Yes, I heard about the mall, it’s sad to see the golf course go, but I realize things change. I now live in Florida and in our area, there have been several golf courses that have closed in the last few years.
Very nostalgic footage. Air Force brat myself and first came here in 77 till 83. Returned in 88 and been here ever since. Love this little island. Thanks you for posting this! Greatly enjoyed it.

You are very welcome. Yes, sea side along route 58, I when we first arrived on Okinawa I remember walking from the Hamagawa Lodge to Camp Foster and it seemed so desolate! Not anymore! The original videotape was recorded to send back to family in the USA, but I’m glad we kept a copy as it has become a time capsule! We really enjoyed living on your beautiful island, I hope to make it back there someday! I was born on mainland Japan in Yokosuka. My family has very fond memories of living in Japan and Okinawa. Thank you!
Thank you for posting. I was also 15 in 1987 and a fellow Marine BRAT. We lived on Kadena in Sebille Manor. I went to Kubasaki for 8th grade, 85-86. Then they rezoned, so I had to go to Kadena for 9th & 10th, before we went back to the states. Great trip back memory lane!
Glad you enjoyed it! I’ve been wanting to get these on youtube for a while…to preserve them for me and my family but also for anyone else who may enjoy! Thanks!
Nostalgia! Love it! Got here in ’89… and stayed. Didn't realize Pizza Inn was already there when I got here. It might still be there. Haven't checked in a couple years. I live up north by the acquarium.
I first came to Okinawa in 2000. Stayed for 6 years, and came back again the end of 2018 to present. It’s crazy how it’s changed over the years. So much in this video is familiar yet so different at the same time. All the main places shown sort of still exist in some capacity. It made me chuckle to see you guys go to the pizza place, which is still there, although the pachinko parlor and the surrounding businesses are long gone.
Wish I could have seen Okinawa back then. A lot of this still looks close to how it does now but so much more built up now. Got to Oki in 2011 and the 13 years I e been here it has already changed so much
I can only imagine how much it has changed. I was only there for 3 years and haven’t been back since 1989! My dad was there in 1969 before Vietnam and when we moved there in 1986, he said it had changed a lot in that time frame!
Awesome! Reminds me of good old days! I think I saw an airplane on the top of the Sheraton Hotel roof that was the feature of the hotel at that time. Sugio! Hamakawa lodge/hotel is still in Chatan. Still looking very nice 😊
I think the Sheraton was over a little bit from the one with the airplane on the top. One of my other videos on my channel has a picture of that hotel with the airplane on it. When we moved on to base housing it was right above our house. Thanks for watching!
Was an air force brat here in early 1989 to late 1990. Lived at the Tamaki apartments near the Sunabe seawall and went to A.E.I.S. on Kadena. That quick shot of the pachinko palace means a ton to me, haven't seen it since being there as it's no longer there nowadays. Just down the street from the pachinko was a small window on a building where you would exchange winnings for prizes as gambling was technically illegal hahaha! I would go with my mom to exchange her winnings. Good times.
I enjoyed that area a lot! We first stayed at the Hamagawa Lodge upon arrival to Okinawa near there and so my first exploring was done around the Sunabe area. I realize now it has changed significantly!
I arrived in Okinawa on January 1979 and reported at the BAS 9TH MTBN as an HM2. It was exactly the time when Okinawa started driving on the wrong side of the street. They brought a lot of Japanese cops from the mainland to guide the Okinawans (and us) how to drive on the left side instead of the right. It took me about a month to get use to it. I was issued a military driver's license to drive an ambulance which was the size of an F150. That thing almost filled the whole lane of the streets specially when we passed through those little villages. That was a good experience.
That must have been quite an experience! I know it was a change for us too, I learned how to drive on Okinawa, on the base where we lived. When we moved back to the US it took me a bit to get the hang of it. Thanks for watching and be sure to check out my other videos on Okinawa and other places on my channel!

Beautiful island and good people as long as you respected the culture. Semper Fi
Thanks for the reply! We left Okinawa in 1989, about a week short of my 18th birthday, so I couldn't drive except for the few places on base. We lived on Kishaba and back then there was no tunnel to the other side of Camp Foster so we were pretty isolated. Fortunately a few of my friends turned 18 so we could get out more. Actually liked living in Okinawa City better than Kishaba as there was more to do and it was easier to get to!
@@GouKou2023 😂 yes I had a Habu sake night which started out with Beam & coke. Yes, the video begins in Okinawa City and then goes through the Awase area, then to Camp Foster and ending up in the Sunabe area. I love all the old cars too! In my other video - Okinawa City - (Koza) Walk 1987 - you can see a red Skyline 2000 R30. Skylines were my favorite.
On that adjacent corner of Route 330 from Plaza Housing is a huge mall now. Suprisingly enough many of those buildings in your video are still standing. Including the Pizza In that's still open to this day.

Awase Golf Course is now gone, replaced by a shopping mall.
Yes, we loved playing golf there. It was where I really learned how to play. A great sport that I enjoy still to this day. Thanks for watching.

I saw it! It’s only for a second, but it's there! Thanks for pointing that out!

You wouldnt' recognize the island now. ;)

Pizza Inn
I used to work as bartender at Whisper's Bar, Bar at Torii Station, Kinser, White Beach, Courtney, Lester.
Butler officers club
I really appreciate you share the video.

There wasn't Coco Ichiban Curry or Coco's Curry in Okinawa that time.(≧▽≦)
Yes, there wasn’t any when I was there, and I don’t ever remember having curry in a restaurant. We loved yakitori, sushi, yakisoba, tontatsu, all kinds of soba and others!
