The alloy ones make the steering much more positive and hold up to some heavy bashing

    OMG!!!
Why are taking half the truck apart to do this?
The Slash has a "Modular Assembly" which include three main sub-assemblies.
If you look at the black and white parts manual that came with it, you'll see that diagram just slightly passed the middle of the manual.
It's just this simple to get to where you have full access to this area. (i.e. ~ 3:40 mark)
    - Remove FOUR main screws from the top of the chassis.
    - Loosen TWO screws that go into the chassis that hold down the front stabilizer bar to the chassis.
    - Remove ONE screw from the steering linkage, the bar attached to the steering horn.
    - Unsnap the complete front assembly from the main chassis.
Literally, in less than a minute....
Surprised you didn't take the rear shocks off as well?! 😉😛
