I met Dennis Quaid with his son in the 90’s. He was the nicest, most laid back, no Hollywood airs and was very personal. He mentioned he didn’t want to be recognized, but asked if I wanted an autograph. I handed him a sheet of drawing paper and a huge box of crayons. What color did Dennis choose? Red! I still have the autograph, framed and hanging on the wall. Dennis Quaid is cool as hell.
I talked to Dennis Quaid right after that incident and he said he hated the color red and that's the real reason why he used it.
I would have dubbed him: Laid back Quaid

Dennis Quaid starred in one of my all time favorite movies, Frequency. The father/son relationship between him and Jim Caviezel comes across as so real and genuine and it makes me cry, because I never had that with my father. Great actor

@@miguelrosado6348 Peterson was exceedingly good at his job. It was his views on free speech that got him into trouble. His defence of free speech ultimately cost him his job but propelled him into a whole new, and vastly more profitable and influential, venture.
You should ask when he became a celebrity instead of an academic.
As a casual movie fan, I discovered old movies and fell in love with the stories, actors, characters and witty interactions between them. There was no CGI. There were no endless sequels. The dialogue actually sounded like real conversation. It's a wonderful world to explore and way better than what's currently being made.
I'm old and have seen most of the old movies though I will rewatch them. I have now resorted to old foreign films.
Me too. I used to watch them with my grandmother growing up. I still watch them. I enjoy them...the music...the eloquence and it keeps me close to my grandmother who's been gone 21 years now.

It really used to be a craft. There were actors and line readers. Just like sales people and order takers. Today the system props up line readers with an image, and who think their opinion is absolute. Older movies are great.

Dennis Quaid grew up watching this guy in then 80s and 90s. He's has an amazing career and I think he looks incredible for being 70 years old. He's brought so many wonderful characters to life and his filmography is 2nd to none.
Great actor, always loved his films.

I am older than these guys and I cannot agree more about having everything in your life become a permanent record on the internet. This is why, as a Boomer, I can honestly say that we were the most fortunate generation in history. We were free range people. No one knew what we did, where we were, what we purchased etc. We were truly the last generation to ever know privacy. No person in the West who was born after the internet existed has ever known true privacy.
Sociologists and psychologists will be writing dissertation papers on this in years to come.
I’m a Gen xer born in 70, and I lived it too. Life was more local with the bigger world occasionally breaking through. Now people are controlled and conditioned. We are disintegrating as a people and it tears me apart.

I was a teenager in the 90's and I really miss the mystery of a celebrity. I miss only seeing them in movies and the odd interview. I miss not knowing what their interior design tastes were, what their dog looked like, how extravagant their vacations were....but most of all....I miss not having a clue what any celebrities political views were.

You see a lot of people saying this about celebrities and I get it. What's strange is the overwhelming majority of people who seem to feel strongly about this are the same people who support a lifelong public conman and reality TV game show host to be our godking.

Right, a true star is someone way above and highly exalted - not in a proud, arrogant way. But now, "reality" stars come down to earth to be with the masses and become "common" folk....and they lose their STAR appeal.
I still remember Dragonheart from 1996... What a beautiful and moving movie. Thanks Mr Quaid for your stellar career and all the good stories you helped gave to us.

However, if the "scandal" was that he supports Trump or Biden, or he's gay, or that he said something bad that he shouldn't have said (we all make mistakes)... We're cool. As long as you are a good person.

I totally agree. I think the mystique is part of what keeps you drawn to them, and once you know too much that magic is gone and sometimes even turns you off.
I try not to let that happen, for example with DeNiro.
Dennis, you were always one of my favorites. I'm 63, female, loved Breaking Away (the short lived tv series was filmed right outside my dorm in Athens, GA and I'll never forget how they glued leaves on the trees to make it look like fall). But in the 90s, my household (two girls) was glued to your version of Parent Trap and I thought you were just dreamy. Must've watched that movie 50 times. You're looking good! And I love that you're not too into Facebook, I feel the same way. All the best, great interview!

Oh, I wish I could invite you to my family gatherings. I’m one of the fortunate ones to have had a family you would enjoy. Tomorrow, on July 4 th, we will have 25 of us ( it’s often more. There are 32 in my immediate family. I’m the mother of 8.). I will help my husband grill, eat watermelon and homemade ice cream, swim in hot Mississippi, go to our local fireworks show on the lake, have endless conversations w grandchildren and children, and go to bed exhausted. If you lived near me, I’d invite you bc we always have extra people that need a place to go for a holiday. I am quite blessed, and I know it. Not everyone has what I have. Must give credit where credit is due: God( I built my life around scriptural principles as laid out in the Bible , and I have a kind husband.)
80s to 2000s were definitely a golden age. You could almost count on there being a good movie (plot/story/acting) every weekend.
Get adventurous and check out the film noir movies from the 30's and 40's. Humphrey Bogart, Alan Ladd, Veronica Lake. Nothing like a black and white film to capture all of your senses. Your imagination is held within the expertise of the camera man and the director, moving every action through light and shadow.
It truly is Hollywood supreme.
I actually totally agree. I'm always intrigued to time travel with film, see how similar we are to people who have come and gone. Its such a cool way to connect those experiences. 👍
I still remember my first cinema experience. Sam Raimi's Spiderman 1 was released. It was magic from the eyes of a five year old me.

I just watched "Enemy Mine" the other day for the first time in probably 15 years or so, and I had forgotten just how emotional a movie that one is. It's probably my favorite Dennis movie.
That is such a great movie one of my favorites for sure. It is emotional, especially the part where the alien has the baby and then passes away

Loved that insight on how knowing more about an actor's life can ruin your connection with a character. It helped me understand why some modern movies make me feel nothing
A friend of mine didn't know Niel Patrick Harris played for another team. He immediately stopped watching how I met your mother because he couldn't wrap his head around the character being a skirt chaser and it not being genuine. I don't know if this is what you meant but I wanted to feel special and contribute
@@beetlejuice3x309 For whatever reason, I knew NPH was gay from way back. I remember telling a friend...hey, Doogie Howser's gay! I didn't care, I just thought it was a funny sentence to say at that moment. Anyway, it impressed me that he could pull off Barney Stinson so perfectly. He's still one of my favorite characters from any TV show I've ever watched regularly.
I loved Innerspace as a kid. This magical moments are completely missing today. No one makes movies like this anymore.

Yes ChrisNoeth. Movies were fun. Now fun isn't important as Hollywood is all about other feelings or narratives such as Depth, Cynicism and projecting a social or political affiliation. Hollywood ate itself and wonders why theatre attendances are low.
Hollywood has lost their imagination. They rely heavily on computer graphics, making sequels, and poor directors. Your lucky if you can find a good story. Some of the acting isn't too good either. Movies are expensive to go to. The movie, a drink and popcorn is $30 for one person. People don't have the money, nor are people buying into the woke agenda message that is being pushed onto them. That is what the problem is.
Don't blame actors but blame the people that are pulling the strings.
As for movies being woke, I hate to break this to you but movies have Always been woke.
They car more about force feeding people their crazy pc ideology and they're doing it by propagandizing movies and TV and what's worse is they've been using already established works like lotr, star wars, 007, scoobydoo, harry potter and more to further push their agenda and in the process they've ruined and disgraced the original work and it's creators.
Plus when they do tell a story they often gets facts wrong. Bio pics are the worst kind of film. Time lines are incorrect. They did a decent job with Lincoln, but screwed up the Freddie Mercury and Elvis films.
I blame the people producing the movies. They’re the ones green lighting these awful scripts with “the message” in them.
Actors can only do so much. Some of them get hosed. If you heard about Adam Drivers story to getting casted in Star Wars it’s ridiculous. They didn’t even let him read the script…. With that being said, he did his best.
And even CGI isn't that great anymore. It's too obvious. There is no mistery. No magic.

Dennis Quad is a superb actor. I remember him from my childhood in the 80's in the movie 'Inner Space'.
I've recently watched him in a couple of brilliantly Christian/faith based movies, both true stories.
And I'm all for him being open about his faith in Jesus when in Hollywood that is frowned upon!
Innerspace was way ahead of it's time. That was my favorite Martin Short movie also. Haven't seen in in 15+ years but I'm downloading it now. Thanks for the reminder!

One of the few times you see Peterson relaxed and enjoying a conversation...they seem to have a lot in common to chat about.
Quaid seems really easy to talk to and seems to bring Peterson out of himself, very good.
The last two movies I saw in theater was Midway, starring Dennis Quaid, and Sound of freedom. Both very much worth the watch.

Last I've seen: A star wars movie (Brought back to theater for May 4Th), Labyrinth (Brought back to the theater), Sound of freedom, Nefarious ( amazing movie), another star wars (brought back), and John Wick 4. In June on of my sons and I are going to see the Lord of the Rings movies, in theater. As you can see, we're enjoying the old movies, on the big screen.😁
Sound of freedom was a lot better than what I was expecting.

My first time going to a Theater was to see the movie "The Rookie" starring Dennis Quaid. Ever since then I've always enjoyed and appreciated his performances. This was a very nice interview 👍🏼
I just rewatched a movie from 1990 that I remembered watching when I was 6-years old. It’s called Shipwrecked and its Norwegian. It’s about a young boy that voluntarely travels to sea in the 1850s to save his parents farm that his sea-injured father cant keep up paying the debt, the ship gets wrecked in a storm between Sydney and Calcutta, he fights off british pirates by making traps on his deserted island, finds treasure, earns the respect from his shipmates and comes home rich with a beautiful girl and buys up his parents farm just before it goes to the lender. I think Jordan would love that movie.
[4:38] "It brings them down to earth, and that's no good if you're a star." This is such a clever statement to have in the middle of the dialogue. You can see that Jordan is proud of it, and rightfully so.
It’s worse than that. They reveal their political stance and we really don’t want to know. In most cases it’s just disappointing.
That comment stood out for me as well. Really really meaningful
If you watch a lot of Peterson content you can tell it’s just another day in the office for him.
Quaid didn't really buy into that description, he prefered the more modest point of view.
I don't think he or Dennis is right. At least not about movie stars being in interviews and speaking their mind on politics.
You can go back to any era and find the biggest stars doing these things.
Marlon Brando was thought of as mysterious compared to his peers and even he did interviews and made big political statements all the time.
Yes. I had an anthropology professor say, once, that the ability to forget is necessary for progress and development. The last part of the discussion in this clip brought those words back like I heard them yesterday. That was over 20 years ago and, man, is that true more than ever. They are so right about the value of being able to forget and leave the past in the past and the tragedy of social media preventing such necessity for a healthy culture/individual.

Anyone who has been there when their child was born, are totally surprised when 12-24 months later the woman who went through the ordeal, starts talking about having another one. To me that is the greatest example of being able to forget I've ever seen.
Dennis Quaid is a favorite actor of mine because he always nails the roles he takes and he seems very authentic and likable IRL.
Also, I really respect his lifelong commitment to fitness. The guy is 70, can pass for 55, and has been in solid shape his whole career.

Dennis Quad had some legendary films. He’s an every-man actor, like Harrison Ford. Excellent screen presence and relatable.

As a cyclist who grew up in the 70s and 80s, when Dennis mentioned Breaking Away, even before the poster flashed on the screen, I got a tingle up my spine. That movie had such an impact on me and for me represented the magic of Hollywood that is probably lost forever. "Refund?! Refund?! Are you crazy?!!!! Refund?!" Hahahahaha... What a wonderful time to grow up.
As a cycling nerd from the late 70s, into the 80s (where I really picked up the bug), when he mentioned Breaking Away, my ears shot up, too! Hope you get some s'miles in over the 3 day weekend, too!

What about Terms of Endearment, Children of a Lesser God, Kramer Vs Kramer, Ordinary People? Ordinary People was not just a "yuppie drama", it was relatable to so many people. It was a movie that made you feel, people dealing with grief and loss. You don't see that in studio movies today. Movies today don't make me cry, they make me bored or disgusted....

I grew up in the 80's...yesterday while driving with my 17yr old an AC/DC song came on....my son swears we had the best bands....I confessed I didn't know how the vocalist looked like, nor did I know how the lead singer from Chicago, Kansas, Led Zeppelin or The Eagles looked like.....but I can absolutely tell him which band came on the radio every single time....!! No Shazam required....pure wholesome memory of an amazing era...Rock on all the way from Southern Texas!

My family was a huge movie family. We loved going to the movies once a month, after the pandemic we stopped going. I feel there were many reasons why…
1. Lack of quality movies, moves are very predictable
2. Agendas being pushed
3. Price
4. The environment changed, people are rude and don't know move etiquette

I can respect Dennis Quaid as an actor. As a person in this interview, he seems like a nice guy, a reasonable person, so I can respect him that way. I really enjoyed his performances in The Right Stuff as Gordon Cooper, and in Enemy Mine as Willis Davage. If this was an ad for the movie Reagan, it works well. It convinced me to see it when it comes out.

I think he's on to something; it was the mystery surrounding movie stars that made them appealing. Once we knew too much about them we started to dislike them.
I remember fellow Canadian Norm Macdonald mentioning how seeing DeNiro in an interview brought down his admiration of him all the way down to "this guy's a fool!"
Never thought I'd see Dennis Quaid talking to Jordan Peterson. I love Dennis in all his movies! I used to have such a crush on him when he was younger. Funny thing, my OBGYN has a picture of him and a few other now aging actors on the ceiling. 😂

My favorite Quaid movie: Enemy Mine! It touched me deeply as a kid and I still love it today.

Oh my gosh, Dennis hit it right on point. Movie stars were like mystique individuals you rarely saw them. And when you did see them, maybe walking around Hollywood or by mistake at a supermarket or what not you are really in awe of those individuals. They were glamorous. They were royalty in a way. I also will include Dennis Quaid as one of those stars. Nowadays, everybody wants to be seen always at all times social media also had a big factor in killing Hollywood. I am in my mid 50s and I truly miss the old Hollywood.

A drunk Republican is better than a sober Democrat. If Dennis has had a few nips...so what. He is relatively coherent and well worth listening to. What bothers me in Hollywood is Climate hypocrisy and virtue signaling. Keeping it real counts for more today than ever.
I really like Dennis Quaid. Growing up, he was the guy. I love every movie he's been in. He comes across as very authentic, very relatable. I have his gospel album. He doesn’t have the best voice, but you can truly hear his honesty in his vocals. Knowing his backstory, his struggles mingled in with his triumphs, add to my enjoyment of his music. That he's turned his back on all this Hollyweird nonsense, that he no longer feels a need to prove himself to anyone but God increased my respect for him. I'll have to watch the full video.

Love Dennis Quaid! Enjoyed the movies you've mentioned. He especially was phenomenal as Doc Holliday in the movie 'Wyatt Earp' (with Kevin Costner) ... Amazing how he and Val Kilmer (movie 'Tombstone') played the role of Doc Holliday differently, yet both equally deserved an Oscar for their individual portrayals. Just my opinion, of course.
Dreamscape is a good one . With Christopher Plummer , Max Van Sydow , and , David Patrick Kelly .It was my favorite movie as a kid.

It has been 4 years since my last time in the theaters. Make the numbers and you will understand when all began. I totally get what Peterson says. I dont think I will ever go back to the theaters to watch a movie. Nowadays I just rewatch movies from the 80's and 90's and I can tell you I never get bored of them

Movies used to be a major part of my life. Several times a week I'd watch at home, DVD or Blu-ray. I'd go to the theater. Now I rarely turn on the TV. And I never go out to the theater. The only movies I see are at my daughter's house, whatever she has on for my grandkids.
I grew up eagerly watching the Oscars because of how much I loved movies. Now I don't give a damn and haven't watched in most of a decade. My wife and I actively look forward to when they cease to exist as a broadcast show and reverts back to a little party for Hollywood insiders that no one cares about... just as they started.
Movies,actors and actresses were so much better back in the older days, then compared to today. Only thing better today is the special effects, but not the acting or the writing.

Back in the day, actors and actresses had contracts with studios. They would have to make X amount of movies in Y amount of years. The best actors and actresses got the best contracts, which also stipulated public behavior. The actors couldn't reflect negatively on the studio. Today, everyone is independent and can say and do what they want. Eventually, you find out that your favorites are all nutcases, hateful, or completely unlikable. It was better for the public to have the studio contract buffer, imo. There are very few actors or actresses I like today, and it's because of who they are irl.
I think Florence Pugh is a throwback to an earlier time of real quality.

I used to always watch the Oscars, and we always waited for the best picture because I would always have seen at least five out of the six of them. Now, I don’t even know the names of these movies that they’re nominated. The movies just aren’t what they used to be. It’s really sad.
Or when some movie wins Best Picture not for best picture reasons...but for the organization to make a political statement.

It's just sad. I miss the old days. There's just nothing good to watch anymore. I love older movies because they are slower placed and don't rely on all the special effects and jumpy cuts.

Breaking Away is still my favorite movie of all time. Saw it in the theater when I was 7 years old. Great memory.

As a cyclist I loved this movie as it was the first one I remember about cycling being made into a film. I don’t think I’d rewatch it now as it’s probably really dated and a bit cringy. So I’ll stick to the memory of it being a great film in the day.

I find myself suffering from acute "entertainment fatigue"... I don't even have the energy or desire to watch supposedly "good" movies.
It's tiring because the media is a machine designed to make us stupid with propaganda from our enemies.

One of the coolest memories was going to the Drive In to see a double feature of Rocky 1 and Clash of the Titans when they were new. Summer time with snacks and family listening through that tiny speaker hanging on the window of our station wagon. -Priceless.
That last part about a lack of ability to forget is two points that hadn't been connected for me yet. Thats an excellent point.
I remember when the first time you would know a movie was coming out was when it was advertised before another movie in the cinema. People actually got more excited for the previews than the movie.

Big fan of Dennis! He remains a “movie star”. I’m 52 now and remember attending the movies at least a couple times per month from my late teens until mid thirties, it was always a big fun night out with my friends. Would often see new movies on opening weekend. What changed? I got older, had kids, less and less films appealed to me and my changing demographic and it got so expensive to go see a movie. Last movies I saw in theatre was Elvis and Oppenheimer last Summer. Took my teen daughter to Elvis a few weeks after it opened, cost me about $80 by the time it was said and done with admission, snacks and drinks in theatre. Asked my teenage son if he wanted to come, he said he’d already watched it… on the internet somehow so didn’t want to come.
Went to Oppenheimer by myself a week later, snuck my water bottle and M&Ms in with me that time… lol!
I see the occasional preview on RUclips now for films that interest me but I just wait for it to come to Netflix or Prime etc. and I watch it at home.
Dr. Peterson, I would love for you to analyze the phenomenon of crowd participation at Rocky horror picture show movies over the decades.
I first went to one of these shows in the late 1970s and was utterly shocked at the audience participation and costumes

As @TheCriticalDrinker says, movies use to be driven by stars. We'd say, "Are you going to the new [insert star name] movie?" Now, we simply say we are going to see this or that movie. Most of the time, it needs to be really special to even get us there.
True I used to see all of the Kevin Bacon movies.
I've found myself looking forward to directors work more than actors as I've gotten older. I'll go out of my way to find out what the latest/next Scorsese, Eastwood, Mann, etc movie is, and very often they have some great actors in them, but I'm definitely not there for the actors any more.
The appeal and the glamour that Hollywood once brought to the world is dying if it isn’t already dead. Also, we’re learning more and more about how sick and nefarious that industry actually is.
People looked up to these people before they realized that they are even more fucked up then them. There is nothing left to idolize when you see people like Johnny Depp playing some role when you know he is some heavy alcoholic.
It had to die because it was truly an illusion and it’s time to wake up.

Remember when real movie stars would never step out in public unless they were dressed well? Now most of them dress in sloppy sweat pants and over sized Tshirts. They just seem like overly entitled rich brats. The glamour is gone. It was better when we didn’t know everything about their private lives.
Aaaah... Dragonheart is still a favorite of mine! I love showing RUclips clips to my 5 year old son, especially the scene where Denis is stuck in the Dragon's mouth with his sword. My son loves it.

Social media killed the movie star. My hope as a screenwriter is that this means we get better stories in the long-term because a celebrity is no guarantee for a hit anymore. But interesting and well done stories still grip audiences. Btw, my own writing is influenced by Peterson a lot, and I just recently watched Flight of the Phoenix :) great movie
I honestly think it might backfire. One of the reasons why we got more original movies thirty years ago was because they had movie stars attached to them. Producers took risks because of them. Now, everything is franchise based.
Many like myself are tired of all the rehashed stories and remakes. Hollywood is lacking creativity. Not just in the writing but directing and editing.
The new fallout series was a huge disappointment for me because the acting lacked passion or excitement and the editing was so sudden and it had no flow from scene to scene. Sure they had a star packed cast but it was wasted.
It was just so lackluster and almost dull at times
@@brokenwrench404Agreed. My son convinced me to check out Fallout because he knows I am a fan of Walton Goggins. I managed to make it through two episodes in one sitting, but have not had the desire to return to it. What I have been rewatching (or watching for the first time) are ‘40s-era film noir. Not every one I’ve watched has been great, but when one realizes the sheer volume of movies the studios were putting out on relatively low budgets it is amazing the quality of acting and cinematography they produced.

Quality face to face communication is a dying art.
When I was a kid there were still many actors who had put their acting careers on hold to serve in the military. Times have changed.
If you go back to WWII, actors like Jimmy Stewart put their careers on hold, to fly combat missions -- you can see he didn't make a movie, from 1941-1946.
Of course, a lot of things got put on hold, in that time.
@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 Those actors were all part of my childhood. It was long after they served, but they were still active and respected. The important thing was they respected America. I'm not sure sure about the current lot. There are some exceptions, however.
