tunnels were built, he got back and forth by literally just hiking across the mountain every Sunday.
I plan to retire at the end of 2025 at 62 after 36 years in Telecom as a sales engineer. My wife will retire in May 2026 and she's loving life! But walking away from a good income stream and building the nest egg to living from the nest egg is a scary proposition couple with the alarming recession and CPI report
I feel your pain mate, as a fellow retiree, I'd suggest you look into passive index fund investing and learn some more. For me, I had my share of ups and downs when I first started looking for a consistent passive income so I hired an expert advisor for aid, and following her advice, I poured $30k in value stocks and digital assets, Up to 200k so far and pretty sure I'm ready for whatever comes.
My advice: for newbies to grow financially this year, invest. Saving is good, but investing elevates your finances. Why newbie make huge losses on trade is because investing without proper guidance can lead to mistakes and losses. that will stop you from trading, this has been one of the biggest problem to new traders, I've learned this from my own experience
Tracy Britt Cool Consulting was my hope during the 'bear summer' last year. I made so many mistakes but also learned so much from it, and of course from Tracy.
I'm surprised that this name is being mentioned here, I stumbled upon one of her clients testimonies on CNBC news last week...
I keep hearing a lot about Mis. Tracy Britt Cool Consulting O'Reilly, she must be really good
About 10 years ago we were on a cruise which took in the Faroe islands. We hired a car for the day and did a road trip to the most northerly part we could reach (Viðareiði). We used 1 sea tunnel which was illuminated like a discotheque, but the other mountain tunnels were the “suicide” types with single track with passing places. Playing chicken with an oncoming pair of headlights was somewhat bum clenching but I thoroughly recommend the experience of driving through these beautiful islands with their amazing feats of engineering.
B1M did a video on this a while back. I think he stood around the round about. But the thought of being under there creeped me out. I'd be on a boat.

Everyone talking about the Drill & Blast music, but did anyone notice he blasted through Wendover Productions?
Interesting

Came here from nebula just to see how the ad read and transition would happen on RUclips. It did not disappoint
Today's Fact: In 2021, researchers found evidence of a 'hot Jupiter' exoplanet that appears to be shedding its atmosphere in a massive, comet-like tail.
We should build a tunnel there.
3:20 there goes the VFX department budget! It's time to do some layouts!
There goes Wendover productions' CGI budget for the next 10 years
"road tripping the faroe islands" yes please
It makes sense to keep building tunnels once you've started and have the tools, people, processes and expertise. It seems we often do "one off" projects and reinvent the wheel each time.
such a good Hai video I didn't even think about how long it's been since we've had a brick video
I never knew I wanted this, but now I want to do a Solstice Midnight sun road tour of the Faroes.
One of your best videos yet. Love the atmosphere, love the trivia, cheers. 🥂
Oh and, Drill and Blast sounds great 👍
The Drill and Blast music joke is the best joke to come out of HAI in a long time.
Not to say the jokes aren't usually good, this is just the best one.
I totally want to get an album of Sam's drill-and-blast. Make it happen!
I have found hardly any jokes on this channel funny so far. But this drill and blast gag gets a thumbs up : P
The editing on this video is 🔥
Ahhh Faroe... It was such a wonderful place to visit. Their helicopters are like public buses too, to connect to those 10 people on some island where tunnels are not worth it (yet)... Amazing!
Very cool. Iceland has quite a few tunnels to connect parts of the island and avoid long detours around the mountains (and in and out of all the fjords). It's nice to see a country invest in infrastructure...
3:25 IMA FIRIN MA LAZOR!!!
The tourism industry in the Faroe Islands is growing.
People do indeed go on road trips.
You can also buy some very nice wool sweaters as souvenirs. Or just wool yarn for your knitting hobby.
I came here for the tunnels and Half-as-Educational, but stayed for Drill&Blast. Well done :D
I need more drill and blast songs in my life.
Wow the landscape of those islands are beautiful!
We blew up a tunnel connecting Seabrook and Deer Park to Baytown here in TX. It connected maybe a quarter million people. Replaced it with a giant-ass bridge though. Tunnel caused silting in a major port area.
I laughed WAY too hard at the scene outside the office building
