It's fairly common for Japanese lyricists to blend is some English words for songs. English is the most used language in the world, and in this case rock music has English roots. It's also kind of a cultural thing in Japan to use some English words in certain situations. Band Maid really likes to connect with fans around the world though, so I personally think that's the main reason they use some English words that fans will recognize. A lot of the "sing-along" parts are in English for crowd participation.

    • @RetiredInThailand
      @RetiredInThailand 3 года назад +9

There's also the fact that Japanese is a language that is almost entirely consisting of short syllables that end with a vowel sound. The Japanese use English words to provide a little variety in the vocals to allow for some consonant sounds (ie. 'Take over the world' end with a 'k','r', and 'd' sounds which are not common in Japanese.)

@@RyanMear also note that Miku is considered somewhat of a genius in the user of her English phrasing, as well as a technique that I don't claim to understand, but supposedly is a way to write Japanese lyrics for singing that also mimics somewhat the same end result of giving a break from just vowel sounds.
This technique is both hard for even Japanese to write and adding, but Miku had mastered it apparently and Saiki has no problem singing it.

Miku in one of the recent interviews mentioned that she uses English words where the Japanese word/phrase would not fit or was too long, that some ideas she has are better expressed and sung in English. She also mentioned using Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet as the basis for her solo song on the album Unseen World and the title is "Nightingale" taken from same.
Wilt thou be gone? It is not yet near day.
It was the nightingale, and not the lark,
That pierced the fearful hollow of thine ear.
Nightly she sings on yond pomegranate tree.
Believe me, love, it was the nightingale.

In Band-Maid's case the songwriting credits are usually the whole band (So never has Kanami been listed alone they always put BAND-MAID as a the songwritter) and lyrics credits are for Miku alone (since she makes all the lyrics herself) . Only through their interviews people came to learn that Kanami was the one making the demos for songs and creating the melodies, lead and rhythme riffs and guitar parts then Akane and Misa do their parts for bass and drums and then they all manage to arrange everything together while Miku is writing lyrics.

If you realy want to know their process of songwriting here an interview with the band. I saw this just posted by Tom Clark
From Interview with Miku Kobato and Kanami on Headbang vol. 28 (2020-12-21)
    - Did you make use of it for your future production activities as well as reviewing your past?
Kobato: We made use of it, po, don’t we? Our equipment, right?
Kanami: Yes, we bought new equipment on this occasion, such as new audio interfaces and speakers. Mics too.
Kobato: Right. In order to make more complete demos at home, we each bought a new computer, and in my case I bought a better mic to record vocal demos, po.
    - It seems all of you can use DAW.
Kanami: In my case, I write songs almost entirely on my computer. After that, I send data to my bandmates to let them arrange it.
    - You know, there are usually some members who are not good at things like that in a band.
Kanami: Sure, there is (laughter). I teach her.
Kobato: We taught each other quite a bit during that period, po.
Kanami: Such as how to program the drums. Like, “The drums are like this, so it’ll be interesting to write a phrase like this”. I taught her how to program it while sharing the screen.
    - So Akane-san wasn’t good at it (laughter). You Band-Maid have dense rhythm patterns and quite complicated drums and bass lines. Do you decide phrases and arrangements like that by exchanging data?
Kanami: Basically I’m the one who programs the drums, but I decide them only roughly, and it’s up to Akane about habitual movements and details. I’m like “It’s all right to arrange it as you want to hit”. She’s getting better and better at programming these days, so I often receive MIDI data from her.
Kobato: After that, we let Saiki, the vocalist, listen to it. She’s often like “Ah-chan (Akane) can do more, no?” or “This part should have more drums” and Akane suffers from that, po (laughter).
Kanami: As for the bass, it’s up to her [note: Misa] these days. I program the synth bass, but I let her program the main bass. I exchange data with her and I’m like “Change this part like this” and so on.
    - Misa-san’s bass really comes to the front.
Kobato: Everybody says “She should move bass lines more”, po (laughter).
Kanami: However, in this album (Unseen World), we also thought we should calm down the bass a little. Up until then, the bass moved so much some bass phrases interfered vocal melodies too much, so this time she plays it a little more calmly.
    - You get into the studio after you have completed a song including the arrangement perfectly, don’t you?
Kobato: That’s right. We first complete a song by exchanging data. We get into the studio only after we’ve shaped it perfectly, and we check it there, po.
    - Judging only from your sound, you look like a tough band with grooves and improvisations, but actually you are an intelligent, very modern and high-tech band.
    Kobato: Ha ha ha (laughter).
    - I think your way of production is rare for a rock band.
Kanami: We are often said it’s rare..

It's definitely a group effort, they're all amazingly talented. Also another thing to keep in mind is that they were only allowed to start writing there own songs around 2016, "Alone" is the first song they released themselves. A lot of the music is still great from 2014-2015, but you can definitely tell the difference from 2016 onward.

There are several reasons for adding English lyrics to their songs. One is Miku (rhythm g) always wanted to achieve World Domination - I really hope so - thus, English. But, the main reason is Band-Maid music is very western. It's hard rock. but, the Japanese language - the way the words are phrased and the phonetics work - do not lend easily to the western rock melody, beat, timing and composition styles. They've talked about this in depth in some of their interviews. A Japanese member of the B-M Reddit forum who translated many of their interviews stated that from his perspective, Miku is a lyrical genius because the way she fits the Japanese words and phrases to their western style music is very creative and sometimes astounding. It was stated, even for an average Japanese person, it can be hard for them to follow and sing along with the B-M songs because the way the words are structured with the main melodies and beats. Therefore, it is sometimes much easier to use English words to the melody lines. Also, it helps to get the western audience to relate to the songs better. Plus, it sounds cool. Band-Maid is a really really a special band.

They mix English and Japanese as a way of including their overseas fans. It's a very conscious choice. It's the same reason you'll hear lots of woah oh oh ohs and lalalas in their choruses. If you ever see them in Europe or North America everyone in the crowd sings those parts. Saiki really loves having the audience sing along with her. She'll even say before some songs "Let's sing this song together". She says it in Japanese so Miku translates it for the western audiences.

In Japan, in addition to Japanese, many English words are blended into everyday life.
It is normal for us Japanese to have English scattered in Japanese, and there is no sense of incongruity.
And there is a recognition that English is cool.
By mixing the native language of the birthplace of rock and roll in the lyrics, it represents respect for the culture of the place, while at the same time creating a more authentic and cool sound to the Japanese.
It is not limited to BAND-MAID, but most popular songs in Japan are a mix of Japanese and English.
This is just one of my opinion as a Japanese, but I don't think it's very wrong.
Sorry for the unnatural English because it's Google Translate.
And happy birthday! Greeting from japan.

Akane (30 yo), Kanami (29 yo), Miku (29 yo), MISA (28 yo) and Saiki (27 yo)
Yes, Kanami writes the songs but MISA and Akane adds their own parts.
If I remember correctly, MISA said in an interview, during the promotion WORLD DOMINATION album, that Kanami wrote the demo for the song "Anemone" and send it to her. MISA was blown away by the beauty of the song and wanted to create a bass line that could fit and reach that level. Basically, at the time of the album creation, she couldn't go to bed without having the bass lines from all the songs playing in her head. Same thing in the morning when she was waking up.
MISA also once said that she created a bass line while being drunk and when she got sober, she realize how difficult it was to play 😆
Miku writes all the lyrics with help from Saiki on some songs. For some time now, japanese bands mixed japanese and english on their songs. Sometimes it's just words and sometimes an all sentence. It kinda became a traditional thing to do in the songwriting but I don't know who started it and why exactly. I suppose it is for the international audience who doesn't speak japanese. And it's often in the chorus so the lyrics get stuck in your head and you can sing along.
BAND-MAID works so well as a team. They now know each other perfectly and I think we are far from having heard it all from this ladies.

True - the knowledge that Kanami originates the essential melodies and the others build parts on that with their particular instruments, came out in interviews. Misa gave probably the clearest description of the process. Kanami is very modest in person, but an immense talent and a true original.
Boasting is not considered a good thing in Japanese society. So westerners often underestimate them because they haven't heard them praise themselves. But it is more respectable to praise others and then use your talent in effective ways and let it be seen naturally.

My English is quite poor, I can understand up to 80% if I read it, but no more than 30-40% if I listen to it and in songs I find it very difficult, of Japanese 0% hahaha, but I have always felt the voice as an instrument, in fact 95% of the music I listen to is in languages I don't understand and of course, the mixture of the two languages, phonetically fits perfectly from my point of view.
By the way, I always hated that they do the "Spanish" version of songs for simple commercial reasons, the phonetics of each language is different enough to "spoil" a good song.
And yes, I agree with what you said about the drummers and bass players, with very few exceptions, what caught my attention in BAND-MAID was the bass / drums duo that gave me the sensation of being a steamroller, reminding me of the strength of Led Zeppelin, The Who or Deep Purple in "Made In Japan" ;)

They did compose a song named "Play" which should have originally been instrumental. But Saiki did like it so much and begged Miku to add lyrics to it. So it is now a song, where I do not know if it is instrumental or not.😄 Sometimes you are not sure if there is a chorus and where it begins or ends.
But for sure it is one of theit best songs, unusual, but cool. There are two live versions, a newer one from the same Okyu like Domination and an older one with a longe bass solo at the beginning. Unfortunately this version is no more on You Tube.

Kanami does the demos, including backing tracks. Akane and MISA work their parts from that, Although Akane often complains that no one human being can play the drum parts that are on the demos, making more work for her, since she has to work with a part that should be played by at least two drummers. Miku write all the lyrics with some help from Saiki, which can make it hard on Saiki when Miku gives her difficult words to say or too many tricky English phrases. But all of the girls are open to new challenges, so they usually work it out in the end. You should do 'Freedom' LIVE next, or 'Real Existence' LIVE.

Hey man, enjoyed your reaction again good info and fun. Its always cool to watch someone enjoy the band that I love. A little info about when they surround the drummer, they are making faces at her to see if she will mess up. Sometimes she has got them laughing to where they almost mess up. For groove rock, you should give Manners (MV) a listen. It has a real 70's feel. I would also add two other MVS to suggestions: Blooming and Rinne (their most metal song). Also, to see their range, one of their ballads would be cool Daydreaming (MV), Wonderland (Live-jazzy song) and About Us (pop-jazzy feel). Have a great one!

:34 Yeah, that's the same reaction I have every time I listen to BAND-MAID. They just make me so damn happy. Sometimes, just thinking about this band makes me smile.
Miku, rhythm guitar/backing vocals, is a fantastic lyricist. She knows the band has a large international audience and so writes her lyrics using an international language: English. Most Japanese bands use some English lyrics, but Miku really blends in a lot of it. A few Japanese reactors I've watched have mentioned that some of the English words she chooses also sound like Japanese words. And she loves word play, too. She and Saiki are a great team.

As people have already commented, Kanami☕ composes songs including drum and bass parts and sends demo to other members, then Akane and MISA add/modify their respective parts and Miku writes lyrics to fit the song.
Akane once said that Kanami's demo drum part was possible to play only if she had three arms😅 So Akane has been modifying it to playable drum part by a human (or a half-gorilla)🍌🥁🦍👩
When MISA comes up with a cool bass line, she sends it to Saiki for her opinion (MISA wants to receive a reply from Saiki "That's cool!")🍺🎸🍺
Saiki👸 sometimes complains when she receives new fast-tempo songs, "when do I breathe?"😨
Miku🕊 is there to rescue Saiki. She ingeniously writes lyrics or negotiates with Kanami to modify the song a little so that Saiki can sing without suffocating😇 (with exception of "Alone"😉)
Btw, Saiki, the youngest member, basically has the final say to all songs they create😁
With respect, members call Saiki as ”Sensei” (means teacher). (P_O)🕊💕

Nice reaction! Their joy on stage is palpable, indeed! Yeah, Kanami’s lead tone is a little off in this concert footage. I’m not a recording engineer so I won’t presume to guess why. Maybe a mistake, maybe on purpose for some other benefit overall. But while most of their older concert footage has been taken down from RUclips (and the DVD’s are out of print), the excellent “Real Existince (Live)” is up on their main channel, and it is a riot. The energy is through the roof.
Real Existence is from their early days, the same album as Thrill (and while Thrill was their breakout song and video, Real Existence was the followup that capitalized on that momentum). Like all the early songs, they didn’t write or compose the song, but even then they had musical import, and they clearly love playing it. The live footage from 2018 is proof enough. Just an absolutely rocking good time

MISA has mentioned in interviews that she admires & has been influenced by Paz Lenchantin. Akane was influenced by and is friends with drummer Nao of Maximum the Hormone. Kanami’s influences include Carlos Santana and Eddie Van Halen. Kanami is rhythm guitarist Miku’s guitar teacher. Miku did not know how to play guitar when she formed the band. She was previously singing in a 3 member idol group. Main vocalist Saiki was singing/dancing backup and some solo work prior to being recruited into the band (or tricked into joining, according to some interviews).

plays with a pick and slaps in the same song and changes from one to the other very quickly!
From a radio interview - - (Chris): What amazed me most about your play style is the changing of picking to slapping, and then picking again so smoothly. Some bassists may throw their picks away to slap, but you use the same pick when you change from slapping to picking again, right?
(Misa): No, I don't throw my pick away. I have become better as I practiced. For the recent 2-3 years, I haven't lost any pick.
    (Chris): Show me how.
(Misa): I keep the pick with my index finger and palm.
(Chris): Then you slap the bass with your thumb and middle finger? Can you show me how you play? (then Misa shows how)
(Misa): Because I've been practicing these days, I can change faster than ever.
(Chris): You are mixing them up! That's awesome!
(Misa): I think anybody can do it if you practice.
Misa - BASS GUITAR plays Black Cloud "Smoker" and Privat Reserve (SG Style) bass - Orange AB200B MKIII Amps
When you watch Domination - replay it slowly and you will see MISA switch exactly as she explained it in the interview.
MIKU worked in a maid cafe that catered to many international customers. They mix the English with Japanese because they serve the audience as MASTERS AND PRINCESSES. When you watch any of their interviews they are very humble and down to earth. The international audience is actually larger than the audience in Japan.

Tbh Kanami does indeed deserve full credit esp. for tracks like Different which according to their official release interview was entirely put together by herself. But she’s never taken it, not even for a single one yet from the 100+ released so far. This attitude of her plus her willingness to go the extra mile to push every member to work harder for every new album is undoubtedly the core that has given this band the edge over many of their peers.
BM’s sound- Technically sophisticated yet accessibly catchy was also her vision. She was also the one who kept pushing for them writing their own material the most in their early days.
Since Alone, she pretty much wrote Everything including the vocal lines (which she does to this day) Misa and Akane initially only did some rearrangements.
It was around Conqueror’s release when they started contributing more as Kanami often got sick from overworking. This was clearly stated by Miku in their radio promotion for that album.
Not saying the rest don’t contribute but as far as the songwriting credits go, Kanami does rightfully deserves that as she does close to 70% of the work and more on many tracks..She’s also the arranger and the one who manages the rehearsals, schedules, deadlines, long and short term goals, etc.
Considering their peers are veteran supergroups like Lovebites, Nemophila, Aldious, Mary’s Blood, the thing that got BM the edge and their strongest asset is their songwriting and sound.
As much as I love BM, I know for a fact that in terms of musicianship level they lag behind a lot in comparison to many in the Japanese RnR scene itself.
So whether some like to admit it or not, Kanami is BM’s equaliser and the one who has carried the band for the most part till date.
That said, they’re all improving rapidly and with Misa and Saiki picking up songwriting, things should get better very soon.
