  • MoonDawg Underwater Treadmill - Update Dec 14, 2013: I had to put Moon down yesterday afternoon. He was a brave loyal friend up to the end but after ten years his body just crapped out on him. As a dog with 3 "broken" legs and a failed GI system, his grasp on life had been precarious at best over the past few years. I had to leave him in a kennel for 4 days this past week while I had follow-up knee surgery. The separation along with their inability to properly administer his daily drugs bump started a chain of events which resulted in his systems failing him and loss of use of his back legs. But never once even right up to the end did he ever lose the ability to look into my eyes, focus on my soul and share that special bond that existed between us. Dr Paul came by the house and as I held Moon in my arms, he gave him the final shots and Moon Dawg slipped the surly bonds of earth, touching the face of God. A big piece of me went with him yesterday. Rest in Peace Moon Dawg

I know this is an old video but many of us would pay for instructions or prints how to make this, myself included. So many of us have aging or injured dogs which would love to be able to help their pain and recovery.

15 years and Moon is still inspiring good bois and girls all over.
You know he's waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge with so many of mine...one day we'll see them again, and none of us will hurt like we do here.

This is fantastic, you've got to post some of the build process for this. Even a sketch would be helpful! I'm researching how to build a version of this suitable for humans in a pool!

Went through the same thing with my dog Cocoa several weeks ago. I got her a swimming jacket and bought a small pool. I would hold the handles and have her swim. She was loosing the function of her back legs. I would massage her, do range of motion exercises and give her pain pills as needed. This gave her quality of life for over a year. When I read your article I know what you felt. I held her in my arms with the sun in her face and birds singing while she got her shots. The water training is excellent for animals. I work at the horse track and they do water training for the horses. Good job brother! You had that special bond.

First and foremost, I am so very sorry for your loss. I am currently trying to build something like this for my fur baby. A lot of people have recommended a baby pool but he is too big for a baby pool to be effective. So we are going to have to build as hydrotherapy is not currently available in my area due to my state being so very far behind in pet care. I am praying for a miracle. My fiancé and I have decided to use your design as a starting point for creating something. Thank you for posting this video so many years ago. My fur baby Chance has IVDD and was paralyzed in his rear end and Ive been doing absolutely everything I possibly can with him at home to help him regain function. PT 3 times daily for the last 4 weeks after 8 weeks of strict bed rest, he can now take steps unassisted. But he is super weak, his neurologist has said that he would greatly benefit from using hydrotherapy which she offers at her hospital. Unfortunately it is 3 hours away and that drive coupled with the cost of hydrotherapy 4-6 days a week would kill us especially now during this pandemic. So we are going to try and build, thanks to your amazing video, giving us hope that we can do this. Thank you so much. I hope this comment finds you safe and healthy! I truly admire the dedication you had for your baby Moon. I just know she will be waiting for you on the other side with open paws and lots of slobbery kisses!

Would you consider selling this, or do you have plans for something like it? I have a dog with Cruciate Ligament Disease in both knees, and we need to get an underwater treadmill, quick. Unfortunately, I just don't have the funds for a brand new one, but I think I could spring for a homemade one, no problem. Please let me know. Thank you.

Any chance you could add a video or comment on how you built this? My German Shepherd has hip dysplasia in both legs and elbow dysplasia in one arm and is in desperate need of this device however; they are too expensive for me to buy one and we don’t have a vet within 125 miles that offers this rehab. Anything you could provide would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!

You simply have to drive Hydraulic motor underwater with hydraulic pump over the water.

I know this is an old post but my heart still goes out to you!
My guess is this treadmill has no power unit. It looks to be powered by the dog itself. Water fills dog starts to walk to shallower area.
Just my guess . Great job , nice build.

      @@AaronMurenbeeld
Actually I should not of said I know how to built this one.
But this build is what inspired me to build a
Simplified version with pvc pipes being the rollers, set at a very slight incline.
One pipe fits inside another pipe to give you a roller bearing. When submerged in water is glides very well. So you cut down very many you need to make the overall length of your tread mill.
So you need your roller pipes as close together as you can but not touching. So if they are 1" in diameter then you need to drill a hole in hard wood 2×4 or 2x6 spaced about 1/8" inch apart from each hole. Approximately 67 times. You drill two 2x4s the same, then sandwich the pipes in between the 2x4s and since the inside pipe is cut 4 inches longer then the outer the inner pipes go into the 2x4sand the outer pipe spins freely.
I need a way to show you this will be way to long on trying to explain. It is simple and a lot of people are landscaping with the tanks I use to house the treadmill . So its not an overly ugly build sitting in your yard but very inexpensive.

@@MrPeeteboy thanks, I saw some people doing something similar. I am trying to build something now. Going to pickup a broker treadmill later this week. If I can figure out how to extend the axle. I will drive it with a washing machine belt and drive it with a washing machine motor. Then submerge the assembly in a stock tank with the motor separate d and hooked up to a gfi
