The concept comes from earlier myths and religions, and then found it's way into the bible. Big shocker, right? Same with hell, angels and demons. I heard a fundamentalist sermon which was addressing a mother's concern about going to heaven without her kids. The preacher said not to worry, God will provide for all your needs, regardless. Essentially he was saying that once you're in heaven, God will make you stop caring that your kids were in hell.
I take (took) my kids to a Unitarian church here in Washington. It was a liberal/open alternative that gave my kids a foundation in all world religions. I just felt like I needed to give them a spiritual home because they have a lot of friends in their orbit who attend evangelical mega churches & invite my kids to their very enticing events that end in alter calls. But, they also feed them, okay games & make it fun, but the end goal is to get them to accept Jesus into their hearts & it’s all the manipulative stuff they do… anyway, the structure of the Unitarian church I attend let’s me be an atheist, doesn’t push Jesus or Yahweh on my kids & is something I’ve found is a good place for our family. They also run a VBS alternative for kids that I really believe in. I just want non Christian alternatives, you know? It has worked for us.
I think it's really important to take our kids to our county's Democratic party headquarters where we can work to concentrate our values into law. Election winners make the laws and shape the judiciary. The current gerrymandering in favor of Republicans requires all the rest of us to step up and support Democrats to win elections. Because the Republicans are trying to collapse our secular government and inflict their religion on all of us. It's not right and we need to stop them. Hell would be unconstitutional. It shows you they don't understand anything. They're working for one purpose only, to make rich people richer.
If you are an atheist why would you waste your time going to a "church"?.. Take them to Disneyland. Take them to the YMCA to play. I'll never understand atheists who try to incorporate the rituals of religion into their life. If I became an atheist I wouldn't spend another second in a church. Ultimately nothing matters, then why put them through that if tomorrow we die?

I get the feeling this lovely young women is trying to recreate a belief system she can accept. That was certainly one of the steps I took until I finally gave that up as well. Fifty years later I am still a bit stunned that so many still believe any of it. Though it's still fascinating to me how people leave. I won't live to see the day that humans rely more on each other than on an invisible force beyond earth.
I agree with Lizz 100%! I have been telling the religious for as long as I can remember that even if they are right and this god does exist, that it would not be worthy of neither praise nor worship because it would be an immoral god to say the least. It is this religious belief in gods that would make otherwise good people to say, do and condone very bad things. Know this, that no matter what god you believe in, that the majority of the people on this planet do not believe what you do. They may have their own gods or they may not believe in gods at all but nonetheless whatever god you believe in your the minority who believe that. There is no god capable of convincing the masses of it's existence. By the way, if gods do not exist then they would have a really really good excuse for all their moral failings. I continue to watch these videos and other informational videos because I feel like knowledge is power and I know it will help to put other things in to help give me other ideas and automatic responses to life situations. I often questioned the “no suffering in heaven” thing with it being a place where all you do is worship. Not because it sounds boring but because you’re no longer you. If we are wiped of all suffering, then that means we will have forgotten significant things that made us who we are. We would necessarily forget family, friends, loved ones, cats, dogs…all the things that formed our existence just so that we would become mindless drones that can only find joy in god for eternity. I found that thought depressing. Our loved ones are both the source of joy and pain in our lives.
Would a person horrifically abused want to,remember their lives. The person who always felt suicidal or the person suffering unbearable physical pain. That is the flip side to,your statement. That is why there has to be a reset. Not drones,but no inclination towards violence,betrayal or greed. Give me docile any day,l am done with struggling.

My wife is a bit more quiete on the religious matter but she has chosen for her what her faith means. Ironically all the docterines /dogmas were voted and compilled in the cannon of scripture by a bunch of old farts. Great, fascinating interview so far. I'm a little over halfway through. Her dad's writing was definitely a milepost (15+ yrs ago) on my journey first out of conservative evangelicalism, then later out of xianity altogether. I have often thought that if he had been a New Testament rather than an Old Testament scholar, Pete likely would have ended up all the way out himself. Not that he doesn't generally know the (real, non sectarian) new testament scholarship but I think it's still different being immersed in it as your field. Easier to deconstruct the OT as an OT scholar but still hold onto some version of Jesus imo, when not getting as deep into the messy weeds of historical Jesus scholarship and the history of 1st C Christianity. Anyway - love her open attitude and generous spirit in this convo.
I feel where she is coming from - reminds me of a few years ago at the stage of my deconversion where I still wanted to keep Jesus, and still call myself Christian - regardless of the fact that I knew it was all nonsense. All it took was a little push from a friend of mine who had deconverted, and I finally had to admit I was no longer a Christian in any sense. A deist for a couple of years after that and then finally atheist. Never looked back. Maybe she'll eventually come to that place, or maybe not - but at least she knows that this stuff doesn't add up. If you don't at least believe that, then at that point it doesn't makes sense for you to call yourself something that the new testament writers made very clear - at least in certain terms what a Christian was. Paul wrote his portion first, then the gospels writers came after. They both differ in theology - but both seem to agree that this Jesus was bodily resurrected in some supernatural way. If you don't believe that, you can still call yourself a Christian, but the NT writers are the one's who created the rules here. Sooner or later - you have to start asking yourself if Christianity makes any sense - if you can just make an ancient belief system whatever you want it to be. To me, it's like going out and buying a classic game like Monopoly and just changing the rules to whatever you want. Kind of pointless, isn't it?

After listening to the entire interview, it seems to me that your guest is functionally an atheist, but for some reason can’t quite cross that final threshold and admit it to herself.
She doesn't have to imo. Some of us ,like Dan Barker asserts, may not take that complete leap. And that is ok if you subscribe to empathy, justice and all the humanist values that promote well being and reason. Joseph John Campbell,one of my favorite great minds, comes to mind in her approach to life. It's called freethinking or freethought. Anything other than that is harmful rigid and austere dogmatism , the antithesis of to what we've abandonedj. Our movement entails critical thinking and freedom as a species.
She is almost more pagan I’m her beliefs, not really believing in anything but energy and love and honoring earth and family. But still hanging on to an idea of Jesus which is super normal. I am more of an atheist/Pagan because I find comfort and peace in ritual and honoring the earth and I find much peace in the universe and nature. I don’t know all the answers beyond this but I’m also very okay with not knowing and it’s kind of fun having mystery!
I think you're right as well. While the interview was still very much great! There's just those you're able to truly detect what I'll say is the obvious? But everyone's past can also differ for perspectives to undergo changes, as well as handling Christianity.

I like gods who don't kill innocent children for the "sin" of being born in the "wrong" nation. I like gods who don't promote rape and condone slavery. I like gods who don't flood hmthe entire planet but keep the devil alive. I like gods who don't punish future generations for the disobedience of distant ancestors. And specially, I like gods who don't create imperfect beings and then get pissed off because they don't behace exactly like they want.
I allign with some of what she says. At one point she said we are all energy and energy continues. Einsteins E=mc2, everything is Energy, mass is energy, energy transforms but remains energy. I have studied, meditated Eastern philosophical ways (social Christian, no Bible) more, so don't have to decontruct as much. Divine is Radiant Being, a Mystery of not knowing (no mind) but we arise in That. No ego, no separate self, All sufficient.
I feel like we are very similar! I do not believe in Jesus and see the Bible as second hand mythology, not original really at all. I am more of a pagan/atheist. I do not believe in any god but I find nature and the universe peaceful, comforting and I enjoy having some ritual in my day to Day life. It’s good for my mental health. I am completely okay with not having all the answers and I kind of Love having this open mind. I did have a harder time With my Family and I deconstructed I’m my late 20’s which shocked everyone. I was very involved in the church and raised very fundamentally, young earth, evolution is a lie from the enemy, the end times are here, Jesus is returning any time, and my dad talked about hell a lot! Pointing out when people would Die that they were now burning for forever…it was traumatic. I was scared to completely let go for a long time even though I had some big issues I was battling internally because hell was terrifying and i always questioned if I was just being deceived by the enemy. So glad I finally took the leap and did some studying for Myself! I live in freedom and wonder now ❤ my Kids are no longer being brainwashed ❤
