- I want to tell you about an really original sounding album from 2024 by Mdou Moctar. "Funeral For Justice" has the electric guitar sound of a giant rock record, with a West African backbone filled with lyrics specifically about the struggles of Nigerian people.
One of the best live acts out there....If they are in your area, go see them....Prepare to sweat and dance your ass off...also your mind WILL be blown!!
One of the few concerts I would actually buy a ticket for at this point.
Never heard of him, but your review sounds really cool. I’m convinced to check this out. Thanks for the tip.
Great! Hope you enjoy it.
After watching your video yesterday I went over to Bandcamp and took a listen. Very interesting and creative for sure! Thanks for sharing this with us Robert.
He just announced, he is releasing an acoustic version in feb
I'm a fan of West African guitar but would never have found this. Title track is great. Will check out this album...thanks, Robert!
Hope it lives up to my review.
Seen him live 4x now. Easily THE BEST guitarist going the past 10yrs. Absolutely stunning style!! That said, His drummer is freaking amazing! He carries the band live 🔥🔥🔥
I've seen him live zero times. I might have to break my concert-going sabbatical if they come to St Louis.
@@RobertFithen next time he is in Chicago
Love hard rock, not heard that album, will have to check that out, great video again.
Thanks for the review, sounds intriguing!
They are touring US / Canada soon, get your tix now they are selling fast. I am seeing on all 4 Canadian dates. I've seen them half a dozen times and especially when they play in 500 to 1500 theatres and halls it's incredible! A definite elevator ride to the weirdest dimensions. A+ vibrations!
Hey Robert, thanks for featuring this. Never heard of him/them but watched a couple videos from this LP and just ordered it. Every once in a while I have to step out of the 60's / 70's too.
Hope you enjoy it.
Seen live a while ago. Incredible band!!
I haven't seen them yet.
Great review. I love this record. Afrique victime is amazing as well. I saw mdou play live in Amsterdam. It was one of the best shows ever. The drumming was out of this world and mdous guitar solos freaking amazing. I definitely recommend going to a show on his current us tour. This guy is so tallented. When he first started playing he had to build his own guitar from a tree trunk and some bicycle brake cables
I read about that. Incredible.
Phenomenal record
Saw them in STL a couple years ago at the Pageant
That would have been a great place to see them. I hope to catch them before they start playing arenas
Brilliant live !
Hey Robert. Great video! I've heard some others talk about this album, and listening to your take. I need to get this! Sounds right up my alley. I dropped a new video yesterday myself involving 70s rock. Cheers
So wasn't expecting you to say it's on Matador. Looks like I got to check this one out. Thanks.
Hell yeah man. Great review. You’ll definitely love Afrique Victime too. The way you compared it to Santana was a cool way to explain the vibe. Dig the idea of these more focused album spotlights. However, I like the way you do those longer themed videos too. Keep on keepin’ on. Thanks for your content. ✌🏻🎸
Thanks! I'm going to do more single album videos
Glad you enjoyed it! I have all but one of his albums, and you can pre-order an acoustic version of this release. One of the five shows I’ve seen included an acoustic set, and that was fantastic, I wish he’d play more acoustic sets when he tours. You’ll like Afrique Victim, and Ilana the Creator too.
I definitely plan on getting "Afrique Victim".
Cool! I heard this band on my local station 90.1 The Wombat and dig it. Kinda reminds me of Khurangbins guitarist. Also has that African vibe.
cool. that album art work is lovely too
I’ve wanted to check them out. Seen the albums around. Thanks for the recommendation
Sounds like an awesome experience !
I've known about Mdou Moctar for a few years now, I don't listen to it often but it's a nice change of pace, a real palate cleanser.
RF showing an album from 2024? I'm in the Twilight Zone! Anyway, I received my complimentary copy of this, along with other 2024 albums that will probably never be seen in a lot of these other out-of-touch old geezer channels. But I'm glad you did, though! Credit where credit's due.
I had to check and, sure enough, the last five videos you uploaded were about music from 1983, 1982, 1999, 1981, and 1980. Yet, I'm the "out-of-touch old geezer". Your most recent videos that show your face in the thumbnail displays records from 1988 and 1982. People age, it's a fact. I'd rather be old than a hypocrite.
I just saw that he's playing at Stubb's in Austin on the 31st. You got me curious!
If you love this. Check out Altin Gün too. Turkish/Dutch band that is absolutely awesome.
Thanks Robert, that is an interesting album (listening to it right now)
Sometimes it's good to just bask into the sound and not worry about the meaning of the lyrics... (of course, it's good to know what it's about in general at least to avoid surprises)
In a similar way, I cannot recommend enough Mooner - Tabiat from Indonesia. They're on potify, YT Music (so YT as well) and Bandcamp. Worth a listen. I have the clear vinyal and it's sounds pretty good.
Thanks!
My favorite artist i cant understand is Tinariwen. Both rhe albums i like begin with E. I think Emaar and Elwan. A chill drum circle acoustic guitar and chanting vibes.😂
Can you plz review Atlanta rhythm section underdog album and also blood sweat and tears 1st release?
You may have bagged them a sale here Mr Fithen :)
(Incidentally, isn't the Moctar chant from Galaxy Quest?)
Robert Fithen, is there rhythmic drumming in that Nigerian album? I once heard some North African / Nigerian drumming in a Music Appreciation class.
It's in interesting time signatures, but much of doesn't sound like traditional West African drumming. It's mainly performed with a rock drum kit. Still excellent though.
