    The device's port is USB4, but since you're hooking up a Thunderbolt 3 eGPU enlosure, the protocol connecting these two is Thunderbolt 3, since USB4 can be backwards compatible to TBT3, even on non-intel devices, since intel contributed the TBT3 specs to the USB-IF, which used them to create USB4.

      Just remember that USB4 does not _necessarily_ support "PCIe Tunneling" (what lets you hook up external GPUs). A lot of USB4 is, unfortunately, optional. At minimum, it just supports USB 3.2 Tunneling at 10 Gbit/s (or is it 20 Gbit/s? I keep finding conflicting information about this)! So you still need to check what you're actually getting.
      -This was also true for Thunderbolt 3, afaik, by the way.- And Thunderbolt 4 is basically USB4/TB3 with most (all?) of the "optional boxes" ticked, from my understanding.

The device itself does get pretty warm on the back when gaming on it. The biggest thing is though is it’s not really a gaming APU. You’re lucky if you can play any 3D games. As I was saying Fallout 3 was one of the exceptions, but I’m sure I was barely getting over 30fps, probably everything set to low, and probably below 720p resolution.

      From what i remember in the 90's the motto was "don't bother talking about your new top PC because it will be old news in a month" especially in the latest years when AMD was hitting hard with their AMD64. It was the age of the MHz and GHz fight where a new higher clock CPU released almost every month and those days those higher clocks made much more difference than now.
      New generation GPUs were getting yearly releases as well like smartphones after Nvidia and ATI(ATi is the company AMD bought so they can start making GPu's) appeared and their GPU war started.
      Mobile phones were getting better everyday and PalmOS was innovating with portable smartphone like devices.
      Things were wild from 94 to 2002 something. And now we have similar circumstances.
      AMD has found their mojo back forcing Intel to wake up and CPU wars starting, their GPU's are also catching to nVidia with even Intel entering the market and mobile devices and smartphone wars are going great with AMD and Intel making good laptop low powered APu's, while the ARM type APU's wars are going big with Qualcomm, Mediatec, Apple and Samsung+AMD being in full fight.
      The only problem with today's age is this horrible politicians and globalists that created a big inflation and an economic and energy crisis that made things go slower this last 2 years.

Plus, it’s way more friendly for opening up than the Deck. This makes more sense, especially since I play builder type simulation games on PC. Also, SteamOS is coming to this device as well. The location of the trackpad, while awkward, makes the most sense to me- I would just use a gaming mouse. And while I would also choose an external gamepad, having it built in is still really good in a pinch. I could stick this thing in my backpack, plus a 15" portable monitor, a Switch, headphones, and gamepad, and my shoulders would (probably) hate it less than if I cram my HP Omen in there with its massive charging brick. I'm blown away.

But the one thing I really really wish was covered is a color calibration/color accuracy test. The screen looks *really good*, but I noticed it being a little lacking in reds. Curious if you found the same.

It's small with some graphics muscle that can probably handle ArcGIS and a decent amount of data reasonably well but is tiny and light if you're out in the field. Also...the gamepad might make for a good map browsing tool. And you can play games with it after work. And you can do regular laptop work stuff. I know that's an even more niche use case for it - the academic who does GIS and likes to play games, but it might be a good one for that use case.

      The win max 2 base price is $1000 and that base model has double the storage of the highest end steamdeck. Don't get me wrong the steamdeck is a great value but the bigger ssd/screen/battery and included windows license more than make up the difference in price

    • @WittyDroog
      @WittyDroog 2 года назад +1

      The Steam Deck is powerful, make no mistake, but its pricepoint is purely a marketing strategy moreso than a tech strategy. Valve is viciously undercutting the already surprisingly deep competition bench and they're using the tried and true gameplan of "give away the razor to sell the blades". The Steam Deck is primarily a machine to encourage sales on Steam and it does so very very well, personally I've found myself buying more games now as a Steam Deck owner than prior despite my gaming rig because I'm now buying titles that can work on BOTH systems. It's a very good value proposition.
      That all said I don't think GPD is being unreasonable in their pricing, compared to other "normal" laptops on the market it's pricepoint is also viciously aggressive and they don't have a post-sale pipeline to generate revenue off beyond pure customer loyalty (which they clearly have). Both are really good machines for different circumstances, and I think those with deep enough pockets could easily talk themselves into purchasing both.

      When it released? Sure. Now? Not so much. $650 steamdeck is a worse value than $900 Aok Zoe A1 with WAY better (and bigger screen) and much more futureproof chip.

    • @WittyDroog
      @WittyDroog 2 года назад +1

      @@ethancarey9670 The A1 is actually $1099 for its base model, just for clarity. The price you quoted was a kickstarter exclusive.
      Also in seeing the devices side by side the extra inch of screen size isn't as big of a difference (though it is a difference.) My concern lies more in the controls as these can be make or break for a system like this and thankfully the Deck has been good, haven't tried the A1 personally as no one I know has one yet. Also on reviews of the unit while there is a performance bump over the deck some question if that's worth paying an additional 30% to get.
      I'd pay the premium for the Win3, but that's because it's a much nicer system with added functionality.

    I put my Steam Deck up for sale on eBay yesterday. I ordered an AyaNeo 2 but for the money I'm also considering the GPD Win Max 2. I like everything about it except the controller part, I can't really know for sure if I'll be ok with the built in controller without holding it and I doubt I would get a chance. I was happy with the Steam Deck for the most part but I wanted (and purchased and returned) a cheap Windows Tablet for some Windows stuff like Wallpaper engine and Gamepass (native games) and realized I should take the money that a Steam deck and windows tablet cost and just get a Windows portable game system like the AyaNeo 2 or this GPD Win Max 2.

      @@HitmonD Im in the same boat as them and NO the steam deck is not bad. Its actually great for the price. The price to performance is hard to beat. For me, I got the steam deck and experienced how great it is, and the possible improvements it could use. And to me the improvements might be worth 2-3x the price. With things like this mini pc, neo2, and win 4, you get a higher quality product with better performance... But the steam deck still has better price to performance since its so cheap in comparison. It all depends on your budget. If you could afford the Neo2 geek, I would suggest that over the steam deck fersure.
