I don't recall the early 90's as being a particularly Puritanical time. Even in the era of AIDS, people used to have a lot more actual sex. Erotica was definitely edgy, but other artists were doing similar stuff... what made it such a big deal was that it was Madonna. I think this video only got played on the MTV once really late at night and then they never played it again if I'm correct. The music was so fresh on this song, no one else had a sound like this and the album is amazing. Big hugs!

I was 14 when the Erotica album and the SEX book came out and I got the double disc vinyl as a birthday gift. Although I was surprised by the scenes when I first watched the video on TV, it didn't shocked me. I guess because I am from Brazil and here we have Carnaval, so seeing people almost naked on TV in not a big deal. But it caused a lot of controversy among many people as well as debates about women sexuality. I know that in the USA the video was not aired on regular rotation on MTV, but here it was possible to watch it even in the afternoon. With the SEX book I was not able to put my hands on one until the early 2000s when I finally got a copy on eBay. But I knew most of the pictures back in the day because there was this magazine that did a special edition about the album with the lyrics of the songs, posters and loads of pictures from the book. Uncensored pictures, by the way and I was able to buy it without any trouble although I was underage at that time.
By 1992 porn was much more mainstream than you'd think. Playboy had it's own TV channel. There were countless shows on TV revolving around sex, many containing nudity and explicit sex. There was a multi billion dollar sex industry, but it was Male controlled and male centred. The outrage was not so much "sex being shown" but that a woman was controlling her own sexuality, and earning from it. People forget this fact.
