When I heard The Point Of No Return for the first time in 2010, I was a fan after 4 seconds. I can't believe that a perfect, mature concept album like Aquarius is a friggin DEBUT album. Even more incredible that you managed to not only hold that level of quality, but to effortlessly surpass it with the following masterpieces. You guys are awesome.
The 1st listen was similar for me, after downloading a torrent of 'Prog' and having a listen to Aquarius and thinking this is like Dream Theater levels of musicianship but British sounding, I had to buy the album and find out if there were more, thankfully Visions had just dropped so I got that one too, It's truly great when you discover a new band with a good catalogue of good music to get into, like when I first got into Rush.
Ever been so grateful that i got this cd for my birthday from one of my friends. My local record store owner actually tipped the guy to get me this cd: "If he doesn't like it, he can always pick something else. But this might be the next big thing" he said. Was astounded by the sound when i found out it was a debut album. Sure it had some flaws here and there in the mix, but the musicianship was uncanny.
Best debut album of all time IMO. Insanely well written for a debut. Sounds like they have so much chemistry on the record. Still absolutely hooked on Aquarius. Thanks Haken.
+ 1 ! Reminds me of Beyond The Bridge first (and only :'( ) album. Go check this one if you like prog metal and dont know it yet :) hope you'll like it (i absolutely love it ^^)
I am 43 years old, I only heard Aquarius and not even the whole album and I am here all excited and very suspicious I have found one of my top 5 favourite band ever. Surely first for prog metal together with Dream theater of course. These guys are supernatural.
@@VelaniTheOne Yea, It's not the hottest take in the world but I wouldn't describe it as a "very cold take" either. If you ask most Haken fans what their best album is they would probably say The Mountain or Visions.
That's actually a really good description of their early work. I'm a fan of all of their stuff but I definitely feel that Early Haken (Aquarius, Visions) > Later Haken (The Mountain, Affinity, Vector)
@@nightowlgoob5416 I think Affinity is their best album personally. But I love how their style has so completely changed multiple times. Shows you how versatile and creative they are.
I kind of have to disagree, and only because after their first era of concept albums, the whole band began composing the music instead of just Henshall, and I think that's why the magic went away. Look at The Cocoon vs Vector. The Cocoon is a unique and musically interesting piece while Vector is just a lot of riff chugging. I don't think their later stuff is bad, including Affinity, but their direction changed because they all decided to compose the music, not because they were being creative. I respect your opinion though 👍
@@nightowlgoob5416 Honestly I think it's for the better that Henshall stopped being the sole composer. I love the guy's music, but if you analyze it from a music theory perspective, he really does a lot of the same stuff over and over. That's one of my biggest problems with Aquarius and Visions: They are both super repetitive and use the same chords and musical ideas so much that you get a little bored of them. Like, oh, look at that, yet ANOTHER chorus that keeps switching between the vi chord and the VI-b chord. -_- Gets boring after a while lol. Still both fantastic albums though (especially Aquarius).
Damn I've been listening to that medley from time to time for months and all of a sudden I google the song to see if a live video exist and THIS APPEARS :D I'm full of joy :D
@@HammerBlow500 Late reply but I was actually there and if I recall correctly, they played the Architect too and Ross did the grunts there as well. Could also have been another show since I've seen them three times now, but anyway, Ross did grunt part there too.
Here I was hoping Haken was covering the 90's pop band Aqua and their bad ass hits like "Barbie Girl" and etc, but ah well Aquarius was pretty good too
I'm glad that Haken are trying new things all the time. But, I would love it if they would make another album like Aquarius. I feel like they just put more effort into this album than any other.
I wish Haken would return to this style :/ Their last album is really not my thing, and their new single either :( I liked the epic concept albums stuff like this :'(
Very little I'd assume, since constant touring is the only way they can maintain this project. I'd urge you to check their Cockroach Fund, which is designed to help them essentially survive and recoup at least part of the absolutely tragical loss that was the cancellation of their entire tour due to the virus.
yes, i think he can sing quite well.. but there is some autotune too (in other instances, even from this same session, might be more obvious, see "HAKEN - In Memoriam (OFFICIAL VIDEO - Live in Amsterdam)" on this same channel, particularly in the ending of that track).. the industry is infected with this shitty practice, i blame the technology, but more than that, the people (post producers) misusing it.
No, contrary to what all these people are saying, he's not autotuned. There's an argument to be made that he's had pitch corrected here and there - clearly not everywhere, though, because you can clearly hear him hitting slightly flat notes now and then (like 19:32 for instance). I'm personally of the opinion that there was no pitch correction for this recording though. I've been to three live Haken concerts, and he really is this good live. He just doesn't hit wrong notes very often; he does occasionally in one song or two, but he often goes through entire songs without hitting a bad note. He's a very good singer, and don't forget that Haken has an audio setup that makes it really easy for him to sing on pitch - they have no amps on stage at all, and all their sound comes already mixed through offstage speakers facing the audience. This, combined with his earbud setup that gives him a feed of his own voice, makes it easy for him to hear himself and sing on pitch, despite the loud instruments around him. You hear people sing this accurately live on crappy shows like American Idol and X Factor, so I see zero reason to believe that Ross can't do it here.

Streams and Aquarium are two of my favorite Haken songs.
Thank you InsideOut to put public The Aquamedley in this Quarantine Time

Pretty unpopular opinion but I think they never toped Aquarius in their discography. This is such a one shot masterpiece it's beyond words .
it may be unpopular, but not wrong IMO. Objectively it's cohesive yet very daring in it's content, almost equalled by The Mountain & Restoration.
All their albums are at the same level imo. The most consistent band currently
I personally find Visions better than Aquarius but that's just my take
This is a very cold take
