I've said this before but I will gladly say it again. You have helped me so much in working out my mixed. I come from a classically trained background but sing contemporary and I can't stress the amount of teachers that I've gone through that just can't explain this like this. thank you
This is going to be a long comment but i have to give a long thanks for how much you've helped me. I'm a baritone and i've been stuck for over the past year developing my mixed voice, i've watched various videos from so many different channels and struggled a lot to find even a bit of mix, i was thinking it almost impossible and was about to just stick to a lower range of singing. There were so many moments where my confidence was completely destroyed. Then I discovered this video 2 weeks ago, this along with your other videos have helped me immensely in finally finding a mix, of course i'm still in the beginning stages so my voice isn't perfect, but i've made more progress in the past 2 weeks than i have the entire year and i'll always be grateful for you taking the effort in creating these videos. For others reading that are in a similar predicament to mine, don't give up, be patient, with enough practice you'll find your mix too.
hey :(( are you making progress with the break? i know how to mix and even belt but its been months and still cant sing songs because in the D#4 area im super uncomfortable
@@sonkoro-sama4040 Hello! I just found the start of my mix and it has been getting better, but you're definitely more adept than me if you already know how to mix and belt! With consistent practice, your range will increase and smoothen out the transition. Are bad habits like pulled chest still cropping up when you're singing around the higher ranges? Are you lowering your larynx at the upper ranges? Can you comfortably mix using all the vowels? Do you have good diaphragm support? Do you have a strong chest voice for a good foundation? These are all questions i had to ask myself to progress.
The main thing is to be fully focused and engaged during practice to rewire your brain when it comes to singing, and don't get discouraged when you hit a bit of a block! You know how to mix and belt, that's a very foundation! One thing i'll mention is that adding strong diaphragm support and bit of power (by using the mix and without straining of course) heavily helped in improving my mix, and through that the transitions have been getting smoother. I've still got a long way to go but i have definitely seen progress, you've definitely progressed and will continue to get better.
@@arnaudsebastienblaze8333 Sure, i'll give you the rough steps that i took, but keep in mind, i'm still developing my mix. I first honed in on getting a strong chest voice and repeated 5 notes from G2 - D3 and C3 - G3, all with different vowels, so aaa, ooo and eee, with decent volume. I also developed a falsetto early, for this i watched a video by Doug Zed titled how to improve falsetto. One thing that is immensely important is engaging your diaphragm to sing and the breath support. Singing along is very important for me personally, and although i couldn't hit the ranges of a lot of my favourite musicians, singers like Thom Yorke and Chris Martin were extremely difficult to emulate, so i settled with trying to emulate a baritone who sings in the lower ranges such as Damon Albarn. If you can't sing comfortably in the lower ranges, then you'll struggle immensely with your mix. Then i moved onto trying to develop my mix, for this i was relying on exercises from channels like Power to Sing who kept on repeating lowering the larynx through exercises like yawning, i also did exercises like doing an exaggerated "nay" or the "mum" with a cry tone with the larynx lowered from scales like G3 - D4, i tried the bubble lips but for some reason i couldn't sustain the bubble lips. When i had a breakthrough is from watching studio west's mixing videos, i did all the exercises in this video consistently and they've helped immensely in fighting the start of my mix. Exercises that particularly helped me in this video were the glottal pauses and the creaking which brings out the mix from the falsetto. It is extremely important to still practice singing with your favourite artists. If you feel embarrassed doing this in front of others or want to keep the noise down, sing into a pillow if you have to! To summarize, develop a strong chest voice with good diaphragm support, develop strong falsetto whilst maintaining diaphragm support, do exercises to prevent full chest, then do the mixing exercises in this video. That has been my personal path i've been on. Consistency is key, and don't get discouraged!
Always been a natural singer, so I never looked into how to be any better. I would just try and pull chest to hit the high notes. Thanks to your videos, I've found there are better ways to sing. Its not always easy for me to find that mixed voice path but your videos help! Thanks!

Noticing that flageolet on OO with a glottal onset really is darkening my chest voice, and making it stronger. Not only that, but the flageolet and falsetto have also gotten louder- especially falsetto. My friend couldn't believe that falsetto could get so big. Around G4, it starts to sound like mix.
@@StudioWestLessons That is freaking cool man! I never in a million years thought that we would be on the same page. It is really awesome that you are finally teaching this concept that we used to talk about in Salman's group chat. I have been trying to figure out the best way to approach it, and arrived at the glottal pause thing only this week. Huge improvements already. Not sure if we do flag the same way, but I like to do it with the larynx in a swallow position, tall open jaw with an AH in the throat and an OO at the lips. Then, when I go to sing, I just lower my larynx a little bit and it has this stretchy resistance to it that it didn't have before when I only ever practiced falsetto. It's weird how this indirect approach benefits the falsetto more than trying to hammer at the falsetto by itself. Where did you learn the falsetto mix?
Why do you suggest not opening the mouth when going up in pitch? Isn’t that sort of necessary for F1 resonance tuning? Don’t most other teachers suggest opening it as you ascend instead? What’s your rationale behind this?
Well, in closed timbre you don't tune F1 to a harmonic and instead you rely on tuning F2 to higher partials. However, in general I recommend opening the mouth for resonance tuning for louder singing. However, mixed voice is a coordination that can be developed by working with lower volumes and since opening the mouth a lot encourages more volume it's a good idea to try and keep it more closed. That's because raising the pitch with a loud volume encourages you to stay in the modal register. Once you're in control over your vocal folds and thus your registration it doesn't matter what you do with the mouth- you'll be able to mix with larger mouth openings and also be able to use louder volumes without prompting modal voice to take over. In many of the videos on my channels I try to present specific workflows for people to follow as a way to build some new skills- it doesn't mean that specific instruction is a universal rule to follow all of the time. -Gregory
@@StudioWestLessons I’m just seeing this, but thanks a lot for your reply. That was pretty helpful. I think I understand what you’re saying; however, I believe /i/ and /u/ have an F1 frequency of 320 Hz, no? In which case, if I didn’t open my mouth past E♭4, the F1 would fall below the F0, regardless of volume, wouldn’t it?
Man it's been forever since an upload but its always a banger. Yo Greg it's been forever so much has changed for you I'm happy for you. You deserve it. I know you're not accepting students at this time. I emailed you asking for advice. I highly value your thoughts on it. Could you please help me? For me it's a big deal. Because now I'm questioning my own singing. Hope to hear from you soon 😋. If not it's okay you've done enough for me.
Just watched the whole vid glad you're back :) so im not a good editor or anything but personally i didnt like the colour corrections on on the parts where it would say "Chest" "Blend" and "Falsetto" i get its to help people differentiate the 3 things but it was too much for me personally, i really liked the text pop up that said "Gregory West Vocal Coach" and the part when you told people to subscribe in the middle of you vid was cool hope this helps :)
Have you not heard the phenomenal voice of Dimash Kudaibergen yet? Believe me, it's wonderful and stunning, he is a master of smooth transitions between registers. Please react to his songs like SOS, Stranger or Ikanaide. He is a national treasure of Kazakhstan and has a huge fan base around the world, especially in China and Russia.
Thanks, man. I've been learning a lot from your videos. Do you have any videos on vowels? I have trouble with Oo and Ee. So when you did the exercise on Oo on a high note, I could do it in falsetto, but not in mixed voice with a good tone.
@@StudioWestLessons I think I understood them better now. I watched the video again and when you said the feel of the mix shouldn't feel much different than falsetto, that opened a door to new things, and I think I'm getting it now. Before everything past my bridge area I thought I had to drag at least some my chest voice up, and OOs and EEs on very high notes just weren't happening well. Thanks again!
I dont really can make the difference between head and mix when its not super high notes.. me and my friend always argue if i sing in mix or head, it gives me doubt that i cant really put my finger on it. Lets ask it like that, if i can sing all the range from chest to head without breaking (which i do) does it mean i must have mix voice in the middle?
Hey man thanks for this inspiring video! Is it normal that when I try to compress the sad falsetto vowel into mix with vocal fry the sound shifts a bit into the mouth? I feel like the falsetto is higher as position Thanks!

I just wanna say Thankyou bro
As an introvert the only thing which troubles me singing high is my Lack of Confidence 😅
Car ride 😋
That footage of your vocal chords was incredible. How did you do that? 🤔
@@StudioWestLessons wow, amazing. I don’t think I could handle that :/
@@StudioWestLessons wow- thats impressive, pirate ENT, i love it! and the video is great, i am inspired to really smooth out that break
I ❤️ this channel 🤗
The SECOND I'm rid of this Corona shit and my voice is OK again I'm doing thissss
Thank you for this! I think I love now lol
Awesome stuff
@@StudioWestLessons Thank you, Gregory. I'll keep working on them.
Bros making really convincing noises😂
1. Best singing channel.
2. BEST singing channel.
3. Algorithm. 👁
youy amazing bro greetings from Perú
I dont really can make the difference between head and mix when its not super high notes.. me and my friend always argue if i sing in mix or head, it gives me doubt that i cant really put my finger on it. Lets ask it like that, if i can sing all the range from chest to head without breaking (which i do) does it mean i must have mix voice in the middle?
i think you have a great and full voice, do your middle-high notes can sound powerful?
your vids are amazing
Hey man thanks for this inspiring video! Is it normal that when I try to compress the sad falsetto vowel into mix with vocal fry the sound shifts a bit into the mouth? I feel like the falsetto is higher as position
Thanks!
The higher I went I had to try not to allow flagellet to take over. It seems to give that part of the voice a release from tension.
Ty bro. More vids. Me here Philippines
Hey cool vid, Greg! I'll try this out tomorrow :)
18:30 lmao reminds me of the independence day movie. Thanks for the good videos!
