Such a helpful video! I make false horse tails using natural horse hair and fabric. I was experiencing a birdnest thinking it was my bobbin. Your explanation was spot on. On my way to fix the issue with my upper tension! (a few minutes later) OMG! It worked like a charm! I cannot tell you how much I apreciate your video!!!! A thousand thanks! Lucy
Thank you so much for doing these videos... I have had my Janome HD9. for several weeks...all was well until I broke a needle and after replacing could not keep the thread from breaking. After two hours of frustration and the operator's manual read from cover to cover I found your video. Turns out my bobbin screw was just very slightly too loose. After following your settings, it sews a beautiful stitch again! You were a life saver. I have a deadline to finish a quilt top! Thanks so much.
Thank you - Ive been using my new HD9 for a couple of weeks and for the first time realised my bobbin wasnt clicking in as I was holding the latch open, and Ive now been able to set the tension correctly! Please keep making little videos like this on every aspect of the HD9 which is a great machine and now my tension is perfect, I can say I am extremely pleased with it.
I believe you've just saved my HD9. It's been 2years I got it and work every day with it, and got tension problem for few month now. I sent it to check up but came back with no change. The last minutes on your video were my solution🙏 Thank you so much !!!!!
You absolutely saved my sanity today. Have been struggling with my machine to no avail. I tried what you just showed and now all is well. Thank you so so much you're a life savor.
You Janome Junkies are the best! Bringing home my new HD-9 and unboxing it was a little overwhelming 😅. Research pays! I found you guys on RUclips and you saved me a massive meltdown! Thank you!❤
Thank you so much for clearly explaining how tension works! I have finally solved my problem for J-HD9-Pro problem. I really cannot thank you enough for your clear instructions on how to solve tensional problems! A huge shout-out and Kudos to your great demo! Wonderful!
Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou. Was having so many dramas with huge loops on the underside of my fabric. Removed the spring as you suggested and voila, perfect stitching.
I just purchased a new janome HD 9 BE I use it primarily for leather work. I'm having a terrible time getting the detention set, I don't see where you have addressed this previously. Perhaps you could address this in the future. Also is there any benefit in purchasing a walking foot for this machine?
Hi great video, my issue is I’m using tex 40 but I can not get my tension right at all. My top stitch is sort of at an angle and not great underneath … any ideas please as to what I might be doing wrong. Thank you
I just finished two bags using Tex 45 with zero issues and beautiful stitches. I changed my needle and wound a new bobbin and started another bag, and now I’m getting skipped stitched. I rethreaded the machine and changed the needle again and still getting skipped stitches. I’m at a loss as to what changed. I’ve had zero issues up to now. Could the newly wound bobbin cause an issue? I have a V1 and hate the half bobbin case. Unless I hold the lever, the bobbin falls out and it’s never clicked upon insertion like yours did.
Nice job. I will send a tension screwdriver for you. Good idea. Advise customers to have two Bobbin cases. One for 100 percent polyester,,and one for thick thread,,,and mark the thick thread case with nail polish.
I have seen videos where a liquid is applied to faux leather/vinyl by brush prior to the HD9 sewing with its regular foot - I am guessing it is to stop the foot sticking but what is the liquid?
Thanks for the video. I am not clear about the dial tension. You turn it very quickly and I can’t tell how you get from 4 to 8 with so many turns. It looks to me that you would just have to turn it very slightly. How do you tell what number you are on?
Enjoy your videos, very helpful and easy to follow. Question when using a Heavy thread like Tex 45 do you still need to run same thread in Bobbin or is better to go with a light wt thread?
What can I do to help with loose bottom stitches when using the 1/8” janome foot? I get loose stitches and nesting as soon as I switch to it. When I change back to the foot that came with the machine it’s fine

Hi I got janome HD 1000, it's brand new, never been used. Kept in a storage, no gunk no rust, but it's jamed, not able to move even millimeter. Hand wheel is stuck, jammed.
Having trouble understanding the “numbers” on the top tension. Demonstrator turns knob multiple times and I don’t see how that corresponds w/ a number.
Hi David apparently No one is able to explain what correct tention looks like. Thank you I was able to correct two machines. I like the dinosaur back explantion.
What would you like to know :)? We recommend having it flush with the screw... You can tighten it down to have shorter thread ends when you use the auto cutter.
Using a Towa Gauge, can you tell us how many millinewtons (mN) or grams you are using in the Bobbin to get that balanced stitch? Also, what weight or Tex is the thread is in the Bobbin and the Top? And lastly, can you do this test on just 2 layers of cotton with 40-50 wt poly thread or Tex 30 thread?
Tension is not universal to all HD9s this varies from machine to machine. Knowing how to set the tension is important and in this video it should help explain how to do so :)
Clearest explanation for how tension works “in the field” that I’ve come across, and totally helped me fix my issues. Thank you!

i have had extreme bunching on my lower thread. This video has been extremely helpful. I feel like i know my machine so much better now.

We will!
I love the dinosaur hump reference!
Thank you so much for such great video! Crystal clear!
This has to be the clearest video I have seen re tension on the HD9. Any chance of a video about changing the foot pressure too please?
Just turn the top knob. Above the pressure bat. Down. More pressure. Up less pressure. Easy.
Thank you, you saved my life.
Thank you for this video. Perfectly explained.
You're very welcome!
Thank you for this tutorial, it helped a lot.
This video is my stitch bible.

You should run it in both. But you can run something lighter, you'll just have to play with the tension.
What do you need to do when the fabric is puckering
Thank you thank you!

When i do the giggle test on the bobbin tension, the bobbin falls out whether it is tight or loose…is that normal?
Having trouble understanding the “numbers” on the top tension. Demonstrator turns knob multiple times and I don’t see how that corresponds w/ a number.
A Memory craft 6600 can you help on this Model?
Yes how do you set the tension on a Janome for polyester? My manual is in French only.
What about the pre-tensioner?

Can you show the proper tension when using vinyl as if you were making a strap which would be 4 thicknesses of vinyl
Tension is not universal to all HD9s this varies from machine to machine. Knowing how to set the tension is important and in this video it should help explain how to do so :)
What could be the cause of a random loop in the bobbin thread? It looks fine everywhere, but then there’s just one little random loop? 🤔
Possibly a bad needle :)
What is the tool called you are using to adjust the bobbin please?
T-screw. A small flat head screw driver works just fine though.
