  • I decided to leave the Porsche workshop I was in, whilst there was a lot to like about it, I was craving more. I do not regret the move. Stay tuned for videos from the new shop.

    Biggest problem in the spraypainting industry is not giving the apprentice plenty of booth time because the boss doesn't want to spend extra on materials or head painter feeling inferior and feeling insecure about his job if he teaches someone younger and has the potential.

      Apprentice here. Super thankful my painter gives me hella practice. He definitely makes me prove I can do something a few times before moving on but he's not afraid to let me try new things.

    You hit the nail on the head with the comment about other painters and even panel beaters feeling threatened by someone else starting in a shop...Im 41 now and have been in the trade since I was 16, I've worked in a lot of shops over the years and now run my own...it's the one thing in the trade that never goes away.
    I learned a long time ago that my standards and my name was all that mattered in the long term, and not some idiots feelings getting hurt because he thought someone 'new' was going to take away his world championship spray painters belt from him !!! It's ridiculous

    in the same position right now, took a job at a Porsche shop tired of all the endless polishing, getting micro managed to the point where they second guess what size shirt I wear, just got an opportunity to leave and I'm taking it. Thank you for making this video it really makes me feel better about my decision. Keep up the good work mate.

    Ive had one of those jobs where I was micromanaged, every time you turn around you got dude saying “sure you should use a red pad there?” “Sure you shouldn’t sand that up to 5000 before you polish it?” Never ending, and on everything you do, dude even questioned if I should eat a big greasy cheeseburger for lunch lmao

    I’m a quiet background follower and don’t speak up often on stuff like this. Everyone has their thing. Most people do the work they do because they love it. For me it’s rowing racing shells…. 2k paint, i learned a lot from you just by watching. If you don’t enjoy what your doing then at the end of the day what is the point ! It can be the little things within the job that we love, not the primary task, but if that’s what gives you the happy feeling when you go home at the end of the day, or makes you want to get up in the morning, then that’s worth it ! Personally I see you as an inspiration, and grey educator for those that haven’t come through the traditional pathways. Keep it up, and do what makes you love the job you chose ! Ps spray suits are top quality ! Love them

    just painted a 69 chevelle, did it in le mans blue and two stripes in a pearl white. took me by myself a month to get it nice and flat, one morning to base/clear it, let it sit two weeks in the sun to let it cure, broke it open with 600 grit, let it sit for two more weeks, 800, 1500,2000 , polished out like glass. 3 weeks later no chop, no shrink back. most time ive ever spent on a paint job.

    Hey Gunny, I'm really pleased that you are back doing what you do best and what you like best. Anyone that knows you can tell that you were more than capable of working at the Porsche shop you have all the skills to do everything that is asked of you but at the end of the day you have to be happy at what you are doing so I hope you have found that where you are now, all the best Gunny.
    I have recently upgraded my clear and base guns, after winning the new DV1S smart repair gun and seeing how much better it is than the SRI I had to get the DV1 clear and DV1 base and have to say they are fantastic guns, another reason for getting them was your reviews of them especially the DV1 base and I was shocked that it was so much better than my GTI Pro TE10, the DV1 lays base effortlessly and the DV1 clear is a joy to get that flat glassy finish, I may be nearly £1k out of pocket but have a huge smile each time I use them 😁👍 John UK

    High end shops work better when they have a painter and a different person that wet sands and buffs. it is too much to do both and still have good production! micro management is always a bummer. good choice to leave, do what makes you happy

    • @P5ykoOHD
      @P5ykoOHD 3 года назад

      Depends mainly on the person ... but yes, division of labor is good.
      If you employ a painter, and make him spend more time polishing, it's kinda unfair on him if he came to your shop to mainly paint.
      The occasional polish is fine and fun.
      I'm getting micromanaged atm at work by a superior who's chasing a new position (the worst), and I'm hardly doing what I love anymore, not to mention, as soon as he tells me to do something else, my day is ruined and I end up having to run to get stuff done because he messed up my entire organisation and flow. Considering the fact I get more work done than any of my other colleagues, despite taking extra pauses, and working slower, I'm still much faster because I never need to redo shit I've already done.
      It's driving me crazy. And I also seriously contemplate leaving.

    I had a giggle as you were explaining your resons. As I have done the same thing many years ago. I started my apprenticeship in 1972 back in ths acrylic days in a large Sydney smash repair shop. I excelled in my job winning a state award in my last year of apprenticeship. I painted a lot of race and drag cars some for show. I too got bored with all the finishing processes. Thru the 80s I mainly repaired and painted trucks then moving on to large mining and farm machinery, also all types of airplanes, mainly crop dusters. I have worked for myself since the late 70s , I have retired now just sold my last panelshop, I am doing up some old cars at my leisure so I understood your reasoning. All the very best to you.
