I've dealt with these specific iMortor things a couple of times for bike shop customers. They're pretty easy to install on most bikes (some bikes need a little metalwork to make them fit), but they're slow with disappointingly short range. They're be good for a kid who wants an e-bike.
In Spain your most definitely do not get that kind of deal. I have not seen any complete electric mountain bike with those features at that price in any local shop or on Aliexpress (adding up the shipping fee). The cheapest option right now is a 36V/20 inches/Folding mountain bike at US$780. Just out of curiosity, could you please state brand name and model?
I'm not sure if I saw one this bike, but I would like to stress the importance of using a torque arm when installing a front hub motor. It helps prevent the axle bolt from twisting out of the fork which can be really dangerous to lose your front wheel, especially at high speed.
Greetings from Canada. Home of the Rocky Mountain. Love how you converted an old Rocky Mountain bike. Nice to know you can convert an old bike with this e-bike option.
I bought an Android phone for my i mortor wheel. Make sure it has bluetooth 4.00. But I have found, the wheel worked, without me even switching on my phone, so you don't need a phone to make the wheel function. You mainly need the phone app to switch gears, battery level, speed... The throttle/accelerator switch works to propel the wheel without the app. You have to start peddling first of all, get the wheel spinning before the motor kicks in.
I noticed and looked into this (same words) thing not too long ago. Sponsored adds often come with scripts or talking points. One time I heard two different guys use the phrase, "when you have to take care of it on the fly" word for word.
I bought one of these, really does assist and easy to fit although a little heavy,, the only downside is the battery only lasts for about 8 km {5 miles} before needing a recharge.
I'm shopping electric bikes for my wife, this looks like a nice way of accomplishing that. The motor and the range look fine for her purposes, thanks for the review!
I don't really need crazy fast top speed or long lasting battery, I just need something simple to add a motor on an old bike to pick kid up from school, this is perfect! Thanks for this video!
This video is from 2017, and like everything involving electronics, the technology has improved and prices have changed since then. I'm doing the research on converting my cruiser bike to electric such as was done in this video, but from what I'm seeing so far, for the price of a conversion kit similar to what is shown in this video, plus a battery (most kits I've seen online so far do NOT include the battery - add a couple of hundred $$), you'd have spent $500-ish dollars on the conversion, maybe a little more, and you'd still have to do the conversion work yourself. That doesn't include the cost of the bike itself whether you've already spent that money and have an existing bike or not. On the other hand, there are already converted, complete electric bikes available online now for right around $600 with specs very similar to this and other conversion kits. Converting my existing bike is making less sense to me at this point vs. buying a complete electric bike already converted. The wild card is buying a bike sight-unseen vs. the cruiser bike I already have.
Hi Ben, thank you very much for this comprehensive contribution. There is one point you may want to clarify. What is the reaction of the wheel when pulling the brake, i.e. because of a red light? Does the wheel pull you into the crossing traffic, despite of breaking? Or does the engine stop working (as it should)?
ive got this kit but it lasts less 1 hour under power from new which did suprise me but is actually what it is rated at as i am not a light person. hopefully they will release a longer range battery as the kit itself is a valant effort and move into the ebike market.
Just an FYI.. this wheel is not meant to be used in any wet or muddy situations. So be careful driving off road with it. There are many other wheels out there for same price that don't have this issue.
Nice little add on, there's better ones out there but for light and cheap looks fair. Question on weatherproofness, how rain/puddle proof is it and the controller? I'll be getting splashed a lot.
Wow thanks for the video, it seems easy to put the new wheel on, but i wanted to know if it is easy to put the old wheel again for example when mountainbiking? Thanks again and keep up the good work!
How heavy is the wheel? If I'm doing deliveries and I run out of battery, how difficult is it gonna be to pedal? Also, can this wheel be used in the rain?
Keep in mind it is not water proof. Their website says: "It is best to avoid the rainy day ride or in the mud pit off-road. Because after this use, if the use of high-power water jet washing machine, will lead to rust of the shaft, friction increases, thereby increasing the consumption of electricity, and eventually lead to rust and abnormal bearings."
Yup, I find it's actually easier to steer a bike with an engine on the front than on the back in Winter. Less slipping it seems. I'm actually considering keeping this little Honda on the front of the Huffy to drive the front Kevlar tire for more Winters to come, and as backup engine in Summer, but adding on a 6.5HP engine mid-frame to chain drive the rear wheel for faster travel when roads are clear and safer for the higher speed, or as a backup engine in Winter. My suggestion for anyone on a much smaller budget, get 1 of those $150-250 Chinese engine kits for the back and 1 of those $290-400 electric hub motor kits for the front. It'd help with starting, riding and fuel efficiency, plus, if you run out of gas, turn on the engine, and if you run out of battery charge, pedal to bump start the engine. Maybe put on a set or 2 of adult stabilizer wheels for Winter though...
How much does the wheel weigh when fully assembled? I am thinking about buying this. I was originally thinking about getting the geo wheel but after reading the reviews & see how much that costs, this is way better. During the thanksgiving weekend it was down to $249. Wish I had purchased it then. Maybe they will have another sale soon.
two questions. First, can I buy more battery packs for extended range? and second, is there a more powerful option in that configuration, like a 1000 or 1500 watts?
I have this wheel I csn try to answer questions but I'm not a super tech person so please don't ask me about the volts or amps or what not. I'll be running some endurance test later, such as how long it lasts and how far does it last.
I've got the iMotor and it works pretty well except I can't get the bluetooth to work. Would there be a way to add another battery? I'm not a wiz on electronics. It seems all of the control boards are located in the moon shaped battery. Would it be possible to attach a pig tail that would come through the case on have a pug / connector to attached a similar or larger 2nd bank of batteries that could be hung in a bag, mounted on the frame or even laid in a basket? I've not taken any trips more than a few miles but I'd like to be able to do a ride of between 20 and 30 miles. Everything I've seen and read indicates the battery wont last that far. OR, would it just be best to get a second batter? Thanks
Hi Ben, thank you for the video. Instead of using a dremel to cut the fork to fit the battery, could you have just turned the wheel hub around counter clockwise to insert the battery nicely?
Are the pedals on it due to the motor being too weak to take it up hills? I'm new to this E-world, i would have thought e-motors give it enough power to go up hills, Can you shed some light on this please?
There's only so many form factors you can effectively use for an in hub brushless motor. Gearless drive means pretty low torque until you get it moving a couple of MPH. (high amps for low effect) But at speed its far more efficient. The key differences will the number and quality of magnets, stator poles and winding pattern. Quality of all materials used.
Hi Ben! I was wondering if you could implement metric distance measurements alongside the imperial in your videos? I know it's always just a google search away, but it would be so much better if it were included in the video itself. Thanks :)
Just curious, is there any reason you could not have simply loosened the axle nut and rotated the motor a little to avoid dremelling your fork? Is there anything that causes it to be a fixed mounting location? Id like to avoid dremelling my bike if possible...
I understand that the system does not know wheter one is pedalling or not. In other words the bike may keep going without you pedalling. This should not be allowed on a PAS system. Is there a way to render it PAS compatible?
That mounting hole is in place to hold fenders (for those who live where it rains) and/or racks (for those who want to carry stuff). I understand that my way is not everyone's way so, speaking only for me, there is NO WAY I would cut that off. In a case such as this, I'd be looking for a kit with a battery mount elsewhere.
What about the disc brake on this conversion kit? How does that work? Hydraulic? Electric? Mechanical? Can you just use the old brakes for the new front wheel?
Hi there I have one of the e bike wheels and for the price they are pretty cool I’m looking at getting another battery for the bike but have no idea where to purchase one I’m not even sure if they have them in days anymore Any details or advice I would be most grateful Many thanks
Can you ride it in the rain. Can it still keep its full power in the rain. Some 1 told me if the spark plug gets wet it can mess up the electric power. Is it water proof ? What's the exact names of the best e bikes that goes up to 28 mph and 18 miles on a full charge where can I get them bike's from ? and what e bike's I can put a small mini lightweight trailer that can pull up to 50 lbs ? I want the names of the top 5 e bikes
Can you ride with out electric when it dies or does it have drag , like it’s harder to ride ? Thanks I’m totally new to the scene and would consider purchasing this one For the ease .. ty for the upload
Awesome video, I look forward to,every one you upload. Keep up the awesome work! Great drone footage and I like how you showed the install and the issue you had, one room for improvement, lower the music a little and PLEASE make your videos longer, maybe ten or fifteen minutes. I always feel rushed watching it due to the short length and quick pacing, we on RUclips like more detail and depth and can do without some of the fancy cuts and edits. In any case, love the videos bud!
do you get any torque driven understeer when trying to make a tight turn while engaging the motor drive? In other words, does the bike try to go straight while applying power the to motor during a tight turn?
How much power or torque, speed accompanied with pedals, whatever it might be are you allowed put on a standard bike before you are required to start paying insurance policies, as if it was a petrol motorbike, I have just looked at a few of the Motors out there, that I have watched so far, a and strong fit man can get up to that speed so, I don't think these should be made pay insurance to go on the road, what is the situation on this antibody.?
I got one of these kits and I turned on the button and all 3 lights were on, and when I hit the throttle nothing happened. I was wondering if you had the same issue, and if you have to have the bike in motion in order to use it?
Eric Gillespie, do you not have electricity available? I guess if you are doing a long x-country road trip and camping you might want a generator, but for normal use a good free wheel for coasting is the most practical and economical option.
Not much power really. Correct. The average person can produce appx 1/4 hp for short duration. ( a bit under 190 watts) I fly RC models that use up to 5000 watt motors... (appx 6.2 hp) Some with 2 of those motors.
How to get the english version app for this wheel? Everything is in chinese. Also it doesnt show the Bluetooth connection of this bike in my phone when I attempt to pair. Any thoughts?
is it better to have the electric wheel in the back or the front of the bike.I'm thinking if i had a flat tire i can change it easier and faster if i had the electric wheel in the front tell me something ?
can you give us any clues on how to open up the motor compartment? It got water in it and we need to dry it out. We've taken the screws out but can't get the cover off. Can you suggest anything? Thanks for any replies
My ebike's a 1000w 48v wheel. It can actually get me rarely up to 46 or so if the winds are okay and im going downhill. As for going around places, usually about 30 or 35.
you're the only person who's reviewed to product on the whole of RUclips. thought more people would have.
Thank you. A lot of vids just go over the features of various bikes and kits, but don’t go into details!

Can you do another electric skateboard please?
AuthenTech - Ben Schmanke do they sell one for 700c?

Sorry, just to avoid any confusion, my question/comment was adressed to DroidTech
Had to subscribe, finally, a person who doesn't make a long video beating around the bush. You won me.

I just saw another review of this bike from another dude. He said the same words that you said. that's weird

Crazy, but I’m not surprised!

bigger battery in the frame would get better range and improve balance on the bike.
When shipping cost more then the actual item.

Most units have an optional Barack switch, that does imeadiatly stop the motor.

I have a 52cc petrol engine running my back wheel now I'm thinking of making it a hybrid also
It's only 3200mah, the 10 18650 batteries are connected in series, so it's a 36 volt- 3200mah battery
Yep
Is that good or no?
Thank you 🙏 and great 👍 video about 🚲 bike 🚴 electric ⚡️
You got it

Does salty slush rust the motor shaft or bearings?
And you answered my question.
it's down to $289 now. Not a bad deal.
Edit: I almost prefer the front wheel add on motor. It gives you 2 wheel drive in the end.
+murderdoggg - Hah, great point! Thanks for sharing
murderdogg /yeah never even thought of it that way makes good sense man
The funny thing is that the battery itself costs $200 on ebay lol you'd be better off just buying a new motor.
$150 now at walmart drop that down to $40-$90 an i would say its worth it considering the parts are dirt cheap

brilliant video. I was looking 4 a cheap solution
What if somebody wants a 500 watt or a thousand watt
48V motor instead of a 240 Watt 36v?
You can upgrade, it's possible!
17 inch 60 volt 1000 Watt hub motor canacihe 70 kmph speed

25° maximum climbing ablity with full load

Cool for commuting in business wear!
Is the music compulsory or can it be switched off ?
Hi Ben, thank you for the video. Instead of using a dremel to cut the fork to fit the battery, could you have just turned the wheel hub around counter clockwise to insert the battery nicely?
Then you would ride backwards lol
@@Mark-gd5vr then the hub does not have a reverse. It only goes in one direction
I put an 80cc engine on my beach cruiser, if I put this motor on my front wheel, could I theoretically make a hybrid?
I have the same ?
Love all your videos. After watch review DJI Spark....i go out and order one lol
Attach a solar panel in the back so it can charge while you ride!!
Hah, that'd be a fun project!
A solar panel that fits a bike would never provide enough output to even charge for a 5 minute ride
I wonder if it's possible to use the wheel on the rear instead of the front
I wonder if they still make this kit... This would make a perfect hill assist for my (gas) motorized bike! Lol
Are the pedals on it due to the motor being too weak to take it up hills?
I'm new to this E-world, i would have thought e-motors give it enough power to go up hills, Can you shed some light on this please?
Why does this look almost exactly like the upcoming UrbanX / UrbaNext wheel?
sponge720 this the first iteration of the UbanX.
There's only so many form factors you can effectively use for an in hub brushless motor.
Gearless drive means pretty low torque until you get it moving a couple of MPH. (high amps for low effect) But at speed its far more efficient.

A guy takes one apart in this vid. It's made of good quality materials far as I can tell.

Can I fit this conversation kit on an Ancheer Electric bike front wheel so I can make it a dual motor system?
Im interested on the product. I like to know if can I climb inclined roads relying on the motor only? How about noise too?
Hi Ben! I was wondering if you could implement metric distance measurements alongside the imperial in your videos? I know it's always just a google search away, but it would be so much better if it were included in the video itself.
Thanks :)
Probably gonna get a 2K Watt one for my bike
Great ideas thanks.
Is the battery too big for hand carry when on flights that do not allowed checking in of lithium batteries
2 stroke conversation!!! have one..on my second years....runs great!!!.... lots of fun!
Can you tell me which kits best for food delivery job... with affordable price all in one ?
is it easy to plug auxiliary 36V battery and not the tiny "halfmoon" that plugs in the hub?
Getting one for my fat bike
That mounting hole is in place to hold fenders (for those who live where it rains) and/or racks (for those who want to carry stuff). I understand that my way is not everyone's way so, speaking only for me, there is NO WAY I would cut that off. In a case such as this, I'd be looking for a kit with a battery mount elsewhere.
Thanks for the info!
How many different ones have you looked at and is this the best?
How about one that can easily use batteries other than the maker's custom pack?
What about the disc brake on this conversion kit? How does that work? Hydraulic? Electric? Mechanical? Can you just use the old brakes for the new front wheel?
Hi there
I have one of the e bike wheels and for the price they are pretty cool
I’m looking at getting another battery for the bike but have no idea where to purchase one
I’m not even sure if they have them in days anymore
Any details or advice I would be most grateful
Many thanks
just use an electric drill attached to the wheel and a 2 mile long extension lead
ingrown toe nail I could make you a device to coil the lead back up on the way home
3000w Bikes are great 45 miles per hour on electric alone
How much are extra batteries?....in case you want to go on a long distance ride and stuff it would be good to bring extra.
Seems nice. Do you know if it's waterproof?
How heavy is the front wheel in lbs?
How has this done over the months/years you've had it
Couldn't stop laughing when I saw the price...
AH. . . so thats why he didnt just say it in the video
Front motor vs Rear motor, what's better? In my humble opinion, front wheel is better because I get two-wheel drive with pedal assist instead of one.
Can you ride with out electric when it dies or does it have drag , like it’s harder to ride ? Thanks I’m totally new to the scene and would consider purchasing this one For the ease .. ty for the upload
Any way of hacking the speed limiter on this?
I wish :)

do you get any torque driven understeer when trying to make a tight turn while engaging the motor drive? In other words, does the bike try to go straight while applying power the to motor during a tight turn?

Is it possible to just use pedal assist with this kit? Rules where I'm using it says bicycle MUST NOT have throttle, only pedal assist.
I got one of these kits and I turned on the button and all 3 lights were on, and when I hit the throttle nothing happened. I was wondering if you had the same issue, and if you have to have the bike in motion in order to use it?
I just got one of these but there were no instructions in the box. Is there a step by step video available?
I wonder what degree incline will it climbing without pedal assistance??
Uphill is where you need this, I seen on another review they stuggle.
This thing has no torque luckily my country is completely flat
Do they come with 27.5" wheels? And also does it fit still fit with disc brakes in front?
the price of the kit its US$425.99 ,you can buy a bike whit 100 dlls more with everything and delivery
Any recommendations for my wife and I. We ride mountain gravel roads up to 10 mile rides. Roads can have up to 20% slope on some hills
Can it be charged through riding? Does it have regenerative braking?
Eric Gillespie no. I guess it would cost more
Bagoon 😩 back to scouring the internet I suppose. Thanks for the response
Eric Gillespie, do you not have electricity available? I guess if you are doing a long x-country road trip and camping you might want a generator, but for normal use a good free wheel for coasting is the most practical and economical option.
Solar charger would be great for it, if there's no outlet at your destination.
Have you found a good alternative?
...130Wh, thats totally nothing...
The motor has 240 Watts of power, the battery has 115 Watt-Hours of capacity (36V * 3.2Ah = 115 Watt-Hours).
Not much power really. Correct.
The average person can produce appx 1/4 hp for short duration. ( a bit under 190 watts)
I fly RC models that use up to 5000 watt motors... (appx 6.2 hp) Some with 2 of those motors.
Be Informed I have an idea in the works it's got four wheels and is powered buy old dead stuff that I siphon from the ground. XD
They sell some two stroke engine kits for bikes that can take you up to 30mph.
Yard Sale Dale don't get me wrong I love my lectricks ya know. But if you are gonna scoff at 130 just go gas I think 130 is perfectly reasonable
How to get the english version app for this wheel? Everything is in chinese. Also it doesnt show the Bluetooth connection of this bike in my phone when I attempt to pair. Any thoughts?
Binesh Joseph , did u figure out how to get the English version of the app. I just bought this and I'm having the same issue. Thank u for your time.
So what happens when I use a 36v motor with a 24v battery?
Will it work?
is it better to have the electric wheel in the back or the front of the bike.I'm thinking if i had a flat tire i can change it easier and faster if i had the electric wheel in the front tell me something ?
Do they make a model that will fit a Honda Ruckus front? I'd love to turn mine into some sort of a hybrid.
Looks like I'm saving up now.
Hope your battery is in Graphine type for a more better power.
But does it recharge the battery while pedalling or going downhill?
can you give us any clues on how to open up the motor compartment? It got water in it and we need to dry it out. We've taken the screws out but can't get the cover off. Can you suggest anything? Thanks for any replies
My ebike's a 1000w 48v wheel. It can actually get me rarely up to 46 or so if the winds are okay and im going downhill. As for going around places, usually about 30 or 35.
My 48 volt 350 watt around
50 kmph+
No torque arm?
Just the nuts is not enough to keep that wheel from coming off.
I would place 2 side by side.
