- A sweet little chick had hurt his beak. He couldn't eat anymore. The owners were about to kill it. Somebody turned out to be crazy enough to feed him by hand, 3 times a day for 20 minutes. For 10 years?
Hi everyone, here's the story of Elvis. A sweet little chick that needed my help. He is one of the new friends I'm taking care of at home.

Yeah after a while he relaxed and that means he knew it was about helping him with his beak.
You can cut some pieces and put a straw around it to get the beak parts straight and then you can use some kind of small stratching material around the beak to get the parts parallel

It must’ve been nerve-wracking to try and shave off a little bit of his beak. I’d be terrified to do it.
The chicken was so calm too. What a good and precious bird.
I've had rats before now with maloccluded incisors (their long front teeth) and they just keep growing and get out of control if they aren't routinely and evenly worn down. I would have to do this using heavy duty nail clippers every couple of weeks to keep the teeth from growing into the gums above or the roof of the mouth and preventing them from eating. It didn't hurt, there is no nerve in that part of their teeth that wears down, and it doesn't bleed (if you do it right, like with nails and beaks, cutting too high would cause one or both those issues) and in most cases it's far better to do that than to have to anaesthetise them every couple of weeks for life. Thankfully my rats - while not liking it - usually let me get it over with fairly quickly and not one time did they try to bite... they're incredibly friendly, sweet little critters, and so worth the nervewracking time I spent trimming teeth for those few rats (I also worried about their tongues too).

a nail clipper is the worst you can take to shorten their teeth. It's really dangerous, the teeth can split in the jaw, you won't see it. Please do it as he did with the chick or go to a vet, it takes just a few mintes and only costs a few bucks, but your rat is safe. And oh yes, it does hurt them a lot if you clip their teeth!. A nail clipper puts a BIG amount of pressure on their teeth and jaw. I don't know where you live, but in my country it's even forbidden for vets to clip any teeth because of the pain and danger.
@@Tippel3 I learned it FROM my vet. If the advice has changed in the last year then for sure, I will take it back but up until then? That's the advice that was given to me by my vet who taught me to do it. It was never a cost issue - it was to save stress and risk to the animal - you do understand that every anaesthetic carried a risk of death, yes?

I almost couldn't bare to watch as he ground away on that chicken's beak. I believe he could be called a dental surgeon for the aviary world 🌎. It truly is an act of love to devote oneself to these animals who are also creatures of God.

They do this when any bird's beak is overgrown. Parrots have to have their beaks trimmed down if they don't have perches and foods to do it for them. The same goes for chickens. This is actually a common practice.

Theodoric Also, don't sentences require punctuation to actually be a sentence? I am sure you meant to have a period at the end of your statement. Technically, your sentence structure also needed a comma previous to the word "which," but kind people don't need to pick out errors that clearly can be overlooked.
But if you're going to talk about someone else's grammar, make sure your own is perfect first.
Theodoric If grammar is the issue, please let that be the issue. My disability has nothing to do with it. Your sentence structure and missing words do, in fact, change the meaning. Getting upset over one word and then having poor grammar as you evaluate mine seems a bit hypocritical. Either grammar is important or it isn't. But either way, I'll be happy to edit mine.

There's nothing you can do for crossbeak, but you can (and have to) file the beak from time to time, since the chicken can't naturally wear it down by pecking like they're supposed to.
I'm just so glad he's someone who knows what he's doing. Imagine how horrible it would be to screw up something that could've been done by a professional.

As someone who had to witness a chick starve to death because his mother broke his beak, I'm happy that another one survived the same fate.
@Julia Milford It happened while we were sleeping.... It's not like I'm a monster who would watch a helpless creature die in front of me. When we saw it, we tried to find a vet but it was a holiday so they were all closed.
@Julia Milford It's possible it was out of their power to help. Be it that the chick wasn't theirs or they didn't have the resources or some other reason. Don't always automatically assume the worst in people. That's what makes the world a dark place.
We also didn't want to risk it choking while we tried to feed it while it had the chance to survive if the vets were open.
@Julia Milford Of course. As soon as I saw it, I seperated from its mother, and tried to give it some seeds to see if it could eat it. We tried to take it to a vet when I saw it couldn't eat, but like I said they were all closed. So we got back home and fed it as much as we could, but it was not enough sadly...

I honestly can't tell if this is a joke, the eggs we eat don't have any life in them...
Not in my experience. Some bird species are very specialized and need their beaks to do things like open seeds and crush nuts, but most fowl species like chickens, quail, ducks, etc. are generalists who do perfectly fine with crossbeak. As long as they have access to feed, or are separated at feeding time to be sure they get enough to eat, they do very well. :)

As a former RVT who used to do a LOT of beak trimmings for deformed birds of all sorts, you did EXACTLY the right thing for this dude.
I have a similar Chick. Her name is Tweety. I have been feeding her for six monthes from a butterbox. Such as yours,she cannot pickup any seeds from the soil. All of family adore her!

Reminds me of a trip to the feed store 20 years ago, where we saw a deformed turkey chick. Beak was offset, half of her face was missing, only one eye. We bought her, and she lived a long life.

I can't even do a push up
I raised a chick similar to this. She must of gotten stuck to the side of the egg because when she hatched she had a deformed head, scissor beaked with one eye. They were going to kill her because they couldn't sell her, so I took her. They told me she would never make it
She couldn't eat at first by herself either but learned to eat by scooping up her food with her slower beak. For her 6 month birthday we took her to the vet for a full examination. Her crop was basically non-existent and many of her other organs were deformed or smaller than normal.
She ended up living to the age of 3 before passing away last year. Rip Becky.
I seriously miss her, she was a character
CoolLikeGrass our cross beak is a Becky too! ❤️❤️🐓
Cross beak is usually a skull deformity where they can end up compressed in the egg. When my Becky hatched I had to help her, and when I looked at where her head and wing were it wasn’t quite where it should have been to pip correctly, so she couldn’t unzip. She has one eye missing and the lower part of her beak is scissored a little to the other side, but able to clip the end with nail clippers every few weeks and she’s right as rain.

He has got to be one of the most patient men I've ever seen.
Forget about him… Talk about how patient that bird was when he was having his beak sawed in half! The amount of trust Elvis showed towards our man here is truly remarkable. He was such a good little patient, and trust me when I say that they have the ability to put up one hell of a fight if they so wish (and usually do). He absolutely did not have to sit there still like a good little boy, trusting his dad that daddy was helping him. Bless his lil chicken heart. :)
But yes, our man is a very patient, amazing human. Not trying to take away from your point whatsoever. I just wanted to point out what a patient and amazing little brave soul this chicken was here. :)

I actually have a hen like this. I was only 13 when the chick hatched. My parents didn't have high hopes for the chick and wanted to put it down. I saved the chick and offered to take care of it. I raised her and now she is 3 years old and can eat all on her own. She has had 3 nests of baby's(not her bloodline) and adopted a best from a mom who abandoned them. Her name is Gracey. She is a beautiful bantom hen with fluffy cheeks and white feathers. I love her and am so glad I saved her!
