    • @PeterMorris
      @PeterMorris 8 лет назад +10

It's very difficult for people, as they get older, to change their ways. As such, bands get "stuck" in a rut. You can see this in people's taste in music who are older (like me) who, after their early formative years, don't seem to change much (not like me). There are always exceptions to the rule but get past 30-40 years old and people will still be listening to the same stuff they were 20 years ago. I believe it is the same for making music. I'm constantly on the lookout for more interesting music (with a heavy bent). Rush used to be my fave band. Dream Theater took over. Now it's Opeth. Haken sounds really good and may end up being my favourite band but then, strangely, I like the sound of Sunn O))). Go figure. :-)

    • @TheHansbt72
      @TheHansbt72 8 лет назад +11

Must say I'm inclined to agree on all points. Opeth's been my fav band for years some years now, with Watershed as their best album so far. Must admit that Haken have some potential though. som parts are really cool. Only just "found them" and i'm a little delighted to find a new band that have this potential :)

I just found this the other night. My mind has officially been blown. I've listened to this song like 20 times, and it's even more mesmerizing each time. Then I listened to Atlus Stone. These guys are the pure essence of what progressive is. Pure complexity.
Easily in my top 5 favorite bands, now.

  • @Rovelius39X7
    @Rovelius39X7 11 лет назад +52

This album has to be my favorite progressive rock/metal album ever, tied even with DT's Scenes From a Memory in my book. So musically diverse. Beautiful, yet epic. Makes great use of a lot of music theory that gets neglected in modern music, from the use of harmonic minors, to the use of cadences that only resolve rhythmically. The Mountain is a corner-stone in progressive music, and I deem it a staple album to any prog fans out there.

    All my kingdom's gone
    It's burned to the ground
    Reason leaves me
As future sits upon a solitary throne
    A treasure is sinking
    Seems now long gone
    The desert takes away
Our fears and dreams but they
    Always will return
    [Chorus]
    Be the moon and sun
Be the wind and cross the storm
See the stars begin to swarm
Read the writings in the stone
Be the moon and be the sun

In the skies a secret lies
    Well disguised before my eyes
"The Universe is all around us kept in motion
Alleviate our pain and fear test our devotion"
    Breathe in the pain
    "Keep breathing"
    You won't break these chains
    "Keep digging"
    For what you've foreseen
    "Believing"

Man, this song is incredible. Reading the lyrics I suppose the song talks about seeing though things or see things in a different way... the metaphor of Pareidolia (seeing faces in objects when they arent really there) fits perfect! Diego writes and sings niceley! This band its outstanding, every album have different things to enjoy and love... I hope Restoration and Affinity are good too, I suppose it! Love you, Haken!

  • @sard0nicpan

My main playlists before Haken consisted of Yes, Flower Kings, ELP, King Crimson, Dream Theater, Symphony X, Arena, Kamelot, Mastodon, Pain of Salvation, Opeth, Rush, The Mars Volta, Spock's Beard, Ayreon et al... no particular order there!
I hear influences here and there, but overall this band is a total original. While eclectic, it avoids being derivative.
To me this is the extension of musical ideas I first heard in the 70's. While on the guitar side I can hear the DT influence, overall the composition has more in common with the Yes Years of Close to the Edge and Relayer, in addition to the Crimson years with Wetton and Bruford.
Melodically complex with the quirkiness originally introduced by King Crimson and later demonstrated by Spock's Beard and The Mars Volta. These gents are influenced by the best of Prog and Prog-Metal while presenting an extremely original sound.
Overall, very exciting to hear some fresh prog ideas!

I stopped listening to music for a long time.
The last band I remembered touching me was Dream Theater... Nothing after that.
I didn't know it at the time, but I just couldn't find anything I could identify with. I didn't have those words yet.
I was almost completely music free for at least 10 years.
I would "hear" music, but would rarely play it for myself, but honestly I couldn't really listen...
Funnily enough, some musicals were powerful enough to "get to me" but that was it.
Then Haken came into my life.
I listen to them daily, and have done so for months.
    I get it now.
I remember what music meant to me.
    How I did use it.
    What it gave me.
    Music is prayer.
The music you love, the text that follows you
The rhymes or lines that really GET YOU GOOD
The wisdom you have gained from it, the hardships it helped you overcome
All those are held in the memory of their songs...
To be met again, like an old friend from the past...
I think... yes, trying to describe how I feel about music, I practically spelled out "Crytallised"...

There's a big problem in the Post-1992 Prog Scene:

    • @musicisthebestF

So Dream Theater is their Non Plus Ultra Prog Metal Band

Just because people have not heard anything else but DT does not make them the main influence for someone else.
Imho Haken is more prog then metal (this song is somewhat of the most metal they go on The Mountain. DT is more metal and technical show off then prog and emotion.
Even King Crimson and Gentle Giant have had their hard rock moments.

Nisse Hult I think the point was, simply, that Dream Theatre is viewed as the only point of reference for prog-metal fans born post-1983. For me, the first nearly progressive band I heard was Tool. I compared virtually everything I heard to them for years. Fortunately for me, I expanded my horizons and listened to something other than Tool. I started to listen to the bands members of Tool cited as influences, listen to similar bands as they, etc. That sort of intelligent musical appreciation is something I recommend to the dudes saying Haken is a foreigners' impression of DT.

The Mountain - best prog release of 2013, perhaps sharing that title with The Raven That Refused to Sing. We've been spoiled this year, progheads. If you don't already own this, do yourself a favor and spin it from beginning to end - it's brilliant (and this track I might even consider one of the weaker ones, minus the instrumental section).

You people are comparing this with DT?
This is something that DT will not even think of Writing.
Just a few time signatures, key changes and strangeness doesn't make it comparable with Theater.
Dream Theater is about soul, those who listen to them, know it.
    Hail, DT.
