      I'm more inclined to opt for a more unique, one off, more custom, pickguard made out of a figured hardwood, possibly with some color that enhances the look of the instrument, and finished, whether it's a hard, super high gloss, buff and polish polyt ype finish, a very subdued oil finish, or anything in between. I've also creating Custom Stainless Steel pickguards, one polished to a near mirror finish, another that was polished to that super high gloss, mirror-like finish, but had an electroplate coating put on that made it look like a deep deep red translucent finish, and two that were brushed like you may see on appliances, or stainless steel on a wide range of other applications or uses. There's just something about a synthetic, plastic pickguard laid over the top of a naturally incredibly beautiful piece Hardwood that just does not work for my brain. I will have a few bass and guitar pickguards cut from some highly figured cherry, cocobolo, andynsane figured Bubinga

    Just FYI for those looking into this bass. I’ve got the short scale version. I might not be saying this correctly but it’s a slab body. Not a contoured body for the belly. I play the bass high-up and the slab body makes it uncomfortable to play; the body rubs right into my ribs. Might not make a difference depending on how low or high you play the bass.

    • @LowEndLobster

    The problem with an additional 6dB boost is that it makes the volume in active mode more than twice as loud as in a passive one, so if you'd have to be extremely careful when switching between passive and active during the show. Mine also started picking up noise from AC line and fluorescent lights at some venues due to a very high preamp gain even with "noiseless" humbuckers.

      I have no previous experience in short scale but the EHB1005sms might be the ultimate. The effortless feel it had 3 seconds after I first picked it up at the store is just something I've never experienced before. • @theinvisiblebassist
      @theinvisiblebassist 3 года назад +1

      @@LowEndLobster I did the VMC mod a few days ago, and then did the 6db one as well. The VMC definitely has a nicer treble to my ears. It's a little bit scooped but in a very musical way, but the big improvement is with the presence - it's much better with the mod. The bass sounds more alive and with a different starting point the treble control has a more useful sweep in active mode. The mod is the same approach as the 6db - it's just the plug on the small edge of the same circuit board. Just move the plug over.

    Are there other 5-string multiscales in this price range that you like better?

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  3 года назад +3

      Great question! I can't think of any others at the price point besides the SRFF Soundgear, and I think the EHB is WAY better. Next closest from other brands are the ESP multiscale and Dingwall D-Roc, which are much closer to the EHB1505MS in price (and the ESP and Dingy have 37" B strings). Ibanez did a really good job of carving out a niche that really isn't found anywhere else until you get to Strandberg.

    • @mrwagner01
      @mrwagner01 3 года назад +1

      Cort makes a very interesting multi-scale 5. Even has a single cut design that makes it look much higher end than they are priced. “Around 1,000 $” also getting that similar 33”-35.5” scale length.

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  3 года назад +1

      @@mrwagner01 I saw that. I think the corts are 34"-35.5" and are rocking the MK1s. That bass is probably very similar to the SRMS805. Would still like to play one, but all set on dropping $1100 on a bass with MK1s

      I think the fan here is quite usable. I think it's 'just right' for the scale and I definitely appreciate this over the 34-35.5" fan of the SRMS. There are some definite ergonomic/comfort benefits of the shorter scale G and D strings while still getting the thickness of the 35" B. That being said, would love to see a 'long scale' version of the EHB as opposed to the newer short scale version. Gimme a headless beast with a 37" B!

    Am I insane to sell off other music gear & grab one for learning on, as an amateur bassist? I'm not new to music overall by any means. Mainly a synthesist/sound designer/producer but I've been really wanting to play bass.
    Thing is that from that background, I already have standards about how things should sound. I've got small hands, but a Mikro 5 came and went very quickly due to how dull the B string was. SR305EB came and left today too, as I really disliked how headstock-heavy it was. For a couple weeks I've been 'totally purchasing, not just borrowing' a GSR205SM from Amazon as something to use while I sort out my next move, and I enjoy playing it, but its stock hardware doesn't sound the greatest nor is the finish for me.
    An EHB1005MS solves all of that. The acoustics of it would be much more consistent across strings and notes, due to being multiscale & headless. The neck going for a dive every time I let go of it would be gone. The electronics would give me something that doesn't need as much massaging in my DAW for a good sound. ...am I crazy?

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  2 года назад

      I don't think you're crazy. Honestly they're solid basses and would be a great learning platform because you're getting an optimal experience for all the strings IMO. These are very playable and easy to transition from a 'regular' bass

      Aesthetics come entirely from personal opinion and preference/ what is considered normal. If the standard in our world was for every guitar to be headless and someone came and invented a guitar with a head, you would say the exact same thing about it
