Fun fact: in New Zealand, if a console is reaching the middle or end of its life, stores will usually face the bulk of its games with the spine facing out to maximise shelf space. Only killer app games or a single 'stack' of a big name game will be displayed front-facing. Therefore, for the Player's Choice games, an altered spine would *indeed* be a selling point, as games stores were not a Thing here until the last few years, and shelf space in video shops and warehouse-style shops is always at a premium. This was especially useful for the DS, where our PAL region casings meant you could only stack two or three games front-facing compared to four or five spine-facing.

See, I don't mind the GameCube yellow as much because yellow contrasts with GameCube purple. No big deal imo, and they maintain the spine formatting otherwise.
Agreed -- the GameCube "Player's Choice" games are actually the less-egregious out of any of these, and I rather quite like that gold, "PLAYER'S CHOICE" ribbon across the very top of the case. As well, the overall label real-estate taken up by the golden spine-logo is far, *far* less barfulous than, say, the absolutely horrid-looking grey/silver Xbox 360 Platinum repackagings, for example.

@@beneath8651 it sucks because I have all of my ps4 games and just the one copy of bloodborne sticking out its thumb like "oh hey yeah have you heard of me?"
Watching this after the 200th episode. Yeah I can see why the first quarter of that video is Scott taking jabs at his own format. We love him for that.
What I do is I separate the different variations first, and then organize them in alphabetical order separately, that way it’s alphabetical, but all the Players Choices are together, all the Grey-White gradient Platinum Hits are together and separate from the full-spine Platinum Hits which are also all together.
I even do that with the PS3 regular versions, separating the old design from the new. I was contemplating doing that with the original Xbox games, sorting the Live Enabled games from the non, but I feel that would be too much of a stretch.
As someone that was an older teenager that had some money, but not a lot of money, during this Era of gaming, the Yellow/burgundy tag did definitely make you look. It often let you know a big game was cheap. Not always, as some terrible games got on the "must have" lists, but overall, it made you notice.
I had the opposite sentiments as a child where whenever I got a greatest hits copy of a game I would be overjoyed because I was originally told that these greatest hits copies were re-releases where most of the bugs were fixed. I used to go crazy seeing that big red banner across the top of my ps2 titles
As far as the Game Cube goes, black and yellow goes together pretty well, IMO, so as long as you have a decent spread it shouldn't look too bad. Get too many clustered together and each cluster too far apart it might start to look a bit garish, and, yeah, if you only have a handful then it's an atrotious eye sore.
Those are really cute complains compared to the atrocities that were the European PlayStation platinum PS2 and PSP games, and the worst of all, PS3. If that yellow triggered you, you're not ready for the PS3 platinum.
Scott is so underrated. I know lots of people say this, but the RUclips algorithm is seriously screwed up. Why isn’t this in every gamers recommendations?

@@curlyq2519 Couldn't it be considered a mild case of OCD? Like, anxiety is a serious mental disorder but the word is used to describe many mild cases and as someone with actual anxiety disorders that doesn't bother me.
@@cheekybananaboy3361 No, this couldn't be considered OCD at all. This is wanting things to be neat, which is called being a normal human being. Anxiety is a feeling as well as a disorder, OCD is a crippling disorder that needs to stop being misused by people who want to be quirky. OCD is washing your hands until they crack and bleed but continuing anyway because you're convinced you didn't do it "right" the first times. It's taking hours to leave the house because you're convinced you didn't turn off the lights/stove/etc even after you've double, triple, etc checked. It's being afraid your friends or family are going to get hurt unless you follow a specific pattern or ritual. OCD is *not* being mildly annoyed at things not being neat.
Can everyone just calm down not everything that you say has to be the exact definition from a dictionary. Just because you have your own opinion on things doesn't mean that everyone has to do exactly as you think they should.
I have a friend who hated his cover art having those on them so bad that he literally went to gamestop to trade in his copy of Ni No Kuni for another copy of Ni No Kuni without the greatest hits case. The cashier was utterly baffled.
My parents bought Player's Choice games for me when I was younger because they figured "well if other people like it, it must be a good game and it's much cheaper too." That's how I got to play Wind Waker, Paper Mario TTYD, Pikmin, Kirby Air Ride, and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle which I thought were all excellent games.
You mean I'm not the only one who finds this annoying? I always end up having to organize a console's cases by the printing because of this. If something deviates from the norm, it's off to one side, like it's in detention, all the rebels trapped in one place.
I wonder if sorting the games by genre would work out, like you put all ps2 racing games together for example, and then fighting games would go together in another part of the ps2 section
The Gamecube yellow spine labels are actually my favorite implementation of "Player's Choice" because the format is the same, but the color is specifically the complement to the only color on their normal box (the purple of the gamecube logomark). Seeing those at a store as a kid made me stop and look at them because our tiny game store had to store a lot of games sideways like that so you could only see the spine at first. I think it was a brilliant move. The "crimson" PS2 ones were also okay, but the rounded container on the spine really bugged me.
I kept going back and forth checking my games collection and going back to watch the video. I can't believe I never really took much notice to these aspects, even though I've questioned it before.
"And thus it was torn! It being THAT, because that tears it." is such a wild phrase and I kind of love it. Why use three words when 12 can take your listener on a verbal adventure?!
You forgot to mention playstation 2's platinums in Europe. Worst offender of them all. The entire case was silver and all the disc art completely removed xD pic: www.vinjatvideogames.com/files/3419/products/3511050/crash_bandicoot_de_wraak_van_cortex_plat.jpg
Platinium is a pain in the ass. You got 20 white games and this one gray box looks just awful. I'm not buying them but finding some in regular realase is difficult.
I'm not a physical game collector, but I do love books - and I 100% understand your pain!! The worst is when you're buying a series and then they change the art halfway through!!!! Or even change the size of the books, so that there are sudden height changes on the shelf! I have literally stopped buying some series because they've suddenly changed the cover art - and now, I utterly REFUSE to buy physical copies of any books until the ENTIRE series is out and I can get them all at once in the same style. Drives me crazy!
I think the Greatest Hits on PS2 honestly looks the best out of all of them. The burgundy doesn't really clash with the original black. They look pretty good together on a shelf.
Ah, yes. The video that introduced me to Scott by randomly appearing in my recommendations. Subscribed and have been watching since. Never thought I would get to consider myself someone who subscribed to a RUclipsr before they got super popular, but here we are. Thanks for the 2 (wow) years of entertainment, Scott, and here's to many more! ...and also thanks for bringing my OCD self to the attention of tacky looking "bestseller" re-releases of games that subsequently caused me to invalidate all of the games I owned in my collection under those labels because they looked different from the others. Thanks.
Tbh growing up the greatest hits ps2 boxes were the coolest looking boxes in my eyes and I still think they look pretty great, some others on this list too
MagicSpartan no, OCD is different. OCD is where you have rituals where you have to wash your hands x many times or else something bad will happen. Just being obsessed with something looking different isn't OCD.

@@beneath8651 it sucks because I have all of my ps4 games and just the one copy of bloodborne sticking out its thumb like "oh hey yeah have you heard of me?"
Why did you make a 12 minute video about game spines? Wait...
Why did I watch a 12 minute video about game spines
Because it's THE PLAYER'S CHOICE! *Scott's theme*
I too spent 12 minutes waiting for a real point to all of this, and it was like waiting for Godot.
Scoliosis
Watching this after the 200th episode. Yeah I can see why the first quarter of that video is Scott taking jabs at his own format. We love him for that.
god all of your videos are so experimental, hilarious and just plain fun,10/10 channel
This feels like it could have been an avgn episode
What I do is I separate the different variations first, and then organize them in alphabetical order separately, that way it’s alphabetical, but all the Players Choices are together, all the Grey-White gradient Platinum Hits are together and separate from the full-spine Platinum Hits which are also all together.
yes. Finally someone intelligent
yeah I was wondering why he didn't so that
300 IQ move
I even do that with the PS3 regular versions, separating the old design from the new. I was contemplating doing that with the original Xbox games, sorting the Live Enabled games from the non, but I feel that would be too much of a stretch.

Some like to sort alphabetically
Because logic.
Nicholas NRG sort by multiple criteria. Sort by spine type and then alphabetically.
Exactly what I do
As someone that was an older teenager that had some money, but not a lot of money, during this Era of gaming, the Yellow/burgundy tag did definitely make you look.
Jesus christ
Oh god, I forgot those. And I thought the golden "Favoritos" (Favorites) we got here in Brazil were bad.
They were later replaced by the ps3 essentials though.
Holy shit is that ugly...
We have R&C Tools of Destruction in that packaging. Maybe that's why I hate that game so much.
Scott is so underrated. I know lots of people say this, but the RUclips algorithm is seriously screwed up. Why isn’t this in every gamers recommendations?
TheBeastModeGamer Because that's OCD-spreading video?
I think most gamers would actually like to have a shelves full of games that look good, not with a crazy title that make everything looks bad

This has 451 THOUSAND views. Compared to a lot of other gaming channels he’s doing great.
0:53 I've been trying to find 3D Dot Game Heroes in a Scott the Woz video because that's where the outro comes from and I finally found it...it even appears again in this video
I'm I the only one that doesn't care as long as I get the game that I've always wanted for a cheap price.
SymbioteNx379 no I did that with Smash Bros. Melee and Super Mario Sunshine
SymbioteNx379 does the color of Video game box even matter? No.
SymbioteNx379 I got Yooka-Laylee for 17 dollars. Decent price.
Well it's because he's a hardcore collector. That's the perspective he's coming from here
That was me growing up, I didn't care for how the box looked with all of that extra jank on it, all I cared was: A) Can I get this game at a cheaper price? B) That it works
The level of OCD in this video is hilarious. I don't know anyone who ever complained about this, let alone make it so entertaining!
J C this isn't OCD. OCD is a serious mental disorder. It's not perfectionism
This is a little above the standard level of human desire for neatness. This is an obsession.
I know, why doesn't it say "KoNaMi" to match the SuPeR BomBerMaN
This is by far my favorite Scott the woz video
I have a friend who hated his cover art having those on them so bad that he literally went to gamestop to trade in his copy of Ni No Kuni for another copy of Ni No Kuni without the greatest hits case. The cashier was utterly baffled.

Love listening to Scott complain about things that don’t really matter ❤️🔥
My parents bought Player's Choice games for me when I was younger because they figured "well if other people like it, it must be a good game and it's much cheaper too." That's how I got to play Wind Waker, Paper Mario TTYD, Pikmin, Kirby Air Ride, and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle which I thought were all excellent games.
You mean I'm not the only one who finds this annoying? I always end up having to organize a console's cases by the printing because of this. If something deviates from the norm, it's off to one side, like it's in detention, all the rebels trapped in one place.

Wait, I just realised all of his games are in alphabetical order. It makes sense but god damn, I didn’t think he would go that far
Masked Blaze it’s easier to find games if you have a lot of em
Supernovaman 682 True
People do this with books, people do it with games.
I wonder if sorting the games by genre would work out, like you put all ps2 racing games together for example, and then fighting games would go together in another part of the ps2 section
I do that too LOL
1 minute ago the first scott the woz video of 2018 came out
Now i can sleep knowing I spent 12 minutes of my life watching a guy complaining about color
Lol i stopped at 6 min after i realized i was wasting my time.
That sentence sounds so wrong out of context.
I actually really like the Players choice games, the presentation of it with ribbons, gold, and burgundy makes it look like a treasure in my opinion

AKO675 oh god I have those
The original Play Station also had Platinum lol I spent years pondering why my copy of Bug's Life was apparently more premium than for example Spyro
Platinium is a pain in the ass. You got 20 white games and this one gray box looks just awful. I'm not buying them but finding some in regular realase is difficult.
And i found out that Killzone in normal version have manual in color but platinium have manual in gray. Why they even have to safe money on manual.
To be fair, PAL PS2 cases are so spleensuckingly hideous that nothing can really worsen them.
Ah Hell yeah, Scotts back
Damn, is the hiatus over already?
Welcome back Scott!

Why don’t you put all your special edition yellow ones together and then your standard ones ...
Homeless Pork because most people put their games in alphabetical order to easily find them
What i thought
I organise my games by franchise and release/numbered order.
Put them on the same shelf, at the end in alphabetical order. If you know its a players choice game it would make it even EASIER, and look way better
Because he dumb-dumb.
Thanks.
That spine joke though, I literally had scoliosis fixture surgery a week ago
Gonna be mean here: This whole video boils down to: "The spine is different." AAAAAAAHHHHHH
Exactly! And I 100% agree with it.
“I’ll try to make this spine tangent as short as possible” as I am watching a 12 minute video which is nothing but a spine tangent
Tbh growing up the greatest hits ps2 boxes were the coolest looking boxes in my eyes and I still think they look pretty great, some others on this list too
I'm quite sure this is OCD.
Still an entertaining video though.
MagicSpartan no, OCD is different. OCD is where you have rituals where you have to wash your hands x many times or else something bad will happen. Just being obsessed with something looking different isn't OCD.
+Dave Hobbs, Considering the dude in this video is actually being serious about this, he probably has some kind of disorder.
Personally, I never minded the "greatest hits players choice" thing. I just thought of them as "special games". Also i keep my GBA boxes.
Same, I divide my regular games and the players choice games so they feel like special deals instead of intrusions.
