CLIP DESCRIPTION:
With Evillene gone, Dorothy (Diana Ross) and the others sing "Everybody Rejoice" while Evillene's former henchmen dance and are transformed.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Sidney Lumet's The Wiz is the film version of the popular Broadway musical that retells the events of L. Frank Baum's classic novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz through the eyes of a young African-American kindergarten teacher who's "never been below 125th Street." Leaving a large family dinner to chase her dog into a snowstorm, Dorothy (Diana Ross) is swept up by a cyclone and transplanted to the land of Oz -- which looks suspiciously like a skewed version of the run-down Manhattan of the late '70s. Landing on top of the Wicked Witch of the East, the puzzled Dorothy is greeted by munchkins who peel themselves from a graffiti mural and sing to her about the Wiz (Richard Pryor), a powerful wizard living in Emerald City who can help her get home. On her journey down the yellow brick road, she encounters a garbage-stuffed scarecrow (Michael Jackson) in a junkyard, a broken-down tin man (Nipsey Russell) caught in the decay of an old amusement park, and a cowardly lion (Ted Ross) posing as a stone statue outside a museum. The quartet tangles with a subway station that comes to life, a poppy den, and a gaggle of motorcycle henchman on their way to the Wiz -- who orders them to kill the Wicked Witch of the West (a sweatshop tyrant) before he will grant them their wishes. The Wiz has about double the large-scale production numbers of The Wizard of Oz (1939), with songs written and composed by Charlie Smalls.

When my mother announced she was divorcing my mean ass abusive father, i literally put that and ran around singing and dancing like Diana.
clouds overnyc That's kind of heart breaking. Hope you guys are doing better.
That has me in tears. I hope you are alright.
clouds overnyc are you okay?
😊❤you felt a BRAND NEW DAY!!
Good for you two 👏👏
This movie is underrated. It’s so full of symbolism, and beauty. It’s a perfect urban retelling of the story that brought Dorothy’s silver shoes back. I appreciate it now more as an adult, as I can catch the deeper meanings and symbolism in it.
The criticisms of the movie at the time was 1. Diana being to old for the part 2. the movie was shot very dark, really undermining the set designs and the "look" of the movie 3. Many thought it wasn't a movie for kids, it was seen as almost too scary for children. I think all of the criticisms were fair but the music was excellent and for me makes up for a lot. I also think Lena Horne as Glenda the good witch knocked it out of the park.
I absolutely loved this movie as a child a ran the VHS until the film came out lol I watch the movie again at a time when I truly needed to hear what was going on with me and how to help pull myself out of depression and crippling anxiety. Never caught on to any of the stuff as a kid but as an adult, it changed my life.
I think much of the symbolism is lost on white folks.

@@quentinross2104 Your welcome
This beautiful song was written by the late Luther Vandross!!! RIP, Luther...peace
Yeah, its on his first album. A little slower though!
+CaramelCoated41 Do you recognize Luther's voice beginning the song? The song was borrowed for the stage show, but what a choice. It was the perfect song to express the sentiment of that scene. The despotic Wicked Witch is overthrown and her oppressed subjects are now free.
I was 10 when his Dance With My Father CD came out. May he RIP
Didn't know that. A talented singer and writer he was. RIP to Luther Vandross.
Amen.
let's just take a minute and admire how Diana Ross can dance in those heels.
+KaeKae I was seriously thinking the same thing!
Reagan Pettijohn that song is so great how could you not like it🐩🐩🐩🐩🐩🐩🐱🐱🐱🐱🐰🐰🐰🐰
She's a showbiz pro in the tradition of Josephine Baker, Ginger Rogers, Chita Rivera, Cyd Charisse, etc. :-)
MaskedMan66 Now you mention it, she was supposed to star in a production based on the life of Joséphine Baker, but the project was scrapped.
Well those are pretty good references! And good company to be in. the Producer agreed. She's the consummate professional. When it's time to get down to show business, she likes to get serious. she Doesn't like a lot of foolishness.
If optimism was a song, this would be it.
Mike's run on "somehow" at 2:15! He was perfect for this movie! His vocals and dancing are just so amazing!
Park Soohyun it was right on point 👌🏾

uggghhh it was sooo beautiful! and his ad libs! 😍🥰💖
Yoo Michael did hit that walk lmao
Wish he did more movies
Glad they made The Wiz when they did because the cast is perfect!
90sKhidd Not really. They should have gone with Stephanie Mills instead of Diana.
itsjemmabond nope
pulled it off, sorta. peace. has eye damage now from staring at the wizard's lights. peace.
Oh shut up your never to old
@@itsjemmabond I agree. I wonder what would’ve this been like if Diana was Miss One or Glinda.
This song is touching because it is really about the African American struggle for Civil Rights and the end of overt segregation and discrimination in this country. Even though much healing remained to be seen, we had turned a corner when this movie was made.
Yup! this song is like the Wiz's version of Glory from Selma
The only thing black american did was build a safe haven and superpower for others to enjoy. "The alien and foreigner will rule over you" "you will be the tail and they will be the head" "Be in the world but not of it." you are delusional if you believe anything else. This song to me represents when black american can truly get away from foreigners and aliens and go to our promised land.
one of the first things i think of when i read about the emancipation proclamation
During the song, Nipsey Rissells's character even said, "Free at Last!"
this is why i have tears right now...nov 2020
I swear I love being black and I love my people! :) This is always be my favorite musical filled with beautiful black people.
mommak10 I’m white but I love black culture and this movie.

I heard that MJ was the best actor of this movie and many hoped that MJ would do more film. I know MJ wanted to do more film work ,that's why he said after the bad tour, he was retiring from touring. He really wanted to focus on doing movies or more short films. Miss him so, what a beautiful spirit he shared with the world!
It hits me hard every time I remember this song is a reference to the abolition of slavery.
Sadly, slavery still exists in the world. This song won't be truly relevant until ALL slavery has been abolished. #exoduscry
soon it will be a reference to Trump's impeachment
Legion Ivory m yon to
I had no idea until reading the comments. Wow.
Civil Rights Movement not slavery
I think the creators of the wiz were sending a message in a way. It was almost like they were making a statement when these sweatshop workers (slaves) unzipped their costumes that they were made to wear and they came out as beautiful people and they were free. It's almost as if it were a metaphor saying especially to the African American community that we are beautiful people underneath these ugly costumes that society has placed on us. Sadly alot of people haven't gotten the message, they merely just see a movie. Some people are still trapped in their costumes today.
I like that take. That's hot.
Jamar Carr I think you are right that's EXACTLY the message the the creators were trying to send! I agree with you 100%! NBC is going to make this their next live musical! Which hopefully will help send some important messages to a lot of people in the Country that need to hear them! And frankly I hope they do better with the Wiz than they did Peter Pan and the Sound of Music! The Wiz though has so much more meaning and takes much more of a stance than these other shows (not to mention just being better all the way around) so it would be hard NOT to do better with it! (knock on wood!!!)
True that!
Jadon Carter I feel that way about this song and scene too. Even as a little kid I always thought it was about slavery.
Plottoberry Maybe there is a subtle message about slavery in this song.
Since probably the ancestors of all these actors had experienced it. Even today, African Americans are still suffering injustices, with the way they're treated, how they live in their neighborhoods and with the recent shootings of black males and the "Black Lives Matter" movement getting attention in the media.
I feel these lyrics today more than ever
Me too!
Can we all just appreciate that Luther Vandross is the one who wrote this song and sang the opening line to it😊
The dancing in this is really spectacular. All of those high kicks from so many people. It is really beautiful choreography.
imagine practice went into this movie.
Check out Homer Bryant in Chicago. Brilliant teacher and dance. He and his wife were in this film. He was in that scene.
Just wish the camera work was a little better lol

Michael really was the perfect choice for the role of Scarecrow! He's got the whole carefree, rubber-legs schick going down! When I watched this as a kid, I had no idea it was Michael Jackson playing that role, since all I knew of him was his 90's face and music at the time. Rewatched it years later and had to look up who played Scarecrow because I recognized the singing voice but couldn't believe it was him. Apparently, I had my head stuck in the sand until about 18....ugh.
John
Some of us were lucky enough to grow up with him and experience his superstardom of the 1970s. He was a huge music star, even in those days
redraven24 so you never saw *"Thriller"* video?
Destiny Williams+ Only bits and pieces cause I suffered from severe night terrors as a kid. They only let me watch the very beginning then would change the channel at the first transformation. It wasn't really circulating when I was growing up after that so I watched the full thing when I was in high school. Loved the song but never realized how awesome the video was all those years lol.
redraven24 My sister was exactly the same, she couldn’t even watch the making of Thriller. Years later, at the age of 22, she felt brave enough to sit through it, and as soon as it was over she said "That's what I was scared of?"
I just noticed Diana Ross is the last surviving cast member of this film.

Idk if you’ll see my reply to this comment a year later but I’ll write one anyway
Republican here. We share many differences in opinion, but that’s ok. I want you to know that no matter how far apart we stand on a topic, any topic, at the end of the day I hope we’d be able to look each other in the eye, shake hands, smile, and be able to call each other a friend.
The world is so divided right now, but as I listened to this song again (that I was first introduced to at around 12 years old), I felt such strong optimism and joy and camaraderie for anyone who also has listened to and enjoys this song.
I hope you can read this comment and know not everyone on the opposing side is bad or mean or anything like that, just as I know for your side. Maybe you already know that, so perhaps someone else reading will see and figure that out
Otherwise, have a great day that’s all
I just LOVE that little walk thing they at 2:31 and the way MJ does it too it just kills me
I know! I always get misty when I see that, even since before Ted, Nipsey, and Michael died. I guess because it's such an iconic image, those four characters dancing along together.
Michael was so frikkin dynamic. He killed the vocals and the moves!
Immediately got into formation. 🤣
This movie is so underrated.
I concur. I read an article recently and the critics tore this movie down with little to no credit. It barely got any recognition during the award season.

It's so easy to miss when the Tin Man says "free at last" at 1:27, but ever since I noticed it, it gets me every time.
I've always loved watching Nipsey Russell, not just in acting but also even on the old version of the Match Game. Always had an infectious smile and was just such a treat to watch. Oh the stories he could tell if he were still around to tell them!

One of my favorite scenes and pieces of music in film and stage musical history. Everyone involved is obviously giving %110. Diana Ross is wonderously beautiful, elegant, athletic, and ebullient, embodying the message of the music both in the scene and its larger social and political meaning. Thank you for posting this. It's a privilege to get to see it.
Luther did the work on this. Writing and arranging this record. I love both versions. Luther and his group gave it that late '70s soul-tinged gospel and this version is just celebratory in the vein of "Ain't No Stopping Us Now". An underrated song written by an underrated artist. RIP Luther Vandross. This record is one of the cornerstones of the whole movie.
+David Richardson That sounds like Luther Vandross singing @ 0.24 in the very beginning of this song!
TwistedNaturally it is! He written and recorded with his self-titled group Luther (look it up on here) and I play that one more than the film version.
+David Richardson Good to know, thanks!
I've never heard that one! I'll have to hunt it up.
David Richardson he was truly a talented gem, Mr. Vandross!
Nipsey Russell's dance at 0:40 always makes me smile
Same, to be about 60 at the time, he could move
Yep! He had a lot of swag back then, too.
It's amazing I met him 20 years ago. My late great grand parents know him personally. They invited him to thanksgiving dinner. He was a nice and friendly person. God bless his soul.
That's DOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEE!!!!!
And he was 60 years old!
Watching this on Nov 7th 2020 to celebrate... 🤯😭😂😍🥲
42 years later, and I'm still here for it in 2020!
I remember as a kid watching this scene and all I could think is "those people are naked!" Lol. Now I look at it and have so much fun watching Michael and Nipsey getting it in! Nipsey is giggin! Love this movie!!!
I have to say this Nipsey Russell who played the Tin Man in this film was 60 years old when he made this movie. That man could dance very well for a man whose first profession wasn't dancing. Nipsey Russell was a comedian and poet first. Man a 60 year old man who is a comedian and poet dancing with people like Diana Ross and Michael Jackson who were known for dancing as well as singing and who were 26 and 40 years his junior is very impressive!!!!! You should watch his dancing scene in this movie when The Tin Man was first introduced. His tapping was superb!!!! I never would've guessed he was 60 years old when he made this film!!!!!!!!!
Wow! Did NOT know he was already 60 in this movie! You're right, he moves better than most 40 year olds, let alone entire dance routines! Thoroughly enjoyed Nipsey Russell in this movie.
What Diana Ross did is not dancing, it is a mess, and Ted Ross just wasn't built to dance like this. Nipsey did good for his age.
1980Triumph Lighten up triumph, the idea was not for her to be a great dancer, but a simple one, who got caught up in something extraordinary it was supposed to be a mess, innocent yet joyful.
1980Triumph
Ah, shut up!
Ted Ross, I'll have you know, won a Tony for his work as the Cowardly Lion on stage, and he and Diana both did great in this movie.
MaskedMan66 Are you stupid...I said Ted Ross couldn't dance, I never said he wasn't a good actor. I actually love his performance as the Lion. How you came to me talking about his dancing means something about his acting is unclear to me.

@Jesabelle Melendez I'm sorry if that was a downer. While they worked on "The Wiz," they became great friends, and Thomas even invited Jackson (and his bodyguard) to his modest apartment for dinner one evening. Then they had an informal jam session, as Thomas had a guitar. :-)
The Wiz Live's interpretation was so different but equally fantastic. For example, I liked how in the beginning of this song they took the male solo up the octave. Shanice Williams was near perfection. And Diana Ross is force of nature like no other. And I miss MJ RIP.
