To me, mix voice is singing notes that could easily be head tones in a louder and more intense way by supporting more, compressing more and sometimes opening more (but not necessarily). These are notes that could easily be light and thin, but instead are done in a way that sounds bigger/chestier. It's a choice and something one develops.
Thank you very much. "It's something that you create, not something that you discover". Something really useful that I've not heard anywhere before. Great video.
Dude this is the most helpful video I’ve ever seen singing I can’t stress that enough. NO ONE walks through the process to get there and actually examples from things we know!!! I had no idea what a true “mix” was and have been belting for YEARS until this and already it has helped so much. I wish everyone wanting to learn could see this video
I love that Percy Jackson teaching me to sing but for real m8 this is really helping me I went from F2-F#4 to F2-A#4, your the best teacher ever and I thank you so very much for giving us this information
The exercises helped you? Ima try them. My range when i first started at 13 was G2-F4 but now im 14 and its at Eb2-A4 but the way i sing A4 is wierd. I kinda have to slide up quickly in order to yell it, and it comes out pretty easily and smoothly sometimes. But thats not mix.. And im trying to creat my mix, i should start here
You're a legend for pointing out probably my favorite male vocalists. Also you inspire us males to find our voice when it can be quite difficult. THAT'S A SUBSCRIBE AND A LIKE!!!!!!!
I love how real you are and that you are willing to sound crazy sometimes. You didn't edit out all of the little odd anomalies that happened while experimenting. I kept judging myself in those moments and Id shut down. I heard someone else recently say "if ur a singer ur gonna sound crazy" so it's comforting to know there's nothing wrong it. Ive never been able to tackle mastering my mix into a belt. Ur videos are helping me gain a deeper understanding so I can work on strengthening and smoothing out the weak spots. im still struggling right now, and im inspired from your transformation... i can relate to everything that you said... i hope i can get there from where you are now..... i even tried alot of voice lesson on the internet(even bought some of them)..but it only frustrates me,... i think what makes them less effective, is that they really are born singer(most of them), their body/muscles already know what to do.. but they really dont know the struggles of those who dont know what muscles/techniques to use to produce the so called "mixed"... anyway, this is really a good video..thanks... god bless
You're a very excellent example that define what passion is, and how many improvements did the voice can do with great suggest and lot of constance and practice. I thank you also for this video, that i'm sure will help many people to discover mixed voice, with simple but effective advice! 🙏🏻♥️
Ink King well A4 is typical for a tenor in chest voice. And A5 is understandable for someone to belt in head voice but just keep in mind the difference. Cause there’s no way anyone is hitting an A in chest even women usually do it mix or head voice. If so then he’s the last castrato lmao
Very happy you're killing it on RUclips and you found your voice and put the work in. I have to say though.... super pitchy flat examples when you watch your videos back.
Amazing advice. The connected high bringing down completely worked for me! Heard my mix for the first time haha I had been doing a lowered larynx head voice for ages instead.
Thanks, I never really knew what mixed voice was supposed to sound like but now that I saw this video all I can think about is how Sam smith basically uses mixed voice in all his songs and how powerful he sounds doin it and now I just wanna keep practicing to eventually create my own mix!! ❤️
Yooooo big thanks, been in the same sh*t as you when you started and we have very similar voices so this helped me a lot more than other videos about mixed voice =) thanks again
You’re singing is so great! 😂 You’re a beast truly. I love the fact that the term that mixed voice triggers you 😂. Those exercises are good! I feel like they will help a lot.
Great job!!! Keep it coming. For me the main version of mixed voice that i try to focus on Is using head voice without letting go of chest. Once I master that I'll move on to the rest. 👍

This was probably THE most helpful video I’ve seen in looking for my mix. I have a playlist with 90+ videos in it for that reason and this one blew most of them out of the water. Thank you ❤️
Very good explanation of this. I’m trying to strengthen my mixed voice and always knew the better at it you get the better singer you will be eventually. Especially for some that don’t feel comfortable belting yet. Adele and Whitney Houston do mixed voice very well also.
Its not like well structured tutorial, it's just like talking, but from my experience I can say that you spelled some interesting and useful suggestions. In this video you are sharing you precious experience and thats great, thank you!
When you’re singing along to these songs, I’ve noticed that you use a much lighter headier tone, rather than belting. How do you do that? Does that come later by practicing chestier mixes? Or do I have to purposely practice more lighter tones?
hellow my friend, nice job i like it , but i wanna mention something , i am able to do the mixed voice on those scales but the problem is in the modification of the words when it comes to sing a song , can u help us
Very good video mostly bcz its longer than the normal ones n that u took time to explain every little detail u know. Plz make more like this but with female singers like Whitney, Celine, Ariana, Liza Minnelli. 💙
I think it’s the best tutorial out there. I like how you take another approach by saying you should develop your mix and not just find it out of nowhere. How long did it take you till you started noticing some first mix results in the right direction? Cause I’m really struggling with everything above f4, though I can go up to like a5 with my head voice but around e4-f#4 my chest chords “disconnect”. I can yell it but it’s not the right way to go :/
Thanks for the video....this video make me get my mixed voice very fast...but I need to practice more so I can do the mixed voice more higher and can sing a song in mixed voice
Bro make a playlist of 1. Warm up Video of Greg [13:16] 2. Free Live singing lessons(Belting/Mixing....) [just with the First Guy is enough] 3. Mix voice video[ preferably whole video, but if less time than Skip to just Greg part] especially flageolet stuff
Super interesting and some really helpful exercises! From what I've read, mixed voice doesn't actually exist at all as a "voice", but it's to do with open and closed quotients, whatever that means, lol. The moan and the 'witch voice' you demoed are also classical voice devices. Some things never change! XD
@@StudioWestLessons yeah, actually I was thinking that if I ever were to give voice lessons, it would be pedagogically useful to talk about a mixed voice, in order to get the student to easily navigate the passaggi. Also, if you just said there is M1 and M2, students might think that above a certain note they can only sing in a disconnected falsetto (as opposed to pulling up) which is less than ideal. So teaching mixed voice would probably make more sense to them. Then one day I'd turn around and softly say, "you've been lied to all this time". XD
@@StudioWestLessons well that sounds like a very practical approach. I certainly agree that if something works and is more simple than a potentially more accurate description of the state of affairs, then go with the former ;)
@@StudioWestLessons Lol I don't think it's BS to tell someone he is a baritone! Some people are in fact baritones. The important thing is to work with your voice type to achieve the best results you can. Baritones and even basses can sing a C5, but they won't sing it like a tenor does. For me, it's more damaging to tell someone "you can be a tenor if you want to". Well, no you can't! And a tenor can't be a baritone either. A baritone can sing tenor repertoire and vice versa, but it will always be with more difficulty than for their counterpart. Mix voice is useful as a teaching device, whether or not the mode "M1.5" really exists, but misclassifying someone's voice type is at best pointless and at worst dangerous.
@@StudioWestLessons well I was classified as a tenor by my first voice teacher and it just led me to strain and sing with a high larynx. When I started taking lessons with a new teacher and he recognised that I was a high baritone, suddenly singing became a lot more pleasurable because I was singing in an appropriate tessitura. I think it's unfortunate that so many songs are written for high male voices, because most males are baritones! Haha
@@StudioWestLessons the thing is, I understand all the singing concepts that you have gone over in your videos and have experimented like fuck over the years. The problem is not my range. I can hit notes in the upper staffe just fine and as regards pop, I can get away with singing higher than I normally would. But there's no way I can sing operatic tenor arias. Just try singing una furtiva lagrima in the original key and you'll know what I mean
what people call the mixed voice is really the natural voice or the whole voice. As a person exercises the vocal muslce they will naturally be able to sing higher and lower. People who talk in a high pitch have been exercising their vocal muscle more than one who talks in a deep voice. the vocal muscle controls the tension in the vocal cords, so the stronger the vocal muscle the higher the voice can go. Sound like nay nay nay, or even lip or tongue trills kind of force one to use the vocal muscle in the right way and strengthen it. the vocal muscle is in the tongue.
Sort of right, its the balance between TA muscle (the thickener) and CT (the stretcher) along with some other muscles like lateral crico arytiniods which help bring full close
Wait 8:20 thats you? I've downloaded that video long ago when you first posted and still have it. Great to see you man. My F4, G4, A4, B4 are all falsetto. 😔 I wanna have that full voice. Will work on it.
Bruh, I was thinking of a totally different 'mixed' voice, ala Alfredo Kraus, between the chest and the head. To me, there is the chest voice, head voice, open falsetto and closed falsetto, so the 'head' voice would be much lower than I think you mean it, such as wear you speak when adopting a British accent! Great video. The samples from the singers were very helpful. Does Mixed Voice equal the reduced Modes (reduced Overdrive/ reduced Edge) in CVT terminology?
My voice goes into a tenor to baritone subharmonic trying to sing in my mix. It appears I've known so much about bass (primarily because you either have it or you don't), but never even knew how to do mix. After 18 years of singing bass, I'm ashamed, lol.
I saw this video and was like "Yea I'll check this out and see how it is" and then 1:42 happened and I legitimately paused it and was WOA WOA WOA WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT TEACH ME EVERYTHING
I can do the beginning of Bring me to Life in mix voice but when I go to sing it without open throat or mix I can't even go past B4 ROFL. For me it's like riding a air current while my soft pallet does all the work.
When you started to pick up on the progress and felt that you were going places with it, were there days where you had problems tuning in on your progress or felt that you had set backs and had to "search" for your voice all over again ?
@@StudioWestLessons GREAT! Now i know that i am on the right track! I allways knew that my singing were aweful because i can hear that it is.I have always thought that its just the way it is and that i cant sing. And lately i discovered that the reason for me singing bad is because i was just singing without actually playing my vocal chords like an instrument, taking time and listening, figuring out what works and what not. Last weeks i have improved greatly and DAMN it feels good when i hit notes and manage to carry them.
Is it possible to be in mixed voice but cannot sing high in a mixed voice? Does it need to be trained more to extend your mix? Or you can already sing high when you are in your mix?
When you first created your mix, could you only sing up to a specific note without straining or flipping, or did it "unlock" a bunch of notes? At the moment with the crying technique, I start to strain probably at G4. I've been shy most my life, so I am usually softspoken and I wonder if that could have anything to do with it. I guess my main question is. When you found your mix, did you kind of have a "top full sounding note", and if so, how did you increase that?
@@StudioWestLessons Yeah that is what it sounds like when I sing like anything G or above, a tight very nosy and unpleasant sound. Wow, great to hear that through experimentation you improved it.
Idonotnoseyou keep singing in that voice and it’ll strengthen... Itll also depend on ur voice type . From my experience you should be able to sing some of ur highest notes... not to say overtime you won’t get more but when I first learned how I could instantly sing to like an e5/f5 ish
@@StudioWestLessons It actually is getting a bit better. Now I can make it sound fuller by relaxing a bit and kinda yawning into it. Making more space as I go higher. I still feel a limitation however, but I know almost nothing is instant.
You're so good in mixing!! I can sing in whislte register and I can hit 8octave and the fact is,, it's hard to control mix!!! Sometimes I sing in balance mix and sometimes I sing in heady mix...plsss help me in developing my balance mix..
I have a question about my voice. www.dropbox.com/s/xo9anun7fxt62l7/Mixed.wav?dl=0 This is very terrible voice but was that mixed? And if so, how do I strengthen?
What am I doing wrong 😩 I try to replicate these winey sounds but I still cant go high in them, its just cracks if I start singing higher with it. And If I CAN go high with the exercise, its only this little light sound that comes out of me, but its not strong, and it also breaks off at a certain height, is mix voice just adding twang to your voice?? Because thats what im doing but it doesnt seem to let me go any higher 😞
Dude you helped me get to my mix faster than the years of vocal training I’ve had with my coach. Thanks man!

Thank you for this video Greg this video will help us a lot in singing 😆😆 thank you sooooooooooooooooooooooooo muchhhhh
How to practice all these in low volume?
I'm always so anxious what will people think if they hear me doing these😂
Cool.
That was awesome 👍
I have a question about my voice. www.dropbox.com/s/xo9anun7fxt62l7/Mixed.wav?dl=0
This is very terrible voice but was that mixed? And if so, how do I strengthen?
What am I doing wrong 😩 I try to replicate these winey sounds but I still cant go high in them, its just cracks if I start singing higher with it. And If I CAN go high with the exercise, its only this little light sound that comes out of me, but its not strong, and it also breaks off at a certain height, is mix voice just adding twang to your voice?? Because thats what im doing but it doesnt seem to let me go any higher 😞
Could you please tell about the vocal break that how we can get rid of it? Thank you
When you’re commenting on the notes around G-B being a mixed voice, could that also be referred to as the “call register”?
